Mitt Romney: The Newest Batman Villain?
As conservative chatterer Rush Limbaugh was perceptive enough to discover yesterday, Bane—the name of the super-strong monster in Christopher Nolan's upcoming superhero flick, The Dark Knight Rises—sounds suspiciously similar to Bain Capital, a financial services firm co-founded by Mitt Romney in 1984.
As Limbaugh pointed out:
"Do you think that it is accidental, that the name of the really vicious, fire-breathing, four-eyed, whatever-it-is villain in this movie is named Bane?"
When writers first created the character of Bane in January 1993, they wanted a name that would inspire terror. Plus, they obviously knew that 19 years later, Romney would run for the American presidency. So they had to set in motion a sequence of events whereby a movie adaptation of their comic would emerge in 2005, with the series culminating in the summer before the 2012 election.
The decision to name the villain Bane was and is a transparent effort to discredit and villanize Romney in the eyes of the American people by linking him with the likes of a brutal, hulking leviathan luchadore. This may very well be the most brilliant PR move of the last century, fated to determine the outcome of the most important election of our lifetimes.
Or not.
More on Romney's bane at Bain here.

Back on the painkillers, Limbaugh?
Caught some Limbaugh today. It was actually a good segment: after the Romney presser featuring actual entrepeneurs complaining about the "you didn't build that" moment, the questions were mostly about Romney's tax returns. No questions for the real people.
Now, the Bane/Bain thing is just stupid. So he swings both ways. This is more of a dog-licks-balls story than anything else.
wouldn't the more apt Batman/Romney narrative be in the film's protagonist, a wealthy venture capitalist?
Regardless, cheap and easy publicity for the film makers and the folks hawking memorabilia.
lol... Romney is Bruce Wayne! and I how I wish for a 'AIX42-licks-own-balls' story.
I'm a deviant, not a narcissist, I swear!
I took Limbaugh's entire spiel on the Batman villain was a joke on his part.
I would sure as shit hope so. If Romney worked at Syn-Ester Consulting, it's not exactly D.C. comics' fault that Sinestro sounds similar.
Most of what he says is. Since liberals are generally humorless retards, they take everything he says literally. It is funny how liberals think of themselves as being so smart. Yet most of what their arch villain says goes right over their heads.
I took Limbaugh's entire spiel on the Batman villain was a joke on his part.
(Replace 'took' with 'thought' or 'was' with 'as'. Whichever you prefer.)
I eagerly await John's defense of this theory.
Speaking of humorless retards...
Every time Rush says something indefensible even by his cretinous listeners, you play the humor card.
The thing about humor is that it has to be funny.
To find something funny, you have to get the joke. So that pretty much rules you out.
Oh yes I forgot about all those conservative stand-up comics and comedy writers.
I know they're out there, somewhere, probably huddled in a room stewing over the fact that it's not PC for them to make that hilarious joke about black people's hair.
Most comedians are not funny Tony.
99% of liberal "comedians" are just smug pricks with the intellect of a smartass 17 year old. See Bill Maher or Andy Borowitz for proof of that.
Most liberal comedians spend much of their show making fun of conservatives in front of a liberal crowd and get a lot of laughs for it. Should anyone be surprised? Even if they made those jokes in front of conservatives, conservatives have enough humor to laugh at themselves. Try making fun of liberals in front of liberals and see how many laughs you get... probably won't make it out of the building alive.
Try making fun of liberals in front of liberals and see how many laughs you get... probably won't make it out of the building alive.
Depends. A lot of liberals have the physique of a Gumby doll, so if you can fight even a little you're OK. Either that or just make sure you're armed. Most of them also piss their pants at the mere sight of a gun.
no tony..we understand; it's only PC to make fun of conservatives and/or white folks, especially Southerners.
On the other hand, the Blue Collar guys are pretty much conservative and they seem to do okay without ever talking about black people. Biggest difference between them and white liberals is the former make fun of themselves while the latter get hard-ons pointing at others. Black comics almost always use personal experience as their basis.
cause all the progressive comics are gold, Jerry, gold!
How's Garafalo's career... Louis CK talks about understanding those that throw babies in dumpsters. Not condone, but understands. 🙂 Tried to teach his kids not everyone gets what everyone else does cause life aint fair, but did give in to the whining.
I think it's funny how worked up liberals get over Rush.
I'll think it's funny when Rush has a heart attack and dies.
Can you name an instance in world history where rightwing radio demagoguery led to good things?
Can you name one instance where Rush caused bad things to happen?
Making people stupid and angry en masse is one of the greatest crimes against humanity I can think of.
Pretty ironic, considering that's what you get paid to do at the shitty newspaper you work for.
Tony,
Just because listening to the radio makes you stupid and angry doesn't mean it makes everyone stupid and angry.
I only listen to NPR. Rarely makes me anything but informed.
Wow, so something totally vague and can't be proven is all you got. Figures.
Not a fan of public schools, T o n y?
Making people stupid and angry en masse is one of the greatest crimes against humanity I can think of.
So, logically, you'd have to be against the First Amendment if you think someone's speech can lead to such heinous crimes.
Are you suggesting that speech can't lead to action?
The Rwandan genocide was fueled by talk radio.
No, just that the actual actions that cause violence should be punished, not the speech.
And one of my most fervent hopes is that people become educated enough so that we won't have to ever consider restrictions on speech, since rightwing demagoguery, which can and has led to genocide, won't affect people as much.
Making people stupid and angry en masse is one of the greatest crimes against humanity I can think of.
Judges ruling: is this the dumbest thing to ever be posted on the internet? I vote yes.
Making people stupid and angry en masse is one of the greatest crimes against humanity I can think of.
You monster.
I'll think it's funny when Rush has a heart attack and dies.
pretty well tells you all you ever needed to know about the left. Keep it klassy, sparky.
Hey now! Don't get me involved in Tony's douchebaggery.
Can you name an instance in world history where rightwing radio demagoguery led to good things?
1994 election. Republicans took the house and Clinton and the Republicans were forced to control spending which eventually lead to a balanced budget.
this rises to indefensibility? Man, you folks need a higher bar to griefing.
Every time Rush says something indefensible even by his cretinous listeners, you play the humor card.
Rush is talking about a comic book character.
As a former comic book reader and collector I am offended by Rush's ignorance.
...
But from any perspective other then a comic book fan I fail to see how this is anything but comedy.
Are you a comic book fan Tony?
It should also be pointed out that Obama on many occasions has made mistakes in regards to sports and sports fandom.
Is it funny that he made those mistakes?
you bet.
Is it a reason to not vote for him or disagree with his politics?
Nope.
It's ridiculous, but why give any attention to Rush Limbaugh?
He says ridiculous things in the hope that websites like this will write about him.
Incidentally, one of the reasons people vote for Obama is because they think by doing so, they're stickin' it to Limbaugh.
Which means, yes, writing about teh stupid shit Limbaugh says is objectively pro-Obama.
But pretty much all of those people would vote D no matter what. So I think Limbaugh is pretty irrelevant most of the time. He does a funny show, gets huge ratings and makes millions, and gives dingbat leftists a bogeyman. It is all part of the act.
Swing voters vote against the bogeyman.
His act isn't harmless.
He's done so much to make swing voters vote for the left over the years, you'd think he was planted by Democratic operatives or something.
so the musings of a radio talker who cannot spend a single dime of taxpayer money, who cannot author a single word of legislation, who does not represent a single human being in any legislative body is responsible for the actions of swing voters. Speaks poorly to swing voters.
Swing voters are some of the dumbest people on the planet.
I didn't say their behavior was rational.
I said it was their behavior.
He's done so much to make swing voters vote for the left over the years,
Citation please? Last I looked the Republicans have controlled the house 12 out of the last 18 years and have 2-3 in Presidential elections. That is just not true Ken. I don't know who you call a "swing voter". But most of us call them Democrats.
Citation please?
"Nobody ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public."
---H.L. Mencken
That is just not true Ken. I don't know who you call a "swing voter". But most of us call them Democrats.
That's right. I'm talking about swing voters who vote Democrat--because they're so disgusted by the stupid shit people like Limbaugh say, they'd rather stick it to him than vote in their economic interests.
Although, one thing I'd correct is that the shitheads we have in the Republican Party, who give lip service to things like taxes and cutting spending but never actually do anything about it?
I suspect we're a victim of that because of all the stupid shit loudmouths say that gets into the media as well. If people started ignoring all that crap (on both sides of the aisle) I dare say we'd have more rational economic policies today.
In fact, jettisoning all that stupid crap Limbaugh and the rest of echo chamber radio is all about--may be absolutely necessary before we ever see anything like rational budget cutting.
...certainly if we're ever gonna slash the budget voluntarily.
In fact, jettisoning all that stupid crap Limbaugh and the rest of echo chamber radio is all about--may be absolutely necessary before we ever see anything like rational budget cutting.

Ken Shultz: "So, Mr. Senator, what do you plan to do about the budget deficit? Isn't the president's plan to expand Medicare to cover prescriptions likely to make it even harder to slash the budget?"
GOP Senator: "Look, a squirrel Terry Shaivo!"
Ken Shultz: "Huh?"
Rush Limbaugh: "LOL"
You won't be laughing when the Repubs nominate Dr. John Von Doom in 2024.
Okay, I get that Limbaugh knows fuck-all about comics. I don't realy expect him to, much like I don't expect people I work with to be experts on Rennaissance poetry. But doesn't he have staff to research this shit? I think 5 minutes on wikipedia or Marvel's wiki would have cleared this up for him.
I think he was joking. Most of what he says, especially the really over the top stuff like this, is a joke. Everyone but his liberal listeners get the jokes.
There is no way in hell Rush has any idea about Batman comic books.
In order for him to make that joke he would have to have some knowledge.
While I agree with everything you said I'm pretty sure he could have scoured every page in Marvel's wiki in minute detail and it would not have helped in this case.
Oh, yeah, DC still exists. I forget that sometimes.
Tony of course is the Joker, and Mary Stack would be Two-Face. Though in her case it's really more like Twenty-Face.
Limbaugh's point is comical, not just for the timing -- Bane tries to appeal to the Occupy Wall Street crowd. He's not one of the 1 percent, but Bruce Wayne is.
This might instead be a conspiracy on behalf of Christopher Nolan. By picking a villain with a name similar to that of a real political issue, he could attempt to get higher viewership. Yep, that's probably it.
Just wait until the events of the movie are said to have been inspired by the OWS movement even though they wrote the story over a year before anyone even thought up OWS.
It is a movie about a guy who runs around in black tights and a cape fighting a crime. There is a pretty low limit on how seriously you can take any of it.
It's like a Rorschach test.
Rorschach is a serious antihero.
Rorschach is a serious fucking badass, is what he is.
Also, insane.
Well Bain blows up both the Gotham stock exchange and a football stadium. So it's pretty much wish-fullfillment for most left-wingers and Occutards even if Nolan wrote the movie before all that happened.
You're assuming Nolan didn't gen up OWS to help sell tickets for the movie.
What's been odd and continues to be odd to me is how much Limbaugh serves as a proxy for many on the left for the Republican Party. Like he's president or something. Heck, I'm not sure that many right-wingers take him totally seriously.
I don't know anyone who takes him seriously. He really is the Right's Jon Stewart. For the life of me I can't understand why liberals get so fixated and angry about him. Turn the damned station if it is that bad.
He doesn't strike me as tremendously influential, either, beyond being able to generate outrage memes.
He makes a lot of money. But he mostly preaches to the choir. He tells a certain group of people things they want to hear. And he is hugely successful because for a long time he was the only guy who would talk to that group.
I guess liberals hate him because his rating success proves how biased the mainstream media is. Limbaugh has always said his show was an alternative to the constant liberal barrage from the mainstream media. And the fact that his show has been so successful for so long really proves that. And liberals hate him for it.
it's the same reason they hate Fox. Ruppert Murdoch's decision was inspired by catering to a niche that was being ignored by the MSM - 50% of the country that thought the other networks were inherently biased.
"People who want to be lied to unrelentingly" is a market niche now?
It's been that way with your favorite leftwing publications for a long time, Tony.
Given that describes about 80% of the human population I would say it qualifies as a bit more than a Niche.
The only thing that differientiates Fox viewers from MSNBC viewers is which lies they want to be told.
Bzzz. False equivalence alert. Liberals value empirical methods, (American) conservatives don't.
You mean those same American Liberals who believe in Reiki and think immunizations cause Autism?
Yes we hate him for his success. Making old white people stupider and angrier than they would have been otherwise has made him a lot of money and provided the country with a lot of unnecessary grief.
Don't pick NPR like that Tony.
"He makes a lot of money. But he mostly preaches to the choir. He tells a certain group of people things they want to hear."
But he's not a Leftitst and that's their schtick.
He was good at ignoring the second-most viable Republican candidate so much that mainstream Republican primary voters thought the candidate was still fringe.
He doesn't strike me as tremendously influential
He was influential in the fact that in the 80s and 90s he was the only national voice in media that countered the left.
Disagree or agree with him his influence has been huge.
I know. These days I only hear about Rush from angry lefties. Hell, look at Shrike and O3 - they seem to be the only ones constantly talking about him.
And Hanity. They are obsessed with Hanity. I didn't even know who Hanity was until MNG accused me of being Hanity's slave. It is just pathetic.
I find Hannity's appeals to patriotism really annoying. Why do the Tony's of the world think I must eat this up just because Hannity and I don't like Obama? It's about all we have in common.
He's quite the shill.
now if Romney actually looked like Bane he would have my vote. Instead, I'm voting for me.
Me too. Lord Humungus for Ruler of the Wasteland 2012!
There has been too much violence, too much pain.
None here are without sin.
But I have an honorable compromise.
Just walk away.
If only they would let me.
I'm confident that The Dark Knight Rises is going to be the Return of the Jedi of the Nolan Batman series: good, but not as great as its predecessors.
Will there be Ewoks? Because I would pay good money to see Batman and/or Bane fight Ewoks.
SPOILER: Batman doesn't defeat Bane, the Ewoks do.
What, the last third is going to include Ewoks? I don't know that I can tolerate that again.
What, the last third is going to include Ewoks?
As a heterosexual male I feel safe in saying that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is as cute and fuzzy as any Ewok.
Don't post that on Rotten Tomatoes. Apparently the fan boys are having none of it.
The trailer I saw gave me bad vibes. That scene with the football player running across the field as the ground caved in behind him felt like something out of a bad Jerry Bruckheimer film.
bad Jerry Bruckheimer film
Is there any other kind?
I knew someone would say that, but I was sure it would be Epi. I should have said "especially bad" or "particularly bad." However, I will say in Jerry's defense that The Rock was one of my favorite action movies as a kid.
I hated that movie.
The Rock was terrible for a lot of reasons, but Sean Connery managed to singe handedly offset most of the terrible. "I was trained by the best: British Intelligence." He was pretty much playing an old version of the original James Bond.
It reminded me of 2012, where the limo keeps driving as the freeway collapses under it. Not sure why Hines Ward kept running -- it's not like the TD was going to count.
Is Anne Hathaway going to be sporting a metal bikini for the first third of the movie? 'Cause I'd be fine with that.
The dictionary is out to get Romney too.
Romney identifies much more closely with Bruce Wayne.
Where's my shoutout? I posted this in the bloomberg thread
"Do you think that it is accidental, that the name of the really vicious, fire-breathing, four-eyed, whatever-it-is villain in this movie is named Bane?"
Yes, yes I do. Rush was much more lucid when he was popping pain killers like they were candy.
Also, Tolkien's Balrog in Moria was known as " Durin's Bane".
From what I've read Bill Bain seems like he was a pretty standup guy. It took soulless creatures like Mitt Romney to make capitalism into something worth hating.
Bill Clinton disagrees...who, unlike Obama, did cut government, did balance the budget, did promote free trade by signing NAFTA and did create jobs.
You are an idiot Tony.
If Mitt Romney did all the exact same shit with his business, but cut a hefty check to an Obama SuperPAC rather than running as a Republican for president, you'd idolize him.
Well, shrike would, anyway.
Regardless, Two-Face almost always wins the election
Clayface seems more likely.
Isn't the movie's main premise that Bane uses irrational occupy wall street sentiment to terrorize Gothem?
And you know the successful billionaire Bruce Wayne sets out to stop him....
Anyway I only get these plot points from watching the trailers. Perhaps the plot of the movie is different.
Well, I think the thing is - why this villain for the movie?
Granted, being a non-nerd adult, I haven't read comic books for 30 years. But is "Bane" really a popular villain in Batman's universe?
I mean, in case you hadn't noticed, Hollywood is completely in the tank for the Democrats. Something like this should not be a shock.
Granted, being a non-nerd adult, I haven't read comic books for 30 years. But is "Bane" really a popular villain in Batman's universe?
Yes. Also The Riddler or Poison Ivy would not fit the Nolan films very well.
Bane is the logical choice for keeping with the dark and more realistic tone of the previous two films.
I mean, in case you hadn't noticed, Hollywood is completely in the tank for the Democrats. Something like this should not be a shock.
The politics of Comic Book action flicks generally are pretty conservative. Nolan's batman films have been pretty conservative.
In all honesty it is kind of sad that Rush has not noted this.
A) Why not? He's fairly major in the comic books just for being the guy that fucked Batman's shit up.
B) Nolan's Batman has, if anything, been right-wing. Ras was a foreign terrorist. Joker was social disorder incarnate. Bane is some kind of Occutard Messiah.
Bane is a set up and lead in to the darker, Frank Miller stuff.
This is the breaking of the Batman--a very pivotal story. Small wonder that Nolan would finish with it.
Limbaugh is of course well aware of the Bane character and its history with Batman. He's also well aware of the fact that his listeners are such mindless drones they'll believe ANYTHING that comes out of his mouth.
Limbaugh knows that Bane first appeared in comic books in 1993?
Give me a fucking break.
The more likely scenario is he recalls the batman 1960s TV show and did not recall Bane being in it so he thought "Hollywood" invented him for this movie.
