Solyndra Roundup: Race-to-Future Cheat, Moral Equivalence[y]

Solyndra CEO Brian Harrison and CFO Bill Stover postpone testimony to House Energy and Commerce Committee. 

In a denunciation of the "phony solyndra solar scandal," Campaign for America's Future Dave Johnson says move along because Republicans do it too and the sum [allegedly] misappropriated amounts to only 1.3 percent of the Department of Energy's portfolio.

At the WashPost, M. Brad Plumer lists five myths about Solyndra, at least two and a half of which appear to be not myths but theories supported by available evidence: 

1) This scandal is no big deal. 

2) Solyndra proves that energy loan guarantees are a flop

3) The government should leave energy R&D to the private sector. 

4) Solar is a doomed industry.

5) It's all China's fault.

Yahoo! News contributor Mark Whittington claims (with attribution to "some") that the scandal is now called "Solargate." Commenter ¢ tracks the growth of "Solyndragate" and provides excellent improv on what the name Solyndra conjures in his/her mind. 

Reuters gets a few sentences of chin-stroking on the green-subsidy issue from the CEO of a Palo Alto e-automobile company which has already received generous support from the government of Israel and as of April was promising to construct an e-filling station in the holy land this year: 

Shai Agassi, chief executive of Silicon Valley-based Better Place, believes the bankruptcy raised the bar for politicians wanting to throw support behind any new clean-tech ventures.

"They need to be not just a no-brainer, they need to be where not doing it is risky," Agassi told reporters in San Francisco after addressing energy and transport ministers at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting.

Though I'll fight like hell to avoid the suffix "–gate," there is one facet in which Solyndra is following a familiar pattern: Much of the scandal's protein is clustered in the post-facto efforts to hush it up. Last week ABC News reported that Obama Administration officials had been sitting in on Solyndra board meetings prior to the bankruptcy admission. That dog has not barked again, but it also hasn't been put to sleep.

I understand the current limitations on the technology, but there is a level of absurdity that the giant fusion reactor in the sky is sending many terawatts our way, with something like 100 TW making it to the surface, and we can't tap into it in any truly practical way.

I think there will be a good market in solar in the future--it already serves some niche markets now--but we don't have to game the market to make it happen. Research is going on and will eventually get us to the point where it is one of the family of energy sources we generally rely upon.

But Chinese subsidies don't give us free money, they subsidize by having the Chinese workers get less money and poorer working conditions and by dumping waste on places where other poor workers live. The Chinese elite make lots of profits off of this method. The workers only get the ability to keep their heads above water and not starve. We get slightly cheaper goods and lose the ability to make them

Its an extreme form of slave economy, which also makes lots of money for the owners and can drive the free economy out of business. A classic case being Roman farmers who were driven out of business by slave farms and often ended up enslaved themselves because they could not feed themselves faced with competition from slaves.

Turning solar radiation into heat is easy. Turning solar radiatoin into electricity is not so easy.

It is far and away the most expensive way to produce electricity today. It depends heavily on rare earths (mostly coming from China). Large quantities of toxic waste are produced during the mining and process of the rare earths as well as during the manufacture of the panels themselves.

They serve a niche market where a little bit of electricty is needed along way from the grid.

Then there's the minor problem of energy loss converting direct current from the panel into useable 110 VAC.

And the biggest problem of what to do you use to power your electrical equipment when the sun isn't shining.

There is presently no way to store large amounts of electricity efficiently and that hurts the ability of both wind and solar to power our economy because people want electricity 24 hours a day

Technically, with the exception of geothermal and nuclear (and not if you go a step farther) all the energy is solar. Coal/Oil/NG are 'supposedly' former plant matter, wind is due to temp differentials, hydro is due to the water cycle. Just sayin. Regardless of the hypocrisy, that analogy is a logic-fail.
In the case of Halliburton, the government was buying a service. If the deal was fraudulent, it needed to be investigated as such.
In this case, Obama was playing fast and loose with taxpayer money, gambling on a tech that was at best risky.

Veidt was not only a villain, he was an uncharacteristically naive one. He was foolish to imagine that he could cover up such a plot for very long, and once the parties (US and USSR) realized they had been fooled, the consequences could have been even more drastic. Alan Moore's simplistic view of 1980s (from within the 1980s) geopolitics showed through here too brightly.

Also, Veidt's scheme ultimately rested on the threat of death to Dreiberg and Juspeczyk should they ever reveal what they knew to be the truth. What kind of hero could Veidt be, using the threat of violence in order to suppress truth?

On the rec list at Kos is a piece arguing that the Solyndra investment was really a success because the point of the investment was to build a US solar industry, and not to make money or have any particular company succeed.

Apparently since lots of people got green job training (for jobs that no longer exist) and because there was lots of research into "innovations" (which were a commercial failure) the investment is a giant win for industrial policy because that means that "the domestic US solar industry was further developed".

Now, I can be sympathetic to the economic idea that creative destruction that destroys existing firms while leaving behind their infrastructure can benefit the economy. All the fiber optics built by 90's companies that ultimately failed is still out there being used. If we let the airlines fail instead of giving them eternal access to Chapter 11 and bailouts, their physical plant and flying stock would pass on to new owners. Etc.
