The Kochtopus is back in the news today, after alt-journalism prankster Ian Murphy of the Buffalo Beast called controversial Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker pretending to be David Koch, and got 20 minutes of the governor's time. You can listen to the audio, read a partial transcript, and hear from Murphy over at Mother Jones. Longer transcript at the Beast if the website works.
For me the main takeaways were that A) Walker clearly wasn't personally familiar with Koch, B) he let most of the outrageous stuff bounce off him, sticking largely instead to the same kind of boilerplate you've heard from him on TV, with the main exception of C) this troubling exchange in which Walker says he "thought about" planting troublemakers among the protesters:
Koch: We'll back you any way we can. What we were thinking about the crowd was, uh, was planting some troublemakers.
Walker: You know, well, the only problem with that —because we thought about that. The problem—the, my only gut reaction to that is right now the lawmakers I've talked to have just completely had it with them, the public is not really fond of this…[explains that planting troublemakers may not work.] My only fear would be if there's a ruckus caused is that maybe the governor has to settle to solve all these problems…[something about '60s liberals.]….Let 'em protest all they want…Sooner or later the media stops finding it interesting.
Yes, the transcript is that bad.
A lot of the conversation consisted of this kind of awkwardness:
Koch: Goddamn right! We, uh, we sent, uh, Andrew Breitbart down there.
Walker: Yeah.
Koch: Yeah.
Walker: Good stuff.
Koch: He's our man, you know.
Walker: [blah about his press conferences, attacking Obama, and all the great press he's getting.]
Others were more impressed with the results than I was. Roger Ebert concluded, improbably, that "Now we know what chums people like Walker are on with the far-right Koch brothers." Then there was Michael Moore:
This phone call is the SMOKING GUN. U get 2 hear their plan 2 crush the middle class & take away your right 2 organize. #MadMove #Fascism
Uh, who is "they" in this formulation? Anyway, the stunt, coupled with fresh new Kochs-in-Wisconsin dot-connecting exercises from Mother Jones and The New York Times (do read Ira Stoll's rebuttal to the latter), made Wednesday the official "Koch-whore" day in the ongoing melodrama of Madison. Former Reasoner David Weigel, who is on the scene in Cheeseville, has a good piece over at Slate about all this. My favorite bits:
"I read the legislative summary of the Budget Repair Act," explained Janczy, "and saw the stuff in there about the giveaways for the power plants. I saw the Kochs' fingerprints on that."
She was talking about Section 16.896 of the bill, which empowers Gov. Scott Walker to "sell any state-owned heating, cooling, and power plant or may contract with a private entity for the operation of any such plant, with or without solicitation of bids." That section started to get attention on Monday; by this morning, Democrats in the state Assembly were using the floor time allotted to them in their quasi-filibuster to ask whether the Kochs were behind it, or interested in buying the plants.
Madison's liberal Capital Times newspaper got a flat denial of that claim. "We have no interest," said Philip Ellender, Koch Companies' president of government and public affairs, "in purchasing any of the state-owned power plants in Wisconsin and any allegations to the contrary are completely false."
I pointed this out to Janczy. "Well," she said, "they may say that, but I don't believe it."
And this:
Democrats in the state Assembly, who had been mentioning the Koch-Walker connections or the no-bid-power-plant theory throughout their debate, took to the floor on Wednesday to ask what Walker knew about Koch and when he knew him.
"These Koch brothers!" said a worried-sounding Rep. Gary Hebl. "These Koch brothers are talking to Gov. Walker!"
After Walker participated in a tense press conference dominated by questions about the Koch tapes, Democratic Rep. Brett Hulsey took questions and explained why the Koch conversation rattled Democrats while confirming their suspicions. The call was evidence of "pay for play."
"It was shocking to us," he said. "We now understand why [Walker] killed the train money, why he killed the wind development, why he killed $46 million of transit money. He's in the pocket of big oil interests."
I asked why this proved that these were things David Koch wanted.
"I'm not going to talk about a vast right-wing conspiracy like Mrs. Clinton," he said, laughing. "But I've seen this movie before."

Why would we EVER wipe out the middle class?!?!?!? They pay all the taxes to us. We'd have to thin our ranks in the 1st and 2nd castes if there were less of you people working so hard to pay us!!!!
That's what they say. Ever hear of Ed Koch? I live in NJ and that's how we, and most in NYC, pronounce "Koch". So, fuck them, and their goofy Midwestern accent.
Not only do I scoop Reason with this story -- once Mr. Welch is awakened to write it, we are treated to this nugget of hilarity as its "main takeaway":
Walker clearly wasn't personally familiar with Koch
Yeah, he just sat and gave a 20-minute status report to some random guy.
I didn't lose track of anything, you absolute moron. Holy shit, you are even more self-unaware than I thought. In a strange way, I'm impressed. You have reached new levels of idiocy.
No, he didn't. He could have meant "under his thumb" as "being owned by." Like the Rolling Stones song. As in what the whole implication of the quid pro quo, pay-for-play the left is insinuating about the no-bid utilities.
You equated the two in your own little head. Read it again. You want to get pwned again late night, you stupid little bitch?
Wait, the Left's problem with this is merely that Walker is familiar with Koch? I don't think so (and I'm not convinced they even are familiar, given that Walker didn't realize it was an imposter on the phone).
If he was that familiar with the guy, he wouldn't have been fooled by the impostor.
The worst you can say is that he thought guys that he knew were favorable to his cause were worth more time than the media, who are almost universally hostile to his cause.
But I'm sure that if the head of AFSCME calls one of the Wisconsin Democrats, they'll just leave them hanging for a few days, right?
I bet if Obama called you, you'd talk to him for 20 minutes. Doesn't mean your personally familiar with him.
If Obama called me, I'd give him hell over Gitmo, Wall Street, and his cheeseball corporate centrism, not provide a status report. Not even if he paid me $46K to get elected.

You sure you wouldn't be mainly bitterly weeping about his being a socialist, statist, communist, Big Gubmint tyrant? You sure you wouldn't be begging him to deregulate to the point that, oh, state governors are giving daily 20-minute status reports to their corporate handlers?
Before you answer, you should know: I do read Reason.com.
See, I think you'd probably spend most of the time crying like a baby your fantasies about how he's a socialist/statist/communist Big Gubmint tyrant. And with what time was left, you'd beg him to deregulate to the point that state governors were giving daily 20-minute status reports to their corporate handlers.

See, I think the majority here probably would spend most of the time shrieking stock Bircher fantasies about how he's a socialist/statist/communist Big Gubmint tyrant. And with what time was left, they'd beg him to deregulate to the point that state governors were giving daily 20-minute status reports to their corporate handlers.
Now that Orel has completely confused the roles of the caller and the callee in this story, we can safely ignore his concerns. Oh wait, we could have done that to begin with.
Which isn't a surprise. I realize I come to the "Koch"/Walker tape already knowing that he's a fake, but to me the caller's voice just screams "amateur comedian doing a character."
Funny. You people weren't talking this way when libertarians were attacking George W. Bush. You loved libertarians back then. You spoke about "liberaltarians" back then. Interesting how things changed once you guys took power.
What is it about TEAM RED and TEAM BLUE (and I suppose any partisans) that they must have their boogeymen? Why is it they can only seem to concentrate on one or two at a time? I mean, the proliferation of this Koch thing has absolutely astounded me. I figured it was a talking head/editorial writer obsession that would never filter down to the average TEAM BLUE Joe on the ground, but nope: it's everywhere. Same with Soros; I wouldn't have thought that your average reflexive TEAM RED Jane would really know his name, but now I bet they do.
"The Kochs are becoming the most important source of Republican/conservative funding, if the reports I read are true. They're a natural target."
Perhaps, but that's like saying they're a natural conspiracy theory.
The people who think we wouldn't care about our state governments squandering our money on bloated union benefits packages are like truthers and birthers.
They're worse than that! They're like the conspiracy theorists about shadow government, etc.
I'd say that it's partly because the Kochs have a corporation (TEAM BLUE dog whistle 1), and because libertarians (TEAM BLUE dog whistle 2) are the major object of TEAM BLUE hate right now. The fact that the latter is happening is merely a symptom of the fact that TEAM BLUE is too fucking stupid to understand even what libertarians are.
So libertarians are now the objects of scrutiny of a bunch of knuckledraggers who don't even know what they're scrutinizing libertarians for, but they know they hateses them.
What is strange to me is that liberals used to have some cynicism about gubermint power. Have you heard any liberal (save glen greenwald) challenge the serveillance state, police brutality, the fantastic number of prisoners in uh, US prisons, the protection of teachers at the expense of inner city children, and on and on?
What happened to code pink? You don't even hear any criticism of the too big to fail anymore. Indeed, they even seem to think maryjane is bad, bad, BAD!!!
They're like....they're like...republicans of 3 years ago!!!!
The strange thing is that they've had Rupert Murdoch as a bogeyman for quite some time. Of course, given how hostile FoxNews was toward the nascient Tea Party back in 08 and 09, it does make some sort of sense to switch bogeymen as the party at least visibly switches emphasis.
Thus my point about how they can only seem to concentrate on one boogeyman at a time. I'd give you my opinion of why they can't concentrate on more than one, but I imagine you know it already.
Libertarianism represents a great unknown to the apolitical masses and therefore can be branded whichever way the leftist talking heads want.
Depending on who is telling the story, Libertarians are heartless robber baron apologists who want to mutilate children in their soot-filled factories for 5 cents a day, or Libertarians are really psychotic, antisocial libertines who want to host sex and drug orgies on the well-manicured lawns of your gated communities, pile 50 drunks in a car, sideswipe a bus full of nuns, then practice target peeing on unsuspecting people before they shoot their latest fetish porno webcast.

I don't see why those would be mutually exclusive.
The Typical Libertarian is hated by conservatives because he wants the freedom to snort coke off a teenaged hookers ass while smoking pot and watching a movie full of boobies and cuss words in preparation for sodomizing his illegal immigrant housekeeper, Carlos. The Typical Libertarian also wants criminals, terrorists and Mexicans to roam freely about causing all manner of social chaos, and has no interest in forcing people to love Jesus Christ. The Typical Libertarian is a traitor to the GOP and America because he failed to support the war in Iraq, the PATRIOT Act, the Stimulus, and both Bush and McCain, despite the fact that both men once said something at a cocktail party about maybe possibly lowering taxes on some people some day.
The Typical Libertarian is hated by liberals because he is a crypto-archconservative who wants poor people to go without education, medical care, police protection, food, shelter, and oxygen. The Typical Libertarian spends his weekends running down endangered species in his monstrous, gas-guzzling SUV before stopping off to smoke a pack of cigarettes in a daycare. The Typical Libertarian wants the world to be run by unaccountable multinational conglomerates instead of unaccountable governments. The Typical Libertarian is a racist, sexist, profit-driven nihilist who failed to mark the ascendance of the Chosen One, and has never protested for Union rights nor worn a T-shirt with the word Darfur on it.
Despite clinging to a hopelessly unworkable, idealistic and marginal political philosophy, the Typical Libertarian has recently been discovered as the cause for the downfall of Western Civilization.
You forgot roads. Everyone talks about roads when they detract libertarians. But we never address it because where we're going, we don't need *lowers visor* roads...
I think the left feels more threatened by libertarians than by conservatives. Conservatives aren't likely to convert liberals but liberals agree with libertarians on social issues. If enough liberals began to reject the idea that the federal government could somehow save us all from poverty, the left might start having some problems.
Not sure about the social issues agreement... gun rights, food rights, and smoking rights are all social issues on which libertarians disagree (and there is a sizable minority of libertarians who disagree on gay marriage, abortion, and immigration).
I love it when people pull out the Nazi=National Socialist canard. It always reminds me of the old joke "How many legs does a sheep have if you call its tail a leg?" "Five?" "No, you idiot. Four. Calling a tail a leg doesn't make it a leg."
I mean, yeah, that was what they named themselves alright. But, then, the formal name of North Korea translates to the 'Democratic People's Republic of Korea'. You want to tell me that North Korea is a democracy? Go ahead. I'm waiting.
The difference would be that most libertarians and conservatives try to advance the agenda that they openly say they are trying to advance. Those on the left almost ALWAYS try to pretend they aren't rely leftists, and that anyone who says so is crazy/a racist/ paid off by Big Whatever.
American politics is Christianity for people who are too lazy to wake up early on Sundays. All political parties have a semi-mythical creation story, God figures that existed a long time ago when the world was a paradise, and a Devil figure who screwed everything up. This gives the congregation a Heaven that they'll get if they unwaveringly follow their leaders and ignore the opinions of everyone around them. And if their leaders screw up, they can blame it on the evil Devil figure as well as blame themselves for not believing and evangelizing enough. Which is also probably why we have two parties; 2 on 1 isn't fun if you're with the 2s and isn't fair if you're the 1.
Is it just me, or does anyone else think this is a non-story? Is there a law that says Walker shouldn't be talking to Koch? Is there anything that was said that sounds like something illegal is in the works?
Don't you get it, man? They're billionaires, who made their money with corporations, and they don't support Democrats! We can deal with any single one of those things - but not all three! That's our territory, bitches! Stop poaching!
Is there anything that was said that sounds like something illegal is in the works?
Well the part where he said he had thought about planting people in with the protesters was pretty shady, but that would have been true regardless f who he was talking to.
Because reason can be trusted to report honestly on a member of it's fucking board of trustees.
Just replace Walker with a Democrat saying "we thought about" putting troublemakers in the protests. Would you all just dismiss that, or would it be another scandal of the decade?
No, really, rectal: I want you to explain the lawyer comment. So we can all see how retarded your thought processes actually are. Think of it as giving us a rare glimpse into the mind of a lunatic.
Some how you do three times the blogwhorin while being only twice as annoying as Lonewacko. Good on you!
I hope you choke on your pappy's petrified pecker.
don't encourage her by clicking on the blog - unique hits are like crack to blogwhores, next thing you know you'll wind up with a pickled dick and your wallet will be stolen.
"No cause for concern people? As an Oklahoman I beg to differ. I don't recall aliens beaming up all the lunatics in this country in the past 10 years."
It's an established fact that Dem organizations were planting troublemakers in Tea Party rallies. Not saying they were thinking about it, but actually doing it.
Just replace Walker with a Democrat saying "we thought about" putting troublemakers in the protests. Would you all just dismiss that, or would it be another scandal of the decade?
Funny, it seems Team Blue put troublemakers in the midst of the Walker administration.
So fucking defensive. Everything's a liberal conspiracy to steal your money etc. etc. but when someone points out a DIRECT link between right-wing groups, libertarians, Republicans, and corporate interests with obvious financial incentives involved, it's like all on the level, obviously.
Because it isn't about where the money comes from, but what issues are on the table. Every breath wasted discussing "who's funding whom" is a moment that we aren't discussing the actual issue at hand. I have no problem with Soros. I don't even have a problem with GE. I just try to point out which ideas are bad.
Soooo... a prank caller is able to get through to Walker, he falls for the gag, and this points out a 'DIRECT' link between right-wing groups, corporate interests and Republicans.
How similar to scum Schumer's quote regarding scum Goldman Sachs statement that austerity measures 'COULD' cause a 2.5-3 % down turn in growth, to which Schumers states: it 'PROVES' that the austerity measures will lead to a great depression.
Wackos quoting theives with out any regard to truth, just raw power (something the left 'used' to be against I once thought, in error I have long since discovered)
Just as fresno dan points out in an earlier comment, funny how government power is only nefariuos when in 'certain' hands.
Some of us lesser mortals instead understand that government power in anyone's hands can be used for nefariuos ends. That was the concern of our brilliant founding fathers who set up a beautiful document to lead humans in the process of self-governing themselves instead of by rulers and kings. And the left has been tearing the crap out of that wonderful sentiment ever since.

They required permission to land and the property belongs to Libya-just like any airline's plane.

They are part of the EU-bet?
Most people have experienced talking on the phone with someone who you find boring/irritating/abrasive but don't want to piss off, and just trying to get rid of them by agreeing with (or at least not fierily condemning) whatever they say. Walker's response to the "plant" question reads exactly like such a moment. 90% of it is explaining why what the caller proposes is a bad idea, but in a diplomatic fashion.
In any case, if Walker were familiar with Koch, you would expect him to be able to tell that it wasn't Koch on the phone.
It does that to my posts, too. To everybody's that comments fairly consistently. I had to change rhetorical question marks to get around it the other day.
You're really confirming exactly what I thought of you in this thread. I thought it might be me for a second.
Why try to run away from a good thing? Walker should talk to Koch (the real one). And they should send agitators to kick liberal pussy ass. Democrats have proven time and again that they are fascists in waiting. They have no compunction with planning pretend outrages, and making up incredible lies for their media cocksuckers. Republicans should defintiely stoop to their level. They used to be great at it. What happened to them?
The Koch Bros. punched my grandmother in the face.
The Koch Bros. kicked my kitten.
The Koch Bros. drunk out of my milk carton and didn't leave me enough for cereal the next day.
The Koch Bros. borrowed my car and didn't fill up the tank.
The Koch Bros. had Paul McCartney killed and replaced...with themselves.
If it weren't for the Koch Bros., none of us would care about our governments squandering our money on bloated benefits packages for public employee unions--that much is certain.
The Koch Bros. invented time travel so they could make a donation to Hitler's campaign.
The Koch Bros. stole a handbag.
The Koch Bros. stole a car.
The Koch Bros. stole a baby.
The Koch Bros. shot a policeman, stole his helmet, went to the toilet in his helmet, mailed it to the policeman's grieving widow, then stole it again.
The Koch Bros. invented clam shell packaging.
The Koch Bros. don't cry at the end of Lassie.
The Koch Bros. were the editors of Cooks Source.
I didn't hear you all complaining when the democrats forced through Obamacare. All the republicans showed up to work and voted against what they knew would pass.
Actually, every single one of the Republicans filibustered the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, but they didn't have the numbers to hold it, so it passed 60-40 on December 24, 2009.
60-40. I guess that's "forcing" something through. Out of curiosity, what isn't "forcing" something through? 2:1? 3:1?
I mean, for Democrats to pass something, of course. Obviously, Republicans get to pass anything they want by majority vote with Dick Cheney as tiebreaker.
Barack Obama is going to go down in history as the Abraham Lincoln of gay rights, and the people who've spent two solid years badmouthing him for pursuing what will ultimately be his winning strategy will be coming up with some hi-larious explanations of how "the homophobe in chief" was actually forced into these positions by the awesome power of their protests.
Considering Lincoln originally wanted to make the slavery issue go away by sending blacks back to Africa, and only issued the Emancipation Proclamation when he was desperate for enthusiasm from his abolitionist base due to the war going badly...that's not a bad comparison, I guess.
"Barack Obama is going to go down in history as the Abraham Lincoln of gay rights,..."
Considering all the rotten things he's done to our economy? From ObamaCare to all the new financial regulation?
...if he goes down in history as the "Abraham Lincoln of Gay Rights", then that's probably about the best he can reasonably hope for.
I'm actually a supporter of the idea that gay people shouldn't be discriminated against by the government, but how much you want to bet Obama doesn't run his reelection campaign on that issue?
If anybody calls him the "Abraham Lincoln of Gay Rights" during the campaign? It'll be all the bible-thumpers in the South who hate his guts.
To emphasize again: focusing on whether or not the Koch brothers funded any idea is shallow and pointless. It's as ludicrous as when right-wing people dismiss an institution because Soros is behind it.
It wouldn't matter if Walker was really the Koch brothers in a particularly good disguise. If their ideas are so ridiculous then FUCKING ARGUE ABOUT THE IDEAS.
Focusing on the people "behind" ideas only demonstrates someone's intellectual vapidity.
"To emphasize again: focusing on whether or not the Koch brothers funded any idea is shallow and pointless."
Why don't you just admit that if it wasn't for the Koch Bros., you wouldn't care how much of your paycheck goes to pay for bloated benefits packages for government employee unions?
I have to congratulate our enemies on discovering the sinister role of American Ballet Theater and The Museum of Natural History in our plot to destroy America.
I thought our control of those propoaganda organs would remain a secret forever. Clearly, our enemies are smarter than we thought!!
"It was shocking to us," he said. "We now understand why [Walker] killed the train money, why he killed the wind development, why he killed $46 million of transit money. He's in the pocket of big oil interests.
So, he canceled your pet corporate welfare pockets because he is in the pocket of corporations? Leftism sure is Zen.
Is there a law that says Walker shouldn't be talking to Koch? Is there anything that was said that sounds like something illegal is in the works?
Just not seeing it....
The "troublemakers" comment is the only problem I saw. But, to me, the larger issue is...why does the governor of the state give 20 minutes to this guy? Doesn't he have work to do? What made this phone call important enough for him? This is an example of how money buys access to power in the most direct ways. Doesn't matter what was said...it is the automatic deference to the monied that Walker shows with this that will hurt his political capital moving forward.
I first read the transcript, and then listened to part of the conversation, and only then did it come clear to me. From a subtle change of tone, I think he caught on to the scam early on and treated it as an opportunity to be interviewed 'in the raw' from that point onward.
OK, so now merely talking to someone for 20 minutes constitutes "deference"? That's laughable. Have you been under the thumb of every person you've talked to for 20 minutes in your own life?
Not to mention that in the part of the conversation everyone's citing (the "troublemakers" part), Walker is DISAGREEING with Pseudo-Koch and explained why his idea was stupid. That's not deference where I come from.
Try something Tulpa.
See if YOU can get him to chat with you for a 20 minute phone call.
He took time out of his schedule because he thought the guy was a billionaire. Would he have done the same for just any other out of state citizen calling him?
This phone call is the SMOKING GUN. U get 2 hear their plan 2 crush the middle class & take away your right 2 organize. #MadMove #Fascism
Do you know what this means? This is the HOLY GRAIL!?! This is the final proof. It means nothing less than that after fifty odd years of being a total schmuck I am finally VINDICATED! It is that HUGE!!!
Well, the difference is that Soros sticks his head (and therefore his ass) and his money into many high profile political issues. It seems like the Kochs are business people with an interest in politics.
Whereas Soros seems like a former businessman who craves political power.
Didn't Soros donate money to CA's prop 19 last November? Does he even live in CA?
Soros also nearly singlehandedly funded Kerry's campaign, as far as I know.
I also don't remember hearing about French and other foreign governments indicting the Kochs.
I love Soros and the Koch Bros. so lets get some things straight:
The Kochs stick there heads in lots of high profile issues.
The Koch Bros just got to have a wee tiny bit of craving for political power don't ya think?
They don't live in Wisconsin (much to their credit)
I wish the Koch Bros. would have donated to Prop. 19.
Soros was the only donor to the Kerry campaign. Hell, he is Kerry.
And finally the Koch Bros. would grow more awesome in my eyes if the French indicted them - I don't care for what.
Soros is a rent seeking hedge fund. If you look at its top 10 holdings there's a lot of oil exploration and Monsanto. OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSS.
Good to know. DK (that's what I call him) called me up the other day for a 20-minute debriefing on my status, but after this debacle I was worried that I was being pranked.
So, does this mean that leftists are going to join Republicans in the call to defund PBS, since the Koch Brothers donate a metric shit-ton of money to them?
Here's a classic dilemma: You can go back in time, and assassinate two people in order to save millions. Your potential targets are Hitler, Stalin, or John Dewey (the father of our modern educational system). Which two do you pop? I know, it's a tough one...
Most people have experienced talking on the phone with someone who you find boring/irritating/abrasive but don't want to piss off, and just trying to get rid of them by agreeing with (or at least not fierily condemning) whatever they say.
Yes, but.
There's a popular-among-lefties idea that conservatives and libertarians always "fold" when they're "confronted," and their aversion to sudden shouting matches is proof that their (and all) non-BLUE! politics is a fragile, Rush-/Beck-/Kochtopus-built defensive patchwork slogan-shell around their repressed true (blue) minds?and that their politics itself, with all its talk of the "personal" and "private," is all about avoiding the deep inner BLUE!ness we all would openly share if not for the Rushbechtopus and its squiddy ideology of concealment.
(Kinda like Jim Jones said.)
So all non-blues should be bullied relentlessly, and publicly, especially on "inappropriate," not-political occasions?for their own mental health/salvation.
(Just like Jim Jones said.)
So whether Walker was assenting or deflecting by letting what "Koch" said slide, the letting-it-slide itself proves...everything.
If I go to a rally pretending to be someone I'm not, and get people to say outrageous things, that makes me a "plant" and it's an awful thing to do.
If I call someone up and pretend to be someone I'm not, and get them to say outrageous things, that makes me a "prankster" and it's a valuable public service.
See, the Koch brothers want to legalize drugs so people are too high to join the union, man! Then buy all the power plants and, like, sell us power! It's all about power, man! Suck it, Koch!
They probably just see the vast amount of money to be made in decriminalization... but I can't say I don't agree with them on that point.
Thing is, when you are that successful in business, you are always trying to maximize profits. Union busting = more profit. Drug decriminalization = huge potential profit.
Ha ha. Watch the corporate cocksucker glibertarians who have David Koch on their website's foundation's board desperately twist and turn to pretend they didn't just hear a 20-minute status report from Scott Walker to their guy.
Ha ha. Look at the funny fellators bang the backs of their heads on the underside of the boardroom table. Bonk! Bonk!
Ha ha. You don't know what incoherent means. Here are just a few examples of the pathetic dodging of the reality of a governor giving a 20-minute status report of his governance to a major corporate campaign contributor:
"Is there a law that says Walker shouldn't be talking to Koch?"
"To emphasize again: focusing on whether or not the Koch brothers funded any idea is shallow and pointless"
"From a subtle change of tone, I think he caught on to the scam early on"
Ha ha. Look at the parade of glibertarian corporate apologist turds limbo under the Reason board member's pole.
My reaction to all of this is that it's mostly insignificant, though I don't care much for talk of planting people in crowds. I know the crowds they were talking about are themselves full of plants from the other side, but two wrongs and all that.
On the other hand, I tend to think that Walker was just being tactful with who he thought was an important supporter of his party. Let's face it--some of these big names aren't always entirely normal and can have some wacky views.
It seems exceeding unlikely that the governor knew Koch at all, so he didn't know what to expect. Imagine a Democratic governor talking to some loony public figure from the left--say, Michael Moore or Oliver Stone. You can't just tell the celebrity that he's nuts, so you have to be diplomatically evasive. I imagine that's what happened here.
Of course, Walker is playing politics on this issue, regardless of whether there are other motivations (like repairing the fiscal house of cards), so I'm sure there are distasteful aspects to the whole business. Like exempting favored right-wing pubic unions, for instance.
As with your f----n' paid f----n' contract associate, f----n' Nicholas, I could put much more f----n' credibility into the f----n' blog posts that you had NOT f----n' typed while on your f----n' knees before a f----n' picture of the f----n' brotherly pair that f----n' deposits a f----n' paycheck in your f----n' offshore bank account.

Hah, I was wondering aloud to a friend whether you guys would come out and defend the Kochs when this prank call thing hit the media. I should have taken bets. Multiple articles! Jesus! The call wasn't even about Koch, it was about Walker. Relax, I don't think uncle moneybags is gonna shut down the magazine if you stroke a little less vigorously.
This phone call is the SMOKING GUN. U get 2 hear their plan 2 crush the middle class & take away your right 2 organize. #MadMove #Fascism
Was that really Michael Moore, or was it Prince pretending 2 B Michael Moore?
It was Fred Savage. Duh.
Why would we EVER wipe out the middle class?!?!?!? They pay all the taxes to us. We'd have to thin our ranks in the 1st and 2nd castes if there were less of you people working so hard to pay us!!!!
http://youareproperty.blogspot.....ystem.html
Why would we EVER wipe out the middle class?!?!?!? They pay all the taxes to us.
Because getting money from the BenBernank is much easier.
You better watch out for that queer looking little son of yours; he'll have a Koch in his mouth before you can say "Jack Robinson."
A bit mangled but the spirit is true.
I think you captured the spirit of the thing, Reg
Poor, deluded souls.
The Koch-haters, I mean.
No I'm don't!
um, it's pronounced COOK.
um, no it isn't.
It's "coke."
That's what they say. Ever hear of Ed Koch? I live in NJ and that's how we, and most in NYC, pronounce "Koch". So, fuck them, and their goofy Midwestern accent.
It's pronounced "fook".
Ha ha.
Ha ha.
And as we all know, if a politician talks to someone for 20 minutes, they must be completely under that person's thumb.
And as we all know, if a politician talks to someone for 20 minutes, they must be completely under that person's thumb.
Ha ha. You just equated "being under someone's thumb" with "familiar with".

I didn't lose track of anything, you absolute moron
Ha ha. Look at you pretend Welch and Tulpa didn't attempt to distance Walker from Koch.
Look at the funny pretend-man! It's like he can't read the plain, clear English!
Ha ha.
You keep saying things as if by merely saying them, you make them true. Are you a wizard?!? A retarded wizard?
At least you're safe from the zombies.
Ha ha. Thanks to all of those abdominal bending and flexing exercises, I'm finally limber enough to Ebert my own perky li'l mini-swizzle all day long!

Something good may be happening.
Is Oral ever going to make sense when he posts?
It would be kind of hard to talk around the blowjob, but I'm sure you would do your best.

Yeah, right.
You sure you wouldn't be mainly bitterly weeping about his being a socialist, statist, communist, Big Gubmint tyrant? You sure you wouldn't be begging him to deregulate to the point that, oh, state governors are giving daily 20-minute status reports to their corporate handlers?

Now that Orel has completely confused the roles of the caller and the callee in this story, we can safely ignore his concerns. Oh wait, we could have done that to begin with.
Yeah, sure. Right after you wiped your mouth.
Apparently, dude's voice doesn't sound anything like Koch's.
Indeed it doesn't.
Which isn't a surprise. I realize I come to the "Koch"/Walker tape already knowing that he's a fake, but to me the caller's voice just screams "amateur comedian doing a character."
Maybe it was Breitbart? On drugs? REALLY GOOD drugs?

Funny. You people weren't talking this way when libertarians were attacking George W. Bush. You loved libertarians back then. You spoke about "liberaltarians" back then. Interesting how things changed once you guys took power.
Orel, do you really believe that if Walker is in the Koch's pocket he would be fooled by some prankster pretending to be one of them.
What this shows is that Walker (like Sara Palin with the bogus Sarko call) don't screen this shit awfully well.

Picklefactory!
Style Point: It is spelled with a K.
"Picklefaktory!"
Fucking tribalism. What a bunch of Kochnuggets.
What's strange is that the left is going after a couple of libertarians, not some rabid conservative pushing far right policies. What's behind that?
The Kochs are becoming the most important source of Republican/conservative funding, if the reports I read are true. They're a natural target.
They're making fools of themselves.
Bildeberg!
Because there's only room for one boogeyman on the disco floor?
It's Wednesday Night Fever!
Too many dicks on the dance floor.
We can't have enough Flight of the Conchords references. Seriously.
Probably because OH SOMETHING SHINY!

I don't see why those would be mutually exclusive.

you forgot the (tm)(c) after the word "Typical Libertarian". 🙂
You forgot roads. Everyone talks about roads when they detract libertarians. But we never address it because where we're going, we don't need *lowers visor* roads...
you say it as if those things were bad...
I think the left feels more threatened by libertarians than by conservatives. Conservatives aren't likely to convert liberals but liberals agree with libertarians on social issues. If enough liberals began to reject the idea that the federal government could somehow save us all from poverty, the left might start having some problems.
Not sure about the social issues agreement... gun rights, food rights, and smoking rights are all social issues on which libertarians disagree (and there is a sizable minority of libertarians who disagree on gay marriage, abortion, and immigration).
...on which libertarians disagree with liberals...
Which is exactly what you'd say if a Democrat had been caught saying exactly the same things to George Soros. Yes I'm so sure.
Oh, Tony, you know I'm smarter than that. I talk. They listen.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Will the Pope ever shit in the woods?
John Paul II was quite the outdoorsman actually.
Sorry, can't see a pope dumpin' in the forest.
Yeah, that's why he's devoted himself to left wing causes.
Nazis = National Socialists
Penance?
Just not seeing it....
Why did they cut out the context of that in the transcript? Is there a better transcript somewhere?
Can you describe what context might exist in which that would not be shady?
It is shady, but then again, some of the protesters were planted by Obama, so it's shady against shady.
I'm not saying that makes it right, just saying a little perspective matters here.
Because reason can be trusted to report honestly on a member of it's fucking board of trustees.
Just replace Walker with a Democrat saying "we thought about" putting troublemakers in the protests. Would you all just dismiss that, or would it be another scandal of the decade?

Retarded man, I wonder if you could point out to me which part of this story was reporting ANYTHING about Koch?
Then don't fucking read it, Tony.
You and the two Johns should get together for a pity party; you all can bitch about how the evil media is keeping your political parties down.
And people wonder why anybody would want to be part of a marginal political movement.
Hey tony, here is a DIRECT link to more leftist hypocrisy.

In any case, if Walker were familiar with Koch, you would expect him to be able to tell that it wasn't Koch on the phone.
This is really the nut of the whole thing. Walker is tight with Koch!!11!!one!!1
But he didn't know him when he was on the phone.
If the next presidential campaign becomes a battle between public employee unions and the taxpayers?
Then the Tea Party is gonna double in size.
If the public employee unions are trying to run their campaign to save themselves based on crank phone calls?
Then who and how much the Koch Bros. give their money to is gonna be the least of the public employee unions' problems.

Agreed. I was merrily being facetious and trying to guess the next set of headlines coming out about them from the detractors.
Now, I must check my closet to be sure there are no Koch Bros. before I go to bed. Those two guys are everywhere.
Now they know you're looking for them!
I personally would be thrilled that the government is spending our nation into oblivion, but then the Koch Brothers forced me to care about it.
The Koch Bros. invented time travel so they could make a donation to Hitler's campaign.
The Koch Bros. stole a handbag.
The Koch Bros. stole a car.
The Koch Bros. stole a baby.
The Koch Bros. shot a policeman, stole his helmet, went to the toilet in his helmet, mailed it to the policeman's grieving widow, then stole it again.
The Koch Bros. invented clam shell packaging.
The Koch Bros. don't cry at the end of Lassie.
The Koch Bros. were the editors of Cooks Source.
"The Koch Bros. invented clam shell packaging."
That's it, I'm canceling my sub.
Compared to the worst US president. Ouch.
The only redeeming quality of Soros is his work against the drug war.
Period.
Politics is not about intellectual rigor, it's about winning. Guilt-by-association may be a logical fallacy, but it works.
Oh shit, are we talking about politics?!
Just for the record then, what people think is way more important than how they vote.
"To emphasize again: focusing on whether or not the Koch brothers funded any idea is shallow and pointless."
Why don't you just admit that if it wasn't for the Koch Bros., you wouldn't care how much of your paycheck goes to pay for bloated benefits packages for government employee unions?
FUCKING ARGUE ABOUT THE IDEAS
Ideas are hard. Ad hominem is easy.
Ideas are hard.
So's my Koch.
I lol'd at the "Independence Institute".
Why does this keep happening to me? Why did I pick number twenty-five?
You can add Kochie Roberts to the list of journalists that are in the pocket of Koch Industries.
I'm surprised she doesn't contribute to this Hit and Run monstrosity joke of a website place.

I have to congratulate our enemies on discovering the sinister role of American Ballet Theater and The Museum of Natural History in our plot to destroy America.
I thought our control of those propoaganda organs would remain a secret forever. Clearly, our enemies are smarter than we thought!!
Of course. Do you think the ballet theater wants its ballerinas to unionize?
They already are.
When did Matt share an elevator ride with Bill Kristol?
"It was shocking to us," he said. "We now understand why [Walker] killed the train money, why he killed the wind development, why he killed $46 million of transit money. He's in the pocket of big oil interests.
So, he canceled your pet corporate welfare pockets because he is in the pocket of corporations? Leftism sure is Zen.
I got a whole in me project!
Trains use diesel, right?
I would love to see the Koch brothers give like 20 million dollars to Obama and his organizations in 2012 just as a piece of performance art.
Doesn't matter what was said...it is the automatic deference to the monied that Walker shows with this that will hurt his political capital moving forward.
imho.
So, yeah, deference.
It's the TRUE CROSS! It's the SHROUD OF TURIN!
Soros vs. Koch.
Plus, the Kochs have ALL the right enemies.
You know how much liberals just love Monsanto
Good to know. DK (that's what I call him) called me up the other day for a 20-minute debriefing on my status, but after this debacle I was worried that I was being pranked.
What a relief.
That's nothing. I've got a direct line to Mario any time I want.
So, does this mean that leftists are going to join Republicans in the call to defund PBS, since the Koch Brothers donate a metric shit-ton of money to them?
That 'Boycott Koch Industries' pic in the post is example #1 why I stopped being a fucking Catholic and converted to Judaism.
Say what you want about us Jews but we'll never tell you not to buy cleaning products. And our penmanship is a lot better.
you can pick any religion but you die a Catholic
Cleanliness is next to Godliness.
I am going to buy all the products in that list. However, the Mennonites get the best tax breaks.
i like money .

Slightly off-topic, but germaine.
Here's a classic dilemma: You can go back in time, and assassinate two people in order to save millions. Your potential targets are Hitler, Stalin, or John Dewey (the father of our modern educational system). Which two do you pop? I know, it's a tough one...
Well, definitely Dewey. Stalin and Hitler are pretty much a coin flip.
So whether Walker was assenting or deflecting by letting what "Koch" said slide, the letting-it-slide itself proves...everything.
thanks.
Democrats are scared sh!tless now that the Republicans have their own George Soros. Open wallet and an agenda.
To summarize:
If I go to a rally pretending to be someone I'm not, and get people to say outrageous things, that makes me a "plant" and it's an awful thing to do.
If I call someone up and pretend to be someone I'm not, and get them to say outrageous things, that makes me a "prankster" and it's a valuable public service.
Depends whose playbook you read.
It's okay when our side does it!
See, the Koch brothers want to legalize drugs so people are too high to join the union, man! Then buy all the power plants and, like, sell us power! It's all about power, man! Suck it, Koch!
OK, I'm late to the party, but I LOVE that chart! It has everything except Nick's jacket, which must have set the Kochs back about 300 large.
And what's the deal with Roger Ebert? [Insert clumsy, tasteless, irrelevant throat cancer joke here.]
MIT is part of the Kochtopus? Excellent!
Liberals don't like satire.

I like the post from supermario:
The liberal mind is an amazing thing.
Obviously, that's fake.
not enough misspelled words and poor grammar to be real...
Andrew Sullivan's stunning insight: "It also confirms every left-wing conspiracy theorist on the power of the Koch brothers."
WTF?
Bonk! Bonk!
Careful - don't bite down, now!
Ha ha.
Ha ha. Watch the homoerotically charged troll wax incoherent.
Ha ha.
incoherent
Ha ha.
Do you know Orel Hershiser?
From a subtle change of tone, I think he caught on to the scam early on
Come om Orel, that one was more than pathetic dodging 😉
American Enterprise Institute and Reason and Cato? What are they really up to?
If you think the Kochtopus is bad, wait until we summon Kochthulhu!
Matthew,
As with your paid contract associate....
Excuse me, I forgot.
This, sadly, is not one of those f----n' instances.
Please get the f--- up off of your f----n' knees. You're f----n' embarrassing yourself.
Gotta remember your f----n' penchant for f----n' f--- bombs in almost every f----n' thing you f----n' write, say, or do.
