Vid: Ron Paul Poem About Buying Marijuana with Gold Coins!
In 2008, the Republican Party held its national convention in St. Paul, Minnesota. Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) was there, bringing the house down at his "Rally for the Republic." And Reason's Matt Welch was there, too, surveying the skies for signs of optimism and engaging in what the Beats called "spontaneous bop prosody" and what you would likely call something else altogether.
As the Ron Paul Festival wraps up today in Tampa before the delayed Republican National Convention, take a listen to the greatest poem about Ron Paul that you will hear all day.
This originally aired on September 4, 2008. Here's the original text:
Over the skies of St. Paul, Minnesota/
There flew the banner of freedom/
High above where freedom was being destroyed/
By a Republican Party that cares more about/
Fascism/
Than it does about the rights of individual citizens/
To buy their marijuana with gold coins

Libertarian chicks love poetry.
All 7 of them.
Lots of women love gold and pot....
I love poetry. I'm a libertarian chick. So therefore, I agree.
Me too.
But also Matt reciting poetry is gold. Solid gold.
By the way, can we have Rage's "Renegades of Funk" at the closing of the Ron Paul rally? The lyric "renegades are the people, with their own philosophies, that change the course of history, for everyday people like you and me" seems appropriate enough.

Please no.
Added Benefit: Tom Morello seeking a cease and desist order for his precious "property."
^ This.
Every Rage Against the Machine song ever.
Their first album IMO was something special. Everything since then has been a disappointment.
"My hope is that maybe Paul Ryan is a mole. Maybe Rage did plant some sensible ideas in this extreme fringe right wing nut job. Maybe if elected, he'll pardon Leonard Peltier. Maybe he'll throw U.S. military support behind the Zapatistas. Maybe he'll fill Guantanamo Bay with the corporate criminals that are funding his campaign ? and then torture them with Rage music 24/7. That's one possibility. But I'm not betting on it." - Tom Morello
In short, it's not the fact that America is killing/torturing people, it's that we're killing/torturing the wrong sorts of people.
i've always loved rage. just gotta accept that their politics are ridiculous, but that says fuck all about the music.
as a guitarist myself, i think morello has great tone, and a great approach to his instrument, and rage is yet another great example of (to paraphrase) "three chords, a guitar and the truth". although in their case, it's not "the truth", but it's sincerity. what they believe may be complete rubbish, but their devotion to it, and their craft = great music.
"killing in the name of" is brilliant.
back in the day, drop D tuning was pretty rare in rock, and morello, and bands like rage have made (imo) a revolutionary change in sound by alternative tunings, something probably ultimately as influential as the initial adoption of 1-4-5 progression into rock and roll way back in the day.
drop "d" is COMMON now. that's pretty amazing.
if all anybody remembers from RATM 30 yrs from now is "killing in the name", that will still be an amazing legacy.
oh btw, in reference to the comment about torturing people with rage music (morello's above statement), it needs to be understood in context
killing in the name has ALREADY been used thusly in the war on terror. morello isn't introducing the idea.
from wikipedia" As part of the US War on Terror the song was used by military interrogators at the Guant?namo Bay detention camp. Music was played at painfully high volume levels for hours on end, as a form of psychological torture. "The fact that music I helped create was used in crimes against humanity sickens me," noted Morello
i think, taken in that context, morello's comment makes more sense...
For once, you "context" is correct.
I first heard drop C tuning on the Pumpkins' Machina record (Yes, I listened to Machina.) Anybody else think it's an incredibly ugly tuning?
Yes. Give me open G any day.
I actually think every song on that album is good (my fav is Bullet in the Head) with the notable exception of "Settle for Nothing". It's like a giant turd in a punch bowl full of awesome.
*snaps fingers while puffing clove cigarette*
*hacks uncontrollably from awful clove cigarette - light Marlboro*
I don't know what it means, but the kids seem to love it.
Did you import them or is it one of the clove "cigars" they introduced after the ban. The new ones suck but I always bring home some packs of the normal kind when I travel.
DO NOT WANT.

While the person in that certainly resembles me (although I never ride in the back), I am hesitant to liken Welch to a braying mule just yet.
Dude, photoshop some glasses over that mule face. I dare you.
That is a very interesting video. A perspective that I have not thought about. I am bullish on buying gold bullion and encourage all my friends and relative to invest in gold. My favorite site is http://www.CherishedGold.com for great prices especially for the small investor. check it out for yourself. Thanks for the post.
Holy Shit it looks like Issac is going to maybe hit New Orleans. If it does and makes Obama look bad, it will be further proof that God has a wicked sense of humor. New Orleans is nearly as fucked up now as it was in 05 and the levees are no better.
I guess we'll find out if Obama cares about black people.
I miss 2005.

"YO BARRY, IMA LETCHA FINISH, BUT BUSH WUZ THE WERST PRESUDENT OF ALL TIME!"
The contrast in spins is going to be hysterical. New Orleans will flood and kill thousands and it will be no big deal. Page 20 story.
New Orleans is nearly as fucked up now as it was in 05 and the levees are no better.
Except we have a president who cares. Don't underestimate the care factor.
Funny that we can't accurately predict the course of a hurricane but we can supposedly model temperatures over decades.
Just because I can give multiple orgasms to the furniture just by sitting on it, doesn't mean that I'm not sick of this damn war: the blood, the noise, the endless poetry.
click on the image above to take a listen to the greatest poem about Ron Paul that you will hear all day.
Certainly the greatest poem about Ron Paul I've heard on Reason.com within the last hour.
In Tribute to Matt Welch's best poem on the site, I give you, The Most Beautiful Girl in the Room.
"tallest midget"
you could be a part time model
But you'd probably have to still keep your normal job.
always funny
It doesn't scan. 🙂
The hurricane is going to miss Tampa? That can't be right.
Just yesterday, I was informed there would be "poetic justice" for those evul rethuglitards, and they would all be drowned, or washed way, or be forcibly baptized with sea water, or suffer some unimagineably horrific fate for their sinful exclusionism and intemperate racism.
It is poetry so are we suppose to snap our fingers instead of clap? And there is still eleven hours left in the day, take two hours out for walking the dog and eating, and add in that I don't watch a lot of TV and you are probably right I wont hear another poem today. But that was enough. Stupid fascist planes!
I mean, what's the weather for, if not to punish your enemies?
That's not a poem. It doesn't even rhyme. And where is the guy from Nantucket?
where is the guy from Nantucket?
He's busy licking the bucket.
Needs some bongos, trumpet, and a string bass. And maybe a turtleneck sweater with a black beret.
Buying hash with silver bullion from an Afghan.
Got to give cred for the only serious anti-war candidate of 2008.
