Reason.tv in Iowa: Why Are People Digging Ron Paul?
"I'm keeping my fingers crossed," says presidential hopeful Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) the night before the Iowa caucus. "I think we may have some dramatic, good news for tomorrow night." Paul supporters at the Prime N Wine in Mason City, Iowa were in high spirits during his final stop on the Iowa Whistle-Stop Tour, which he embarked upon with his son, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.).
Reason.tv was on the scene to gauge the mood and to investigate what it is about the Texas congressman that inspires such a devoted following. Answers varied, but common themes were Ron Paul's consistency, his peaceful foreign policy, and his willingness to take serious steps to reduce the deficit.
Reason Senior Editor Brian Doherty, whose biography of Paul will be published in May, was also there to document the event and provide political commentary. "The interesting thing about Ron Paul fans that I found is that whatever hooks them first," says Doherty, "once they're hooked in, they decide, almost universally, that they like everything about him." Perhaps because they value his logical consistency, most of Paul's supporters told us that they would not be willing to support another Republican candidate should he fail to get the nomination.
While many pundits still consider a Paul nomination a long shot, Paul and his supporters feel optimistic about his chances in Iowa. "I definitely expect Ron Paul to come in over 20 [percent]," says Doherty. "Absolutely he'll finish a strong second, and a win is definitely still a possibility."

"Why are people digging Ron Paul?"
Well - RAAAAAAAAAAAAACIST!
DUH!
Let me guess, the people who think Reason speaks as a unified voice, thinks Reason hates Ron Paul, and thinks Reason wants to sabotage his campaign have been noticeably absent these past few comment threads.
They're saving up their outrage in case Paul is defeated. Then the recriminations will make the Balkans look like a Sunday-school picnic.
It's pretty obvious to Reason that no one likes Reason and its stance on half the things Reason stances on, so Reason is making a very public show of love for Ron Paul today to derail him.
Those sly bastards.
I'm going to make a concerted effort to use "stance" as a verb in at least one sentence today.
"Stance" happens!
Stance With Fist!
The release of Stance With Fist!'s latest album has been delayed yet again as more infighting lead to another destroyed recording studio.
Stances with Wolves.
Sturdy Stancing.
WTF? It's 9:13 and no morning links. Surely the staff isn't nursing a three day hangover?
Surely the staff isn't nursing a three day hangover?
Well, they *are* libertarians. 😉
Why not post your own links?
Careful what you ask for.
You know who else people were digging on....
Egyptian pharaohs?
I spent some time in Iowa last September and I never saw fatter people in my life. The old people were fat, the adults were fat, the kids and babies...all fat. Everything you elitist Coasters have heard about fat Flyovers is true. I ate a corn dog at the dirt track races one night. So did a thousand Iowans. It was disgusting. The end.
Anyone looking for some Fat Coasters, visit Dundalk, MD sometime.
Fun Fact: laziness and cheap food are not exclusive to Flyover Country.
My stretch marks have stretch marks!
Should have kept going north to Wisconsin.
It's like Love, Actually and That 70's Show are fiction or some alternate reality.
Should be interesting to see how that all works out in the end.

I approve this message.
Ron Paul is the only candidate opposed to Racism and Favoritism.
Check it:

No.
Pass the chili cheese fries.
Do I have to be the first one to not be cynical and say this is a goddamned exciting as hell day for libertarians and the basic ideals we all embrace regardless of our various differences? I just wish I didn't live in the future so I didn't have to wait till tomorrow to find out what happened.
I'll agree with you on this. You can fight all you want about RP's relevancy to libertarianism, but he's come a long way in 4 years to promote liberty, sound money, and a realistic forgien policy. Its exciting and I hope the movement can ride this trajectory in to coming elections. I just wonder who will be taking RPs torch.
One thing we know for sure--that racist bag of shit Ron Paul will never get the nomination.
No he won't. Conservatives luv war too much.
And "progressives" love free shit more than stopping accidental murder of innocents, unjust incarceration of black people, and curbing Lockheed Martin's profits because they are disingenuous fucks.
In re Paul's appeal to younger voters, has anybody explored the possible if unlikely connection between it and the many tens/hundreds/whatever thousands of Asperger Syndrome persons reaching voting age?
I only thought of it because I read something about Iowa and then something about Asperger's this morning. (And I have a son diagnosed with AS, and likely would have it myself if I hadn't been born before it was invented.) But electioneering and governing are so incredibly malleable and amorphous and in ways arcane, that somebody running on themes that involve very simple answers to issues that other candidates spend tons of time fudging and obfuscating might have significant appeal in that way.
I mean no disrespect viz. "very simple," I just mean e.g. "under what circumstances should the President be able to indefinitely detain a terror suspect"; "how can we fix the shitty economy"; "should states be able to legalize and regulate medical marijuana use"; most candidates' answers are 2,500 weasel words, and Paul's are "none," "cut spending significantly" and "yes." That kind of thing. I suppose I mean "direct" more than I mean "simple."
"Racial violence will fill our cities [because] mostly black welfare recipients will feel justified in stealing from mostly white haves." --Ron Paul
Re: Maxipad,
And this is wrong, somehow, the flash mobs notwithstanding?
You are an absolute idiot, Maxipad. You expect people to ipso facot feel outraged by such comments despite the fact that a) they're factual and b) people are a bit smarter than you, even those that are brain-dead. Shit, I've seen flies that are smarter than you.
You need to work on your critical thinking skills. Of course, it's not easy to do with your head up your ass. Have you ever pulled it out?

"It certainly is possible that Ron Paul never read a publications produced in his own name, just as it's possible to sincerely believe that the Civil Rights Act destroyed personal liberties, and it's possible to sincerely believe that if you are going to vote, you should be able to read the names of the candidates, or that Lincoln destroyed the original values of the republic. But it's also true that those beliefs have long been used to shield more odious ones. Forgive me for being suspicious when I see them employed in combination." --Ta Nahishi Coates
Re: Maxipad,
Even YOU are not stupid enough to entertain such conclusion, are you pet yorkie?
But it's also true that those beliefs have long been used to shield more odious ones.
Ah, guilt by association, eh?
I wouldn't think anyone who is fan of mo bigga government would want to play that game.
Cool video from a cool guy. I love this guy!

He is the biggest phony of them all. Jesus Christ, who with half a brain would believe that he neither wrote nor knew about the racist diatribes? Ron Paul's fucking followers are brain-dead true believers who couldn't find their own asses with a flashlight.
