Concern over the suspension of a Twitter account belonging to Guy Adams, a foreign correspondent for the Independent, took a surprise turn earlier today when Christopher McCloskey, the US broadcaster's vice president of communications, told The Daily Telegraph Twitter had initiated the ban and not NBC.

"Our social media dept was actually alerted to it by Twitter and then we filled out the form and submitted it," he wrote.

Mr Adams was suspended from the micro-blogging site on Sunday after posting a series of critical tweets about NBC's Olympics coverage, culminating in the publication of a corporate email address belonging to Gary Zenkel, president of NBC Olympics.
