D.I.Y. Domestic Violence Shelters
After budget cuts doomed a domestic violence shelter in Grass Valley, California, its director
turned to a method not used in Grass Valley since the 1970s: she asked good Samaritans to open their homes, creating a type of underground railroad for those in need.
Since the shelter closed, a handful of "safe houses" have opened in the area. One sits at the end of a long gravel road, surrounded by pear and apple orchards. Like the others, the homeowner has no real crisis training and receives no payment….Her guests who need support are told to call the local domestic violence hotline. She's also aware of how dangerous what she's doing really is since 911 is her only backup.

Get a shotgun. Seriously. Get several.
And a couple of big dogs.
Are you insane? She calls 911, cops show up and of course kill the dogs. Think before you write!
If you have dogs and a shotgun, you never need to call 9-11.
Honestly, you mean to tell me gunning up, leaking their location, and kneecapping the fucks who slapped'em around hasn't dawned on ANY of these women?
If they were bright and resourceful they wouldn't be with that kind of dirtbag in the first place.
Get a shotgun. Seriously. Get several.
Get one per "guest" and teach them how to use it.
I heard about this yesterday and also thought that a firearm or two would help a lot. But remember, this is Cali.
You can keep a shotgun in your home in California.

Ftfy.
So, Jesse, are you turning your home into a shelter too?
If you need a place to crash, there are better ways of asking than the comment thread.
Agreed.
Who hit you, Alan? Who?!?
Steve Smith.
I guess you could call it "hitting." Not super-accurate if you ask me.
STEVE SMITH NOT HIT ALAN. STEVE SMITH GENTLE LIKE LAMB WITH ALAN WHEN HE RAPE HIM. STEVE HAS MOVIE SCRIPT IN THE WORKS AND WANTS ALAN TO MAKE NICE REVIEW WHEN IT COMES OUT.
Alan never responds. This must be very frustrating for you.
STOP SPELLING MY NAME WRONG!
Gary: "Show me on the doll where the bad man touched you."
Girl: "What bad man?"
Gary, pointing at the girl's lawyer: "That bad man!"
California should require expensive certifications before a person could open his home to the needy.
With lots of comprehensive inspections, too.
Hey, don't forget us!
Who do you think is going to do the inspections?
Hint: portal to portal, baby.
No woman of mine is gonna stay in an unlicensed shelter!
Just imagine an entire house full of women who DON"T FUCKING LISTEN!
+1
winner!
It's pretty funny in the sick, tragic way that these kinds of things can be.
But sensitive, nineties guys aren't allowed to notice.
Yep, I was thinking ; " Does the local zoning office know about this?"
There has to be a fee, a permit and an inspection. Then she has to add a wheelchair ramp, a sprinkler system and get a restaurant license if she intends to feed these women.
I hope she doesn't try to feed them Happy Meals.
In most places a major source of food for such shelters is Hunters for the Hungry. But I don't guess that will play very PC in California either.
The local zoning office doesn't need to know. And anyone who snitches is going to need a shelter of their own.
I'm pretty sure this is a Federal requirement. I've been involved with a battered women's shelter in Arkansas, and one of the licensing requirements was they had to have a licensed social worker on staff. There used to be three in the county they served, now they're the only one. I don't know if it's because of the licensing problems, but I wouldn't be surprised.
the homeowner has no real crisis training
So she's probably less likely to shoot a handcuffed and subdued "suspect" than your average BART cop?
Oh, no.
"the homeowner has no real crisis training"
Probably a pro. With no liberal psycho-babble "crisis training" to get in the way, it'll be actual caring folks who sincerely want to help.
Nah. If you aren't trained, licensed, and certified by the Union of Concerned Whatevers you obviously are just in this to choke a bitch.
This is a superb idea, one that I could see my wife and I participating in. And the only reason we'd need 911 would be to come fetch the abusive boyfriend's lifeless corpse.
Discrimination!
Well, I could go around shooting everyone. Let me check the federal regulations on that.
You're a cop?
winner +1
Get real. If I were a cop, I'da known that already.
Nah, if you were a cop you wouldn't care about the regulations, and would just arrest anyone trying to document you breaking them.
Can't help but wonder how big Grass Valley's domestic violence problem is....?
It's all about percentages.
Cash, grass, or ass. Nobody lives for free.
Was is it with all you libertarian men wanting it in your asses?
Governor Schwarzenegger has to be commended for making a very wise, sound decision in restoring funding for battered women shelters. Without a shelter for a battered woman to go to, she could be killed or severely beaten. This is a very important point that Governor Schwarzenegger recognized. Most men are bigger than women. This is a reverse decision for Governor Schwarzenegger and this decision shows that the Governor has a flexible mind to do what is right. Well done! Governor Arnold A. Schwarzenegger! You have saved the lives of many battered women. If a husband has plans to murder his wife, beware, the "Terminator will be Back."
How 'bout that S.E. Cupp? Hubba-hubba!
aka CC Cup.
Imaging that! People doing something our the goodness of their hearts/personal charity are able to perform some of the same functions as unionized state workers who may or may not give a shit about the people needing help. Who could have predicted that?
Not everyone is a cold-hearted libertarian
BUT THESE PEOPLE ARENT REGULATED!!!
Nothing good can come from individuals not licensed by the government.
Does this remind anyone else of dog rescues?
We ended up keeping our "foster" rescue.
Lots do.
I have friends who do it. They have two of their own and have kept 1 rescue, so I guess they have 3 of their own.
They have 8 puppies as of a few days ago. They are okay for now, but their house isnt big enough for 11 pyrenees. To be honest, it isnt big enough for 3.
Great Moments in Stupidity
How did this happen? I have an M.B.A. from a well-known Eastern business school.
Well, there's your problem.
Hey! Hey wait there just one second!
How DARE Reason use the expression "underground railroad" in this context!
You are making light of the suffering caused by slavery when you use this metaphor!
These women aren't slaves! How dare you cheapen the memory of millions of enslaved African-Americans by engaging in this false, false, horrible moral equivalence!
......................
Oh wait I got confused for a second and thought I was that douchebag who doesn't understand Rand who keeps changing his name.
There are so many layers in this statement, it's hard to know where to begin.
Yes it really is dangerous, esp. if the police show up while she is watering her lawn with a spray-handled garden hose.
I bet the old underground railroad helping the runaway slaves would have been sooo much better with the proper regulations, therapists and security. Harriet Tubman was a threat to those people's wellbeing I tell you.
Tubman wasn't a licensed home-care worker.
Nor was she a licensed railroad engineer.
Nor was she a licensed railroad engineer.
I can tell you from personal experience these people need to get guns and learn how to use them. I did after my wife's dickhead father literally tried to hunt her down after she left home.
