54 Percent of Americans Fear Government Action Will Hurt the Economy

Reeling from the onset of the 2008 financial crisis, politicians and candidates alike seemed to think everyone agreed that government needed to do something to combat the crisis. Now in 2011 the Reason-Rupe poll asked Americans what concerned them more—that government would fail to take action or that the government would take action but in so doing make things even worse. In response, a majority of Americans said they fear that government action will make things worse, rather than better, while 40 percent said they are afraid that the government will fail to take action.

This lack of confidence in government's ability, or even capability, is reflected in Congress' low approval rating of just 13 percent. Confidence in President Barack Obama is roughly split, with 49 percent approving of his performance and 47 percent disapproving.

In terms of the government's handling of the nation's current economic problems, what worries you more; that the federal government will take action that makes things worse, or the federal government will fail to take action?

Find full Reason-Rupe Q4 2011 poll results, question wording, and methodology here.

The Reason-Rupe Q4 2011 poll collected a nationally representative sample of 1200 respondents, aged 18 and older from all 50 states and the District of Columbia using live telephone interviews from December 1-13. Interviews were conducted on both landline and mobile phones. The margin of sampling error for this poll is +/- 3 percent.

Proof positive that we are doomed, Doomed, DOOMED:

49% of Americans approve of President Obama's presidency.

    1. Anonymous Coward   13 years ago

The government only hurts the economy because they love it.

If the economy would just behave, the government wouldn't have to keep hitting it.

Economy, why do you make the government beat you?

    2. Joe M   13 years ago

So 54% fear government action, and 49% approve of Obama. That means there is at least 3% of the population that is suffering massive, probably incurable, cognitive dissonance.

  2. Mad Scientist   13 years ago

Who in the hell are these 13% who think Congress is doing a good job?

    1. AlmightyJB   13 years ago

Those 13% are the people that are receiving all of the money that congress steals our money to give to.

      1. P B   13 years ago

        Lobbyists and staffers?

        1. Bones   13 years ago

And federal employees, as well as state employees whose salaries and budgets depend on federal dollars. And unions, of course.

        2. Sevo   13 years ago

Those lying in the gutter who can still fog a mirror?

  3. AlmightyJB   13 years ago

for Sloopyinca, in case you haven't yet heard. OSUs punishment:

      What did USC get, again?

    2. Gojira   13 years ago

Wow, that sucks. I need to get on the horn w/ my one rapid Buckeye friend to make sure he doesn't do something stupid.

Sloopy though can go hang for all I care.

Fuck the NCAA. Fuck Michigan, too.

    4. Apatheist   13 years ago

As a graduate of non-BCS school with 100% graduation rate in the last cycle I can only chuckle as the big boys who abandoned the student part of student-athlete long ago get heavy handed punishment for such minor transgressions. The whole thing is a joke at this point.

In terms of the government's handling of the nation's current economic problems, what worries you more; that the federal government will take action that makes things worse, or the federal government will fail to take action?

I think its apparent to everyone since the "debt ceiling debate->Supercommittee fail" sequence that government is capable of perhaps only 2 things

    -) Can-Kicking
-) Making things much, much worse with short term pretend-fixes, which are later overturned in favor of more Can-Kicking

  5. Gojira   13 years ago

And the vast majority of that 54% will go pull the lever for someone who promises to "do something"?.

  6. sarcasmic   13 years ago

Help us, Obi-Ron Paulobi. You're our only hope.

  7. sloopyinca   13 years ago

Speaking of government action: the DoJ adds East Haven, CT to the list of police departments that consistently break the law. No charges will be filed, of course.

    1. Res Publica Americana   13 years ago

Well, this series completely broke the post-1865 cast of stereotypes. It turns out that both Billy Yank and Johnny Reb police departments suck ass when the law and the people meant to vet it allow them to get away with shit like this.

The fact that only southerners speak DUMB and fuck their sisters, and the fact that only northerners can be progressives and anti-American, as I'm always told by regionally pertinent block Democrats and Republicans, is a pattern that doesn't apply to law enforcement. Who would have thought?

Seriously, though, do you expect any actual changes?

      1. sloopyinca   13 years ago

There will be no changes until one of these rogue run-of-the-mill cops murders the son or daughter of a US Senator.

        1. sarcasmic   13 years ago

Turns out my stepfather had connections with the local constabulary many years back. The guy in charge heard my stepfather's address over the radio, and the cop returned my papers with an apology for bothering me.

It was the one and only time a cop has treated me with anything other than malevolent contempt.

    2. sarcasmic   13 years ago

      They just need better training.

      Better training can fix anything.

  8. sloopyinca   13 years ago

Seattle PD more interested in finding out who spilled the beans to the DoJ than in straightening out their fucked up department full of criminals.

    1. Res Publica Americana   13 years ago

Why would they want to straighten themselves out? The only way they'll get their shit together, lose power, is if somebody does it forcefully, and from the outside.

  9. Auric Demonocles   13 years ago

54% of internet users fear that Etkins' posts will hurt alt-text.

  10. sloopyinca   13 years ago

A police department that actually holds itself accountable. Too bad their policy is in response to a stupid law, but at least they are consistent.

  11. mad libertarian guy   13 years ago

It'll work this time. I mean, the Seattle city council approved the plastic bag ban UNANIMOUSLY!!

    1. Joe M   13 years ago

Instead of becoming a leader on the issue, Seattle watched as other cities moved forward with bans and fees.

That sentence makes me want to cry. Like gut-wrenching sobs.

  12.   13 years ago

Question: "[Does it worry you more] that the federal government will take action that makes things worse"

Article: "...government would take action but in so doing make things even worse."

    These seem different to me.

  13. Dave Anthony   13 years ago

I'm worried that the government will fail to take action to undo the past actions that they did that made things worse.

  14. sloopyinca   13 years ago

Oh, and speaking of Arpaio's crew. Looks like they're up to their old tricks less than a week after the DoJ chronicles their myriad crimes.

  15. T   13 years ago

54% of the population has perfectly rational fears.

I'll go back to worrying about the impending Kumquat Menace.

  16. califronian   13 years ago

We in the midst of the greatest expansion of government power and control, oppression and intervention since FDR (except for Japanese americans of course), and it has been perpetrated over the last 10 to 12 years with maniacal glee by both right and left.

    Only 54% wtf.

    1. V   13 years ago

Remember mate, only three things are constant in this life: death, taxes, and mass stupidity.
