The Los Angeles school district will pay millions of dollars to settle dozens of legal actions stemming from an abuse case in which a former teacher is charged with lewd acts on children in his classroom over five years, district officials said Tuesday.
General Counsel David Holmquist said the settlement will cover 58 of the 191 claims and lawsuits filed against the district after the January 2012 arrest of former third-grade teacher Mark Berndt on 23 charges of lewd behavior at Miramonte Elementary School.

Yeah, well, you're not going to read a lot more on the link:
"It also shined a light on how slowly state officials act to censure teachers and led to a flurry of allegations of teacher-student sex abuse in the district and in other school systems."
'Slowly' like weeks? Years?
Worthless.

Makes you think that the California public schools are run by the Pope or something, eh?
Teacher's unions feed 58 children semen - $27.2mil.
Teacher's destroy the futures of millions of children - priceless.
And I'm going dollars to doughnuts that the union fought the penalties on that teacher tooth and nail.
When I was a yoot, I had some good teachers. Some *really good* teachers. And many more pathetic teachers. There's no way you can flatten the bell curve with all the samples at the top, but you ought to be able to fire the ones below the 10% mark.
The bell curve is already flattened towards the bottom in college. Ed majors are the academic pond scum of college students.
