Solyndra Roundup: Race-to-Future Cheat, Moral Equivalence[y]
Solyndra CEO Brian Harrison and CFO Bill Stover postpone testimony to House Energy and Commerce Committee.
In a denunciation of the "phony solyndra solar scandal," Campaign for America's Future Dave Johnson says move along because Republicans do it too and the sum [allegedly] misappropriated amounts to only 1.3 percent of the Department of Energy's portfolio.
At the WashPost, M. Brad Plumer lists five myths about Solyndra, at least two and a half of which appear to be not myths but theories supported by available evidence:
1) This scandal is no big deal.
2) Solyndra proves that energy loan guarantees are a flop
3) The government should leave energy R&D to the private sector.
4) Solar is a doomed industry.
5) It's all China's fault.
Yahoo! News contributor Mark Whittington claims (with attribution to "some") that the scandal is now called "Solargate." Commenter ¢ tracks the growth of "Solyndragate" and provides excellent improv on what the name Solyndra conjures in his/her mind.
Reuters gets a few sentences of chin-stroking on the green-subsidy issue from the CEO of a Palo Alto e-automobile company which has already received generous support from the government of Israel and as of April was promising to construct an e-filling station in the holy land this year:
Shai Agassi, chief executive of Silicon Valley-based Better Place, believes the bankruptcy raised the bar for politicians wanting to throw support behind any new clean-tech ventures.
"They need to be not just a no-brainer, they need to be where not doing it is risky," Agassi told reporters in San Francisco after addressing energy and transport ministers at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting.
Watchmen fans, wasn't the electric filling station the source of supervillain Adrian Veidt's politically correct fortune? Just asking…
Though I'll fight like hell to avoid the suffix "–gate," there is one facet in which Solyndra is following a familiar pattern: Much of the scandal's protein is clustered in the post-facto efforts to hush it up. Last week ABC News reported that Obama Administration officials had been sitting in on Solyndra board meetings prior to the bankruptcy admission. That dog has not barked again, but it also hasn't been put to sleep.
Ron Bailey highlights news I buried overnight: The House has dug up emails from Obama Administration officials urging bureaucrats to jump the gun in order to help Solyndra win the race to the future.
The Atlantic's John Hudson rounds up pro-administration reactions, which run the gamut from blaming President Bush to blaming China.
C-SPAN 3 triples your pleasure with live coverage of the House hearings. If I have any followups I'll try and confine them to the comments thread.

No -gate needed, as some plucky commenter (not I, alas) came up with a lovely name: Solyndra Green.
What's behind the green door?
maybe this is the sequel
Why not blame Albania? Or the Sun?
After the top photo was taken, Obama used the robot arm to kill a Alien alien queen.
I understand the current limitations on the technology, but there is a level of absurdity that the giant fusion reactor in the sky is sending many terawatts our way, with something like 100 TW making it to the surface, and we can't tap into it in any truly practical way.
I think there will be a good market in solar in the future--it already serves some niche markets now--but we don't have to game the market to make it happen. Research is going on and will eventually get us to the point where it is one of the family of energy sources we generally rely upon.
"I think there will be a good market in solar in the future--it already serves some niche markets now--but we don't have to game the market to make it happen."
And if we continue to game the market, the chances of a successful product continue to recede.
It sure doesn't help. If you're an investor, watching the Solyndra Green scandal from a distance, then it wouldn't be surprising if you just decided to skip any solar investments in the future. People are pretty danged risk averse nowadays, anyway.
Oh but we do.
Plants trap solar energy for us, become fossil fuels, then we burn them.
Voila! Solar power!
Sure there's a few million years between the solar energy hitting the planet and our using it, but the energy did come from the sun.
That's a good point. I just ate lunch, absorbing my solar energy for the afternoon. I'm also enjoying the many degrees above absolute zero that the sunconditioner is providing.
FTFY - ManBearPig is real! I'm totally cereal!!
This.
Enough agriculture to feed 6+ billion people is pretty practical.
Plants trap solar energy for us, become fossil fuels, then we burn them.
Why even add the fossil fuel step? Sun --> Plant ---> Eat Plant ---> do shit.
See? No need.
Especially not when other countries are willing to game the market too.
The more China subsidizes it, the less we should.
"The more China subsidizes it, the less we should."
Yep. We should be tickled pink to take the Chinese government's money.
I had a coworker, an intelligent, who was shocked when I made that argument about subsidies in regards to something else. I said that if a foreign government were willing to give us free money, we should take it. He said he had never heard of that argument or thought of it that way.
John,
I live in SF; nothing like that surprises me any more.
uhhh...you live in 'SF'? ... I hope to god you mean the city of San Francisco cause I read that as you are some sort of tapeworm slowly eating away at SugarFree's rotting pancreas.
I LOLed.
But Chinese subsidies don't give us free money, they subsidize by having the Chinese workers get less money and poorer working conditions and by dumping waste on places where other poor workers live. The Chinese elite make lots of profits off of this method. The workers only get the ability to keep their heads above water and not starve. We get slightly cheaper goods and lose the ability to make them
Its an extreme form of slave economy, which also makes lots of money for the owners and can drive the free economy out of business. A classic case being Roman farmers who were driven out of business by slave farms and often ended up enslaved themselves because they could not feed themselves faced with competition from slaves.
But they'll win the Subsidy Race!
Turning solar radiation into heat is easy. Turning solar radiatoin into electricity is not so easy.
It is far and away the most expensive way to produce electricity today. It depends heavily on rare earths (mostly coming from China). Large quantities of toxic waste are produced during the mining and process of the rare earths as well as during the manufacture of the panels themselves.
They serve a niche market where a little bit of electricty is needed along way from the grid.
Then there's the minor problem of energy loss converting direct current from the panel into useable 110 VAC.
And the biggest problem of what to do you use to power your electrical equipment when the sun isn't shining.
There is presently no way to store large amounts of electricity efficiently and that hurts the ability of both wind and solar to power our economy because people want electricity 24 hours a day
Technically, with the exception of geothermal and nuclear (and not if you go a step farther) all the energy is solar. Coal/Oil/NG are 'supposedly' former plant matter, wind is due to temp differentials, hydro is due to the water cycle. Just sayin. And the nuke/geo angle is a result of the previous star(s) that blew to pieces to make us. So there you have it.
must learn to refresh after hours away from terminal.
"Get away from her you BITCH!!!"
Best line in the whole movie.
I vote for "Why don't you put *her* in charge?"
I'd say it was:
"Yeah, but it's a dry heat."
Apologies to anyone in Texas right now.
Also like "Let's take off and nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure."
"Ripley she doesnt have bad dreams because she's just a piece of plastic."
Seen that movie too many times.
Let's take off and nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
This one has passed into the pop culture lexicon. Clearly the winner.
Game over, man. Game over!
Paraphrasing: I don't know which species is worse. You don't see them screwing eachother over for a percentage.
After the top photo was taken, Obama used the robot arm to kill a Alien alien queen.
That can't be right. Michelle is still walking around.
Speaking of Obama failures, if anyone is using twitter, take a look at the ongoing mockery of his campaign's new Attack Watch.
Wow, thanks for spoiling the plot twist at the end of Watchmen. Why don't you tell people that the Comedian is Silk Spectre II's dad, too.
or that Kelly from Bad News Bears dies. You basatard!
At the WashPost, M. Brad Plumer lists five myths about Solyndra, at least two and a half of which appear to be not myths but theories supported by available evidence:
FACT: Any piece of journalism that involves the "MYTH/FACT" format is always a pile of crap.
AEIC report concludes, "Energy innovation should be a higher national priority."
Lobbying group lobbies. News at 10.
what does that say about posts that use the 'FACT' approach?
The alt text on the top photo is WONDERFUL!
I am beginning to think this could be a godsend for the Democratic Party: an excuse to impeach Obama and get him out of the way to improve their chances of winning in 2012.
Think: they will be able to get a better candidate without Obama's baggage. The Party can dissociate itself from and denounce the dirty crony capitalists that have sullied its pure Green ideals . Biden can gracefully serve out the remainder of the term while Hillary can step in and offer to give the mature leadership the country needs without the threat of the new prez selling out to the dirty Teabaggers. Win-win-win.
Nope, not that easy. If they turn on Obama, they'll alienate a percentage of their core. In addition, the taint of wildly supporting a corrupt politician will kill them in the general.
With the economy not just continuing its sad ways but actually slowing down some more, no Democrat has a chance now. Barring some amazing miracle of first order.
I agree a Democratic presidential win next year is a long shot but you're not getting the core Dems to vote against Obama no matter what. They may, however, sit on their hands on election day, and the Party cannot afford that. Better to cut their losses now and get another shot at the big seat than demoralize their base.
I think they're fucked, either way. They may have done some permanent damage to themselves, which will only be repaired by GOP stupidity when it controls the government in 2013.
So what would the Team Blue wag-the-dog play be?
(Team Red always has the war card.)
So expect them to come back strong in '14.
Certainly the only sure thing is that the Republicans will eventually fuck it up just as bad as the Dems and the penxdulum will swing again. Sometimes I can't get past the idea that we're living out some twisted Vault-tec.social experiment.
I don't think so. I think it is going to be a long time before you see either party fuck up as bad as the Dems did from 08 to 10. That was just an epic two years of fuck up.
John,
It seems to be a positive feedback system. We just oscillate faster and more wildly.
Congratulations Overseer! Welcome the future! Please see Attachment A regarding deployment of your Vault-tec G.E.C.K. system.
Attachment A: Your vault has not been supplied with the G.E.C.K. system. However you should feel free to administer the paranoia inducing neurotoxins we have provided to you at your pleasure. Remember to keep the armory unlocked and open.
I don't think the word "permanent" works that way.
Though I agree with what you mean.
I dunno... there's a generation coming of voting age that seems to have been locked in a cupboard with Das Kapital for the entirety of their formative years. I just hope what the intertoobs shows me is a heavily biased sample.
This. Every teenager I know thinks they are owed something from someone just because they consume oxygen. They have entitlement in their blood.
I think that's been pretty universally the case with teenagers for quite some time. At least since the Boomers hit their teen years.
Not that this invalidates the thesis at all, of course. Just saying the current crop learned at their parent's knees.
Yeah, obviously crony capitalism is immoral, but giving it to a company that's going to go bankrupt anyway?
"C'est pire qu'un crime, c'est une faute."
This really is a big black eye for "cleantech/greentech" boosters - Solyndra also had $1.1B in venture capital funding.
Well, there are always dumb investors, and many VCs would rather make lots of risky investments hoping for a small number of home runs to make up for the many losses.
And either way, it's their money, not mine.
$1.1B is an enormous amount of VC money - that scale of funding is normally acquired via IPO or buyout.
How about if $.5Bn was guaranteed by the taxpayers?
That would change my sums.
Hearings on C-SPAN 3, right before UK Prime Minister's minutes: Maybe the MSM really is burying this story.
Brad Plumer's explanation of myth #3 is particularly amusing as he points out the significant amount of energy regulations as an excuse why government has to fund innovations yet doesn't raise any questions as to whether the regulations themselves should be done away with to make innovation cheaper.
Oh, also, one of the big solar projects out here getting more than a $1 billion from DOE isn't using the money for innovation. The innovation was already done. The money is to pay for the construction, with a lot of the funds going to union labor the company signed agreements with to avoid "greenmail."
"""

"""
Please don't. This is even funnier than Greece failing after two bailouts. Is that alt-text correct? That thing that looks like the side of a crib is Solyndra's product? BHO invested half of a billion dollars in a plan to build solar panels that you can see through? Zoot alors.
The best green energy policy available is to high gas prices.
no, you to high
Technically he was born rich, but yeah Veidt Enterprises made the hydrants. Although what's even more interesting is that these hydrants were only created because Dr. Manhattan used his super powers to make lithium for them.
So, really, it was more of a Manhattan project?
Creating a being with control over all time and space. Now that would be winning the future!
I'm personally nominating Joe Biden to be the guinea pig. Fuck it, I just don't care anymore.
Until he wanders off to Mars and beyond because he starts equating intelligent life with rocks.
There was no need to create one.
Q already existed.
I've seen scandals so tiny and fast that they can scarcely be said to have occured at all.
I do have both sets of genitalia, but neither of them is functional, so "its" is fine.
I think the trendy term is "zhe"
Gesundheit.
The hacked Scarlett Johanson pics are all over the internet. Her body is really as good as advertised.

do a google search for buzzfeed.com scarlett Johnansson nude photos leaked and you will find your link.
Your work blocks you from seeing Zuzana, but you can get to buzzfeed?
By the way, you need to look up Zuzana when you get home.
I got to buzzfeed on my smart phone. I wouldn't dare go there at work.
The top story now is this:
Jesus Christ.
Oh, I bet they're going to investigate. Feds love porn.
Cops love porn. We used to have a joke when I was a prosecutor that the CID office had some kind of an office wide siren that went off when ever we called them to investigate a porn case. Those cases were always promptly investigated. Robberies, assaults, rapes, those waited their turn. But porn cases always went to the top.
Judges love porn. They have to see it to know whether it's legal. The seeing part being the critical issue.
My cool story:
I was taking Japanese classes at night, and was chatting with one of the other students. He was an RCMP officer. I told him where I worked.
He said that they had been there investigating someone downloading child porn using work computers. They seized the computer, took it back to the detachment, fired it up, and "everyone gathered 'round to check it out... some really sick shit on there".
Oh... really? And the whole detachment just had to check it out?
At next week's class, I sat on the other side of the room.
Oh, I bet they're going to investigate. Feds love porn.
Nudity != porn
I don't think I can get home soon enough.
was just thinking that.
Mustgethome. Mustgethome. Mustgethome.
Man, that's a nice ass. Her only flaw is that stupid tattoo on her wrist.
Yeah. I hate those damned things.
You'd think she'd have a better camera on her phone.
agreed (finally got to take a look from my home pc)
Does she have a ...a giant Johanson?
Wow she is actually not a bad photographer.
Great composition for simple self nudie pics.
D - A - M - N ! ! !
How do we know that's really her? There are five year olds out there who can doctor a photo and fool the most expert detectives.

I like the bold for the beginning of each paragraph. I look forward to illuminated blog posts in the future.

Dude, come on, I called this a week ago. I gets no credit, i tell ya..
GILMORE|9.8.11 @ 1:41PM|#
I don't know if this has been noted already, but apparently that solar-energy company Obama had touted (Solyndra) is now being raided by the FBI
http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/.....d=14473051
Apparently the boondoggle is connected to Obama fundraising...?
""Beginning in March, ABC News, in partnership with the iWatch News/the Center for Public Integrity, was first to report on simmering questions about the role political influence may have played Solyndra's selection as the Obama administration's first loan guarantee recipient. Federal auditors had flagged the loan, saying some applicants had benefitted from special treatment""
One of the lead private investors in Solyndra was an Oklahoma billionaire who served as an Obama "bundler," raising money during the 2008 presidential campaign.
Who bets this becomes "Solargate"? Solyndragate isnt as sonorous....[snip]
Mustgethome.
Mustgethome.
Mustgethome.
I love how crony capitalism and corrupt dealmaking is *perfectly OK* when its not like, Dick Cheney and Halliburton and shit... no, when it's a Green, Solar Outfit, and the Dear Leader...?
Well, this is clearly all just conservatives politicising a perfectly normal waste of a half-billion dollars... I mean, a half billion is *nothing* these days!
Progressives will give themselves a moral-superiority pass on fucking anything. "Its OK when WE do it..." Because...because.... we're the Good Guys! We offer sweetheart deals to politically-connected *Green* companies! Not Evil Oil companies! Don't you see the difference?? You must be on Team Red if you think this is a 'big deal'. Nya nya nya not listening anymore..."
It would appear typical though that the Liberal version of 'corrupt capitalists' are also terrible businesspeople. At least Conservative Big, Evil, Corrupt Corporations that be stealin' teh oils, exploitin' the poor, etc. can *make money* with their special political influence and favors.
"I love how crony capitalism and corrupt dealmaking is *perfectly OK* when its not like, Dick Cheney and Halliburton..."
Regardless of the hypocrisy, that analogy is a logic-fail.
In the case of Halliburton, the government was buying a service. If the deal was fraudulent, it needed to be investigated as such.
In this case, Obama was playing fast and loose with taxpayer money, gambling on a tech that was at best risky.
Oh, niggle niggle mr pedantic.
The point was that the whole "Halliburton using political ties to get favorable deals"-story ...
e.g. http://www.commondreams.org/views05/1008-28.htm
http://query.nytimes.com/gst/f.....A9629C8B63
etc.
...was a political punching bag for the left that never got old....
Now that the shoe's on the other foot, they cry, "Nothing to see here!"
You can dispute the nature of the "political favoritism", but the general theme is similar enough. 'Administration awards donors with juicy favors.'
And I did already note - at least the overpriced services Halliburton provided *got provided*. Solyndra, by contrast, was money-toilet.
Here's Daily Kos on the issue =
Well here's a surprise: conservatives and oil interests are pushing deceptive and destructive stories about President Obama and clean energy. Imagine that! Their intent (as always) is to turn people against President Obama, clean energy, national energy policy, stimulus to help the economy, and government in general. It's what they do. Here is some information to help you push back on the latest whipped-up, anti-green, anti-government, anti-Obama "scandal."
Yeah, flushing that half-billion dollars down the toilet was all about *stimulus*.
If you take that argument seriously (and there's little reason to) - it fails on its own. So, you, obama-phile, are saying this was simply an incredible failure to produce stimulus? Not political cronyism? Oh, I'm sooo relieved.
I mean, a half billion is *nothing* these days!
"What's that dripping noise?"
"Leaky pipe. I put a bucket under it, no worries."
*next month, when the water bill arrieves*
"WHAT THE FUCK?!"
Solyndracal.
As noted above, Solyndra scandal involving clothed middle-aged men (so far) is trending higher than nude Scarlett Johansson on El Goog-el. This kind of thing wouldn't have happened when the stars were truly stars!
How's "nude Lauren Bacall" trending?
Down at about 70 degrees.
Speaking of Obama scandals, I haven't heard much about Gunwalker lately. Has Solargate got more juice or is it just media/public ADD?
Well, that's not a myth, that's an opinion. A myth is a falsehood disguised as fact.
supervillain Adrian Veidt
Was he a Villain?
Also the ending of the movie was better then the Comic Book ending.
Mr Manhattan was already being set up with the whole cancer thing...why insert the fake alien attack when you already have a good fall guy?
Because why pass up the chance to blow a hole through New York City?
Because it provides a highbrow literary reason for us to mock Kruggymandias?
Veidt was not only a villain, he was an uncharacteristically naive one. He was foolish to imagine that he could cover up such a plot for very long, and once the parties (US and USSR) realized they had been fooled, the consequences could have been even more drastic. Alan Moore's simplistic view of 1980s (from within the 1980s) geopolitics showed through here too brightly.
Also, Veidt's scheme ultimately rested on the threat of death to Dreiberg and Juspeczyk should they ever reveal what they knew to be the truth. What kind of hero could Veidt be, using the threat of violence in order to suppress truth?
Apparently, there are even more sweetheart deals with green companies backed by big Obama fundraisers coming to light.
If the coastal media is looking to compensate for the shame of their Obama-fellating, they certainly don't lack for opportunities.
The Missile Gap is back! A new chart reveals that the U.S.A. is falling behind Red China in the race to spend public money on green boondoggles.
Didn't Bank Of America own a chunk of Chinese Development Bank?
If so, some of our TARP dollars went to subsidize Chinese solar companies.
Nor on highspeed rail death-traps.
Mr. President, we must not allow a greendoggle gap!
O Steven Chu, you've done it again. Eagle-eyed Energy Secretary rushes $1.2 billion out door and into hands of San Bernardino-based Mojave Solar Project.
Pathological subsidizers.
We reported it first:
http://www.desertdispatch.com/.....head.html.
Who's right: Steny Hoyer or Joe Biden?
Steny Hoyer: Solyndra is "not the face of the Recovery Act."
Joe Biden: Solyndra is "exactly what the Recovery Act is all about."
I'm particularly amused with the 'we're too busy mowing the lawn to show up' stuff.
Congress-grillings hardly ever accomplish anything, but ya know, there's a half-bil of taxpayer money that seems to have disappeared.
I think we're due some information.
Eagle-eyed Energy Secretary rushes $1.2 billion out door and into hands of San Bernardino-based Mojave Solar Project.
"Next stop- Antelope Valley."
I don't know why they're not playing up the victim angle.
"Those mean old Solyndrites done us a bad turn!"
On the rec list at Kos is a piece arguing that the Solyndra investment was really a success because the point of the investment was to build a US solar industry, and not to make money or have any particular company succeed.
Apparently since lots of people got green job training (for jobs that no longer exist) and because there was lots of research into "innovations" (which were a commercial failure) the investment is a giant win for industrial policy because that means that "the domestic US solar industry was further developed".
Now, I can be sympathetic to the economic idea that creative destruction that destroys existing firms while leaving behind their infrastructure can benefit the economy. All the fiber optics built by 90's companies that ultimately failed is still out there being used. If we let the airlines fail instead of giving them eternal access to Chapter 11 and bailouts, their physical plant and flying stock would pass on to new owners. Etc.
But in this case the technology and infrastructure surviving the collapse is crap nobody wants to use because it can't be sold profitably.
Creative destruction doesn't work when the underlying product is something nobody wants other than crunchies dreaming of unicorn poop power.
For fun, you can search around and find an LA Times story from last year about complaints that the DOE isn't handing out the money for solar projects fast enough.
Solyndra is the tip of the iceberg. The controversy here is that DOE lied about doing due diligence and passed Solyndra through while intentionally delaying others that competed with DOE's officers business interests. The DOE could have safely diversified its bets with 40 small america business applicants but they blew the money on a few inside special interest applicants who paid lobby money while freezing out those small American businesses and jobs. Subpeona's will show that Lachlan Seward, of the DOE, ordered staff and consultant's to change their review criteria and findings in order to manipulate winners and losers.
Look into the ones that didn't get in because they didn't bribe the right people.
The site: http://corruptiondoe.weebly.com has the real truth about Solyndra and beyond...
It shows that: - Only campaign contributors received funding from the DOE ATVM and Loan programs and competitors to those interests were frozen out. - Key White House staff were informed of the misdeeds but they covered them up. - A criminally illegal protection investor money racket was being run by individuals in, and around, the DOE funding programs, Detroit and Goldman Sachs. - Detroit ordered all competing efforts killed off or permanently delayed. - Tesla is involved in the same influence-buying scam and financials fudging here Everybody knows about the site, above. Hundreds of thousands of people have seen it. Nobody can ignore the facts here. This was all pay-to-play.
