Some Encouraging News from the Field for Prop 19
From the Yes on 19 campaign itself, their on-the-ground troops are reporting "youth turnout is so high that the polling location at San Diego State University has completely run out of provisional ballots. We're hearing that it will take 3 or 4 more hours to re-stock the ballots there."
Well, let's hope this has some bearing on the outcome, though past guarantees are no performance of future results, and all that.

So what you're saying is that the provisional ballots on college campuses were deliberately understocked by anti-19 forces?
it depends on what the meaning of so high is
*Ba dum tss*
do provisional ballots even count? i thought they were just to make the most annoying non-registered voters go away happy?
the provisional ballot is not counted until 7-10 days after election so their vote does not affect the calling of the states to different candidates.
Great. Almost more annoying than Prop 19 failing is having to listen for the next several months to all the YES-on-19 provisional ballot voters whining about how their votes were not counted.
They probably forgot to bring them.
Why the fuck do they need provisional ballots? That tells me none of them are registered. And none of their votes will count anyway.
Does that mean that this thread doesn't count?
the provisional ballot is not counted until 7-10 days after election so their vote does not affect the calling of the states to different candidates.
I am a registered voter and needed a provisional ballot today because my polling place lost my information. Why don't you educate yourself instead of spewing bullshit?
Maybe they lost your information or maybe you just never registered. Sure, they just happened to lose your information but no one else's.
yeah, that sounds likely.
who says they lost no one else's? sounds all too likely...
I had to vote a provisional for the AZ primary because my early ballot never showed up. There are lots of reasons why people end up having to vote provisional ballots, but the likely explanation around SDSU is that most of them probably were not registered. I don't think California has same day registration, either.
Dumbass, when they run out of regular ballots they use provisional ballots -_-
No - see my link below. They ran out of *envelopes*, not ballots. The polling workers are writing the info that normally goes on the envelopes on a piece of paper and stapling it to the ballot until they have envelopes.
Rolling the provisional ballots ruins them.
Damn things won't stay lit, either.
Troops of youth? You'd think a Nazi paid for it.
California, if you don't pass prop 19, you are New Jersey to me.
Hay, bah fong goo, ya jamoke.
Exactly right. It's one thing for me to rant about government trampling my rights. What really pisses me off is when the electorate itself passes a sales tax increase, or when they tell their leaders, "DON'T TRUST ME WITH POT. KEEP IT ILLEGAL!"
What really pisses me off is when the electorate itself passes a sales tax increase
You do realize that Prop. 19 allows for a tax on marijuana sales, don't you?
My slogan for Proposition 19 (inspired by another article title on here):
"Winners use drugs!"
If young people are going to turn out in droves for anything, this would be one of those things. Man, I hope they actually are and it passes. What a win that would be.
I hope it does too. I want to watch the feds have a temper tantrum.
I've mentioned before that I believe the feds will try to do something about it by striking forcfully on a few select targets. But they will just come across looking like jack-booted thugs.
I want to see it pass. And then watch the Obama DOJ try to fight it. Lets put an end once and for all either party is better than the other on the Drug war.
Reasonable people don't believe it. The rest are too involved with team gamemanship.
me three - I really hope for passage. One thing I don't understand is why the polls showed Prop 19 passing and then NOT passing. What's up with that? C'mon California, let's show the country how it's done. Screw AG Holder and all the other conservative politicians.
My nephew in California is apparently going to vote yes on 19 and leave everything else blank. I hope they all do that.
What a terrific idea. My compliments to your nephew!
Last year I met a few old friends, class of 1975, and one of them reminded us how we used to say, when we're in charge, we're gonna make pot legal. Instead, my generation turned into the biggest "just say NO", zero tolerance, fun for me but none for thee assholes. Boy do I hope the young folks today finally do what we woosed out on.
Usually it's people looking to place blame for a life that didn't turn out like they hoped. I could have done so much better if I wasn't such a pothead back in the day. I don't want my kids to be like that.
Is that about right?
Actually, with one disastrous exception, my gang all turned out fine. I think the boomer parents believe they can prevent their kids from doing the same damn things they did themselves growing up. 'cause you know, we boomers are special.
I'm not talking about disastrous, just better than what they got. They may be doing fine, but believe they could have done better.
And yes, an attempt to prevent them from doing the same things.
I surely hope we are not counting on the "youth turnout" to push Prop. 19 over the edge...
the provisional ballot is not counted until 7-10 days after election so their vote does not affect the calling of the states to different candidates.
And the "calling" of states for this or that is an act with no official standing or consequences.
So why in the world are you so hung up on it?
First polls close in 45 minutes! Wolf Blitzer is getting a woody!
The first state to close is Kentucky, so Aqua Buddha should be pleased that his loyal follower shall soon be declared a United States Senator elect.
I outed myself at work today. When asked, I told them I hope 19 passes. I'm worried this will mean I'll get another "random" drug test, but I'll survive. People shouldn't have to live with that threat over their heads if they are fully functional, productive employees. C'mon 19, move us in the right direction.
Threadjack: Dumb fuck of the day award.
I was forwarded this video this morning by the NJLP. It has gone viral.

Do you think that Tim Lincecum winning the World Series for the Giants last night helps the pro-Prop 19 vote?
I suspect Tim was high when he was pulled in as a reliever to game 6 against Philly. What was the manager thinking?
Keep in mind that this is a University. That means that there are a lot of students from other places who can legally vote, but are (currently) in the wrong location, because they registered at home, and now they are in school. They would receive provisional ballots.
If this was happening at regular precincts, I'd be more in agreement with the negative assessments above.
This article has got my hopes up, "very high".
If Prop 19 does not pass The Wine Common Sewer will not be forgiven.
Hear that Mike?!?!
NO FORGIVENESS!!!
What did TWC do?
But seriously, folks. I've always considered the illegality of drugs to be the most important libertarian issue. It's a breeding ground for growth of the state, for abusing citizens' rights, for the simple interjection of the government into personal choice, and for the increase of police and all the harm they're capable of. God, I hope prop 19 passes. It will have an effect much larger than to give a few west coast stoners peace of mind.
If nothing else, Prop. 19 will enshrine in cement the state's right to tax and regulate agricultural products, with the people's blessing. Win!
What Libertarian said.
Hey Sarcasmo, so keeping people in cages where they can be raped and brutalized for having a plant is worse than taxing and regulating it? Yeah, real glad you're fighting for freedom there.
raped and brutalized for having a plant
That happens for simple possession in California? Wow, I need to keep up. Thanks, BP!
~80,000 arrest last year in CA.
CA - Cultivation - Any amount (exception for patients or caregivers): felony 16 - 36 months.
Yeah, you fucking do need to keep up, guy.
Most Californian pot criminals get off with a hand-slap for simple possession, not that your "raped and brutalized" hyperbole is not entertaining in its over-the-topness.
I stated - from my first post - I was referring to people with plants, not dime bags. If you get caught with several plants, even if they're only for your own use, you face a very different situation, including the very, very real risk of prison time.
As far as my "hyperbolic" comments are concerned, I'd tell you to chat with some of those who have gone through that prison system, except I suspect they probably don't want to talk about their experiences, especially to a dismissive prick like yourself.
the very, very real risk of prison time
Which must necessarily result in anal rape? Just to recap: "people in cages where they can be raped and brutalized for having a plant."
Would you like this opportunity to walk back that bit of hyperbole? Or do all or most convicted marijuana growers in California get raped in prison? I'd need a citation, if it isn't too inconvenient.
I have no idea how many people in prison for marijuana get raped (BTW, I also mentioned getting the shit kicked out of them, but you seem less interested in that) in prison. Frankly, if the number is not zero, it is too high. I don't think studies have been done for the very reason I mentioned - I can't imagine those who have been through it are eager, or even willing, to discuss their experiences.
But even if they only served a couple (relatively) peaceful years in a box, that's still less important to you than being inconvenienced with a tax, so you've already set your standards of freedom.
So you admit to making up the rape and brutalization thing? That's good enough for me. Enjoy your evening.
It's not just hyperbole asshole. God I hope that happens to you.
You're a humanitarian, then. Note that I have never advocated or condoned sexual violence.
Please, don't feed the trolls.
Sorry jasno, you're right.
No, you just denied a widely known fact, that sexual violence is prevalent in the prison system.
Here you go, asshole: one estimate is 43 in 1,000 sexual assaults. That's for a 6 months period, meaning the sexual assault rate is nearly 10% annually.
And guess what? Prop 19 does NOTHING for those that are currently incarcerated.
Read the reasons why Prop 19 isn't the best way to legalization and why we should wait until 2012 for a much better bill that is being proposed by people deep inside the movement, not corporate interests. And actually read it before you give me the played out line "the dealers, growers, and dispensaries just want to keep all the money". That is not what the pro-pot opposition to 19 is all about. If you actually care about your rights and don't want Monsanto to be the only pot grower in the game in 20 years read on.

But seriously, folks. I've always considered the illegality of drugs to be the most important libertarian issue.
I don't think that this can be emphasised enough. Medical marijuana is not the issue. The issue is, do the Powers That Be have the power to tell The People what they can and cannot put into their bodies? If there are compromises to this very fact then there are compromises on whether or not we own our bodies.

They just throw out the provisional ballots anyway.
all of your questions about provisional ballots answered:
http://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/elections_provisional.htm
Its too bad that the city of San Diego has already banned the sales of marijuana in the city limits (even if its legal they can still ban sales) oh well not my problem.
Have a link for that?
I just voted for the US Marijuana Party's candidate for Senate against Pat Leahy!
DOUBLE WIN BITCHES!!!!!
Prop19 even if it passes wont ever go into effect.
remember the majority of californians voted to ban gay marriage... it was voted on twice and both times overwhelming majority voted yes to ban.
1 judge overturned it
same will happen if prop 19 passes
people have no say so anymore over their government.
on what basis would P19 be overturned? I understand cynicism, but logic still applies.
SUPREMUSSY KLAUSE!!!!!1!!!!1!1!!!!
Just like SANTUH KLAUSE, that won't fly.
I'm hoping that it passes because, as someone put it, to cause a Category 5 Constitutional storm. I'm hoping that this issue is a landmark in how much power the feds have. I would really like it if a judge put aside this vote, it might arouse the public to pitchforks and torches.

Revolution
Unfortunately the student vote mock elections only had 51% voting in favor of 19.
If 19 can barely win in our schools why the fuck do we think it will win among the general electorate.
Or maybe they just figure it's easier to get at school when it's illegal and they don't want to change that.
So all the college kids failed to register properly. Cool.
Correction: SDSU polling stations ran out of ENVELOPES for the provisional ballots, not ballots.
http://www.signonsandiego.com/.....hly-polls/
If it helps, I wrote in "Proposition Nineteen" for PA state representative on the ballot today. Damned thing didn't have any numbers on the keyboard.
According to HuffPo;
7:05 PM ET Rand Paul Wins Kentucky Senate SeatRepublican Rand Paul, a tea party favorite, has been elected to the Senate from Kentucky in his first run for office. The son of libertarian congressman Ron Paul defeated Democrat Jack Conway.
Even though I filled out a change of address months ago, I had to vote provisionally because I recently moved and they didn't have my info at the polling place. So, yeah there are good and normal reasons for provisional ballots.
When I lived in San Diego, I voted at San Diego state. There are lots of old people that vote there. Doesn't necessarily mean young people are showing up.
Hey, everyone. I'm a communications specialist with the County of San Diego. We just want to let you all know that no voters were turned away today at SDSU because they ran low of provisional ballot envelopes --- not ballots. We temporarily wrote down the necessary information to keep with the ballots until the additional envelopes arrived.
Call the ACLU. That sounds like something that is not supposed to happen. The time frame they gave can't be legal.
For all of you who have undying loyalty to Prop 19 (as I did until recently) you should read a well reasoned argument against Prop 19 given by pro-legalization supporters. This would mean waiting until 2012, but it would provide a much better bill that will more fully protect the rights of users and growers.

Look all the pot heads in favor of this prop are either not registered, or they probably over slept or simply forgot it was the 2nd. Legalizing Weed is going to kill the small independant grower and allow the drug cartels to set up dummy corporations in California's central valley. Arrest for weed will go down but human trafficing will go up as they force in illegals to work their fields with our American dollars going to support narco terrorism. The closet grower cannot compete with machines that can roll 10,000 joints a minute. But thats o.k. don't listen to me because all of this rhetoric sounds a little right wing for liberal minded individuals. I am not a Republican nor a Democrate, I served my beloved country in operation Iraqi freedom, I am just an American concerned about staying an American and living an American dream.
Right on man.
I agree that most of the pro 19 folks don't seem to know the details about the argument against 19 that is coming from the inside.
Check out the counter initiative that will be on the 2012 ballot here:
