I said something like this the day after the election, and it's come out pretty much as I expected.

According to the Wall Street Journal:

"Obama called for a $1.6 trillion tax increase, a $50 billion stimulus program and new powers to raise the federal debt limit, demands that Republicans viewed as a step back in talks."

If that's Obama's offer, then I say we just go over the cliff.

From this libertarian's perspective, if going over the cliff means more taxes and some spending cuts, but Obama's plan to avoid the cliff means more taxes and no spending cuts whatsoever, then going over the cliff is NOT the worst case scenario. Obama's plan is.

So, we might want to stop portraying going over the cliff as the worst case scenario. If going over the cliff is better than what Obama is proposing, then I say we go over the cliff.

I concur. I wish they would offer deduction eliminations in place of tax rate hikes. If we have to raise revenue, we might as simplify the tax code and eliminate some of its market distortions. I doubt this will happen. Either way, a deal would need spending cuts of at least 1.2T$ over ten years to be better than just cliff diving.
