From Peter Weber in The Week, here's a lede after my own heart:
Rand Paul has managed to pull a Willie Nelson. In songwriter Bruce Robison's playfully deifying telling, Nelson moved to Austin from Nashville in the 1970s and, "like a miracle," gave "all the rednecks and hippies from New York City down to Mississippi" something to cheer about, side by side. The list of senators who stepped onto the Senate floor to help the Kentucky Republican keep up his nearly 13-hour, old-timey talking filibuster about President Obama's drone policy didn't include senators from New York or Mississippi, but it did encompass Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) among a supporting cast of Tea Party and establishment Republicans. The groups of people cheering him on outside the Senate defied the idea of an America polarized along strict partisan lines.
When Reason selected 35 heroes of freedom back in 2003, both Willie and Rand's father Ron made the cut. (Full disclosure: So did Dennis Rodman. Discuss.)

I think Rodman can still be a hero of freedom. He's a good example of being free to say whatever dumbass thing crosses you mind without the government forcing you to stop.
Because they have a long-established system that is uniform across the country that everyone knows, and people don't like change. The only reason the other English Measure countries changed is that it was forced on them by the government, and even still they use remnants of English Measure. Every Canadian knows miles, every British person can give you their weight in stone.
All the Brits I've known use imperial units. I think the Canadians adopted the metric system with such alacrity simply to prove that they were superior to hidebound America.
The Brits still pretty much use Imperial measures. Even though they are forced to label things in metric, a lot of items still come in 454 gram packages.
I still remember arguing with my high school physics teacher who said that you'd stand on the inner surface of a rotating space station because the acceleration vector points towards the center.
But this wasn't about free falls. In a rotating space station your inertia would be wanting to not be accelerated towards the center, IOW you would feel a centripetal force in the opposite direction of the acceleration vector, away from the center of the rotating hub. My physics teacher argued the opposite.
Look, reading is totally overrated. As long as you understand how to only use gender neutral words, and vote Team Blue, then I think we can all agree that is what is really important.
You do understand that that's the ones who are going to CUNY, right? Which means they are going to the city's approximation of a community college and couldn't get in to a real college?
Id have gone with Yesterdays Wine as the bottom Willie link.
And I'd have written the whole story about how I wished Roger Miller was alive and how poorly he's represented on YouTube. I'm pretty sure there's a corporatist conspiracy there. Then back to Ron Paul.
Peter Weber must be the other guy besides me who bought that Bruce Robison album.

Dennis Rodman is still drinking isn't he?
But what about Kenny Rogers?!?
What about him?
Nope. Johnny Paycheck.
Wife just had Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader on. The contestant was a teacher. The question was how many centimeters in 3.5 meters.
She had to take a cheat.
Why can't Johnny read?

Do they even teach the metric system in US schools?
Yes, about as well as they teach languages. It's mostly forgotten forever, unless the student has to relearn it for college.
Of course. All physics and chemistry classes that I ever had were completely done in the metric system.
I never understood the US's aversion to the metric system.
Because it was co-opted by the French and the French can go fuck themselves.
Same goes for Celsius, even if it was invented by a Swede.

This isn't complicated.
And Brits prefer to drink in imperial ounces, not milliliters.

And I imagine things have only gotten worse.
Fucking freefall, how does it work?

A physics teacher who has never seen 2001: A Space Odyssey? That's. . . I can't even . ..
No, I brought that up, and he said they were walking on the inside surface.
This was in the early 80s so it's not like I could just Google a pic or go rent the movie.
Im not sure what you were counterarguing exactly.
Im not sure what you were counterarguing exactly.
He was saying you would walk on the inner floor of a 2001 type space station feet towards the center.
Actually, you would feel a centrifugal force which counterbalances the force due to the centripetal acceleration.
*sticks fingers in ears*
La la la la la
I can't hear you
La la la la la...

I always suspected the centripetal/centrifugal thing was an invention by bored pedantic high school physics teachers.
Nope, its very, very real.
Did you notice the alt text on the cartoons?
Groanz!
Of course.
It is hands down my favorite xkcd.
Even better than:

Nothing beats this one.

You are both right, depending on what frame of reference you are talking about.

That is so 18 minutes ago.
All you had do is to spin him on a playground merry-go-round (do they still have these anymore?) really fast.

80% NYC high school grads, cannot read

I think they should change the Y to a T. Makes it more interesting. Hey mom, I got into CUNT!
"Well I hope you used protection. I couldn't bear the thought of you re-producing."
Aren't centimeters those guys with short swords that fought in the Roman army?
That was over 100 years ago and they spoke a different language and stuff.
No dummy, they're that insect they made up for that video game.

Math and reading are different subjects. Although she probably sucks at reading too.
I knew there'd be somebody...
"The Hippie and the Redneck Can Be Friends."
Sometimes they're even the same person. Whoever thinks this is news has probably never lived in the great middle part of the country.
Read the article!
Now Jesse, you know it's not proper H&R protocol to tell folks to read your own article, yes?
It's up to we commentariat to politely tell people to 'read the article, you dumb fucking cunt!'.
Am I banned?
Depends on who you're calling a cunt... you cunt.
Hey, where did Hypernion go? I could have sworn I saw his post here a minute ago?
Anyways, kill 'em all, grind them into bits until God cannot even sort out his own.
