Rand Paul is Not Alone: 57 Percent Think Obama's Assassination Program is Unconstitutional, 59 Percent Are Concerned Govt May Abuse Drone Power

Early Thursday morning, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) concluded his nearly thirteen hour-long filibuster holding up the confirmation vote of new CIA Director John Brennan. Paul used the filibuster to encourage the Obama administration to answer questions about the government's drone program used to target American citizens suspected of being terrorists.
Rand Paul is not alone in his concern about the government's drone program and the assassination of Americans without due process. According to a recent Reason-Rupe poll, 57 percent of Americans say it is unconstitutional for the president of the United States to order the killing of American citizens who are suspected of being terrorists. Thirty-one percent believe it is constitutional. (Mike Riggs writes about these results here.)
Fifty-nine percent of Americans are also concerned the government may abuse its power when it comes to its use of drones to kill American citizens who are terror suspects.
Strong majorities of Republicans (65 percent) and Independents (64) agree it is unconstitutional for the president to order the killing of American citizens who are suspected of being terrorists. In stark contrast, only 44 percent of Democrats agree, while 40 percent believe it is constitutional. This may explain why only one Senate Democrat, Sen. Ron Wyden, joined Republican Senators Flake, Cruz, Rubio, Thune, Lee, Toomey, Johnson, Barrasso, and Scott on the Senate floor Wednesday.
Nevertheless, majorities of all political groups are concerned the government may abuse its power using drones. Sixty-five percent of Republicans are concerned, compared to 53 percent of Democrats and 58 percent of Independents.
Young Americans are also far more likely to say it is unconstitutional for the president to order the killing of American citizens without due process. Eighty-two percent of 18-24 years olds and 62 percent of 25-34 year olds says it's unconstitutional. However, only about half of those over age thirty-five agree that its unconstitutional while about 35 percent say it is constitutional.
Nationwide telephone poll conducted February 21-25 2013 interviewed 1002 adults on both mobile (502) and landline (500) phones, with a margin of error +/- 3.8%. Columns may not add up to 100% due to rounding. Full poll results found here. Full methodology can be found here.

According to the Maddow Blog, Rand Paul is a sincere defender of civil liberties, but Rand Paul is still a crazy conspiracy kook and all the Republicans who stood up with him are opportunists.
Fuck her. That's like all the comments yesterday like "I can't believe I agree with such a dirty, racist teabagger. OMG I need a shower..."
To these people, things like and abortion and gay marriage are all that matters. Who cares if the next president, a potential anti-gay religious nutjob (their words, not mine) has the power to hellfire a gay couple kissing near the Empire State Building in broad daylight for the hell of it?
These types of people would have not given a shit about HItler as long as he didn't hate on non-whites, gays, and retarded people.
Rachel Maddow spells evil if you squint. She wouldn't know a civil liberty from kiwi fruit the stupid bitch.
These types of people would have not given a shit about HItler as long as he didn't hate on non-whites, gays, and retarded people.
Many of these types of people in the 1930's celebrated Hitler until the existence of the death camps became common knowledge. And then they just pulled the old switch-a-roo and redifined facism as a "right wing" ideology.
Until then they loved his economic policies and were practically in awe of his "leadership" of Nazi Germany. Secretly they wished FDR could be half the dictator that Adolf was. The same could be said for Mussollini.
Maybe you agree with Sen. Rand Paul's (R-Ky.) civil liberties arguments; maybe you don't. Perhaps you see him as an ideal messenger for his message; perhaps you notice that he's a strange conspiracy theorist who talks a little too often about Hitler and believes civil liberties end when a woman wants control of her own reproductive freedoms.
I'm too used to Reason's writers. I kept looking to click "too often about Hitler" since surely she would provide a link to evidence of such an assertion.
Talk too often about Hitler? Why do leftists hate learning from history. Why are they so eager to plunge blindly Forward!, not thinking about the mistakes of the past.
I'm actually surprised and pleased to see how many of the comments are actually reasonable. For instance:
"If it was W saying we can attack people in the US with no oversight we would all be bouncing off the walls ."
Followed by "I'm a pretty liberal person and I'm kind of 'bouncing off the walls'."
Maddow is a jackboot-licking moron, but it appears that some of her readers are beginning to buck the trend.
So what happens today?
I fell asleep early last night and missed the real party.
Does Brennan just get confirmed today? Or do they need to vote on cloture now?
They need to vote on cloture, and it sounded like mayyyyybe Mitch McConnell was going to throw some roadblocks in the way of confirmation.
I feel like both of these should be closer to 80-90%
that would require an informed electorate and one that understood where one's rights come from.
When the history is written about the Rise and Fall of the United States do you think the socialist media will get an honorable mention?
Nah, the government(s) of the majority world will blame the fall of America on whatever particular political philosophy underlies their most powerful opponents.
Watch as democracy descends into tyranny.
Watch as democracy descends into tyranny.
Tyranny of the masses.
But others will say...but but but we're in a DEMOCRACY. As if Democracies are tyranny free. They act is if the two things are incompatible and one can not exist with the other. The Founders knew and said different, but they are just dead white guys that had no good ideas.
The most important thing about the Founders is that they were racists. And they probably hated gay people. That means everything else they said should be thrown out the window. - Probable thought of Rachel Maddow...
and while the public view is recorded, Wyden was the only Dem to stand with Paul, and Cruz/Lee the only Repubs. If that's not a bipartisan "fuck you, that's why", what is.
More Rs got in for some grandstanding later in the evening.
Sometimes dude you jsut have to roll with it man.

Youve got to admit dude that is pretty slick.

Only 57%?
NO FUCKIN' SHIT!!!! ONLY 57% THINK THAT MAYBE, JUST FUCKIN' MAYBE, SOMEBODY MIGHT GET DRONED BECAUSE THEY ARE IN THE WAY OF WHAT THE WHITEHOUSE WANTS TO ACCOMPLISH. WE...ARE...SO...SCREWED!!!
So where are all the liberals who opposed Bush's evisceration of our civil liberties? Is Obama immune to criticism just because he as a D after his name?
Yes.
as Great and Powerful Messiah, the Chosen One is granted power to kill anyone across the globe with the push of a button. What god doesn't have that sort of power?
Besides, he's a benevolent god, one who doesn't make mistakes. Everybody who's been killed through his action or inaction has deserved it.
"These strikes are legal, they are ethical, and they are wise." - Press Secretary High Priest of Journalistic Outreach Jay Carney
Well....DUH!
That 53 percent of democrats are probably just worried that someday a Republican might get into office and do the exact same shit as Obama. Shit that they've at best made excuses for, and in some cases cheared. Hypocritical ass stains, all of them.
How does one "Chear"?
What amazes me is that there are 47% who believe it's perfectly fine for the POTUS to use drones to kill American citizens on American soil at his whim and desire.
47%, you say? I seem to have heard that figure somewhere before.
So, we decide constitutionality of actions by polls and consensus nowadays?.....
Jeez....
