Can You Smell What Obama's Cooking?
Why the president's new stimulus won't work
You may recall Barack Obama claiming that the original stimulus plan didn't need any more tax cuts or "piecemeal" measures. To suggest so was to engage in "politics as usual." And trust me; you don't want to be caught going there.
And today? You know what, America? You look as if you're ready for some piecemeal measures and a fake tax cut!
No doubt it came as a shock to many of you that weatherizing windows couldn't get a $14 trillion economy cooking again. But if an $800 billion infusion of government and union bailouts failed to spur any decent economic growth, then how is a new "piecemeal" $50 billion stimulus going to work out?
Media reports tell me this is more complex. The president has devised an exhilarating new plan that will not only "jump-start" job creation but also fund and rebuild the "crumbling" infrastructure of the United States in brand-new ways.
Have you noticed that the infrastructure always is "crumbling" in news stories and presidential speeches—if less regularly in the real world. To many Democrats, "crumbling" means we're not subsidizing smart grids and high-speed rail projects fast enough.
For those of you who drive, though, a recent Reason Foundation study measures the condition and cost-effectiveness of roads—including deficient bridges, urban traffic congestion, fatality rates, pavement condition, etc.—and finds that roads haven't been in better shape at any time in the past 19 years.
Then again, free market nihilists always are daydreaming about bridges collapsing on innocent Americans—if at all possible, poor and disabled Americans.
We should concede that the highway system has been mismanaged by government and that it always could use more efficient funding. But creating a system wherein Washington dictates spending dollars is hardly a brilliant new plan. It's the same plan this administration has for funding public schools, student loans, mortgages, health insurance, and energy—among other knickknacks—which is to say, centrally and with progressive ethical strings tightly attached.
Speaking of which, today it's expected that Obama will announce a proposal to permanently extend the business research and development tax credit. Not a new tax cut, mind you, but an acceleration of one that exists. That seems helpful. (No, seriously.)
Tax cuts for small businesses are always morally acceptable. Small businesses are innocuous coffee shops. Big business is chemical spills. They don't deserve anything. Tax cuts for small businesses help florists, whereas "capital gains" cuts help hedge fund managers, who should be drawn and quartered, not rewarded.
During Labor Day weekend, I caught a number of Democratic candidates calling themselves tax cutters in ads. Yet nearly all of the tax cuts Americans have seen the past year and a half advance some liberal moral or social good. The overriding goal of the stimuli and tax breaks—from the things we build to the jobs we save to the tax credits we get—is to pick economic winners, steer us in the right direction, and wheedle citizens to be good boys and girls.
To offer comprehensive, amoral cuts would be to admit ideological defeat. To allow them to work would mean a long-term disaster for Obama and the type of Democrats who now inhabit Congress.
This president never would surrender to such indignity.

All I can smell is the mess he and Congress made on the economy. Time to rub their noses in it.
Caption?
"Got your money."
Obama pointing to previous administration
"You smelled it...you dealt it"
Wow. I would have expected to see a "Y'all niggas be postin in a troll thread," or "You Mad."
H&R is losing it's edge.
Maybe they could call this stimulus SBD. At least then we will know once and for all who owns it.
I wanted to thank you for this great read!! I definitely enjoying every little bit of it smile I have you bookmarked to check out new stuff you post.
Smeels like more of the SOS.
Stimulus? My ass. While they'll use this to claim that they're "doing something" to help the economy, 98% of the motivation behind this bill is to get as much money to their friends as possible before they lose the House and maybe the Senate.
The bottom line is that the RRA was an excuse to get every Senator and Representative the projects they've been wanting for years.
The bottom line is that the RRA was an excuse to get every Senator and Representative the projects they've been wanting for years.
WORLD TO END, WOMEN AND MINORITIES HARDEST HIT
Smeels...smells what the hell.
I agree with the sentiment but this is a remarkably useless rant rather than informative. It doesn't begin to address the "why" at all. very dissapointing.
harsanyi, chapman and stossel write columns for newspapers. not sure why people think they're going to get some long and involved article from them.
I'd like to take a politician to a race track and ask him to pick winners.
Then I'd bet on the other horses.
It wouldn't work. They'd just pass laws mandating every other horse be required to carry a weight-disadvantaged individual.
That's roughly how Congressional investors beat the market every year.
Jockey change in the 10th race at Congressional Park, Boehner in for Pelosi. No change in the morning line odds. All horses to wear blinders.
I'd still bet on Toyota or KIA before I'd bet on ZombieGM.
LOL...
There should be a law against using really small really light people as jockeys unless of course the horse only has three legs or something.
My stump speech on this issue:
I would like to leave the world of horse racing a better place than what it is today. Today, too many of the fastest horses have an unfair advantage in the race. Why is it that the fastest horse also happens to have the smallest lightest jockey, this is not a fair race by any standard and it is immoral and cruel to the other horses and their jockeys. That is why if I become president, I will push for a reasonable Jockey Equity Act to protect investors in the horse race from unfair competitive advantages. This way regular middle class americans wont look down at their ticket and suddenly see that they lost their fortune because the horse they bet on was not fast enough to keep up with the powerful and greedy super horses.
Shouldn't the original $800 billion have actually stimulated something first before we call this "another" stimulus?
It did seem to stimulate a lot of lobbyists.
Ah yes, but for the lobbyists...
Am I not stimulating?
AM I NOT STIMULATING!?!
I lol'd!
You are so stimulating, my liege! Please allow me the honor of paying more tribute to the crown!!!
LOL
+100
My liege please, I beg that you grant me stimulus. My projects are green and although 98% of the people who will end up paying for my project will never ever benefit from it I swear by God that it is the greenest of all projects and worthy of stimulus.
Ohh... I feel dirty.
I actually had a friend forward me an article about the "crumbling" infrastructure and how Obama was finally going to make it right. You know with the dearth of road construction over the last decade and all.
In the world of some people shit simply doesn't compute.
Yes, it crumbling because at least three times a year they repave a twenty mile stretch of the same road over and over again rather than finding something more durable.
This makes perfect sense to me. And will we need all new signs explaining which projects are part of the new 50b stimulus? If they are smart, they can just name this bill the same as the last bill and then they dont need to change the signs, but I am not going to hold my breath.
How about unlimited tax cuts for all business costs and economy stimulating activity. Under my plan, all businesses would be able to use all the profits which would otherwise be sent to the IRS for use in R&D...or advertising...or new hires...or payroll for current employees...or employee health insurance...or energy costs...or charitible donations...or new store fronts...or whatever they choose to do with it.
Added bonus: The cost of accountants should plummet due to the market being flooded with former IRS workers.
You fool, that means politicians won't be deciding where to spend the money. Can't have that!
I'll call it the "Legislative Enforcement Act for the Verification of Expenses Undertaken in Substantial Trade Hospitable Engagements to Fix Unemployment Circumstances by Key Allocation of Lucritive Opportunities to Needy Entrepreneurs" Bill.
Or for short, The L.E.A.V.E.U.S.T.H.E.F.U.C.K.A.L.O.N.E. Bill
You have to pass it to find out what's in it.
Can Meth count on your vote?
Ahh, but who will protect spotted owls! Surely you are not advocating the abolishmant of the EPA! Who will protect the Earth from chemicals and invisible gasses!
Why won't they spend more on bullet trains? I WANT THEM TO SPEND MORE ON BULLET TRAINS! I'LL STAMP MY FEET AND SCREAM AND POUT UNTIL THEY AGREE TO SUBSIDIZE THE FORM OF TRANSPORTATION THAT I PREFER!
Btw, libertarians are childish.
I liberal friend of mine keeps on suggesting that bullet trains are, in fact, the way to the future, because you know China has them and they cut commuting times down. How that would really move this country forward, I have no idea.
China cut "commuting" times down by forcing laborers to live in shithouse squalor just above their designated factory. Fucking bullet train my ass.
Coming from a "libertarian" who supports massive subsidies for forms of transportation HE supports.
The cognative dissonance you guys have on this matter is mind-blowing.
TEH EXTERNALITIES!!!!!!
Oh, and rich people suck.
And what is your libertarian answer to externalities?
To stick your head up your butt and pretend they don't exist.
My answer to externalities is hooray!! At least when I remember not to take them for granted.
Seeing as I benefit hugely from them every day.
Subsidized transportation has fucked up America's infrastructure and land use patterns from the start- beginning with railroad land grants, then highways, then air travel.
We are always going to have "subsidized" transportation systems. So you may as well grow up and have an intelligent discussion about what kind of subsidized system is best, rather than defending the absurd status quo.
You don't have a fucking clue.
As to why you go bonkers for a filthy, wasteful, utterly subsidized form of transit, but hate others because they are subsidized to about the same degree? You are right, I have no clue.
When have I once said I preferred any form of subsidized transportation? You don't have a fucking clue, as to how inefficient subsidies have made all modes, and have actually particularly distorted the market towards highways more than what might have been.
Now, if you would just get it around your pretty little head that the government cannot nor will not get out of the transportation infrastructure business, and decide to have an adult conversation about what kind of transporation systems we should be building, we might be getting somewhere.
Yes, every form of transit subsidized, taxed, regulated, and bureaucratized...and they always will be. It is only a question of how we will do this.
"every form of transit subsidized, taxed, regulated, and bureaucratized...and they always will be."
Remind me, who is defending the status quo?
You.
Now, what kind of transportation system should we build?
A tax credit is not a tax cut. A tax cut reduces taxes permanently and leaves it to the citizen, or the business, to decide how to spend or invest the money they keep. A tax credit is an attempt to channel spending into areas that the government wants us to spend in. And consider this...
What is a small business such as a florist or coffee shop going to do with a "research and development" tax credit? Or what a small law firm like mine is going to do with a credit for purchasing heavy equipment -- install an automobile assembly line in our office? For most small businesses, these "credits" would be wholly illusory.
Maybe that is the point.
A tax credit will target money to be spent IN THIS COUNTRY.A tax cut...you can take that money and invest in chinese electric cars.Im assuming you would like to see the Us make it out of this collapse.
The government manipulating the market with subsidies and tax "credits" won't do much of anything to grow the economy- although for a short period of time it may or may not look like it does. What it will really do is tilt resources toward planners' favored goals, creating a bubble, and lead us to the next collapse. Just like housing "stimulus" the last time around.
When we are trading with countries who dont Allow our products access to their markets but you want ours to be fully open.Right got it.You want US citizens to be slaves? A protective tariff is the opposite of free trade no?And free trade is anathama to the american system. What the founders were fighting against. What do you think the tea party was about?East India Tea Company and free trade.
The tea party was against taxation. Specifically, an excise tax that benefited the British East India Company in a market where competition was regulated. The participants of the tea party were in favor of free trade.
The founders were fighting against free trade, huh?
For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:
Do you know what that line is from?
@Fatty - +100 for historic relevancy
Gee and hoe did the East India company the first real corporation get so powerful?
So called Free trade.
"Free trade " leads to monopolies and control over natural resources.
What did the founders have to say about corporations and banks?
The real Boston Tea Party was a protest against huge corporate tax cuts for the British East India Company, the largest trans-national corporation then in existence. This corporate tax cut threatened to decimate small Colonial businesses by helping the BEIC pull a Wal-Mart against small entrepreneurial tea shops, and individuals began a revolt that kicked-off a series of events that ended in the creation of our country.
The opposite of todays teabaggers who work for corporate interests and people like the Koch brothers.
I think you need to actually read history the next time your teacher asks you to read it. Looking up "Boston Tea Party" in the dictionary isnt really going to get you the whole picture.
Anyway, Colonel_Angus summed it up nicely:
"The tea party was against taxation. Specifically, an excise tax that benefited the British East India Company in a market where competition was regulated. The participants of the tea party were in favor of free trade."
Please note the sentence regarding the "regulated" competition. Ponder that for as long as it needs to stew (could be forever) and then come back and explain how "regulated" competition, which is what we have today in spades is in any way free.
Gee and hoe did the East India company the first real corporation get so powerful?Without regulation you get monopolies.
So called Free trade.

No, read your history book. The English government made the British East India Company into a monopoly and was frequently granted special monopoly powers by the British government.
Government actually has but one role in a free market and that is to PREVENT monopolies, not form them.
Government regulation more often than not favor the biggest business, not necessarily on purpose, but because the big businesses are often the only ones able to survive the added costs and burdens of regulation.
If you own a farm stand and the government passes a law that says that all fruits sold by anyone must be organic, then how easy do you think it will be to suddenly "go organic" if you have limited assets and resources to make this switch. How difficult do you think it would be for some mega-farm to do the same thing with their huge bankroll and an army of workers to do the work needed to make the change.
In a free market smaller businesses can use their small size as an advantage. While large companies can grow through their economies of scale, smaller businesses can be more nimble and change quickly according to market demand. If you over regulate business, small business have to use more of their money and manpower to deal with regulations instead of using them to take advantage of their small size to capture untapped markets as they emerge. Large companies are not totally free from the burdens of over regulation either. While large companies can make money capturing large segments of a market, they cannot grow very fast because their expenses are very high so small innovations need more time in the market to generate a return. Adding unnecessary regulatory burdens adds yet more costs for that company to overcome making it more difficult to actually make money.
Government actually has but one role in a free market and that is to PREVENT monopolies, not form them.
I agree about the place for the government to prevent monopolies.Thats not a free market.
I also believe in regulation. We need it.Especially now.I dont want to be drinking poison tap water,or have babies dying from tainted formula or heaven forbid a huge gulf oil spill.Oppsss we have that.Maybe because we dont regulate since the regulators are bought off with BJs and coke onlt to go off and become lobbiests when they leave?
It wasnt always like that.
Regulation does not make people do the right thing. Bernie Madoff was a Registered Principal with FINRA, one of the regulatory organizations that regulate the financial industry. As a registered Principal, Bernie had to take a test annually and prove he understands various business ethics principles as well as prove an understanding of new or updated regulations. This process is known as Continuing Education. Do you think all of the regulation did anything to prevent him from defrauding people? For nefarious dealers, regulation is at best a bump in the road, at worst, it is a way for them to gain the trust of customers without ever doing anything worthy of trust.
When you invest money, or buy a car, or buy a home, or eat at a restaurant, you trust that they will deal fairly with you because you know or believe that regulators are looking over their shoulder. I am not saying that regulation is bad, but it is not the answer to any of our problems. We already have laws against theft, fraud, endangerment, murder etc. . . If someone sells a product that kills or harms someone, that person will be held accountable for the harm they caused. In complex financial dealings, if you blindly trust a dealer because he is regulated, then you are putting yourself at risk because the the regulators are not looking out for your interests, they are looking at a bigger picture. Regulators rarely if ever audit individual transactions unless those individual transactions throw up a red flag. If the dealer doesnt want a transaction audited, they will make sure it doesn't throw up a red flag. Regulation just makes business more expensive and it shuts out small business -- competition that would keep bigger players in check.
I am not saying that there shouldn't be any sort of oversight, but rational oversight is needed, not arbitrary rules. One way to have rational oversight is to create consumer ratings services like the BBB, but more of them. If you could go to an "Angies List" for every kind of service or product, you could make your own decisions about how trustworthy they are. If a company could sell any product they wanted, rather then having to conform to a regulation, then you can choose whats best for you even if it is a bad choice, but YOU need to do your own homework and make your own decisions and if you get shafted, then you go after the nefarious dealer that burned you. Bernie could tell people how his investment strategy works and anybody that wants in can get in, but if they are smart, they can go to a consumer group to find out what these people are doing and how they really do business. If Bernie pays off, you win, if not, then you have the right to go after him and then his books would be opened and the truth revealed.
My point is, you can never really trust anyone regardless of regulation. Regulation has become a replacement for the concept of "buyer beware" few people do their homework, but instead simply trust that the government regulators are doing their job. Even if the regulators are doing their job, they will not necessarily prevent fraud from happening because they cant see everything all the time. If dealers can do what they want and you can do what you want, you can find a match to your needs through other consumers like you, rather than a one size fits all regulatory paradigm. The framework of regulation is that it tries to address specific concerns before they happen. Instead, why not have regulations that react to customer complaints, that way, if a dealer does something I dont like then I can challenge them, but if I like the services or goods provided, then why should I care if they are following regulation. Its like pot. Pot is illegal but who cares what I do with my money but me. If I want to spend my money on pot then that is for me to decide.
Regarding gulf oil spill, poison water, tainted formula, nobody selling these things wants these bad things to happen unless they are totally insane. These companies know that if one bottle of baby formula kills or harms one baby, they are fucked, therefore they have a profit motive to do the right thing. But if you regulate a product and say that it has to meet certain standards, then the company has to spend more money on arbitrary regulations than on finding better ways to ensure quality control. Every company I have worked for had a customer first philosophy because they know that if they fuck over their customers the customers will fuck them over in turn. Bad things will always happen, there will always be spills, poisonings, and product failures because nothing and nobody is perfect. In all the years there have been wells in the gulf, how many of them failed this badly? BP does not want to lose one drop of oil from these wells because it is worth money.
I assume you know how much of our FEDERAL debt is owned by China. I am sure buying Chinese cars is not as big a deal. And who cares anyway. If they make a better car at a better price then buy it.
It cant be helped if dumbass auto unions dont understand basic economics, otherwise they would know that forcing the hand that feeds you to feed you more than any other company feeds it employees is not a viable long term business model.
Name one country with a strong middle class without strong unions.Good luck!!
See Germany for how it works.
Yes, the American middle class shrank in recent years. . . many of them move into the upper class. The ones that moved into the lower class were cut from Union jobs at auto plants and other manufacturing sectors have moved their businesses to cheaper locals like Mexico or Asia. This isnt happening at Toyota plants in America because they are non-union. DESPITE having serious safety issues, TOYOTA is STILL GROWING FASTER THAN FORD (the Best of the big 3).
You want to see a growing middle class. Look at INDIA. Since 1990, they have adopted more and more free market principals and their real GDP growth is over 5X more than the United States and Germany.
The United States economy is suffering because of the increased burdens on the INDUSTRIAL sectors. These heavily unionized sectors are bleeding jobs and these workers lack the skills they need to shift into the expanding SERVICES sectors of the economy which are not as heavily unionized.
Exactly what do you think will happen once these upside down PUBLIC SECTOR UNION PENSION plans collapse and suddenly need to be bailed out? Do you think the economy will be BETTER or WORSE when these pensions explode in our face?
Nobody is moving to Germany to become a member of their wonderful middle class, in fact they are leaving Germany their population is not growing, it is shrinking, this is not a good sign if you think they have such a great economy. People RUN to countries with a strong economy. Both India and the United States have positive population growth. Why do you think people from Mexico are coming over the border? Its because NON-Union farms hire them to harvest fucking watermelons and although they get paid under the table, they still do better here than in Mexico.
Yes and India has strong unions.
And nobody is moving to Germany? Are you kidding? They have quite a population of non German workers because like most western countries they arent reproducing enough to replace them.Ever been there?Lot of people from all over.Nice fast trains too.Because thats what first world countries do.Build things.
The Japanese, Germans, French are all developed countries with expensive social security programs. How is it that they are able to sell high-margin, high priced capital and consumer goods to the Chinese? In addition, Japan runs a trade surplus with China.
They all have strong unions who care about the competivness of their country and keeping jobs at home.
Meanwhile back in the states we created ZERO jobs the last decade..ZERO!!
And the ones we had ?..Over 40% were in the financial sector.36% were in the housing sector fueled by the bubble.Thats not an economy.Thats an accident waiting to happen.
This comment is pending approval and won't be displayed until it is approved.
Our country has had no real trade policy other than trading our jobs ,technology and infrustructure to the cheating chinese in exchange for lead toys and poison food. And bush's dad ,uncle ,and brother all work for China...huh.
cooinkydink?
India's growth is happening despite the unions, not because of them. The Trade Unions in India have been around for over a century, yet the majority of the growth in that country started after the government started its free market push and austerity programs, this is why many of the unions in India have been lashing out in recent years.
Regarding Germany, you are right about the population growth issue. After recent immigration reforms in Germany, there are certainly more immigrants coming in to work, but for most part these immigrants are from poorer European countries who are taking advantage of their compliance with the Eurozone immigration policies. I dont know if this is good or bad, but Germany is one of the strongest economies in Europe and so it is natural that it would attract poorer Europeans. Immigration from outside the Eurozone is still limited to high skill labor for most part and this particular needle isnt moving as fast. One of the main reasons why Germany has such a strong economy relative to the rest of Europe is because of the Reunification of Germany. When the wall came down, there was a resurgence in free market principals and an economic boom ensued. Germany has been riding this booms coat tails for decades and benefiting locally because of it. Globally, Germany is strong, but stagnant. This is not to say America is doing much better. America isnt adding jobs because like I said before, they are bleeding heavily unionized jobs to third world countries, In some respects, this is to be expected because the standard of living and therefore the cost of business is cheaper, but we are making this worse by forcing businesses to pay a premium for American workers.
Unions had a place in this country, but they only happened because there were too many quasi monopolies that came up because of crony capitalism which is different than pure capitalism which regulates itself by allowing for competition. More competition in an industry makes employers honest because employees can just go to another competitor for a better wage or working condition, this happens all the time in non-union workplaces. I work for an insurance company in the greater New York area. The company I work for has the highest employee retention rate in the industry because they are so good to their employees. These employees could easily move to any number of competitors but instead they stay here because they appreciate what the company does for them to keep them there.
And for other small businesses, they are both tremendously useful. Like the business I work at.
Hence the term "picking economic winners and losers".
There are business tax cuts that would benefit all businesses; large, small, and in-between.
But hey, as long as some business benefits, that's OK...
I am perfectly happy with this. Why aren't you?
Oh, because you LIKE watching the Walmartization of America. Clearly, strip malls and big boxes are the height of humanity!
I encourage any business that will benefit from the current tax cuts and credits to take advantage of them.
However, I would much rather see Government taxation treat all business the same.
There is no moral justification for the handing out of favors to one particular business or the other just because some politician can pass a tax cut/credit and wants to give it a special favor.
As for "Walmartization"? I actually like the fact that many things that were considered luxury goods just 20 or 30 years ago are available to the masses for cheap prices.
"Big Boxes" and "Strip Malls" have done more to level the social playing field in this country than any Government program.
Cheap plastic crap that breaks in a few months, then sits in a landfill for eternity = luxury!
Only in Libertopia!
And the government should indeed play favorites: businesses which provide positive externalities should be favored, and those that produce negative externalities should be taxed, regulated, or banned.
If you had made it past the first couple of chapters of your Econ 101 book, you would have read the simple proof that markets under-supply R&D, even in the presence of patents. This is precisely why such activity should be subsidized.
Wow, glad to know that I was arguing from "Econ 101"...
I was actually arguing from a position of Freedom. You know one of those ideals the country was founded upon.
As long as a business isn't engaging in fraud, theft, or force to make money, then it should be allowed to do so Free from the oppressive hand of Government.
Also, for many people "cheap plastic crap" does equal luxury. But hey, that's another one of those "Freedom" issues about making your own life choices and not having someone else decide what is worth your hard earned money.
BTW, you speak of positive and negative "externalities"...who makes those decisions? Who exactly decides what outcomes are positive and what are negative?
Yeah, the "freedom" to virtually forced to pay $400/month for each person in your family over 16, just so they can get ANYWHERE. The freedom to drive along endless strip malls and McMansions.
Please explain how our Strip Mall Paradise creates more "freedom" than, say, Sweden or Japan.
Explain to me how the "Strip Mall Paradise" does not create more freedom than your cited examples.
What you have described as evidence is one lifestyle among many that can be chosen in this country.
There are places you can chose to live in this country that resemble the ultra-urban environments of Japan and Sweden with community based stores and restaurants, mass and public transit, and you will never have to drive or own a car.
Yet we also have communities that are spread out and depend on having a vehicle. Where houses are plenty, but places of business are few and far between.
All of these communities exist within the borders of our "Strip Mall Paradise" and living in any of them is voluntary.
That is what I call Freedom. Is it "more" free than Sweden or Japan? Most likely since there is more diversity in this country and more places to find a community that fits your choices than in those two countries.
I like how you have to put the word "freedom" in scare quotes when talking about a voluntary choice. (ie providing all members of a family of driving age with a vehicle).
Yet Force being applied by Governments, such as Sweden and Japan, in the form of taxation, which is not voluntary, to pay for methods of transit, doesn't seem to bother you.
What does really seem to bother you, is that some people make choices that you don't like, ie driving cars.
+oodles
You are utterly wrong, on two points.
1: You can live the stripmall lifestyle in Japan or Sweden if you want to. Such places exist there.
2: Here in the US, I am Forced by Government, in the the form of Taxation, which is not voluntary, to pay for methods of Transportation. If you think the road system comes anywhere close to covering its costs with fuel and excise taxes, you are simply data ignorant. Go study the DOT budget (both your state and federal) and get back to me when you have cured yourself of this issue.
1) I never stated that you could not live that style of life in either country. I simply stated that you had far more choices in this country, thus most likely more Freedom.
2) Nothing to be "cured" of. I understand that all forms of transit are subsidized at some level and haven't stated otherwise. I simply pointed out the absurdity of comparing a voluntary choice (# of vehicles owned) to coercion (paying taxes to subsidize transit).
YOU seem to have a problem with being taxed for certain methods of Transportation, but not others. Why? Is it because in your mind you have deemed mass/public forms of transit to be superior to the automobile?
I have not once advocated the taxation or Government subsidization of ANY form of transit in this discussion.
In fact, I started this as a comment about reducing or removing Government taxes on ALL business...my feelings are the same about Government subsidy of transit, the less the better.
YOU are the person who decided to stop discussing business taxes, instead dodging into derisive talk about the "Walmartization" of America and subsidized transit. Then you have the audacity to get indignant with me for points and arguments I still haven't made?
Once again, I don't like the Government picking winners and losers in the economy, whether it be business taxes or transit subsidies.
I am already well aware that you, however, do not have this feeling. You seem to believe that picking winners and losers and treating individuals and groups differently is one of the roles of Government.
Don't be his porn.
Nice!
I heart Walmart.
You dont have to go to a stripmall, and nobody is forcing you to live in a McMansion. You can live in a fucking teepee for all anyone cares and you can grow your own food and sew your own clothes. You see, in a free society, you are allowed to do that too.
Big businees and corporations have to power and wealth to just buy out their competition. Why do you people not know that simple fact?
Then start your own fucking business and dont sell out to anyone.
Just try competeing against Walmart. Why is it the world you guys want looks alot like bladerunner?
Do you even know it?
Walmart sells things at a low cost and they employ many of the people in those small communities. Walmart started out as a small business -- much like all other businesses except the Fed, Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac.
If you want to compete with walmart, you need not be as big as they are, you just need to find a competitive edge. Walmart has scale as their advantage and they are constantly studying demand for the products they offer as well as the ones they dont offer.
A small business could exist side by side with Walmart, but not if they try to do it the same way. Start with a small niche market, deliver a high quality, high value product that Walmart is not delivering and then capture that market as fast as possible. You have to be aggressive. Mom and Pop shops end up closing because for most part they offer nothing of value that Walmart doesn't offer. Is this really a bad thing? Do you think that all mom and pop stores have a right to exist despite the fact nobody wants anything they are offering?
There is a garden center in my town that has been there since the 70's. About fifteen years ago, a Walmart moved in one block away. Walmart has its own garden center, but yet the family owned garden center has stayed open. The family garden center has changed its inventory and sells more specialty products, things that are unique to the region, and things that Walmart cant or wont offer so they survive.
Walmart helps the poor by driving down prices on important necessities. I dont see many smaller businesses driving prices down. Not saying its not possible, but Walmart has more capacity to force prices down because of their scale. I am having a hard time figuring out how this could be bad.
Plus, Bladerunner was a cool movie and I would love to be able to see thousands of small food stands and strip clubs all over the place along side of massive companies manufacturing sentient robots and selling tickets to vacations on the off world colonies.
While small businesses are helpful, big business can create even more jobs than them.
Mommy, where do big businesses come from?
The president stimulates them into existence.
China does.So does Japan.
Why dont you guys know THAT either?
How are we supposed to compete with other countries if you dont pay attention to what they are doing?
You do know Japan subsidises each car from between 3k and 5 k right?,,,each car.AND they have national healthcare, getting those costs off the backs of business.Like every other industrialized nation ...but US.
And I suppose those subsidies are all free and there is no cost whatsoever to the people.
Man, that makes me horny!
Frog in a pot Funny how republicans allowed bush to start 2 wars without enough troops for either
cut taxes,
torture
destroy the constitution
Spy on americans
Lie us into war
sign the biggest healthcare bill in history {and yes its bigger than Obamas}
Sign TARP and the STIMULUS
yet NOW they protest.
hmmm......could it be the black president?
If they get back in charge it gonna be GOODMORNING IRAN!!
When was the last time any leader started a war and cut taxes?
NEVER...EVER...in the history of the world.
But that is how you bankrupt a country.Funny And I thought republicans prided themselves on knowing history and business.LOL!!.....right is wrong.
My, you must think you're at WND. How embarrassing. It's okay - common mistake around these parts. Go take a political science course at your local community college and come back when you understand the spectrum a little better, Mmkay? 🙂
"yet NOW they protest.
hmmm......could it be the black president?"
Yup! Reason Magazine began in January 2008, the same month as classical liberalism. Jackass!
I like how someone who is half white is considered black. Post racial my ass. The only people who seem to notice Obamas race are the people holding a full deck of race cards.
Yup Reason was created by the Koch brothers.Same guys who have given you the teabaggers....Cato and lot of other reich wing goodies,
Typical tool of the retarded left to go straight to race baiting.
What percentage of republicans think Obama was born in Kenya?
That he has no birth certificate?
He;s a secret muslim?
Its big.
Tax cuts for small businesses help florists, whereas "capital gains" cuts help hedge fund managers, who should be drawn and quartered, not rewarded
Finally, Reason gets it!
DanceDanceHappyHappyJoyJoy!
No more tax cuts for John Galt-wannabe billionaires who pay lower rates than their secretaries! Whooo!
*sigh* have to play the race card huh? Last card in the playbook of a losing argument.
Bush cut taxes - and the economy grew. Oh the media called it a jobless recovery but there were jobs and unemployment was under 5%.
Lie us into war - yep, that's why almost everyone in Congress and the rest of the world thought Saddam had WMDs. Besides that point - it's horrible to free another country from a dictor.
Actually, Bush's medicare isn't bigger than Obama. You really need to check your facts. Oh that's right, you don't have any.
Everyone complained about TARP.
But the breaking point was that while Bush was a spender, Obama and Congress said amateur we'll show you how it's done.
But facts don't matter so just go yell it's because it's skin color. Reid's and Pelosi's too.
(BTW - Bush stunk as a fiscal leader and I am no way a fan. I'm a fan of facts)
Where were the protests over all of bush's crimes?
Where were the protests over TARP?
And what percentage of republicans think Obama was born in africa?
That hes a secret muslim?
That the healthcare plan is a communist plot when if FACT its a 100% republican heritage foundation plan including the mandate?
Sure ...keep telling yourself that.
In case you havent noticed Obama inherited an international coup by the banks and and they are in charge now.
Too obvious for ya?
Oceania was at war with Eurasia; therefore Oceania had always been at war with Eurasia.
George Orwell
The protesters over TARP were calling congress into the night BEGGING them not to sign the bill. And so you dont get all BUSH CRAZY on me, I am talking about the BUSH TARP. Hundreds of thousands of people called the switchboard into the night but they just HAD to fucking pass it right away.
Regarding the rest of the crap you wrote, you are a MORON. You can find the craziest person in the crowd and say they represent the entire crowd. NEWS FLASH DUMBASS, YOU ARE THE CRAZY GUY IN THE ROOM.
Congress was forced into signing the TARP under the THREAT of martial law.
Thats called blackmail.
Where were the protests?
Like I said, people were calling congress like crazy and at first they capitulated. People did not have the time to band together to protest, by the time it did happen, it was too late. I know it sucks, but its not easy to get people that actually have to work every day to come to Washington to protest with only a few days to spare before voting.
Nice. Good to know somebody else remembers calling congress until the last possible hour telling them not to pass tarp.
This is right on. Our economy won't heal until Obama is gone. Then it will roar, which will deeply discredit liberalism. He's in a box - damned if he unleashes the free market, damned if he doesn't, but doubly so. In spite of the now likely discrediting of liberalism regardless what he does, he's a purist, so he likely will stay his course.
If taxcuts create jobs and balance budgets where are all the jobs.We should have 100% employment right?
and no debt?
I'm pretty tax cuts are less relevant than blatant interventionism. Once it's clear to the players that the referees are going to decide the game however they want, without regard for player skill (perhaps even some degree of contempt for it), it makes sense to keep your good players safe and on the bench and wait for the next game. Why get them injured on a game with no rules?
Obama's fucking of secured creditors for political cronyism in the GM fiasco is one reason no one wants to invest -- everyone is aware that if you put your money in a politically disfavored place right now, the feds will straight up steal it and give it to someone else. Since the balance of political power is likely to shift soon, betting on Dem cronies isn't reliable either. Better to play safe with your money and wait for the power of the syndicalists to wane.

FAIL!
Go tell it to Lou Dobbs idiot. You blame scabs, he blames beaners. It should be a real interesting conversation.
It's getting pretty annoying to keep repeating this but here goes.
Most countries with a strong middle class also have strong unions=CORRELATION
Strong middle classes cause strong unions=CAUSATION
OR
Strong unions cause strong middle classes=CAUSATION
Correlation does not equal causation.
NOW YOU SAY IT!
lol. . .
Q. Which rooms smell more like a a garden breeze?
A. The bathroom does! The bathroom is therefore the most pleasantly scented room in the whole house!
PAY NO MIND to the fact that the bathroom regularly smells like shit and therefore demands more garden breeze scented candles.
LOL
I think I'll steal the shitter-room example!
I was always hip to the whole brevity thing but now I prefer el duderino to duder.
LOL Its particularly effective when there is still that pungent mix of shit and air freshener lingering.
The budget is a double entry system dumbass.
You cannot cut taxes without cutting spending. Fucktard Obama is saying hey, lets build some sweet off ramps to stimulate the economy, c'mon fellas, its only 50b we can swing it. And while were at it well say we are cutting taxes, when we are really just letting current tax cuts stay in place."
Money out needs to = money in or there is no balanced budget. There is no rational tax rate you could use that would wipe out the budget deficit in any reasonable kind of timeline, that is unless you think its possible to tax everyone more than 100% (thats 100% for every citizen, including children and elderly people that do not have jobs).
We dont have jobs because most small business have to pay taxes. Now lets see, let the government spend money on off ramps and bridge repaving or, let small business spend the tax money on HIRING PEOPLE.
Less taxes + Less spending = more jobs. Spending causes inflation, and before you even try to tell me that inflation can be a good thing, just know that inflation leads payroll not the other way around. You get paid the same wage, but the dollars you have in your hands purchase less and less.
There are billions of "stimulus" dollars just waiting to enter the economy and when it does, thats when the shit is gonna hit the fan.
OBAMA goes about his business by speaking the lie. II Thessalonians 2 says that he comes "with all deceivableness of unrighteousness." Revelation 13:12 says, "and he spoke as a dragon?." Revelation 17 tells us that he was a false prophet, a prophet being one whose calling it is to speak and to teach. The armies of the world may have guns and tanks and bombs to bring people into submission; but the power of speech and ideas is a mighty power. In his initial attempts to destroy the cause of God, OBAMA used a serpent to deceive the woman with crooked speech: "You will be like God." Now he uses a "dragon" who speaks crafty, lying words. His speeches will be heard by millions who will hang on his persuasive rhetoric. The content as well as the form of his speech will attract. Like most false prophets, he will even be sincere and passionate. But he is a liar. He adds dashes of truth to the mix, so that his lie tastes like truth. He will use all the right catchwords, using the language of the church, even throwing in a Bible text or two. But he is the ultimate Liar, and will deceive many.
OBAMA will use every tool available: school teachers, politicians, news broadcasters, artists, musicians, scientists and doctors, lawyers and businessmen. All will be pressed into the service of OBAMA to deceive men. But especially he will use those whose calling it is to persuade and to teach ?quot; men who claim to be preachers of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

TO THE WEAK-KNEED REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRAT?..TO ALL THE COMMUNIST IN THE IG,FBI,CIA,AND U.S. Senators and the left wing media outlets////////07 Sept. 2008 11:48:04 EST, Televised "Meet the Press" THEN Senator //Mmslim Barack Hussein Obama, was asked about his stance on the
American Flag.
General Bill Ginn USAF (ret.) asked //Mmslim Barack Hussein Obama, to explain WHY he doesn't follow protocol when the National Anthem is played. The General stated to Obama that according to the United States Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, Sec. 171 "?During rendition of the national anthem, when the flag is displayed, all present (except those in uniform) are expected to stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Or, at the very least, 'Stand and Face It'."
NOW GET THIS!! ? - ? - -
'Senator' //Mmslim Barack Hussein Obama, replied:
"As I've said about the flag pin, I don't want to be perceived as taking sides".
"There are a lot of people in the world to whom the American flag is a symbol of oppression.."
"The anthem itself conveys a war-like message. You know, the bombs bursting in air and all that sort of thing."
(ARE YOU READY FOR THIS???)
//Mmslim Barack Hussein Obama, continued: "The National Anthem should be 'swapped' for something less parochial and less bellicose. I like the song 'I'd Like To Teach the World To Sing'. If that were our anthem, then, I might salute it. In my opinion, we should consider reinventing our National Anthem as well as 'redesign' our Flag to better offer our enemies hope and love. It's my intention, if elected, to disarm America to the level of acceptance to our Middle East Brethren. If we, as a Nation of warring people, conduct ourselves like the nations of Islam, where peace prevails ? - ? perhaps a state or period of mutual accord could exist between our governments."
"When I become President, I will seek a pact of agreement to end hostilities between those who have been at war or in a state of enmity, and a freedom from disquieting oppressive thoughts. We as a Nation, have placed upon the nations of Islam, an unfair injustice which is WHY my wife disrespects the Flag and she and I have attended several flag burning ceremonies in the past".
"Of course now, I have found myself about to become the President of the United States and I have put my hatred aside. I will use my power to bring CHANGE to this Nation, and offer the people a new path? My wife and I look forward to becoming our Country's First black Family. How long have you been off your meds?
From Henry Carey's Harmony of Interests, 1851
Henry C. Carey, adviser to Abraham Lincoln, and perhaps the leading American System economist, wrote extensively exposing the failure of the British free trade approach and demonstrating the success of the American System.
"One looks to increasing the necessity for commerce; the other to increasing the power to maintain it.
One looks to underworking the Hindoo, and sinking the rest of the world to his level; the other to raising the standard of man throughout the world to our level.
One looks to pauperism, ignorance, depopulation, and barbarism; the other in increasing wealth, comfort, intelligence, combination of action, and civilization.
One looks towards universal war; the other towards universal peace.
One is the English system; the other we may be proud to call the American system, for it is the only one ever devised the tendency of which was that of elevating while equalizing the condition of man throughout the world.
``Such is the true mission of the people of these United States.... To raise the value of labour throughout the world, we need only to raise the value of our own....
Wrong site?
Yes, what we need now is another McKinley tariff. That will knock us right out of the doldrums, for sure.
Yes because China, Japan and Germany dont have Tariffs
Tariff wars are good for the economy. Almost as good as stimulus spending. Everybody knows that.
Depends what country yur rutin fer fat boy!
I'll say China.
The doctrine of regulation and legislation by "master minds" in whose judgment and will all the people may gladly and quietly acquiesce has been too glaringly apparent at Washington during these last ten years. Were it possible to find "master minds" so unselfish, so willing to decide unhesitatingly against their own personal interests or private prejudices, men almost god-like in their ability to hold the scales of Justice with an even hand, such a government might be to the interest of the country, but there are none such on our political horizon, and we cannot expect a complete reversal of all the teachings of history. --Gov Franklin D. Roosevelt of New York, March 2, 1930.
I cannot undertake to lay my finger upon an article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on the objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents.
HEAR YE HEAR YE HEAR YE
KEYNESIAN ECONOMICS HAS DIED. HE WAS FOUND MAULED TO DEATH BY THE FREE MARKET TIGER.
Friends and family of Keynesian economics say that he was quiet and generous to everyone, but neighbors who knew him paint a different story of this troubled youth. One neighbor has seen his abuse first hand and says he "got lucky" a few times when he tried to calm it down, it was on several occasions quite sedate so the boy assumed he had tamed the beast. Little did he know that the free market tiger was growing impatient with his BS and so despite having his hands bitten off in the past, he continued to taunt the snarly beast in an effort to train the tiger.
"Well that boy gone n done it this time" said long time neighbor Friedrich Hayek. "I told him not to taunt that free market tiger with his insane spending fixation, but he just kept spending and the beast it got taste for money. Now how do you control a monster addicted to government spending I asked him. His only reply was that it wasnt addicted it needed him and it loved him. The boy was a fool and the beast bit his head right off just as soon as it realized it was addicted to his medicine."
Today the boy who foolishly tried to force the tiger known as the free market to sit quietly in the corner was killed by the very beast he had thought he tamed.
My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.
-------
To preserve our independence, we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. We must make our election between economy and liberty, or profusion and servitude. .I place economy among the first and most important of republican virtues, and public debt as the greatest of the dangers to be feared.
-------
The principle of spending money to be paid by posterity, under the name of funding, is but a swindling futurity on a large scale.
-----
The policy of the American government is to leave their citizens free, neither restraining nor aiding them in their pursuits.
------
I believe the states can best govern our home concerns and the federal government our foreign ones.
-----
The course of history shows that as a government grows, liberty decreases.
----
On every question of construction, let us carry ourselves back to the time when the Constitution was adopted, recollect the spirit manifested in the debates, and instead of trying what meaning may be squeezed out of the text, or invented against it, conform to the probable one in which it was passed.
-----
When all government, in little as in great things, shall be drawn to Washington as the Center of all power, it will render powerless the checks provided of one government on another and will become as venal and oppressive as the government from which we separated.
----
The care of every man's soul belongs to himself. But what if he neglect the care of it? Well what if he neglect the care of his health or his estate, which would more nearly relate to the state. Will the magistrate make a law that he not be poor or sick? Laws provide against injury from others; but not from ourselves. God himself will not save men against their wills.
-----
A wise and frugal government which shall restrain men from injuring one another, which shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government.
The Constitution only guarantees the American people the right to pursue happiness. You have to catch it yourself.

He that lives upon hope will die fasting.
The central bank is an institution of the most deadly hostility existing against the Principles and form of our Constitution. I am an Enemy to all banks discounting bills or notes for anything but Coin. If the American People allow private banks to control the issuance of their currency, first by inflation and then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the People of all their Property until their Children will wake up homeless on the continent their Fathers conquered.
It will be of little avail to the people, that the laws are made by men of their own choice, if the laws be so voluminous that they cannot be read, or so incoherent that they cannot be understood.
----
There are more instances of the abridgement of the freedom of the people by the gradual and silent encroachment of those in power, than by violent and sudden usurpation.
-----
If Congress can employ money indefinitely to the general welfare,
and are the sole and supreme judges of the general welfare, they may take the care of religion into their own hands;
they may appoint teachers in every State, county and parish and pay them out of their public treasury;
they may take into their own hands the education of children, establishing in like manner schools throughout the Union;
they may assume the provision of the poor;
they may undertake the regulation of all roads other than post-roads;
in short, every thing, from the highest object of state legislation
down to the most minute object of police, would be thrown under the power of Congress.... Were the power of Congress to be established in the latitude contended for, it would subvert the very foundations, and transmute the very nature of the limited Government established by the people of America.
A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have.

THE IRON HEEL OF OBAMA IS COMING DOWN QUICKLY. IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE OBAMA USES SOME EXTRA-CONSTITUTIONAL MEANS OF SILENCING HIS OPPONENTS. IT MAY COME AS AN EXECUTIVE ORDER. You know, its actually easier to read something when the letters are not all capitalized. New sentences begin with capital letters and the easier it is to see a new sentence, the easier it is to distinguish one thought from the next. Periods are useful, but not if they are completely surrounded by capital letters.
I am not saying I disagree with you, but I do take issue with some of your comments.
One, Obama is not a Muslim, but even if he were, I am not sure I see how it should matter.
Two, though it is certainly debatable based on current evidence, Obama is not a communist. He is a liberal democrat that buys into the idea that the government can make adjustments to a recessed economy. He is a man who believes that Government grants liberties rather than liberties being a natural aspect of our humanity. He is a man who believes that commodities such as health care are rights and so he feels compelled to grant these rights through government. I personally think he personally believes in a strong government control of the economy and the means of production, but still maintains some sense of property and private ownership of some entities. If anything this would make him more of a socialist. Not saying its much better than communist, but at least its possible he wont consider taking over every single aspect of the economy, just the ones that he thinks are important, like heavily unionized automobile manufacturing and health care services. If anything, his obsession with taking over industries, bailing out unions, nationalizing health care, demonizing the wealth creating wealthy class, and plenty of other crazy schemes he has hatched in the 1.5 years he has been POTUS may well land on one of two outcomes. The first is that his quasi socialistic schemes will create a political environment where these types of things are considered more acceptable and mainstream, which creates a moral hazard in that it allows a real communist totalitarian to justify anything he wants, and I am not talking about govt health care here, I am talking the whole thing, soup to nuts government control of the economy. Or on the other hand, he will turn off so many people to these crackpot ideas that the door will swing the other way towards greater economic liberty, which will hopefully allow for some kind of renaissance of liberty-centric politics (the good kind where politicians recognize natural liberty, not the bad kind where politicians try to grant every conceivable nicety under the sun as a "civil right").
Mr. Obama is indeed dangerous, but it is this that makes him weak. One might allow a bandit disguised as a bible salesman (John McCain) into their homes without a single thought, but what would you do if a bandit dressed like a pirate (the bad kind) came to your door with a gun, you of course would protect yourself and do whatever it takes to avoid this person and get them off your porch. Obama is a pirate in pirates clothing. We will only be safe once he is gone and we will do what it takes to make sure he leaves ASAP.

To show your differnece, going out with wearing louis vuitton handbags,Gucci handbags or Chanel handbags is your own choice, but I think because the brilliant quality and technique of louis vuitton bags , only theLouis Vuitton handbas can set off that you are pretty extraordinary.
Yes, I agree wholeheartedly tgyh, though as a dude, handbags make me look well a bit light in the loafers, do you have anything a dude might be able to carry that is both manly and convenient?
PS, I'm not a homophobe, just sayin' dude with handbag is a pretty easy equation here. El Duderino just wants to look extraordinary without all of the awkward sexual bias as it is both time consuming and difficult to constantly explain that you are not gay, not that there's anything at all wrong with being gay, but your not and it is just nice to have a handbag -- you know for the shit you need to carry about town etc. . .
Anyway, please get back to me ASAP, I have an event coming up and I need to impress.

United States of America ! the commander, stop communist obama
