California Assembly Approves High-Speed Rail Funding, Now With Higher Price Tag!
As expected, the Assembly has approved $5.8 billion to start construction of the Central Valley portion of the state's high-speed rail project. The vote was 51-27. Oh and the proponents worked to secure the support of Los Angeles and San Francisco legislators by adding another $2 billion to improve light rail in those regions. So in order to try to wrangle support for the $68 billion (estimated) project, they are going to spend even more money, not less.
The state Senate has taken up the bill and may vote tomorrow. As The Sacramento Bee reports, it's still not clear if there are enough Democratic votes in the Senate to move it forward:
Assemblyman Charles Calderon, D-Whittier, urged lawmakers to recall the work of previous generations of Californians, who built the state water project and its highway and university systems.
"We have issues, in terms of budget problems," he said. "Does that mean that we stop looking to the future?"

Seems appropriate
"At warp 10 we're going nowhere mighty fast."
"But main street still all cracked and broken."
"Sorry Mom, the mob has spoken."
Seems appropriate enough
Can somebody please give us some good news?
I don't mean like a Chapman BS take; I mean like some real honest to God good news for libertarians...
'cause this libertarian's been down so god damn long that it looks like up to me.
The Declaration of Independents is now out in paperback!
+$10.19 @Amazon
($10.19? WTF?)
I'd spend 2.99 on it like I did on High Desert BBQ for ebook.
WTF? No free download?
FUCKING IP FASCISTS!11!!!!!111!!!!
I checked out the ebook at the library...
Thank you.
There was talk of it being a German language manifesto: Die Erkl?rung der Unabh?ngigen.
Ken, you need to join us in Up North Michigan. Or even WAY Up North (UP). It's sooooo pretty once you're north of about Clare. Southeast MI is for jobs and sucking - Northern MI is for reducing your blood pressure about 20 pts and not giving a fuck about all the tools in the world.

Plus, guns and hunting and water and boats and sand and islands and camping and solitude (or not) and great weather and....
Girls too?
Sounds great.
...but I can't shake the feeling that either Jerry or Obama are gonna try to fuck that all up somehow.
Sending positive thoughts your way - hope you feel more chipper soon 🙂
Great weather for about a month in the summer after the 11 months of winter.
Great weather, if you're a frickin' Eskimo.
Some people really groove on the whole winter thing, and that's cool (ha!), but after 12 years in Wisconsin, I've had my fill.
Find out what pure feels like in the waters...of Pure Michigan.
Have you considered taking drugs, Ken?
I have found that drugs offer a measure of solace in these trying times of rampant statism. Maybe drugs could help you too.
I'll take that under consideration.
Can somebody please give us some good news?
This place runs on pessimism, cynicism, sarcasm, defeatism, nihilism...why would you want to go and spoil all the fun, Ken? Why do you hate libertarianism, Ken?
Well, Hugo Chavez has cancer, and it's probably both painful and terminal. And private space travel might be a thing in the coming decades.
OT: I'd care, except we're now in "Up North" Michigan, on the banks of Lake Michigan. Got the Honda XR in the bed of the Super Duty. We'll spend tomorrow in Peninsulandia, then head for the island Sat AM. NO cell phone bars once you're halfway to da island. YES!
Too bad we're only there for two full weeks :*(
Were there some Supreme Court rulings recently? Is it hot somewhere? Cause it's REALLY NICE on Lake Michigan, bitches!

Seattle has finally crept above 60.
70 degrees in Newport Beach, California with a stubborn marine layer that just won't burn away even though it's July and not June anymore.
My favorite time of the year here. June gloom can last all summer for all I care.
Absolutely. People say "this awful weather" and I'm thinking, are you crazy? Just because the sun isn't annoyingly bright and it's under 80? It's totally comfortable, and some people find a way to complain anyway.
Mine too, keep the marine layer coming for a while please.
Astounding that there seem to be so many Californians here.
90+ for like the tenth day in a row here in NYC. I hate all of you.
I would kill you to only be in the 90s.
Previous record high for yesterday here was 98, we broke it by 8 degrees or something.
Don't worry, we here in CA may get on the high speed rail to bankruptcy.
"reasonable" as in "likely accurate"
"The state Senate has taken up the bill and may vote tomorrow. As The Sacramento Bee reports, it's still not clear if there are enough Democratic votes in the Senate to move it forward"
Built by unions, run by unions, maintained by unions, ridden by no one.
Yep, plenty of votes!
Assemblyman Charles Calderon, D-Whittier, urged lawmakers to recall the work of previous generations of Californians
Oh, "recall" as in "Remember". I thought that by forcing this turd through the pipe they were Grey-Davis-recalling the work of previous generations.
"We have issues, in terms of budget problems," he said. "Does that mean that we stop looking to the future?"
If by "look to the future" you mean "build a hideously expensive train that no one needs and no one will ride" than no, you don't need to look to the future.
California looks to Greece.
Since when is saddling the future with crippling debt "looking to the future"?
Seems like a reasonable forecast.
That makes a whole lot of sense dude.

Your Stupidar needs a calibration check, AnonBot. Please look after it. Thank you.
In related news you won't find elsewhere, CA's big engineering firms like MWH Global, Parsons, and CH2MHill will drain the high-scorers from the pool of recent engineering graduates and employ them to do nothing.
Well, if you're gonna go, you might as well go big. Why not add another $20 billion on to the price tag?
California, aka Dumbfuckistan.
OT:
Adam Baldwin is a fucking useless cheerleader for team red. Probably not news.
Because of his support for Obama?
And his big brother Alec is a fucking useless Team Blue fellator.
Families can be fucked up, yo.
He's not related to Alec or the other Baldwin brothers.
And even so, he's got viewpoints that are at least 50% tolerable even if he's a Team player that'll stump for Romney. There are worse things an actor can be.
Shrug. Not really. Team players are the worst thing actors/celebs/any idiot with influence can be.
He's talking about Jayne Cobb.
Yes they can! Nothing wrong with that. But I challenged him on supporting Romney and he ended up just deleting all his replies to me. The last one said that I like Obama or something. Whatever. He can't think critically. He can just complain about the current admin. Prove me wrong please.
Who the hell is Adam Baldwin?
The man they call Jayne. Hero of Canton.
Also one of Chuck's handlers, the big scowly guy, not the hot blonde chick, if you ever watched that show.
Never mind. Wrong Baldwin. My B.
I, too, forgot the Baldwin Family Tree.
This would be stupid enough if California was rolling in dough, but we're broke and in debt, and we're building high-speed rail between Fresno and Bakersfield, and it will lose money forever. I thought the GOP was supposed to be the party "at war with reality."
They're the *other* party "at war with reality". Team Blue only has a fifty percent lock on that title.
Why do you hate migrant farmworking kids?
Also, fried chicken.
Let's see... $5.8 billion divided by $214 (cost of a ticket on Southwest airlines from San Jose to LA), I get...
2.7 million people could get from SJC to LAX a whole lot faster.
Hasn't anyone told those pinheads in the legislature about the Wright brothers?
-jcr
Oops, slipped a decimal. 27 million people could get a flight for that kind of scratch.
-jcr
That's 5.8 billion to link two low density cow towns in the middle of nowhere. The LA to SF total is projected to be eleven times as much = 294 million passenger flights.
Vacaville to Vacaville; $5,8B.
Hey, moonbeam loves it!
I once calculated that, for the ORIGINAL projected cost of CA's HSR, you could commission a vast fleet of modern-day Zeppelins (that company still exists and produces new-design dirigibles) that could provide an endless "sky train" circulating around the State. The transit wouldn't be quite as rapid as with HSR, but it would generally be more inspiring. The fleet of Zeps would be much kinder to the environment, and could start carrying passengers to popular destinations years sooner than the HSR. OK, sure, I was being half-facetious. But also half-serious. I do think the scheme would work, and would end up being far more realistic, cost-efficient, and ultimately, more "down to earth" than the pie-in-the-sky HSR plans.
I thought California was broke?
Well, yeah. But they are going for shattered - in a suicidal gesture of stupidity that will be remembered for generations.
They are. This useless, expensive make-work project is the thing that will get them back to solvency!
-Krugman, Tony, o3 (or pip from Great Expectations or whatever alt he's using these days) and shriek.
Don't know if this story was in the links earlier, but Kelly Thomas' father is suing the Fullerton police department. Hope he gets every cent, not that it's much consolation.
Remember kids, when cops fuck up you pay.
Houston, we're coming in for a landing.
Roger that!
Yeah in certain angles and what not she is still hot. But without those angles or fixes she is not all that. Whatever.
lol, politicians are such idiots.

I humbly suggest that the alt-text should be "Merde."
What is with the Bullet Train envy? It's as if "everyone knows" that "every modern nation/economy" needs a bullet train and nationalized health care.
