Shikha Dalmia on Republicans Becoming Big Labor's Willing Dupes on Immigration in Washington Examiner

President Obama is preparing to propose immigration reform. But before restrictionist Republicans get their knickers in a knot over whatever weak gruel the president offers, they should bear in mind that the status quo they are defending is wholly and solely the creation of Big Labor and is totally antithetical to their free market beliefs, notes Reason Foundation Senior Analyst Shikha Dalmia in her morning column in the Washington Examiner. She writes:

In a free market, employer needs, not federal bureaucrats, would determine which and how many immigrants enter the country. Uncle Sam's role would be restricted to conducting security and health checks.

That is not how our system works now.

In a free market, society wouldn't be picking up the tab for the cost of immigrants that exceed their benefit. If the employers want to pay the full cost of these employees, not just their salaries, then have at it. If employers want to impose some of their true labor costs on society, not so much.

Absolutely. But that doesn't mean the latter shouldn't be relatively restrictive until the former is under control/eradicated.

Once immigrants sink or swim on their own, or rely on private help, throw open the gates for healthy, non-criminals.
