Norway Has an "Acute Butter Shortage"
And it's so bad, there's even a Russian butter smuggler. Butter makers are blaming it on the weather and people who want to lose weight by eating more butter:
The shortfall has been blamed on a rainy summer that cut into feed production and therefore dairy output, but also the ballooning popularity of a low-carbohydrate, fat-rich diet that has sent demand for butter soaring.
This could ruin Christmas in the land of Santa!
The shortage comes at a time when Norwegians usually eat plenty of buttery traditional biscuits and other homemade Christmas treats made with love and the liberal inclusion of dairy products.
Now this Christmas tradition is in danger.
H/T to Andrew J. Coulson, who poses (and answers) the obvious question over at the Cato@Liberty blog:
Well why don't they just, you know, import more?
That's what Sweden's doing—they've had similar weather and they've got the same diet fad, but their stores (and soon their arteries) are chocked full of butter. But the Norwegians couldn't do that.
Why on earth not?
Norway has a butter monopolist called "Tine" that is deliberately protected from foreign competitors by government-imposed import tariffs.
Well, with all due respect: duh! We've only known the damaging effects of monopolies and protectionism for, like a couple of hundred years.

poop
If poop tasted like butter, you could spread it on yer toast.
Don't the Aussies (Vegemite) and Brits (Marmite and Bovril) already do this?
Yay! Vegemite! It is awesome.
Parkay!
Wouldn't a tariff result in higher prices, lowering demand to a new equilibrium? Shortages should only come from price controls?
That assumes adequate supply and elastic demand. The article indicates that neither of those are the case.
True, but that's irrelevant once the market price rises past the tariff level. If it costs me $10 to make a gallon of butter, and Norway charges a tariff of $5 per gallon...once the price rises past $15 a gallon the tariff is not going to keep foreign competitors out of the market.
A government protected monopoly is a price control.
It's not a legal monopoly, it's just protected by tariffs. It's perfectly legal to buy someone else's butter, just more expensive.
Technically, yes. It's more expensive by design of the application of the tarrif. They are essentially controlling the price of domestic butter.
Without having read the article, given that there is an "acute butter shortage", I have to assume that while it's legal to buy someone else's butter, it must be fantastically difficult, nay, functionally impossible.
For instance, if the protected supplier of iPods runs out, and I can get one down the street in great supply for 15% higher, that's not an "acute shortage".
The tariff priced foreign competitors out of the market. The domestic butter is artificially cheap.
The tariff priced foreign competitors out of the market. The domestic butter is artificially cheap.
No, it works the opposite way.
Tariffs allow domestic producers to price their goods artificially high.
I meant in a relative sense.
tariffs are one of the few CONSTITUTIONAL means by which the federal govt may raise monies. >and as we ALL know, the founders were infallable.
derp de derpity derp derp
Yes, they raise money through tariffs to support the bureaucracy that administers tariffs and hinders the importation and consumption of foreign goods.
I seem to remember a lecture in high school explaining that if a society is short on butter, it is likely due to an overabundance of guns.
Bore butter?
Gang of Four taught at your school?
that theory is damaged goods
Not in Scandinavia. Cross the bridge from Denmark to Sweden and alcohol prices triple. The difficulty of acquiring booze at the Systembolaget (closes at 6, very few locations, shitty selection) makes me feel sorry for those of you here whose states follow that model.
We just dumped our model, but the union thugs have filed a lawsuit, and there's a history in Washington of courts siding against citizen initiatives... so we'll see. We may be right back in that model.
word. fellow WA resident here. granted, if the initiative is invalid due to the reason the union people claim, that is the fault of the drafters
god knows i voted for it. LIQUOR AT COSTCO FTW
High pirces, shitty locations, and shitty hours yes, but poor selection no.
Not that it makes the monopoly a good thing.
The black market in booze thrives and the pols can't figure out why.
It could be worse: alcohol is even more expensive in Finland, and monstrously expensive in Norway. (Both countries have their own alcohol monopolies as well.)
Now they'll be coming to Denmark for something other than booze.
The plan was to lose weight by eating buttery Christmas cookies?
Maybe it works. I don't recall seeing many fat Norwegians. A diet consisting heavily of dried or pickled fish wouldn't exactly encourage overeating...
Or lutefisk? Or is that the Swedes? Also, is there a difference?
Lutefisk is a specific variety. Swedes and Norwegians have many different varieties of nasty preserved fish dishes.
Fish? There's fish on those? Who woulda thunk it?
Gravlax
i make gravlax a lot. made it this week
epic stuff.
i actually like it better than nova lox. you can get pretty creative with it (the basic for me is salt, pepper, brown sugar, dill, and vodka)...
Or lutefisk? Or is that the Swedes? Also, is there a difference?
The biggest difference is that Swedes speak Swedish, and lutefisk does not.
God, those are so good. I don't care if I lose weight. Was dating a girl with Scandinavian roots at Christmastime last year. I've seriously considered calling her up and seeing if she'll make me a batch. Our breakup was amicable.
Christmas eve 1995, I had the sublime pleasure of dining on a complete, traditional Swedish Christmas Julbord. My dinner companions were four beautiful Swedish girls, who stayed in California for the holidays. After dinner, we dropped acid, and went skinny dipping off Venice Beach. Best. Christmas. Ever.
might work for skinny dipping, but not recommended for surfing
guy in pavones costa rica dropped some right before he paddled out
he went over the falls big time and got dragged hard over the bottom
he came in, still tripping, bloody and defeated
"Go get the butter."
What the fuck dude.
Marlon Brando doesn't care about your disgust; not unless you're feeding him fried chicken or something.
I can't watch at work but I'm assuming Last Tango in Paris.
Did anyone else find that movie fantastically overrated?
Why do you hate anal sex, Paul?
Can I get back to you on that?
What about dolphin sex?
Because it makes him bleed?
But seriously, my first thought when I saw that movie was, "Girlfriend needs to trim the verge..."
I was just telling someone today, the story of the time I was having hard and fast sex doggie-style on the floor with a former girlfriend when all of a sudden I popped out and thrust it into her anus, accidentally, of course. She jumped forward about 5 feet and almost put her head through the wall. That was her first anal sex.
OT:
US calls for ban on in-car phone use even with bluetooth.
Because we just can't be trusted to drive while speaking.
Well, I'm sure all those people who were employed to make hands free devices won't have any problems finding new jobs in this economy after they are laid off due to a massive drop in demand.
This is how the government creates jobs.
zero sum game since the lack of injuries in traffic accidents offsets the loss of [JOBZ]...overseas?!
derp de derpity derp
This is what federal bureaucrats actually believe.
How could they possibly enforce this? Pull someone over whose mouth is moving on supicion of using a speaker phone? Really?
phone records after the accident tells the tale
Holy fuck you're even stupider than I realized. Where does it say anything about an accident being required for illegality, moron? It says the use is to be illegal, not use leading to an accident.
I think he means that whenever there was an accident that phone records would be pulled to see if the prosecutor could pile-on an additional charge.
Not terribly well-expressed, but not a bad observation.
(You're welcome, Urine).
FTA: But similar studies linking cellphone use to poor driving have been challenged, most recently by researchers at Wayne State University in Detroit, who concluded last month that some earlier studies were seriously flawed.
When statists see an opportunity to control another part of proles' lives, they aren't going to worry about little things like whether or not studies are valid.
When statists conduct a study on something, it is not to answer a question.
It is to prove a forgone conclusion.

The NTSB called for this ban.
Unless there's been a coup I'm unaware of, the NTSB doesn't represent the entire country.
Although they think they do.
I can already hear congressmen saying there is a need for legislative action since the board of safety says it is a good idea.
I'd like to propose a permanent ban on the NTSB.

'Brokeback Iceberg' penguin finds female mate
One of the 'gay' male penguins from Toronto's infamous "Brokeback iceberg" couple, has found a female mate.
Toronto's zoo separated a pair of male penguins, Buddy and Pedro, last month to boost numbers of the endangered birds. The birds' unlikely affection for each other drew headlines around the world with cries of "Brokeback iceberg".
The Canadian zoo said on Monday that following the forced separation, one of the penguins, Buddy, had mated with a female. Pedro has yet to get lucky, but officials say it's not for a lack of trying.
The birds' separation was necessary because penguins are an endangered species and the two needed to mate with females, zoo officials said.
Curator Tom Mason describes their bond as social - not sexual - and says when the birds rejoin the general population, they are likely to stay with their female matches.
The story of the pair, who came to be known as Toronto's "gay penguins," went viral online, leading to cheeky YouTube videos.

Maybe they're just bi.
pitch or catch doesnt matter; ur in the game
Eating butter is a fad diet I can happily follow. Animal fat FTW.
Just spoon on that lard- real lard, not that shelf stable stuff.
Well, this is as good a place as any to insert this comment...
I was going to say that because Norskies have switched from butter on lutefisk to bacon fat, Christmas is saved.
Haha....Butter Smuggler...Haha.
Definition contest? What is the urban dictionary definition of "Butter Smuggler"? GO!
I thought that butter smugglers were big lumpy, lopsided, floppy tits that look like they're full of half churned butter instead of milk.
Like you don't know, Trebek.
They could just use margarine.
In cookies!? You should be arrested, tried, convicted and put to death.
It's not nice to fuck with Mother Nature.

Its not "butter smuggling"
its 'lipidlegging'
Worth noting that butter doesn't clog arteries. Sugar is one of the prime drivers of dangerous cholesterol, specifically triglycerides. Triglycerides are directly related to carbohydrate consumption.
I've been low-carb for years and my cholesterol is ridiculously improved.
while this is true, most of the butter you are likely to get is craptastic
because the cows aren't grass fed
grass fed cows give milk that is way better for butter. it has a much better EFA profile, tastes better, and looks a bit funny colored if you are used to store bought butter

The "weather" is the last resort of a scoundrel.
"Butter Smuggler"? Is that like a "Bone Smuggler"?
I'm an American, married to a Norwegian, living in Trondheim, Norway- last week I traveled two hours across the Swedish border just to buy butter. The article mostly hits the nail on the head as for why there is a butter shortage- protectionist tariffs. HOWEVER, they miss another key reason- which is that there are strict regulations on the dairy market imposed by the government. Each dairy farm has a quota which they cannot exceed which results in farms dumping milk to avoid hefty fines. The government is pointing fingers at Tine saying that they should have "let them know" the quota needed to be raised without considering that maybe there shouldn't be a quota at all. And of course, Norwegians aren't at all questioning the role government played in this whole situation. It ain't easy being a libertarian in the Socialist utopia of Norway. 🙁
But at least you have good wood.

Scandinavia sucks.
i thought finland was santa's home.
I was under the impression that Reason did not have a problem with monopolies.
Monopolies created and enforced by the state? Do you having a reading comprehension problem?
?Norway has a butter monopolist called "Tine" that is deliberately protected from foreign competitors by government-imposed import tariffs.?
This information is incomplete. Tine is actually the diary monopolist in Norway - anything from milk to cheese cannot be sold by anyone else except Tine.
