Organic Folks Don Their Tin Foil Hats To Explain Outbreak of Deadly E. Coli Bacteria
Nearly a score of people have died from infections from a deadly strain of E. coli bacteria in Germany. Thousands more have been sickened. German health authorities at first blamed Spanish cucumbers and more recently organic bean sprouts. Both appear to have been exonerated and the search for the source of contamination goes on.
In the meantime, some of the more unhinged proponents of organic foods, evidently panicked by the claim that organic bean sprouts might be the source of the bacteria, have donned their tin foil hats and have figured out what's really going on: the bacteria have been genetically engineered with the goal of discrediting organic foods: A small excerpt from the paranoid screed over at Natural News:
…if you can make people AFRAID of fresh vegetables—or even outlaw them altogether—then you can force the entire population onto a diet of dead foods and processed foods that promote degenerative disease and bolster the profits of the powerful drug companies.
It's all part of the same agenda, you see: Keep people sick, deny them access to healing herbs and supplements, then profit from their suffering at the hands of the global drug cartels.
GMOs play a similar role in all this, of course: They're designed to contaminate the food supply with genetic code that causes widespread infertility among human beings. And those who are somehow able to reproduce after exposure to GMOs still suffer from degenerative disease that enriches the drug companies from "treatment."…
By the way, the most likely explanation of where this strain of e.coli was bioengineered is that the drug giants came up with it in their own labs. Who else has access to all the antibiotics and equipment needed to manage the targeted mutations of potentially thousands of e.coli colonies? The drug companies are uniquely positioned to both carry out this plot and profit from it. In other words, they have the means and the motive to engage in precisely such actions.
Aside from the drug companies, perhaps only the infectious disease regulators themselves have this kind of laboratory capacity. The CDC, for example, could probably pull this off if they really wanted to.
The proof that somebody bioengineered this e.coli strain is written right in the DNA of the bacteria. That's forensic evidence, and what it reveals cannot be denied. This strain underwent repeated and prolonged exposure to eight different classes of antibiotics, and then it somehow managed to appear in the food supply. How do you get to that if not through a well-planned scheme carried out by rogue scientists? There is no such thing as "spontaneous mutation" into a strain that is resistant to the top eight classes of brand-name antibiotic drugs being sold by Big Pharma today. Such mutations have to be deliberate.
In an email, one biotechnologist notes this irony:
Europe's vaunted 'farm to fork' labeling and traceability system, which increases consumer confidence by allowing end user freedom of choice, and tracking to quickly identify and remove from the system any problematic foods, is only applied to GM foods, for which there have never been any documented cases of harm.
If you can stand it, you can marvel at Natural News' dark conspiracies here.

E. coli is the new crop circle.
I once saw Elvis using a UFO to make crop circles in a Monsanto Corn Field!
He made them with a poop-ray no doubt.
and then he went to Trader Vick’s
His hair was perfect.
Maybe it’s the new anthrax:

And maybe this article is so antagonistic towards the organic farming industry that it should have been published in Bias, rather than Reason?

Here’s a theory that I have. Vegans are people from a planet orbiting Vega. They’re here to steal all of our meat by tricking us into not eating it ourselves.
The evidence is right there in their name! The truth is out there! Follow the money! Back, and to the left. Back, and to the left.
You had me at “back, and to the left”.
It’s the most compelling argument in a world of compelling arguments.
You, sir, must have a newsletter. And I would like to subscribe to it due to my overwhelming interest in your views.
they exonerated the sprouts!? oh shit, the witchhunt goes on. I, for one, blame Monsanto.
…proves it beyond question…
I love the proof about resistances. This person couldn’t have taken even an intro level bio class in college.
Oh wait. He does capoeira. Shit, I guess he must be right.
Wait, aren’t environmentalists in favor of population control? They should be cheering the… well, the whatever-the-fuck they’re talking about.
Of course it’s a conspiracy! How else would e. coli get on vegetables that were grown in poop? Oh, wait…
but cow dung is antimicrobial. the thousand year tradition of smearing cow feces over houses proves that it had to be a conspiracy.
theres supposed to be an “in India” in there somewhere.
Dude, I know ‘shrooms aren’t microbes, but…
That’s what cracked me up – they can’t even stay on-message. Humans bad, Gaia good.
And, uh, anyone who thinks the greatest crisis facing our species is that there aren’t enough of us, well, that’s batshit crazy.
Holy hell that screed is batshit insane.
How else could it develop a resistance to eight antibiotics? Perhaps that comes from Doctors giving out antibiotics to every idiot who demands them and from patients who then take the antibiotics for a few days instead of the full course.
A vast conspiracy is a much better explanation than the predictable result of everyday behavior.
“A vast conspiracy is a much better explanation than the predictable result of everyday behavior”
Always, and always. The simplest explanation may usually the right one, but it is also the most boring (and the least able to be exploited for political or social goals)
To be fair, agricultural use of antibiotics is a pretty asinine idea, and a legitimate public health consideration.
Bingo. Dung from grain fed, rBGH pumped cow is the simplest explanation.
Is it actually resistant to 8 antibiotics, or is that just some crazy theory that’s part of the bigger theory?
yeah I think every word in that essay needs confirmation from 3 independent sources.
Including the words “a,” “an,” and “the.”
here is my conspiracy theory: the EU doesn’t want people to know that their vaunted food control nanny state isn’t worth the euros they are paid with – so they are pointing blame left and right. Come to think of it, it doesn’t really need to be a consipiracy, it could just be one cratotheist middle manager in the gov’t labs that knows he fucked up and is sandbagging the shit out of things.
MDR – transporter, such as MsbA. These are mutated flippases – flippases normally are responsible for flipping membrane lipids from one side of the bacteria to the other, i.e. pumping them out. A little bit of evolutionary magic, and they wind up pumping out all sorts of greasy molecules, like antibiotics.

so insightful the squirrels duped it.
It’s a COOKBOOK!
This actually made me laugh.
Kent Hovind, is that you?
Nah, I was out riding my dinosaur that day.
I’m so tired of these insipid supporters of intelligent design.
organic, locally produced food tastes better, takes far less resources we fight wars over to distribute & doesn’t genetically contain pesticides. soils that aren’t blasted with industrial poison also contain a lot more valuable minerals & are much more pleasant to live around.
you don’t have to waive the intelligent design banner to see the scientific & practical reasons to prefer natural, decentralized food.
So, in addition to failing your science and economics courses, you also failed grammar?
reading comprehension is obviously not one of your skills.
consumers overwhelmingly prefer locally produced, organic products to mass produced processed products. it takes billions of subsidies and intervention from the federal government to tip the economic scales in Big Ag’s direction.
i grow plenty of mine own produce organically.
however, let’s remember that there are no peer reviewed studies i am aware of that show any sort of statistically significant health benefits to organic produce, and certainly not anywhere near enough to justify the cost.
i have no problem paying $20/lb for an epic cheese. i will pay for quality.
i will not pay for something because it’s “organic” because in and of itself that means nothing when it regards taste, quality, or nutrition
local produce IN GENERAL tastes better because it is generally ripened on vine vs. in transit, but that’s tangential to whether it’s organic
2 thing makes something more healthy: 1) it contains more nutritious material or 2) it has less harmful material. where you are growing it yourself, you can have comfort #2 doesn’t exist. when you are purchasing it in a store, organic provides more assurance, irrespective of what your position is on #1.
michael. again, show me the PEER REVIEWED STUDIES.
every study i have seen show NO statistically difference in nutrition for organic vs. nonorganic
As someone who actually owns a family operated organic farm, there is absolutely a difference. It is asinine to assume that what you put into your body, if of better quality, wont make you healthier and less prone to disease. The same goes for any living organism – let chickens wander around in a pen eating leafy greens instead of putting them in a box and force feeding them corn, and you get a better quality meat with a far lower chance of e-coli contamination and other problems. The meat itself is of a higher quality, because it was muscle that was actually used to, you know, WALK AROUND. Same goes for veggies. Dumping phosphorous and nitrogen into the soil – the only way to grow the same crop on the same plot of land year after year and not get dust bowl conditions – is a lazy way of avoiding crop rotation and a good way of ensuring that natural minerals in the soil are never replenished and therefore never absorbed into the crop.
And what is all this nonsense about how one farmer can now produce for 114 people, that being the source of our modern ability to specialize labor? Weve got 17 percent unemployment – cut the minimum wage and let them do some manual labor. Or do Libertarians just suspend their beliefs when someone criticizes their food supply they know nothing about? You talk about the supposedly high cost of organic food – ever stop to apply your housing market ideas to this – that the market, clouded with government policy, has priced things incorrectly? Maybe, just maybe, food SHOULD cost a little bit more than it does? Doesnt seem odd to you that a single dollar can get a person enough shitty calories for a full day, but it quite literally cant buy anything else?
The thing people miss regarding organic food is that plants don’t care where he nutrients come from. It could be cow manure or ammonium sulfate for all they care. There are horticultural practices that can have drastic impacts on texure, flavor, and the nutritional content of the vegetables. Farmers like to make sure that the soil is rich in macronutrients so that the plants grow as fast as possible and as large as possible (you can insert water for nutrients as well to that statement). In the early years of organic, the macronutrient load was lower compared to non-organic and as a result the growth rates were slower and everything was more concentrated. When organic farming became an industry, a lot of that went away. IIRC, there has been a lot of study about this with herbs because of essential oil extraction.
Now I won’t argue about varieties and such because there is so much variation and dunphy is on to it already.
You don’t have to waive the intelligent design banner, but you do have to be stupid and have no idea how the worlds billions are actually kept from starving.
that’s a myth. decentralized food production can feed the world.
I’m totally okay with decentralized food production.
I just think individual farmers should be given the choice whether to use genetically engeineered seeds or not.
You want to ban them for everyone. But nobody is forcing organic farmers to switch to GM. And no, I don’t consider pollen wafting over the fence a form of contamination. Unless you deliberately grow a 100% GMO crop like Percy Schmeiser, you aren’t going to get sued and as long as the organic standards set a resonable threshold it won’t endanger your organic cert either.
I believe in a libertarian & Constitutional definition of property rights. I have no interest or right to suggest GMs be banned from farmers who want to use them.
You are making a blanket judgement that pollen wafting (& maybe even pesticide spill over) does not qualify as injury or damage to an organic farmer’s quiet enjoyment of adjacent property. I don’t agree with that at all.
Pesticide spillover is a reasonable harm. But you have yet to prove that pollen wafting does any kind of actual harm. Organic pollen and pollen of all sorts of plant types wafts. What is different about GM pollen?
The only reason it can be considered a harm is if you are growing a crop and it puts your crop out of organic certification. But that is dependent on the organic certification threshold.
It’s a subjective thing, and in general I don’t think subjective issues are legitimate targets for litigation. For instance, if I paint my house a color you consider ugly, that’s not something you can sue me for, unless I joined a HOA or something.
Perhaps organic farmers, if they really wish to avoid GMO pollen, can form a collective and locate in land near eachother, similar to an HOA, and then make anyone who buys land there agree not to grow GMOs.
They just can’t impose an arbitrary restriction that puts a burden on someone else in the absence of any actual objective harm having been proven.
(I asked this question below) how does a plant become resistant to Roundup?
Litigation.
What always killed me about the genetic pollution argument is that its always directed at the company that created the seed rather than the farmer who planted it (or didn’t tie the tarp down properly). If I sray you in the face with roundup, is it monsantos fault?
Common law has dictated for centuries that there isn’t a goddamn thing you can do about water flowing from my property on to yours, your flooding problem be damned. It’s your responsibility to keep water off of your property.
How the fuck is pollen any goddamn different other than it bothers someone’s sensibilities about “pure” food.
And this is coming from someone who depends on organic gardening for his company’s health.
It is my unerstanding that Monsanto actively tests crops and sues farmers. I think its because they have to vigorously pretect their patent or they lose protections which would explain why they offer low settlement sums. but what do I know.
that’s an extraordinary claim that requires evidence
as is the claim that it can’t.
Well we currently are able to produce enough food for the world, and conservative estimates state that organic production would require 4x the acreage. So not really all that extraordinary.
[citation needed]
I say intelligent design because clearly this e.coli has an intelligent designer and could not arise from natural conditions. But I digest.
Go ahead and be religious, just let me eat my bacteria-free frankenfoods in peace.
i’m happy to allow you to live in peace with your frankenfoods… provided I don’t have to subsidize them, the GM seed doesn’t migrate over to organic farmland, and I don’t have to breathe industrial poison.
and I’m happy to say, too bad. We have been eating genetically modified foods for millenia. My advice, stop eating.
we have not been eating pesticide resistant engineered food for a millenia. its birth was just after WW2 when all of the chemical plants we built for war munitions were put to use making pesticides.
my advice to you, look up “property rights”. even in a world without a government, you have no right to pollute my choices.
but are you are just drawing an arbitrary line at pesticides, or is all genetic modification bad? At any rate, I don’t think argribusiness is allowed to spill chemicals on their neighbors under any circumstances.
For the record, I support ending farm subsidies of all kinds, I support punishing polluters, and I support eating big juicy superproduce.
By “food” do you mean “insects”?
Because pasticides, by definition, don’t kill plants.
But I thought pastacides kill durum wheat plants…?
Roundup kills organic plants that aren’t Roundup resistant. It doesn’t kill Roundup resistant weeds or insects, though.
it doesn’t kill insects roundup resistant or not.
it actually does kill worms in the soil.
as far as the parasitic insects, you are correct. the GMO food itself kills them (or another poison if they become resistant to the GMO food).
I’d like to see that study, because all I have ever run across was that it adversely effected mites and springtails but didn’t kill them.
As far as the parasitic part, I’m assuming you are talking about Bt. You realize every organic tomato ou can buy is literally covered in the stuff right? You only have to worry if you don’t have a spine.
Google “glyphosate”. You’ll find plenty of research. You may want to do the same with “natural vs. synthetic Bt”
Lol, I found the singular earthworm study. You should probably read primary sources when you see these claims. The study found a decrease in the rate of growth for that particular species. There is absolutely no mention of mortality and the study itself is disputed.
Lol, and the Bt study that the environmental rags constantly hyperbolize is the Swiss Bt corn pollen study that showed harm to monarch butterflies. How in the world anyone extrapolates from that study that gmo Bt endotoxin is fundamentally different than sprayed synthetic Bt endotoxin and may therefore harm vertebrates is frankly beyond me. They might have an argument between gmo endotoxin and the pathways of the actual soil bacteria toxin but since farmers have been spraying synthetic Bt endotoxin for decades, that ship won’t float.
I should have realized before now that when someone starts spouting inanities and I wonder from where they originated, I should not for instance google “glyphosate soil invertebrate” and should instead check wikipedia. Although the former provides some intriguing abstracts.
Oh and since I’m done bashing those other claims, earthworms aren’t insects and roundup doesn’t kill insects whether parasitic or not.
If you don’t want to breathe industrial poison perhaps you should also give up all the products that you have access to thanks to the benefits of the processes that release those poisons. Or you could just continue to live in hypocracy and stfu.
how can i possibly disagree with someone who sees no distinction between living in a world with poison vs. ingesting it?
meryl streetp: we need to address this terrible Alar scandal right away…
to quote some old greek d00d, “everything is a poison in sufficient quantity”, so let’s be more specific.
too much alcohol is poisonous. that doesn’t mean vanilla extract, which contains alcohol, is a poison
yeah, but vanilla extract is poison for other reasons. There’s a reason why most orchids aren’t edible….
that too.
please tell me you don’t think organic food isn’t covered in toxic chemicals.
now that’s a tin can conspiracy.
What the hell do you think pyrethroids are?
PJ ORourke did a bit in one of his books about the poisons and carcinogens in foods that are naturally occurring, including lima beans, potatoes, etc.
IIRC, pyrethrin comes from chrysanthemums. You do realize that crysanthemums are edible, right?
Go ahead and drink some pyrethroids and let’s see how that works out for you. Dose makes the poison.
Seriously that was the dumbest thing I read on this thread.
Land isn’t a resource we fight wars over?
every US conflict since getting drug into WW2 was directly related to the mining, or the prevention of others mining, scarce resources.
what resource does Korea and Vietnam have?
South China Sea
study your fucking geography.
>.
epic fucking food.
uhm, women?
The South China Sea is not land or a natural resource. It is, as the name cunningly disguises, a body of water located south of China.
Oh, and decentralized food production feeding the world? We had that, thousands of years ago. It sucks when the vast majority of the world is toiling 7 days a week to grow just enough food to eat. That’s the only way to do it. Certainly you can’t support cities with local agriculture.
Neither organic nor locally produced food necessarily is better for the environment or less costly in terms of resources.
For example, while it might be possible to grow tomatoes in a greenhouse in Vancouver in the winter, it consumes a lot more in energy than growing them in southern california and trucking them up the coast.
Similarly, organic does actually have problems keeping soils fertile. The materials you have available don’t always have the right mix of ingredients to restore the nitrogen levels in the soil. So you have to leave land to forage more otfen, which means larger land areas and lower yields. A mix of applications of some organic methods combined with judicious application of inorganic fertilizers and occasional pesticide treatment seems likely to optimize long-term crop yields while minimizing inputs.
Wait, you mean factory farming arose for a reason beyond evul?
well, until the margins on energy needed to extract oil pan out, of course.
This goes beyond the “nonsense” level of the rest of your post into “not even wrong” territory.
You obviously have a handle on how inoculation works. How does a plant become resistant to Roundup, Mr. Einstein?
Um evolution
Huh? Bt is a protein that you can very easily engineer into plants that is toxic to plants. Kalata B1 is also a protein-like pesticide compound that might in the future be genetically encoded into plants.
I heard that Santorum, in announcing his Presidential runs, spoke strongly of the need for a firm response to E. coli transmission via fresh vegtables, proposing stiff penalties for vegetable producers who try to slide past tight regulations, but reserving the harshest punishments for those who try to grease the palms of health officials in countries who supply significant quantities of vegetables the the U.S. Santorum, famously fond of leeks, stated, “we must not accept that substandard processes in our agricultural trading partners’ systems could endanger our supply of healthy and satisfying vegetables such as carrots, parsnips, and cucumbers.”
I see what you did there.
Conspiracy kooks are always a hoot.
Back, and to the left. Back, and to the left.
Back, and to the left.
I came to confess, ProL. I was the second gunman on the grassy knoll.
ALLLLLLRIGHTYYYY THEN
Well, that explains a few things.
Nice game, pretty boy.
Ron — that kooky article is an incredible find. This `dead food’ meme is spreading, I think. By the way you mean `farm to fork’ not `form to fork’? Or do you?
Matt
i was especially pleased by the find. This is because I have some friends that occasionally throw up links to natural news on FB. Now I can just throw this link back with a, “you are fucking kidding me right?”
Matt: I just cut-and-pasted the email — fixed it now. Thanks. The article speaks for itself, alas.
…then you can force the entire population onto a diet of dead foods
Isn’t most everything we eat, dead? If they aren’t dead already, they will be after they hit you stomach.
It is good to eat foods containing certain micro-organisms. Maybe that is what they are on to? Just trying to be charitable. Someone being insane doesn’t automatically make them wrong about everything.
No, I think they are just using scary words because people are dumb. This food is dead, and it was grown using chemicals. Oh no!
I just dump a shitload of dihydrogen monoxide on my tomatos. Those chemicals sure make the plants grow well.
I’ve stopped boiling lobsters.
Dodging claws is fun!
Larry the Lobster endorses this message
My question: If they find that this came from an organic farm, are the Germans going to ban organic farming? After all, this E. coli strain has probably already killed about as many people as have died in nuclear reactor accidents.
I took a shit in Germany once…
German authorities should continue to slander and seize inventory until they put the right producer out of business.
^^THIS^^
Ah, Natural News. Take the wildest, most crazy conspiracy theories you can think of regarding either food or medical science. Chances are that Natural News has out-crazied your conspiracy theory by a wide margin.
Natural News is not an “environmentalist” website that promotes population control. Some of you guys got it all wrong.
Those not showing even the slightest amount of suspicion over this e. Coli outbreak demonstrate a little too much gullibility for my taste… especially considering how fast they blamed it on “organic” foods. The media and colleges are constantly bombarding students with this idea that “organic foods are dangerous”. Whole, raw, whatever… at the very least they want you to believe their lab mutations are “just as good”.
I’m just too reasonable to trust government that much.
Right, the “media and colleges” are constantly bombarding students that organic foods are dangerous. What’s the name of the fantasy world that you inhabit, super genius? If I sing “Imaginationland” can I come there too?
Andy Schlafly will be waiting there with open arms.
So will Steve Perry.
I agree. I spent two years studying plant biology before I switched to massage therapy, and I know those labs genetically engineer e.coli all the time. It’s the standard way to test a gene in isolation before you stick it in a plant.
You also know they use specifically engineered strains that don’t dump shigatoxins, right? With all your biology?
Labs that study shigatoxin, however, obviously use strains with it.
The article you linked from Natural News gives reasons why it seems likely this strain was bio-engineered. I was hoping for a counterpoint in your article but, alas, there is just insults and name-calling. This was less than informative and was, whether official or otherwise, simply part of the smear campaign against food. If you care to deny this, then provide actual evidence to back up your point.
“reasons that it seems likely” is not the same as evidence. Come back and talk to us when they actually have some real evidence to support their wild claims.
OMG! Thanks for pointing out this despicable “smear campaign against food!” And to think that I was just about to stop eating!
To your “point” about “denying” your assertion that this E. coli was engineered, please remember that it’s up to you to provide proof, not to makewild accusations against no one in particular, then expect others to attempt to refute–oh, why do I even bother.
Moon landing? What Moon landing?
lol
*sigh*
fucking evolution, how does it work?
You know, in a sane world, the left would be explaining to us how the EU’s government-mandated irradiation of fresh produce was a key public health measure protecting the unsuspecting from E. coli, and how the decision was too important to be left up to the market. In that world, libertarians would have to make the nuanced argument that freedom includes letting people make bad decisions for themselves, even if it kills them.
Instead, we’ve got a world where the EU has tied up irradiation with so many restrictions it’s effectively illegal, and the result is 22 people are dead and thousands are ill.
Hysterical fear of nuclear energy/radiation is, in that Bastiat “what is not seen” way, one of the biggest killers on the planet.
Humans are animals and not angels, and like every other animal on the planet, we survive by eating other living things. They should just get over it, and go scarf down a couple of big macs.
Haha, I love Natural News, it produced possibly one of the rage-worthy articles of all time:
http://www.naturalnews.com/028…..icine.html
What skeptics really believe, based on what he pulled out of his ass.
It’s doesn’t take a genius to realize that spreading tons of feces (aka organic fertilizer) on crops can lead to the spread of intestinal bacteria into the food supply.
a SWAT story you WON’T read on REASON… happened today
http://www.komonews.com/news/local/123227003.html
OLYMPIA — A 33-year-old Olympia police officer was wounded Monday morning while helping serve a warrant at a suspected drug house just north of Lacey.
The male officer was part of a multi-agency SWAT team who stormed a home near 70th Avenue and Johnson Point Road around 6:15 a.m., said Lt. Greg Elwin with the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office.
When officers went in to the home, an Olympia officer on point came face-to-face with a 38-year-old man with a gun, Elwin said. The gunman fired a shot and struck the officer.
“He was shot in the arm,” Elwin said. “(A) through-and-through injury with the bicep.”
A medic on the SWAT team immediately began treating the wounded officer, and the gunman immediately surrendered, Elwin said. No officers returned fire.
thats actually pretty amazing
That’s cool, I guess. But I’d really rather hear more about your producing career.
So someone kicked in the door of his home and he shot the guy. Upon seeing that he had fired at a cop, he surrendered immediately.
Do you want me to credit the cops for not spraying several magazines into the house in response? I mean, do you want me to praise the SWAT team for not murdering a private citizen in his own home?
See dunphy, you think this is a good thing. It’s not. The cop is lucky he wasn’t hurt more severely, and the resident of the house is damn lucky he didn’t get his ass hosed down with military weaponry for daring to resist as someone broke into his home.
There are no disclosures with this post.
Therefore, everything in it is suspect.
In related news, the Wa Po has a story on how ‘earth-friendly’ burials are growing in popularity =
http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..ml?hpid=z5
A range of burial options are considered green. People can forgo embalming or request nontoxic embalming fluid; buy a biodegradable container made from sustainable willow, wicker or bamboo, or even order up a simple shroud. The burial can take place on “natural burial grounds” where people are buried without markers on protected wildlife preserves. There’s even a company that incorporates cremated remains into a “reef ball” that provides habitat for fish.
As they say, the devil is in the details, and in this case, Satan apparently rides a Boogie Board =
Jamie Fox was studying environmental/marine science and philosophy at Salisbury University when he drowned while boogie boarding.
Yes, his family chose the ‘reef ball’ option for the kid, obviously.
I feel sorry for anyone who actually reads Natural News and believes it.
