Let There Be Incandescent Light! Bulb Ban Delayed!
[Above: Remy's "Missing You - The Incandescent Light Bulb Song," originally released on December 1, 2011]
The massive, 1,200-page omnibus spending bill being rushed through Congress to avoid a government shutdown include at least one small bit of good news: It suspends the energy regulations signed by George W. Bush in 2007 that would have effectively banned 100-watt incandescent light bulbs as of January 1, 2011.
Reports the Wash Times, "The spending bill doesn't actually amend the 2007 law, but does prohibit the administration from spending any money to carry out the light bulb standards — which amounts to at least a temporary reprieve."
That means the regs will likely go into effect next fiscal year, which starts in October 2012.
Reason's coverage of the war on conventional light bulbs is here.
I was on the Stossel show recently, talking about the bulb regs and why they ultimately would reduce very little energy use among Americans:
And back in 2009, Reason.tv counted the ways in which compact-fluorescent light bulbs, the most widely available alternative to Edison's most-iconic invention, just kind of suck:

Sometimes I wonder what pisses me off more the idiot nanny statists, the welfare statists or the warfare statists
They're the same people so the answer is simply, "yes."
Probably the statists. Which would be all of them.
The Blue Statists and the Red Statsists? Blecch.
Don'tcha get it? Everybody is a statist!
"You're blue on one side and red on the other."
"I am blue on the right side."
"I fail to see the significant difference."
"My opponent is red on the right side. All of his people are red on the right side."
+1968 Star Trek.
+1 belly-star.
Even the City-statists?
/couldn't resist
Here's a TSA official that will likely lose his job. Unfortunately, he's the first one I found to be worth a fuck.
"I traveled with weed and got away with it thanks to this note the TSA guy left. LOLZ"
Way to make sure there's an investigation now genius.
It really pisses me off that TSA can do anything with a bag that is not a threat to the aircraft or people on it. I don't care if they find a dead hooker in a giant ziploc of heroine. She ain't taking down the plane. Move along.
I don't care if they find a dead hooker in a giant ziploc of heroine.
This is why we have RC'z Law. Most excellent typo, there, Bones.
"She ain't taking down the plane. Move along"
I don't think Ziploc? guarantees that a 'heroine' will not leak though into your luggage.
Bodily fluids can short a wire
Smart Zip, FTW!!!
Holy crap, this guy is a retard. (The owner of the suitcase, not the TSA agent.)
I can't watch the video, but I hope Nick made both a practical argument and a principled argument against the regulations.
Huzzah.
The stores have already been clearing out their stock. LEDs are starting to take over CFL. 75w / 100w eqv LED bulbs just need to come down on price.
LED Bulbs annoy me
it's the multi-edged shadows isn't it?
What will cartoons show over someone's head when they come up with a good idea once the incandescent light bulb is outlawed?
A CFL that gets brighter in each frame. Lots of frames. And then Road Runner breaks it as he speeds by and poor Wile E. dies from mercury exposure. Something like that.
I thought Road Runner and Wile E. were banned.
Too violent.
It depends. Are they Republicans or Democrats?
They're ludicrous caricatures, grotesque misrepresentations of nature.
So either Republican or Democrat, got it.
Reason threads are like volleyball, often the game is best played by setting up your teammates to score.
They're ludicrous caricatures, grotesque misrepresentations of nature.
I hope you're referring to both Team Red and Team Blue.
Naw, I was talking about your balls.
🙂
While occasionally red, I can assure you my balls are never blue.
You joke, but when ABC got the morning cartoon from CBS, they edited out the consequences of the violence.
So now we're teaching young kids that violence has no consequenses... great job ABC
That was my thought at the time. Even as a kid.
Someone put CFL floodlamps in my basement. It takes 10 minutes for full illumination and then everything is in shadow, no matter which way you stand.
I have them outside on the back porch. When it gets cold (50s) it takes forever for them to warm up. I can't imagine what people where it's actually cold are gonna do.
simple: just leave them on so they stay warm. you can practically feel the energy savings...
ha, yeah, my wife got a box of old CFLs from her office and I put them outside...in Iowa... In the winter. If we have people coming over I have to remember to turn the lights on thirty minutes before they show up.
Misrable fucking things.
A Unicorn.
Many computer programs still use a picture of a floppy disk as the icon for "save". I don't think the light bulb is going anywhere.
Alternate answer: they'll switch to a 60 W bulb.
The spending bill doesn't actually amend the 2007 law, but does prohibit the administration from spending any money to carry out the light bulb standards
No SWAT raids on Home Depot?
I am disappoint.
Sadly, you probably are.
I was on the Stossel show recently, talking about the bulb regs and why they ultimately would reduce very little energy use among Americans:
Vid won't load for me (my fault, not the quirrels), but I hope you noted the all-this-shit-adds-up energy usage increase from everyone who needs (or really wants) a 100w incandescent, because they all have to stay up marginal hours later or go out driving more marginal miles to make marginally more money?just to pay rent to Philips, who bought this little regulatory monopoly that makes every 100w but theirs illegal.
Which also partly answers "Why the hell are lefties so madly wedded to this one little nit of Industrial Policy?"
Because fascist fascist is fascist, all the fascist-long day.
I fascist you fascist fascistdeas and would fascist to fascist your fascistletter.
What will cartoons show over someone's head when they come up with a good idea once the incandescent light bulb is outlawed?
Obama, in the guise of the Idea Fairy, tapping the fortunate cogitator on the noggin with his magic idea wand.
I don't know, but I'm sure Chip Bok will screw it up.
lol
Not enough labels.
October 2012 will be here sooner than you think, and then I'll own your ass like a Pennsylvania football coach.
What are the chances manufacturers will stop making them anyway?
Slim to none.
Touche.
(psst. How come reason won't let me spell "touche" correctly? (with an accent mark))
You mean like this?
Touch
I don't think this will change any plans that retailers or manufacturers have. It sounds like the exact same regulations are in place, just without any money for enforcement.
The spending bill doesn't actually amend the 2007 law, but does prohibit the administration from spending any money to carry out the light bulb standards ? which amounts to at least a temporary reprieve.
I don't much buy the reprieve notion since I don't think this will result in these bulbs being available as long as sellilng them is still in fact illegal. I mean what merchant is going to risk some big penalty for selling them when it is still illegal to do so? Somewhere, there is someone who could selectively enforce it and sometime, there is someone who will.
Does the law have any penalty for retail sales of bulbs? I had assumed it was targeted at manufacturers and old stocks could still be sold.
Black Market dealers. That actually gives me a great idea... light bulb speak easy coming soon to the Denver metro area.
Fucking pussy Repubs. JUST REPEAL IT ALREADY! How fucking hard is that? Why are they tittyfucking around with this?!
WHy are they backing Newt?
Are you kidding? This is the perfect little issue to fight over again and again. Add it to the ever-growing list of wedges.
I have never really understood this sites obsession with Incandescent light bulbs, other than Raeason being the Grumpy Old Man of the internet.
It's not so much the light bulb, it's the principle of the darn thing.
Think about how sad it is that this is what we've come to in this country: we're going bankrupt, the government has just tried to strike the right to a trial by jury out of the constitution, and we're left to celebrate the possibility that maybe we can still have our choice of what light bulb to buy next year.
I find the whole situation deeply depressing and demoralizing.
Because limiting a choice through legislation, of something that violates no one rights, for completely arbitrary reasons and who's stated goals won't actually happen is not just preposterous, it's absolutely evil.

Does that help?
Are you serious?
Damnit, I'm trying to save the planet!
You also just so happen to have invested heavily in GE. But that was just a coincidence, wasn't it?
Are you serious?

Insider trading laws do not apply to people who write laws.
Right on!
CFL should have been outlawed years ago. Football is meant to be played on 100 yard fields, by eleven men a side and for four downs to get ten yards.
Boooo.
From CNN Money (so you know it's legit):
http://money.cnn.com/2011/12/1.....?iid=HP_LN
The National Electrical Manufacturers Association, the trade group whose members produce more than 95% of the light bulbs sold in the United States, supported the new energy efficient standards. It said its members have invested millions since Congress approved the standards in 2007, preparing to comply with the new rules, which remain in effect even if they will not be enforced.
"The industry is concerned that any delay in federal enforcement...will undermine those investments and also create regulatory uncertainty," said Kyle Pitsor, vice president of government affairs for the trade group.
He said it could allow some "bad actors" to import less efficient bulbs from overseas "without any fear of enforcement, thereby creating an uncompetitive disadvantage for U.S. manufacturers that made those investments."
Yup, it's all about the environment. The trade environment, that is.
They do have a point about uncertainty. Repeal it outright already!
Dude is seriously making a LOT of sense.

I heard an amusing story about someone in Germany selling 100 W bulbs as "heat bulbs" to get around the Euro ban on 100 W light bulbs.
"light bulb speak easy coming soon to the Denver metro area."
Thanks for the tip. Now when the feds try shut down my light bulb speak easy all I'll have to worry about is tax evasion.
(In case there are any feds monitoring this site, I'm only kidding about the light buld speak easy thing; nudge nudge, wink wink, say no more)
They called it the "heat ball" and marketed it as a space heater that just happened to fit into a bulb socket. Not surprisingly, regulators shut them down, not having a taste for humor.
Seems silly. This is happening anyways. The market is going to be 50% LED by 2015 and 90% by 2020, according to the lighting industry. It's just a better source of light.
Speaking of energy and nanny states, if the U.S. wasn't spending trillions to ensure the supply of hydrocarbons from the Middle East, energy would be way more expensive and you would see this move to more efficient lighting more quickly. So please, fellow libertarians, stop the romance with wasteful lighting sources.
RIP, incandescents.
LEDs make my head hurt.
Stop staring right into them.
If they could achieve that kind of market share without the government's help, more power to them, but I seriously doubt they could.
Whether you doubt it or not, it doesn't make sense to install incandescent light bulbs. They cost so much to replace and for especially for large businesses, the maintenance and labor costs are simply too high. The energy efficiency is just one aspect.
Wal-Mart is replacing all of its lights both in freezers and overhead and parking lot lighting with LEDs. Starbucks has converted over 8,000 of its stores to LED. You don't realize how much is already LED around around you because you actually can't tell the difference unless you look at the bulb.
How much of this changeover is due to tax deductions and other regulations?
Again, not very much. Walmart is doing this in China and Starbucks all over the U.S.
Also, the U.S. coal industry and everyone else for that matter, is heavily subsidized at the federal and state level, that means that the price of electricity is artificially low.
If you want to pay MORE taxes to subsidize electricity with foreign wars and tax breaks and then burn MORE of it with inefficient lights that need to be replaced constantly by union labor, be my guest.
I for one am glad the industry is moving away from incandescents.
I know this. The new bulbs that we bought that are supposed to last 10 years? Try less than a year. I'm not sure why. And...they aren't that bright!
Bill passed in House vote an hour ago
Expected to pass in Senate over weekend.
Light bulb ban postponement was the only Republican amendment to the Energy funding Bill allowed by Pres Obama's office in last night's discussions.

Here's one reason they haven't been getting the results they expected:

Notice how an incandescent bulb is safer for your eyes because it has virtually no Ultra-Violet light (less than 400nm):
http://www.gelighting.com/na/b.....escent.jpg
Here is the chart of a typical Cool White fluorescent bulb:
http://www.gelighting.com/na/b....._white.jpg
Notice how fluorescent bulbs have significantly more UV rays which is not good for your eyes.
Either wear sunglasses indoors or as you age we will all get cataracts or magical degeneration.
oops, I meant macular degeneration...(rays less than 400nm and even violet light rays are bad for your eyes)
