Reason.tv: 5 Rules for Coping with Tragedy
Tragedies like the mass shooting in Tucson at a public event organized by Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) are horrifying enough on their own, but they also have a way of bringing out the worst in reporters and politicians.
In fact, knee-jerk reactions often leave us with misconceptions and bad policies that stick around long after the healing has begun.
And so Reason.tv presents: 5 Rules for Coping with Tragedy

Oh, I did post today. Your poll is up there Helle; remember to Rock the Vote
Peter King should follow the advice from video clip. What an ass.
Unfortunately the people who are exploiting this for political advantage are doing so precisely because the "heat of the moment" gives them advantage.
The Week is offering ideas as well!!

Wait, there was a mass shooting in Tucson? When?
But there was a mass shooting in both Tuscan and Tuscon.
Right after the two gays got married.
Here's a good example of what not to do in the wake of tragedy...

Seriously, what an opportunistic piece of trash. I've read a lot of callous and self serving statements made in the past few days, but asking for money just about takes the cake in it's sheer lack of class. Go take a flying fuck at a rolling doughnut, Jesse.
How the Tea Party is raising funds because of the leftist attacks on them based off of the Tuscon shooting.

I can't believe I just linked to Kos, but yeah, they are doing it
I'm trying to find the part where the Tea Party gets to vote to increase its absurdly high rate of compensation. Could you please point it out for me? I know that The Right Does It Too is a fun game to play when you're trying to win the sympathies of your dumb little progressive friends, but sometimes it just makes you sound like a jackass.
Wow.
Where is the part where the Arizona shooting occurred anywhere near a district office?
You got that right.
Rarely are hypocrisy and the emptiness of political bickering more evident than during a time like this. From one side, it's "People like you are responsible, because of [various convoluted connections to the perpetrator], and if we had our way things like this wouldn't happen." And in response, it's always "The actions of a few lunatics in no way reflects our ideology, and you should be ashamed of the way you're exploiting a trajedy for political gain."
And then something else happens and the sides are reversed, but the rhetoric remains the same, because apparently nobody learned anything from the previous trajedy.
What is there to learn from tragedy?
Human beings are capable of some crazy, awful shit.
I thought that was history . . . oh, I see your point.
Well, from this one I've learned that tragedy is spelled with a "g," so there's that.
I guess what I mean by "nobody learned anything" is that nobody seems to learn (or remember) that these are almost always relatively isolated incidents, and it's not appropriate to broadly point to supporters of a cause or adherents to an ideology as the underlying reason.
If you're in a crowd and someone pulls a gun for no reason, tackle his ass and put him on the ground.
If you're in a crowd, in a state with liberal carry laws, and you have nothing to carry, and someone pulls a gun for no reason, you're a helplss idiot limited to attempting to tackle his ass and put him on the ground.
Besides the appalling, if expected (it worked with Oklahoma City!), political opportunism that followed this insanity, the media also showed that it's perfectly willing to accept information without appropriate verification in the rush to be "First!" No way anyone at the hospital said she was dead, as she was apparently conscious and definitely not dead after being shot, so what did they rely on while running around saying she was dead? Some random blog? That homeless guy with the radio voice?
