Senators Rand Paul, Jim DeMint, Mike Lee Unveil Plan That Balances Budget in Five Years and "fixes Medicare in its entirety"
From the press release:
Sen. Rand Paul today unveiled his FY2013 budget, "A Platform to Revitalize America," a plan that would balance the budget in five years, significantly reduce spending, and restore fiscal order to Washington. […]
"Americans deserve not only to have the debt reduced, but to have every taxpayer dollar spent more wisely. While Washington continues to spend recklessly and ignore the ever-growing deficit, I am offering a plan that will address this country's looming debt crisis in a truly timely manner - balancing the budget in just five years," Sen. Paul said. "The time has come for a change that will restore fiscal order in this country, and I will do everything in my power to ensure that this happens."
"The biggest problem facing the nation right now is the out-of-control spending and borrowing. The Budget Control Act doesn't address the underlying problems, and it's been well over 1,000 days since Senate Democrats passed a budget. I stand behind anyone who is willing to confront this issue through a serious proposal that will put us on the path toward a balanced budget," Sen. Lee said.
"This balanced budget makes the commonsense decision that we've got to stop spending more than we're bringing in," said Senator DeMint. "Already, what was once considered unthinkable has occurred: the creditworthiness and economic outlook of the United States of America has been downgraded. This is more than a national embarrassment, it's an indication that the world is losing confidence in America's ability to pay our bills and of our government to change course. This budget shows we can stop the debt crisis, improve our economy, expand freedom, and secure the future for our children and grandchildren."

Magical asterisks the size of an exploding Death Star.
Are you sure it's not "draconian" cuts?
They reduced the rate of increase in the defense budget from 15% to 10%? Those unbelievable bastages!

Yeah I'll bet they "fix" Medicare.

You be making Stern stern.
What do you mean tea party? That movement started out pretty liberterian, then there was a huge republican clusterfuck to join the movement. Now, just like the republican party, the tea party no longer represents a coherent political philosophy.
Yeah, why would any libertarian care about or support a balanced budget?
I is confused.

Kochtopus Cosmotarians here, of course. Where did you think you were, LvM?
The Tony spoof is smarter than the real Tony. Any doubters?
"Tony" is spoofers, all the way down.
I think the "original Tony" is an editor.
Reason had to fill the joe vacuum.
I miss joe... every once and a while I'd actually agree with him.
Tony... not so much.
I discovered a stupid joe thread when searching for Jonah Goldberg info. What is there to miss?
For awhile, I made a point of agreeing with joe once a week. It was like doing God's work in some of the toughest neighborhoods, so I quit.
You should get student loan forgiveness for that.
I think so, too.
Vacuum? What vacuum? People are so weird.
I thought "Tony" was the pen name used by whatever liberal college kid was bringing up whatever generic liberal/progressive talking point applied to the article the comment was posted on.

Could be, but if that's the case, they are all amazingly apt at the same logical failures and same general dishonesty.
They teach that in college

The original Tony appeared long before Joe left.
I don't have the patience to slog through old threads right now but someone found a Myspace or Facebook page of a Tony that arguably fit the profile of what is known of Tony a few years ago - Gay liberal douche supposedly from Oklahoma. I still doubt that Tony is real though.

I don't want MC and SS fixed, I want them gone and buried. Leaving them alive just allows future politicians to bloat them up again and put us right back in the same mess. Any solution other than a allowing young people like me to opt out and transitioning everyone else off is unacceptable.
transitioning everyone else off
I don't like the sound of that, Sonny.
I'm a yung'un and will never see SS. I'm afraid I'm too used to the idea of being screwed. It's internalized.
But isn't it just so much fun to watch that part of your paycheck disappear??
Best two fridays of every month!
It's even better when you only get paid once a month. That shit really hurts when you see it all at once.
That's the way we like it.
If you don't resist, it will be so much pleasanter for both of us.
The thing with the AARP is that their political power is derived from old people giving a shit while young people don't.
If the elderly end up sucking the lifeblood of anyone under 60 enough, the whole ponzi scheme will collapse pretty fast. SS is a promise from a government; ask the Indians what that is worth when the majority of voters don't care to honor the promise.

neither party has the political will to eliminate them and I doubt there is much sentiment in the public for that, either. Some folks just want back what they have put in, others will demand a safety net for the truly needy, fill in with another excuse/rationalization/justification.
Which is why I prefer the status quo over "fixing" it. I'm going to have to pay the taxes either way. At least with the status qup the system will collapse faster and I can stop paying.
That's pretty silly. This is NEVER how it goes down. The collapse will probably be used to implement more government. Best to play it safe and reform. So we don't go bacnkrupt.
I don't share your optimism about avoiding bankruptcy before I die.
I don't share your optimism that bankruptcy will lead to smaller government.
Oh, there's plenty of sentiment to kill of Socialist Security and Meh-dicare, but the problem is that old people vote, and young people don't.
It's worse than that actually, in that there a more older people than there are younger ones.
"Defense" spending?
Tom Woods makes a good point.
It's only offense when They do it, say the "moral absolutists." Making them the real moral relativists.
It was much more honest when they called it "The Department of War".
Rand Paul proposed a budget to go along with this that balances in 5 years. It INCLUDES a REUDUCTION in defense spending. I'm beginning to think you stupid fucks don't pay attention to anything but yourselves
God damn you are a fucking retard.
Let me break it down for you: Not Sure put defense in quotation marks because many people would argue that what we do with our military is offense, not defense.

let's consider that list in terms of reality:
--Keystone will happen at some point, even if Obama is re-elected since he will no longer care what the enviros think (as if he did to start with)
--exploration somewhere, Arctic or elsewhere, is likely too since there is no green/renewable/sustainable energy source in existence yet
--SCOTUS may well solve Obamacare with the decision on the mandate; otherwise, crapshoot
--privatizing TSA makes too much sense
--the rest is white noise; how long have we heard about shuttering departments?
The noise is why any person in opposition to cuts will dismiss the whole thing.

"The art of the possible" is total, absolute, bullshit. Politics needs to get back into the little box we made for it back in 1789. That isn't happening by incremental little steps that make everyone happy.

This budget would also require the countries that we assist to begin providing more funding to their own defense. European, Asian, and Middle Eastern countries have little incentive to increase their own military budgets, or take control of regional security, when the U.S. has consistently subsidized their protection.

Extensive quotation of Hayek on page 31 of the plan under Department of Education.
One such quote:
"The very magnitude of the power over men's minds that a highly centralized and government-dominated system of education places in the hands of the authorities ought to make one hesitate before accepting it too readily."
--F.A. Hayek, Nobel Prize Economist
Or don't bother to hesitate, and just don't accept it at all.
And this-
Privatizes Transportation Security Agency
pisses me off. Don't "fix" it; don't "privatize" it; abolish it.
Isn't the most stringently constitutionalistic/libertarian thing about Rand an explicit hatred for bloat and alphabet agencies? I'm betting some of those half-way freedom-increasing things are half-way because he wants at least SOME chance of his plan passing. Otherwise, he's certain to be completely fucked.
If they privatize it I think that it will disappear and only the essential functions that the airlines really need will be left as their security measures evolve.
It totally sucks, but if individual airports or airlines wanted to have their own security that was exactly the same as TSA that should be their prerogative. Of course it's my prerogative to say fuck you I'm flying with those guys that don't want to rape my 2 year old.
Wonderful rhetoric = where's the beef?
I'm glancing over the details and im not really blown away. Re: "Progressive indexing" of social security?
The Primary Insurance Amount (PIA) formula willbe modified between 2018 and 2055 to graduallyreduce benefits on a progressive basis for workerswith career-average earnings above the 40th percentile of new retired workers
This is basically saying that those who put the most in, get nothing out. They don't need it! Kind of a little 'fuck you' to the middle class if you ask me.
Medicare? Even better =
This section will be updated, with greater details provided, after the bill is introduced inMarch 2012.

Yeah, looking at the document, it doesn't seem to deliver on the claims. Maybe unicorn rainbow farts are gonna fix medicare.
There's no money. It doesn't matter if you think people who paid Social Security taxes should or shouldn't get a tax-funded pension when they're older. There's no money. Morality is not the same as math, because there's no money. Want your benefits? Fuck you, says math, because there's no money.
Lots of people were planning to retire on the money Madoff promised them. But there was no money.
Math is a real prick sometimes.
There is no need to "fix" Medicare or SS. All we need to do is let the Bush tax cuts expire, then Medicare and SS will be entirely solvent and sustainable forever.
The fact that you libertards want to dismantle this safety net in order to protect these tax cuts that are somehow necessary for freedom speaks volumes. Besides, it's not like any of you will see your taxes go up if the Bush tax cuts expire.
Tony, as a citizen is it responsible or irresponsible to provide for your own retirement?
Have you provided for your own retirement?
I did not think so.
You don't want a safety net, you want others to pay your way.
Since many Americans are unemployed, underemployed or barely able to pay their bills, it is unrealistic to say they can save for the future, especially enough to pay for retirement, which could last for decades.
But, the rich need that extra 4%, so let those people starve.
IT TAKES MORE
THAN FUCKING SOMEONE YOU DON'T KNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW
TO KEEP YOURSELF WARM
Since many Americans are unemployed, underemployed
So we only need to provide retirement for 10% of the work force rather then 100%?
I am cool with that....and apparently you are cool with that as well so we can actually cut taxes now to pay for that small number of retirees.
Problem solved.
You only addressed two of the three groups I mentioned. Re-read my post, and we will talk.
OK, shithead, define "barely able to pay their bills".
I had to lay off the upstairs maid to pay for the gardening bill of my villa on St. Thomas. I'm barely paying the damned bills.

Policy Proposal:
Presidential Rescission Authority
In these times of budget constraints and deadlocked Congress, Senator John McCain and Representative Paul Ryan have proposed to renew a presidential rescission authority. They argue that it would help end wasteful pork barrel spending. The line item veto power granted by a Newt Gingrich lead House of Representatives to President Clinton was found unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in Clinton v. City of New York, 524 U.S. 417 (1998). However, the Ryan/McCain proposal is different in that it limits the President to only proposing certain items for rescission Congress must then perform an expedited ,up or down, vote on the revised spending package and then the president would sign the new bill if passed.
I guess that answers the question of whether Rand is running for president in 2020 (2016 if Obama wins...Obama won't).
The Patriot Act will be amended to allow the President (only in case of a terrorist threat of course) to suspend elections and allow a president to serve more than two terms.
He should be President for Life. We'd be fine with that.
Worked for me!
Um, until I died, that is...
(contd)
and the third biggest chunk, 'regulaton', gets similar treatment, albeit with more detail. Its first component is forcing regulatory agencies to do cost-benefit analysis. Oh, I'm SURE they'll discover with shock, "We provide no value! We MUST slash out budgets!
Thats like an out-of-towner driving into a small town car-repair shop and saying to the mechanic, "Uhh. Its making a noise. Is something wrong?"...and expecting him to go, "Naw man, its *fine*, its just you need a little extra fluid here and you're good to go! No charge stranger!" Fuck no. You're not getting out of there without a tune up, oil change, alignment, inspection, and probably some new fucking tires. The system *relies* on the ignorance of most of its customers.
But what about waste, fraud, and abuse?
Without those, we'd only save a tiny amount... like the four percent tax increase we desperately want, which isn't a tiny amount.
It balances the budget, fixes Medicare...that's right, it filets, it chops, it dices, slices, never stops, lasts a lifetime, mows your lawn, and it picks up the kids from school. It gets rid of unwanted facial hair, it gets rid of embarrassing age spots. It delivers a pizza, and it lengthens, and it strengthens and it finds that slipper that's been at large under the chaise lounge for several weeks, and it plays a mean Rhythm Master, it makes excuses for unwanted lipstick on your collar...

It turns a sandwich into a banquet...
More strawmen!
How surprising!
Not being an ass, but I'm in the dark too. Could you provide a link or something?
.... So.
This is what I'd like: SS & MC gone.
AND everyone who has paid into FICA gets out exactly what they've put in.
That means ~7% of my salary over those many years back to me, and ~7% back to my employer. I think I can find better ways of saving and investing that each year to better my retirement.
Yeah, right. Guess again. Maybe you'll get 20 cents on the dollar. Maybe. You know, sure-as-shit, the money will go towards union pensions. GM shareholders didn't even get 10 cents on the dollar, but the unions got their stock, didn't they?
You idiots really thought the gubmint was a good investment?
Where's the philosophy?
Thanks for the post on this, Matt. (Hey, if I bitch about not seeing one, I have to give props when I gets it.)
Nice interview.
Nice interview.
nice interview
The biggest problem facing the nation right now is the out-of-control spending and borrowing and the fact that nobody is serious about doing anything about it. Once you accept that defense and SS and Medicare not only cannot and will not be cut but will in fact increase, everything else is small potatoes.
I can't wrap my mind around the fact that we are *TRILLIONS* of dollars in debt and have *TENS* of trillions of dollars in liabilities while we have a GDP (all the freaking money we have coming in) of ~15 trillion and people still think tinkering around the edges of the system is going to fix things.
They are prescribing aspirin for pancreatic cancer.
If dunphy happens upon this thread, maybe we could get him to explain why the city of Seattle would rather shell out $300k this year to settle suits instead of releasing police records. I mean, if they've got nothing to hide...oh wait, that's what they say to us.
Uh, sloopy, I know you have a gripe with Dunphy, but ya know, some threads have a 'subject'.
And here we have a budget proposal that decreases military spending and a fix for medicare. Do you stupid fucks really think people rely and paid into medicare are going to just scrap the shit? Some of you stupid shits are too fucking stupid to see when you're making progress
Yeah, you really think Rand Paul has any attributes we like? He's just another Romney
Needs more gamboling.

If Senator DeMint is ready to be part of the solution, he should endorse Ron Paul right now.

"commonsense decision that we've got to stop spending more than we're bringing in" it seem that candidates remembers this fact only before election. When the pressures of medi and socials and other government grants becomes reality, the spending and increase borrowing becomes the norm. Most times the load is transferred to the tax payers cushions like the pension funds and other funds. l feel the government should start taking more drastic fiscal policy to their budgeting and sit up to prevent a great depression.
