The Occupy Movement's Penchant for Inflicting Collateral Damage Isn't Winning it Any Friends
In 1863 poor New Yorkers rioted over the use of conscription to fill Union ranks and a loophole that allowed rich people to pay $300 to avoid military slavery. For editorializing in favor of President Lincoln and the draft, the offices of Horace Greely's New York Tribune were all but destroyed by rioters, until the Tribune staff gunned up with muskets. The rioters also hoped to bring down The New York Times, another pro-draft paper, but according to C.J. Chivers' nonfiction book The Gun, the mob was deterred from its course by the sight of editor Henry Jarvis Raymond seated securely behind a newly minted Gatling, which at the time cost roughly $1,000, and fired ammunition that was half as expensive. Raymond apocryphally instructed others in the NYT building to "Give them the grape, and plenty of it." As a result, not a window at the Time was destroyed. But poor unarmed blacks, who white New Yorkers saw both as competition for jobs and the catalyst for their own enslavement to the military, were beaten and hanged, despite having no more say in the matter of conscription than they did in being used as chattel.
If there is a filament connecting the conscription riots of 1863 and the Occupy Wall Street movement of today, it is the tendency of the mob to abuse their fellow 99 percenters for the sins of their government and its corporate beneficiaries.
Last night, San Diego residents held a fundraiser for two street vendors whose carts were burglarized and vandalized, with blood and piss, by Occupy protesters. The protesters were angry that the vendors would not "donate" their wares to the movement. CBS Los Angeles reports that the vendors, one who sold hot dogs, and one who sold coffee, also received death threats for refusing to give away their goods.
At the Port of Oakland earlier this month, workers and observers could only enter—and more horrifying, leave—the port after the mob "voted" their permission. When one trucker tried to break through the blockade, his vehicle was attacked. The protester who did the attacking had this to say: "These people tried to kill us. I can't believe they are being that aggressive over a paycheck, over your own people fighting for you." (Savor the irony.) While people waited into the early morning hours for permission to see their families and do their jobs, Oakland Mayor Jean Quan, who gave the OK for Oakland Police to fire tear gas and rubber bullets into a crowd of Occupy Protesters, sat safely in a government building.
Even if we are to assume that the bulk of these crimes have been committed by members of Black Blocs—groups of anarchic nihilists who cover their faces in order to wreak meaningless havoc, yet are not really on board with the wider aims (whatever they may be) of the Occupy movement—and other minorities of the movement, there's still no good explanation for why Occupy protesters on the whole are causing more harm to their local economies than they are to their government.
Show me an Occupy demand that can be met by destroying the livelihoods of people who are on the cusp of poverty (due to government regulations on food vendors), smashing the windows of a Men's Warehouse and a coffee shop, trashing the bathroom of a Manhattan restaurant, pushing an old lady down a flight of D.C. stairs after imprisoning her and her fellow conservative conference attendees using a human chain, or "clobber[ing] a store manager with a credit-card reader." You can't. That's because the government holds the strings here, not the people who Occupy is hurting. The government gives away corporate welfare, controls cops, sends perverse signals to the market, drops bombs, exposes itself to regulatory capture, deals out special favors to big interests, operates drones, prohibits drugs, and destroys immigrant families through deportation. Hot dog vendors sell hot dogs, restaurants sell food, store managers manage stores, truck drivers drive trucks.
While disrupting local businesses is significantly easier than disrupting local and national government (Hot dog vendors don't pack heat, the government—and sometimes, the NYT—does), screwing over the rest of the 99 percent simply because it's easier isn't going to accomplish Occupy's goals, unless of course triggering schadenfreude and alienating possible allies are agenda items on one of the dozen-or-so lists of demands floating around the web.

All #OWS is asking is to be judged by the same standards of the government: Whether their intentions are good.
Their explicit intentions are to destroy capitalism. They're merely starting with the petit bourgoise. Give them a few hangings and guillotines under their belt, and they'll get around to nationalizing the bigger businesses.
But MNG said this is all just made up.

Clearly they are in cahoots with the cops to justify a beatdown.
whose carts were burglarized and vandalized, with blood and piss
"NO BLOOD FOR WEINERS!!!"
I hope they fundraised enough for new carts. No amount of scrubbing with acid would be enough. Its hippie piss, and who knows what kind of shit is in that blood.
In Boston, they are demanding that homeless shelters offer them everything given to the homeless (free showers, shelter, food, electricity, etc.). This is taking scarce resources from the destitute, and the "protesters" claim they have a right to take that support from them.
They are literally stealing from the destitute. I loathe those assholes.
They are literally stealing from the destitute.
And yet the Progressitards have the cheek to say that we hate the homeless. Well, I may not be fond of them, but at least I don't walk into their shelters demanding that they give me the free shit they're receiving.
I mean, does any act so perfectly embody the Milennials' attitude that they're not only entitled to things they didn't earn, but they can take anything they want with no consequences?
don't blame the entire generation for this, there's idiots at every age level. Plenty of us have enough self-respect to work hard and not whine about not having a $40000/yr job straight out of university.
I'll bet if one looked deep enough, one would find the cart owners were named Koch.
Soros....
Apparently what happened is that the vendors gave away some stuff to them for free at first, and when the vendors decided to stop, the OWSers commenced with the chimpout.
Between this and the goon banging the water bottle on the floor of the Panera Bread franchise near Zuccotti, it appears that these cretins are regressing back to Neanderthal days.
Eventually, they'll be asking if they are free to gambol, but it will just come out as a bunch of grunts and hoots.
Eventually, they'll be asking if they are free to gambol, but it will just come out as a bunch of grunts and hoots.
And it will still be more coherent than anything White Indian ever said.
The NYT used to be so much cooler.
They'd shit kittens over a Gatling gun these days, despite them being perfectly legal.
They're only legal because Congress doesn't realize they are, and hasn't seen one in a while.
But, boy, I wish I had a Gatling gun. I'd show them. I'd show everybody.
That would be so cool.
Just to see the looks on their faces would be worth it. I wonder if the Sons of Guns guys would build me one if I waved enough cash at them.
Plenty of people will build you one, but they are pricey. Like 25-30K pricey. I figure for that much, I can buy a full auto M16.
You can get a crank for your AR or 10/22 pretty cheaply.
Just make sure it stays hand-operated. Hooking it up to a cordless drill will land you in prison.
You can get a crank for your AR or 10/22 pretty cheaply.
Only if the girl's pimp approves it beforehand, however.
You can get 2 M16s for that much.
Thankfully we're civilized now and shit like this doesn't fly anymore.

That is a paper I would read - not the shit-rag they publish now.
"Duck, you suckers!"
Just drunk homeless. Nothing but drunk homeless.
most of the probs yep

despite having no more say on the matter of transcription than they did in being used as chattle.
I assume you meant conscription? Unless you were referring to the NYT transcribing bullets into the rioters.
[Slaps head]. Thanks.
but the whole thing about Occupy is that they are trying to get everyone else "in" to the movement, that's why they call themselves the 99%. Awfully assumptive of them, because they don't speak for a lot of people.
Also, spreading the message of their movement is much more important than the needs of regular people's everyday lives, eg., to go to work, to earn their living, and be able to do it without interference (aside from the gov't interfering as usual).
and they have surrounded themselves with similar voices, so they fail to see how out of touch they are.
Is there something I can sign to opt out?
ahem, no. Of course not, comrade.
Screw that. Lock me up with the bourgeoisie, whose morals I share!
Apparently, Occupy Oakland doesn't want to get everyone else in. Read their flier. That's the flier from the organizers, by-the-way, not some fringe element. Racial and ethnic grievance mongering is part of their program. As is anti-capitalism, generalized wealth redistribution, promoting distrust and hostility towards the police and, of course, excusing violence and criminality.
From the flier (bold highlights from the original):
Hot dog vendors don't pack heat
Not in San Diego, anyway. Yet.
"Even if we are to assume that the bulk of these crimes have been committed by members of Black Blocs?groups of anarchic nihilists"
Nihilists they might be, anarchic they are not.
Alan Moore said it best in his novel V for Vendetta
"Eve Hammond:
All this riot and uproar, V?is this anarchy? Is this the Land of Do-As-You-Please?
V:
No. This is only the Land of Take-What-You-Want. Anarchy means "without leaders"; not "without order." With anarchy comes an age of ordnung, of true order, which is to say voluntary order. This age of ordnung will begin when the mad and incoherent cycle of verwirrung that these bulletins reveal has run its course. This is not anarchy, Eve. This is chaos."
At some point the little fuckers are going to make the mistake of showing up somewhere outside of a big city full of scared white people. If there was ever a group of people who need their asses kicked on a daily basis, it is those clowns.
In case you misinterpreted the meaning the term "Black Blocs" has nothing to do with race in this context. It refers to people who have no idea what anarchism is or means but nonetheless call themselves anarchists. These people use the name of a philosophy they do not understand as an excuse for violence. But I do agree that need their asses kicked ? they need to be punished for initiating violence against others.
I don't think they are black people. I think they are a bunch of little shithead rich white kids. They thrive in center cities where the hipsters who live there are either too afraid to do anything about it or excuse their conduct. I would love to see them go out to some place like Wichita and start tearing shit up.
I agree, it would be fun to see them get some of what is definitely coming to them. It is annoying when people commit acts of violence in the name of a philosophy they have no clue about.
isn't Wichita the lair of David Koch?
Yes. they own the half of the city that Cesna doesn't own. Yet, oddly the occutards haven't shown up.
LOL, really. It reminds me of that scene in Casablanca when Bogart told that German colonel that "there are parts of New York that I'd advise you to stay out of" (or words to that effect).
For all of their supposed egalitarianism and identification with the poor and working classes, the OWS folks so far seem to understand your point: there are some neighborhoods where their nonsense just won't be tolerated. But as you say, the OWS wankers will get too big for their britches eventually.
I love that line.
I live in the ghetto. If they came here, they would be robbed and beaten.
I would love to see them go down and occupy Anacostia. Good luck with that. Just go up to a convience store and demand that they give you shit. Comic would be too weak a word for it.
Occupy East St. Louis.
The thought almost makes me feel sorry for them.
No. At some point they are going to make the mistake of trashing some stores in somewhere like Texas and bunch are going to get ventilated.
I wish I could remember the name of the Dallas area politician who made a campaign commercial by talking to some attendees at Occupy Dallas. The best line,
"Have you considered occupying a cubicle?"
Do not doubt for one second that, somewhere someone who is pulling strings to make these events happen, deeply wishes your prediction comes true.
Movements need martyrs, preferably from the ranks of cannon fodder.
That is why they have targeted the urban areas they do. When you are up to your earlobes in student debt (due to your poor life choice of a degree in "Dance interpretation of Progressive Political Literature") you may have acquired just enough intellegence to know you won't be appreciated in a blue collar town.
It's only a matter of time before the cowboy poets start rioting.
... and eating pudding.
Hear, hear. Some conservatives keep calling the thugs "anarchists". "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."
The common usage seems to be that "anarchist" means someone going against the present authority even if their goal is a government with more expansive powers. I agree with you that it does not make any sense, but there it is.
"Nihilists! Say what you like about National Socialism, at least it's an ETHOS!"
unless of course triggering schadenfreude and alienating possible allies
I am already there, and was after the first week.
Why is that black man trying to protect that baby from the caning it has coming to it.
Ron Paul called Elizabeth Warren a socialist. Shit storm to follow.
That is what she is.
As Is Meat.
You say that as if "socialist" were a bad thing.
Yeah, I don't think she's gonna take that as an insult.
nobody can become a socialist on their own
It takes a village idiot.
It takes a village full of idiots.
It takes a village.
Preferably, one with manned guard towers. And barbed wire fencing.
It Takes Some Pillage.
then burning. Remember the burning is always done last.
That's the sequel. Followed by It Takes Some Rape
Actually rape is the prequel. Rape is first as don't want the good fast ones to get away, then you pillage the inanimate object and finally burn. Proper order in these things is everything.
"I'm in love with Attila the Hun,
Attila the Hun, Attila the Hun.
We'll pillage
A village,
And rape everyone,
I'm in love with Attila the Hun!"
Man, they don't make sitcoms like that anymore.
I can never remember the order.
Burn last, that's key.
That makes sense.
We got rape down to a science!
Flirting will get him nowhere.
Once again, the good doctor demonstrates his keen grasp of the obvious.

And the legacy media coverup continues.
Seriously, whenever I run across a story in the usual outlets on Occutardism, it ranges mostly between bemused and vaguely supportive, with perhaps a token chuckle at the hygienically challenged.
There is no mention (zip, zero, nada) of vandalism, theft, rape, assault, petty authoritarianism, and general lawbreaking. Even the clashes with police are carefully framed to hint at blame for the cops. Which itself is an extraordinary departure for a media which is close to blindly worshipful of Our Boys in Blue.
Occutardism is nice. I've been using Stupefy.
What are "the usual outlets"? ABC News? Huffington Post?
Hey, I just spoke with an attorney in Chicago. She said it was warm enough for it to be raining. I guess it beats ice.
Even the weather in Chicago has lawyers.
The weather in Chicago right now is exhilarating. We'll have for someone who can see the Lake right now to tell us how that looks.
Without him, I'd have no idea of what condition Lake Michigan is in.
The river looks all right.
Still green, I hope?
Too dark to tell.
Well, check in the morning and let me know. Maybe we could send you some green algae. Florida has extra.
Still too dark to tell. Our skies go gunmetal grey from now until Spring (with the occasional blindingly bright post-snowfall day). Now this may have to wait until spring, by which time they will have dyed the river again anyway. You need to ask me in September, maybe October.
Oh, I'm sure there are exceptions. But in a decent world, the ongoing vortex of Occutard criminality would be THE story, not an occasional aside by boomer and boomer wannabes desperately trying to relive/recreate Woodstock, only without the music.
Woodstock was also on private property.
or
What the hell? Do you ever mean anything you say?
It's been largely left to local news to cover the criminality of OWS mobs. The national news is pretty much ignoring it.
But if there was so much as harsh language a Tea Party event, it would lede on MSNBC, followed by a series of hand-wringing editorials from unarmed asshats at the NYT.
Show me an Occupy demand that can be met by destroying the livelihoods of people who are on the cusp of poverty (due to government regulations on food vendors), smashing the windows of a Men's Warehouse and a coffee shop, trashing the bathroom of a Manhattan restaurant, pushing an old lady down a flight of D.C. stairs after imprisoning her and her fellow conservative conference attendees using a human chain, or "clobber[ing] a store manager with a credit-card reader." Damn, Riggs. That's one of the best paragraphs I've ever read here. Bravo!
It was pretty good. The list of government evils could be a little longer though.
that's a mighty long list, mister.
"That's what she said!"
With anarchy comes an age of ordnung, of true order, which is to say voluntary order. This age of ordnung will begin when the mad and incoherent cycle of verwirrung that these bulletins reveal has run its course. This is not anarchy, Eve. This is chaos.
...Seriously?
I've never read/stared at V for Vendetta, or really anything of Moore's, because he looks stinky and talks like a was-a-hippie-until-last-weekend Wilson/Crowley/LaVey-book-carrying fourteen-year-old cunt.
Does he know that V is Hitler?
Is he amused?
Because what he's done is very funny, if he did it.
Anybody who thinks V is Hitler is a fool of the highest order. V sought to eliminate government, not to tame it to preserve racial purity as hitler did.
In fact, Supreme Leader Susan's political movement has lots of elements that are consciously modeled on the Nazis (not just the racially motivated party he leads but the dichotomy between public and private attitudes towards homosexuality, the conflation of the state with society with a single person, the fretting about the proles making poor moral choices etc).
Hitler was an anarchist? News to me.
No. He was a socialist.
Letting people buy their way out of the draft was surely a sin of government, but conscription itself was not. You can't be against conscription in 1863 without being objectively pro Confederacy.
I think the Confederacy starting drafting men first.
1862
Context. New Yorkers weren't rioting to protest to any conscription except conscription in the Union army. You couldn't be against that conscription in 1863 without being objectively pro-Confederacy.
So you can't be against slavery without being objectively pro slavery.
The differences between slavery and conscription are so numerous and of such significance that it's hard not to read your comment as an apology for slavery.
Yeah, slaves didn't get blown apart by artillery or have limbs sawed off in field hospitals.
If a country can't save itself through the volunteer service of its own free people, then I say : Let the damned thing go down the drain!-Robert Heinlein.
To your first point, sure they did and worse.
To your second point, that's not a rebuttal of my argument.
Was going to say something similar but apparently Robert Heinlein beat me to it.
Allow me to spell out the implications of what you appear to be agreeing to.
There is an alternative reading of the 1863 riots which is that rather than a being a protest for a just cause that unreasonably and unpredictably became a racist pogrom late in the day, in fact the riots were always animated by racial animus and determined to harm blacks. The rioters not only passively supported the cause of the Confederacy, they actively promoted the cause of oppressing blacks and they supported violence against black people and their white friends in New York City. Racist agitators called the civil war the "nigger war" in newspapers and for the mobs that's exactly what it was all about. The attack on the Colored Orphan Asylum was particularly telling. It's also notable that the July riots were preceded in the spring of 1863 by race riots, suggesting that the issue of the draft was a minor grievance compared to a pervasive hatred and resentment of blacks.
In some instances during the July riots, the mob loudly cheered on Jefferson Davis and the Confederacy while they tortured and murdered black citizens--this despite the fact that the Confederacy also drafted soldiers to fight. Therefore, the argument that the riots of July of 1863 were ever primarily about the issue of the justice of conscription is dubious. It makes much more sense to see them as a continuation and escalation of racist violence, and as intrinsically rather than accidentally supportive of the Confederacy.
With that in mind, the argument that the rioters were protesting a sin of government is rather ironic.
a newly minted Gatling, which at the time cost roughly $1,000, and fired ammunition that was half as expensive.
QUE?
It was super expensive, is what I'm saying. The New York Times was one of the few non-governmental bodies to own a Gatling in 1863.
It refers to people who have no idea what anarchism is or means but nonetheless call themselves anarchists.
The sort of "anarchists" who riot over cuts in the dole.
There is no evidence Occupy San Diego did those things. In fact, they attended the fundraiser last night and donated generously to help the two vendors.
http://t.co/pOEuxXFQ
the vendors, one who sold hot dogs, and one who sold coffee, also received death threats for refusing to give away their goods.
So the vendors are lying about the death threats, then?
Because...?
So, if Occutard SD didn't vandalize the carts, who did? And why would the vendors lie about it?
o2 tells us it's the drunk homeless, though in the case of SD I'd believe it. Under normal circumstances, there seem to be 10x the homeless in San Diego than lower Manhattan, for obvious reasons.
o2 tells us
I'd assign a greater probability of accuracy to secret telepathic messages from my cat.
"For... God's... sake... please... make... him... stop... dressing... me... up... like... Sailor Moon... and... masturbating."
Yeah they had just been operating there for years with no problems and just happened to have this happen to them when the occutards showed up. Just a coincidence I guess.
"Hot dog vendors are the 1%, mannnnnnnnnnnnnnn!"
There is no evidence Occupy San Diego did those things.
Bums did it.
San Diego is like the Bum Riviera.
Saying "Bums did it" does not exactly refute the assertion that Occutard SD did it.
Unless you want to argue those two categories are mutually exclusive.
They busted up the Men's Warehouse? Isn't the Men's Warehouse "I guarantee it" guy a pot smoking hippie?
If I was a street vendor, a shopkeeper, or a truck driver in the vicinity of these cunts, I would have a big fucking shotgun in plain view on my person at all times.
The Men's Warehouse dude is a big Democratic donor. Who the fuck did he bother? Is selling cheap suits oppressing the 99%?
The Men's Warehouse dude is a big Democratic donor.
"Schadenfreude: German, n. ..."
By pushing the Suit, which is the a symbol of, and represents the trappings of, the System and the Man, Men's Warehouse was terminated with extreme prejudice. The Suit is counterrevolutionary and exceptionally unmutual.
Not in California you wouldn't.
The hell I wouldn't. Not that I would be in California for any reason. Fuck that state.
"The government gives away corporate welfare, controls cops, sends perverse signals to the market, drops bombs, exposes itself to regulatory capture, deals out special favors to big interests, operates drones, prohibits drugs, and destroys immigrant families through deportation. Mike Riggs,
Congratulations on your best post ever!
Bravo.
agree with everything except the (as usual) conflation...
"immigrant families"
y'mean ILLEGAL immigrant families, generally speaking
The part about the Gatling Gun was delicious. Let's hope someone opens fire on the protesters and starts a major riot.
Nice that the newpaper recognized the value of the Gatling Gun. The Union Army didn't use it to shorten the war
(gun invented in 1861 and demo'd to
the War Dept.) because it burnt up ammo too quickly. One wonders the outcome of Gettysburg had a hundred Gatlings been lined up on Cemetery Ridge.
The Union would have won?
You mock, but logistics at the time were barely up to supplying the armies in the field. Most of the time they had hardtack and beans, and a blanket per man. The rest of the time they "foraged" what they needed from the countryside.
Supporting a machine gun army with basic railroads and horse drawn wagons would have been a monumental task.
Perhaps, but on defense your lines of supply would be shorter. It might have persuaded the Confederates to stay on defense-as opposed to the Northern offensive that ended at Gettysburg-and bled the Union dry by 1864 (not that Southern industry was up to manufacturing that much ordnance or that Richmond had any more sense about how to smartly fight the war than Washington).
Gatlings would have been of little benefit in most major civil war engagements.
As noted, they consumed tremendous amounts of ammo, were also very unwieldy to move or operate, and quite limited in effective range.
Pickett's charge is a good example - having one at the angle would have been real handy, but just how would you know that is where it needed to be? Because there is no way you could have moved one there in time to be of use by the time you realized that is where it you needed it.
Putting them anyplace else on the battlefield just makes them a target for direct fire artillery. Parrot gun beats gattling every time.
Did anyone see this? Hilarious.
McDonald's Job Applications Dumped On 'Occupy' Protesters By Chicago Board Of Trade
That's not funny, this is funny.
Awesome.
Or, if you prefer the message in an image ...
"I gassed him. I hit him full in the face with a looooong blast of pepper spray. I mean, I leaned out the window and followed him all the way to the ground with it."
Oh, dear. I think my panties just fell off.
Occupy Vancouver protesters face arrest if they stay.
City is getting a court injunction at 1400, so things could kick off any time this afternoon.
The comments at the CBC have really turned against the Occupiers lately.
Also weren't some officers bitten?
Yes, yes they were.
Did the bitten officers turn into protestors?
there are few assaults on an officer that are going to get a worse reaction than biting. cops tend to be not particularly excited about communicable diseases, considering the kind of street people we regularly deal with.
i'd WAY rather get punched or kicked, than bitten
One way you can tell that this is making the left nervous: Gawker is spending an awful lot of its coverage now putting out fires regarding the rapes and assaults while trying to discredit the NY Post, whose coverage has been the most negative.
And Skyrim comes out Thursday at midnight (or Friday 12:00 AM if you want to be a pedantic dick about it).
Can't fucking wait!!!
Release date delivery from Amazon baby
Yep, waiting not-so-patiently!
there will be more than a few cops working nightshift doing a "business check" at best buy, etc. i can guarantee you that
I'm sure the California State Legislature are feeling quite pleased with themselves for getting that open carry ban in place just in the nick of time.
Why am I not surprised at all that the NYT supported conscription.
The NYT was all Americorps before it was cool.
Your best work yet, Riggs.
See? Capitalism works!
*OWS hand wave*
Isn't that a bit like saying Steve Jobs sells phones?
Sorry, too soon?
Actually, there's nothing here I disagree with, other than saying that these counterproductive actions are representative of the movement as a whole. Even that, I will leave as an open question. Having worked as a street vendor before, I can say that the profit margin is very slim. However I question the sincerity of Reason's readership's sudden sympathy for "the little guy," it appears when convenient to a particular argument, and disappears just as quickly at the suggestion that maybe demanding 80 hour work weeks from people just because you can is a little scummy.
Having read their list of demands and the intimations of violence in articles written by their supporters (e.g., "you pay taxes so that the poor don't rise up and murder you"), "give us free shit or we'll hurt you" seems pretty representative of their mindset.
However I question the sincerity of Reason's readership's sudden sympathy for "the little guy,"
Well, then fuck you. This bunch is always on the side of the little guy, because compared to the Behemoth State, everyone is a little guy.
I would politely ask you to find any article, anywhere, from anytime, demanding that people work 80 hour weeks "just because we can".
People should be free to work as little or as much as they like.
The only caveat is that they can't bitch if they don't choose to work enough to support the lifestyle that they would like.
Actually, Reason regularly covers issues concerning the difficulties experienced by small vendors, since the natural predator of the small vendor is the urban government.
This place is food truck central.
Reason tends to go to bat for just about everybody who wants to sell food in one way or another, actually.
But thanks for playing the Reason drinking game!
I'll back up this statement. Reason's totally got a food truck fetish. Pretty much every week there's a story about street vendors or kids lemonade stands getting hassled by the local city councils. It's a perennial topic.
However I question the sincerity of Reason's readership's sudden sympathy for "the little guy,"
Sudden? Sudden? You come around here five minutes ago and throw the word "sudden" out there? dude, spend 10 minutes browsing the archives of Reason's fucking sterling defense of the little guy against the ZILLION POUND HAMMER of government. Please.
Come again?
Reason has supported deregulation of food trucks and street-side vendors for some time now.
If you mean that the government should forbid employers from asking their employees to work 80 hour weeks, why?
Sniped by 50 minutes. Still...
Why were you in prison in Colorado? Were you street vending drugs? Why do you support "The Occupation"?
"ANGRY DOWN TWINKLES!!!"
Marc Jacobs designed for Marc Jacobs Handbag coveted clear structure, but also the essence of one of the many brand-name bags. But be concerned about is that he's subsidiary brand Marc by Marc Jacobs. The younger you must not miss Marc by Marc Jacobs Bags. Especially the Marc by Marc Jacobs Handbag, fashion sun for you. Believe me, it really really good.
You've been into the vanilla extract again, haven't you?
Mr. Riggs,
I have used the incident mentioned in this paragraph of your article in discussion and I was wondering if you could more fully support the statement on the mob 'voted' to let folks go home?
Thank you for your time.
At the Port of Oakland earlier this month, workers and observers could only enter?and more horrifying, leave?the port after the mob "voted" their permission.
Give them the grape, and plenty of it.
Paging Will Wilkinson... Will Wilkinson... Wilkinson
your lovely OWS protestors, LIBTARD !
Regarding Men's Wearhouse, they (not their employees per se) pretty much got what they deserved from a karmic perspective anyway.
The day before Men's Wearhouse posted a good-sized sign in their window advertising how they 'stood with the 99%'.
It may have been a slimy attempt at mollifying the belligerents, but given MWs leftist political escapades in the past I doubt it.
Says much about both Men's Wearhouse and OWS...
And BTW, I'm no longer a customer of Men's Wearhouse. You have my word on it.
It's clear that the OWS is out of control and thoroughly "deregulated." The random makeshift societies, tents segregated by sexual orientation and gender, the rise of enforcers and "conflict resolution" people who aren't certified by proper government agencies, penchant for public defecation and hatred of eviction notices - they all scream "laissez faire!" "laissez faire!"
But wait, it's almost as if.... it was the government that actually helped corrupt them by allowing thousands of their rank to occupy public spaces while disregarding public safety. They encouraged them to stay FOREVER with artificially lax eviction notices. They often insisted that "everybody should practice free speech at the park, because its THE American dream". Regarding the protest that hit the street, Mayor Maxine Waters of Oakland assured us that "there's nothing wrong with the housing market, it is just fine."
Oops, I mixed up two totally different things.
