Now We See the Origin of the Expression
From a story about the the Dallas ballot initiative that legalized beer and wine sales by grocery and convenience stores throughout the city (emphasis added):
Opponents say they plan to file a lawsuit challenging the vote.
"The problem is, here the city failed to ensure there were enough petition signatures to put it on the ballot, but they went ahead and called the election anyway," said attorney Andy Seigel, who represents a coalition of liquor stores and South Dallas pastors.
It's not quite literally a Baptist-and-bootlegger coalition, but it is as close as we'll get barring the reintroduction of alcohol prohibition.

Now we see the violence inherent in the system.
Rent seekers and fun punishers, together again.
Progressivism: a nagging suspicion that someone somewhere is having fun.
Pastors aren’t usually what I think of as “progressive”, but to each his own. I hope we don’t go down the retarded Red vs. Blue road of labeling everything we don’t like as “progressive”.
how progressive of you
No, you’re a progressive, you fucking prog.
You don’t need to use drugs to have fun. Unless you are drug free you don’t know what it means to live. Freedom is drug free. I think alcohol should be illegal, as should tobacco and caffeine. All illegal drugs should stay that way. Straight edge is the ONLY way to live. Anyone who drinks, smokes uses drugs, even coffee, or has premarital sex needs to be beaten up to teach them to be edge. I respect your choices, but if I think you are about to use drugs or have sex I have no problem beating you to stop it.
lolwut?
Is he related to the Siegel’s liquor stores?
Doesn’t the fact that it was able to pass suggest that it should have been on the ballot?
An astonishingly reasonable suggestion.
You would think so.
The whole point of the signatures should just be to keep absurd things off the ballot that would waste money.
I like the British system for running for MP, where you pay a (reasonable) deposit, and get it back if you get at least 5%.
That’s the disturbing thing abougt the story — not the acknowledgment of the pastor-liquor store alliance, but the apparent assertion that a private party has a legitimate interest in procedurally nullifying a referendum on that basis.
I have trouble believing that a judge would want to nullify a referendum on that basis. Unless he owns a liquor store or wants to marry one.
Even if they succeed, after the people living in the formerly dry places get a taste of the convenience, there is no way they’ll allow reversal.
this isn’t being led by some religious group, it’s being led by a alcohol retailer! he’s just using these preachers to protect his market share.
Next up…The Coalition of Pro-life Christians and Back-alley Abortion Doctors to sue Planned Parenthood.
Not surprising, same thing happened with medical marijuana stores and Prop 19.
