Herman Cain Sings A Hymn at The National Press Club
Today's scene from the ongoing Christopher Buckley novel that is Herman Cain's presidential nomination campaign, via Business Insider. (Be sure to note the perfect slow zoom out by the C-SPAN cameraman):
Cain was speaking at the National Press Club to address Politico's report (noted in today's Morning Links) that two women complained about "sexually suggestive" behavior by Cain while he was the head of the National Restaurant Association. Cain admits the charges were made, but claims he was "falsely accused."*
Read Reason's candidate match profile of Cain here. More from Reason on Herman Cain here and here.
*No scare quotes intended; the quotes are there because "falsely accused" is the phrase Cain used. Full quote as reported by Politico: "While at the restaurant association, I was accused of sexual harassment. Falsely accused, I might add. I was falsely accused of sexual harassment, and when the charges were brought, as the leader of the organization, I recused myself and allowed my general counsel and human resource officer to handle it."

Doesn't this phrasing pretty much insinuate that he's lying?
I was just about to comment on the scare quotes myself.
Every other politician here at Reason gets the benefit of the doubt, but nooooooo, not Cain.
No square quotes intended. Those are actual quotes, and if I use the same language as someone else to relay what they've said, it goes in quotes.
Quote comes from this story: http://www.politico.com/news/s.....67233.html
square quotes
You're not hip enough to paraphrase?
It's hip to be square.
In Suderman's defense, Cain is pretty L7.
Didn't Rick James bust out of L7?
fuckin' A!

Cocaine is a helluva drug!
Cult deprogrammer: "My greatest achievement was getting Paul McCartney out of Wings."
Homer: "You idiot! He was the most talented one!"
Paul McCartney was in a band called Wings?
I was referring to the word "claims", not the "falsely accused" part. In my head, I always reads that as something like "claims despite the evidence" or "wants you to believe".
In my experience, what people claim to be true often turns out to, in fact, be true. Sometime a claim is just a claim and a quote is just a quote.
I didn't read into it the same way you did at all. It reads like Cain said the accusation is false.
Quote comes from this story:
You should of simply linked to a history of the use of quotes in reporting for the past 200 years.
Jesus fucking Christ guys Sudderman is a journalist and this is how journalists quote someone and this is how newspapers and journals have been quoting people since the beginning of fucking time.
Time to check your paranoia.

Caincel.
This country has never had a completely insane black president. It's time we overcome our racist, saneist past and right this historical wrong.
If you're going to go down in flames, go down in a fiery inferno, no screwing around. Make it Michael Bay-worthy.
This country has never had an completely insane completely black president.
FTFY.
No, I think that sanity and being wrong and clueless are two different issues.
Herman Cain's 'scandal' reminds me of the Weiner story; It is still none of our business
Well Cain is not claiming that this is the "tip of Al Qaeda,s sword" while our country is spending trillions of dollars, limiting individual liberty and wasting 1000s of lives adventuring around the globe for the sake of a morphing ill defined endless war on "terror".
So there is that bit of difference.
I'm not a fan of Wieners, he threw a few women under the bus to attempt to salvage his career but what he did in his personal life is his business; as well as Cain
slight difference - Weiner actually was doing stupid things while in office, on the public dime; Cain is accused of having done something of a nebulous nature when in private business.
Politics aside, I am voicing my opinion on the politics of destruction based on one's personal behavior

I would vote for any person that would sing "Pearl Harbor Sucked (And I Really Miss You)".
FUCK YEAH!
If you don't throw in your buck 'o five, who will?
I am completely serious when I say that that should be the national anthem instead of the weird, rambling run-on sentence that we now call a national anthem. Give me something I can get excited about!
Nah, not for a President to sing. But I think it could replace the Star Spangled Banner at a Mav's game.
As long as it's set to the tune of Londonderry Air.
Would love for him to bust out with Irresponsible Hate Anthem. I think it would be higly appropo of the treatment he is getting recently.
If that was Amazing Grace, then I've never heard the song before.
As far as scandals go, this should be pretty simple for an experienced politician to weather, except Cain seems like a really tactless person that could make it worse for himself.
I'm reminded of a scene from Blazing Saddles.
Where all da white women at?
His large member scares me.
And yours scares me.
It's twue! It's twue!
I love how he says that, if there were settlements, he didn't know anything about them.
He was the head of the organization and didn't know his underlings were making settlements on his behalf?
Are you fucking kidding me?
We're all at the mercy of our HR departments.
I work in employment law, and it's not unusual. The subject employee is not always notified or given the opportunity to approve/deny a settlement. For one thing, it might be in the organization's best economic interest to pay nusiance money to end the case and move on, while the subject may have a personal vendetta that costs more. Consequently, they often try not to invovle subjects in settlement negotiations where it is avoidable.
He stated that he recused himself from the investigation.
He just told Greta von Susteren that he did know about the settlements, so we don't have to debate how he could not know about them any more.
Of course he would know, after the fact.
I'm not defending Cain, having no idea what he did or didn't do, but an accusation by an employee alone isn't proof of anything. It may be that there's evidence to back up him sexually harassing employees--stay tuned.
I think the sequence of non-denial denials here doesn't really speak well of Cain.
I don't like that his first attempt was to attack Politico and claim that this is a smear campaign launched by the evil media.
Since apparently the story as reported by Politico is true, that's really weak Anthony Weiner level shit from Cain.
I think it depends how it happened. If it were a corporate matter handled by HR and Legal, they may have done the entire investigation and managed the settlement without consulting with him.
He very well may have done something to generate the claim, but a considerable number of employment harassment/discrimination claims are nonsense.
Non-denial denials? I've heard him state emphatically and specifically that yes, he was "accused" of harrassment when working with the restaurant association, but that he did not harrass anyone. He expressly denied he ever engaged in any sexually harrassing activity, and pointed out that the accusations were investigate and found to be baseless.
It certainly seems to me that someone didn't like the fact that Cain has been gaining some momentum and has been doing pretty well.
It seems that the powers that be really want Romney to be the nominee. Can't stand to see Cain doing so well, so let's see what dirt we can dredge up.
The first day he sent out his chief of staff to give us some nonsense about how the "liberal media" had launched a "smear campaign".
In this case, Politico reported that Cain had been the subject of sexual harassment allegations. That piece of reporting is 100% true and now admitted by Cain. So where is the smear campaign?
The smear campaign is pretty obvious - dredging up a bare allegation that upon investigation turned out to be baseless. Anyone can "accuse" anyone of anything. He has admitted that he was ACCUSED of some kind of sexual harrassment. But he also expressly denied that he actually did anything. There was no lawsuit and evidently no corroboration that he ever actually engaged in any sexually harrassing behavior.
Read this.
My dad had his own small business for many years. He ran a somewhat casual office. He used to kick off his shoes and walk around the office in his stockinged feet. Many years ago, he had a secretary who went to the office manager and complained about how offensive it was that he walked past her desk in his socks. She claimed he was "disrespecting" her. She got all huffy and offended. She ended up leaving the company - I can't remember if she quit or was fired, but the point is that there are all kinds of whackos out there who can manage to get themselves all offended over the most mundane and harmless things.
Until I hear anything more solid than "years ago, some lady said he said something that she felt was 'inappropriate' and made some kind of non-specific gesture - but it wasn't sexual; it just made her uncomfortable - but we're not going to say what he allegedly said or what the gesture was, and there is no corroborating evidence that it ever happened or that anything more ever became of it," I'm having a hard time being outraged by this. It pretty much clearly is a smear campaign by someone - whether it's liberals or Romney's people. They're trying to force Cain to deal with this non-issue and knock him off his stride by having to explain in detail and repeatedly how this is a non-issue. Which, for now, it seems to be.
But if you want to jump to conclusions based on nothing more than bare allegations with zero backing evidence, don't let me stop you.
If better evidence turns up, I'll be the first to criticize the guy, but for now I haven't seen it.
I'm not talking about the substance of the complaints.
I think the entire area of sexual harassment law is harmful and shouldn't exist. So I automatically think that the complaints HAVE to be without merit.
I'm talking about the way he Weinered his campaign's response.
When Politico first interviewed him about it, he did NOT straightforwardly admit that there had been allegations. He danced.
He also made up some nonsense about not knowing about any settlements, which he walked back within a day.
And he sent his campaign manager out to cry "WAH SMEAR CAMPAIGN" about an article that did nothing more than recount things he now admits are true.
If someone writes an article that says "Herman Cain was accused of sexual harassment and the restaurant group he ran paid settlements," and that information is by Cain's own admission TRUE, it's pretty Weiner-y for him to whine that he's being "smeared".
And btw I read that and clicked through to the full transcript and that's where I saw that he now admits he knew about the settlements.
So he went from "I didn't know about any settlements" to "My general counsel told me he didn't give them that much money in the settlements" within a day.
And he can claim that the allegations were whatever he wants, if the women are prevented from commenting by the terms of their legal settlements.
That's why he oh-so-bravely at first demanded that the women themselves come forward before he'd be willing to comment. Because he knows they CAN'T come forward. That's positively Clintonian, man.

Look, I'll even use Free Republic as a source!
http://www.freerepublic.com/fo.....0157/posts
I guess the part where the campaign emphatically acknowledged that the allegations had, in fact, been made (which is what Politico reported) must be in secret code in here somewhere.
I guess you haven't heard the words that have come out of Herman Cain's mouth within the past day? And that press release you quote acknowledged that the allegation existed - although it does describe it as "thinly sourced" and that the allegation "never stood up to the facts." So where did they ever deny or not admit the "allegation" existed?
I could allege that Barack Obama was a test-tube baby manufactured in a laboratory in North Korea using sperm recovered from Heinrich Himmler. And there would be an "allegation" that was made.
Wow, what a stand-up guy.
Way to straightforwardly acknowledge the allegations but deny that they were substantive, Herm.
Repeatedly refuse to answer, then answer a question with a question.
I don't think they were substantive allegations.
Yes, Cain fumbled, but only because he's not as slick as Willy.
I think he'd make a better singer than POTUS. I actually thought he had quite a soulful voice.
Agreed.
Needs to bring in James "drag a dollar through a trailer camp" Carville to do damage control.
From what I can tell from the scant reporting, he didn't rape anyone, he didn't even touch anyone, he did not threaten to use sex as a quid pro quo for advancement, or threaten firing anyone. Of course, that could all come out in the future. For now, it's just a smear.
But please allow a threadjack: I have only been to Chicago on business, and thus meals were of the take-the-client-to-a-nice-place type. Just went this weekend to visit with my son. I had an Italian beef Sandwich. And then, another. And if I had stayed another day, I would have had two more. Living in the DC area, I have never had one. They make a Philly cheese steak look like a piker.
Does anyone have any idea if there is anything in the DC area resembling this delicacy?
I had an Italian beef Sandwich.
Sounds like a euphemism to me.
You can probably order up everything you need to make your own. I'm pretty sure there are some recipes on the web.
Windy City Red Hots in Leesburg and Ashburn. Everything, including the essential Gonnella bakery bread, is brought in from Chicago.
2nd this. Windy City is where it's at for Chi-town eats in the DC metro area. I'd stick with the Leesburg location too - something about actually eating inside during 40 degree weather.

He now admits he knew about the settlements, so I guess that whole "I never heard about any settlements" thing was just panicky BS he's now retracting.
On a personal level I like Cain...of course on a personal level I like Obama and Bush...
So the "personal level" can be damned I am still voting for whatever trash the Libertarian party digs out of the dumpster for their nominee in 2012.
I don't care if he did it.
Will he work to draw down the size and reach of government avoid creating any catastrophic problems in our foreign affairs through action or inaction?
That's all I care about. Everything else be damned.
You obviously hate women, Mr. Mark.
/snark
avoid creating any catastrophic problems in our foreign affairs through action or inaction?
Wars do disproportionally and adversely affect women more then men...think of all those wives of soldiers who lose their husbands....
Oh wait.
What's really striking about that video are the perfect zoom out Peter Suderman mentions and the face that when Cain finishes singing the audience gives him a standing ovation.
1) make accusation at work
2) negotiate a settlement (cash, please.)
2A) spend money
3) sign gag-order clause
4) get new job
5) wait 12 years and change mind about the whole "confidetiality" thing
Q: would a woman EVER do such a thing ? ...it just sounds so unlike ANY women i have met.
" c o n f i d e n t i a l i t y ."
The most beautiful part about Amazing Grace is the haunting melody .Cain is singing it to the melody of Danny Boy , what a bullshit artist !
