Spill Speech Only The Latest Instance of Obama's Vision Deficit
Writing at AOL News, Reason's Nick Gillespie argues that last night's Oval Office speech by Barack Obama was simply the latest example of the president's "vision deficit," or inability to deliver on the hope and change that motivated voters to put him in the White House.
What can only be called President Barack Obama's vision deficit first came into undeniable, turn-your-head-and-cough, full-monty view fewer than 100 days into his presidency, when he started yammering on April 15, 2009, about making sure that the wealthy pay their "fair share" in taxes. Then there was his bold plan to free the nation's cities from traffic jams with a high-speed rail system that pulled not one smoke-belching car off clogged city streets anywhere on the planet.
When it came time to unveil his bold 21st-century stimulus package, it turned out all he was talking about was cash for clunkers, cash for caulkers, and cash for laying asphalt and paying state and local workers for another year or two…
The spill in the gulf will eventually be capped. Here's hoping that—and an effective cleanup—happens sooner rather than later. What will linger long after the last oil ball washes ashore on a sandy beach in Florida or Louisiana is the memory that President Obama, the great avatar of Hope & Change, was slow in responding and weak on details when he finally did. And that his vision on this topic, like all others, consists of soaring platitudes and cliches that, like Icarus' wings, just aren't up to the blazing-hot sun of everyday reality and the catastrophes that come one after another.

The Empty Suit has finally revealed himself to be just that. Even his devoted minions in the press are turning away in disgust (and self-hate?) Yes, many are still venting their rage and disappointment at imaginary enemies (Chris Matthews' Rise of the New Right debuts tonight http://www.infowars.com/infowa.....ht-script/ ) but I think even his most delusional, star-struck fans from '08 have come to the conclusion that they've been had.
That's actually an interesting sociological case study. The press is clearly becoming disaffected of the President and his administration, particularly in his handling of the press. Yet they continue to carry his water every day. When his surrogates told them to tell the public he was getting tough, they told us so in every story. Even as they privately scoffed at the notion. The same thing happens every day - the press office releases the word of the day and they put it at the top of every story. It is really bizarre to watch.
The Obama-loving press is like the abused wife who can't leave her husband. She complains about him privately but returns every night to prepare his dinner.
"The Empty Suit has finally revealed himself to be just that."
Finally?????
To his disciples, yes.
LOL - never fails everytime Kommander Kute Suit writes a comment the rabid right roars out from under the furniture. By presidential standards, Obama's a moderate and one hell of a lot better president than most - think about it: LBJ, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Bush and Lil' Bush.
Now, what do you suppose it is that's different about Obama that sets the rabid juices flowing in the rednecks that reside in the bottom of our society?
I don't know what president you are comparing Barrack to, but your bias is very apparent..... as is your stupidity.
LOL - I believe I named them. Those names that clearly confuse you????? they're past presidents. Now do you know which (what????) presidents I'm comparing Bar(r)ack to? You may wish to revisit your assignment of "stupidity."
Blue, Blue, Blue.
When will you on the left understand what little man Obungler is all about? He likes to play being president, but he doesn't want to tackle the responsibilites that go with the job. He will talk the talk, but refuses to walk the walk. The taunting of Isreal by the Palestinians, the increasingly chumy relationship between Karzi and the taliban, the boldness of Iran, and the antagonistic behavior of the N Koreans all are a product of a "world leader" that refuses to engage, let alone manage, international affairs, especially being the lone world superpower. The economy is floundering, not because his vaunted stimulus package worked (although he swore it was supposed to), but because he is not engaging business leaders and plain folk and asking what their ideas are to get us back on track.
No, instead Peter Panic (never let a good crises go to waste) throws out his lofty ideas and grandiose plans with the misguided belief that somehow all of this will be remembered as brilliancy in generations to come.
So which pres does he remind me of? Well, he has the arrogance of Nixon, the ego (or should we say ego on steriods?) of LBJ, the lack of common sense of Carter, the self rightousness of H. Bush, and the deafness (as in failure to listen to the people) of W. Bush. So I guess you could say he got the worst of all of them.
Well not quite. I hear he plays a pretty good game of golf (god knows he's had the practice).
So, you're suggesting that he should solve all of our problems? Are you further suggesting that he made any of the problems you list?
Isn't it amazing how some of us flop from libertarian to collectivist and statist depending upon the opportunity to denigrate this president?
No surprise there. Matthews is a moron of the highest order. It is a wonder to me that he is still on the air.
I think he likes to hear himself talk.
What was your first clue?
Well, he is a lawyer.
and a politician.
The big problem is not some "vision deficit" but rather the vision that government can somehow 'do things' that 'need to be done' when all else fails. Government as "big daddy of last resort" is the problem, not whomever happens to be the latest frontman for the fraud.
It is not Obama's lack of vision, real though that is, that is the problem -- it is the profound implications of a culture that considers government to be a powerful, superior, source of good acts and good things.
What kind of "vision" are you proposing that Obama could have presented that would have been better than the "deficit" he came out with? The government is the problem here, not the solution.
As an aside, please do not make the mistake of supposing that all Obama supporters were such 'on the merits'. I, and many others, supported him as an alternative to keeping the odious traitor John McCain away from the reins of power. McCain is not suited for a position as county dog catcher. Bad though Obama is, and he is quite bad indeed, he is no McCain. And that is probably the highest praise possible for a politician these days.
no hugs for thugs,
Shirley Knott
I, and many others, supported him as an alternative
That's a very poor reason. You could have withheld your vote in protest. Instead, you gave credence to Obama's victory, and you can't run away from that.
+1. If you *must* vote, write in "Mickey Mouse". Come on, "None of the above".
I write in Barry Goldwater, Robert Heinlein, or P.J. O'Rourke.
What makes you think I voted for him?
I don't and won't vote.
But I was happier that he had won than I would have been had McCain won. That counts as 'supported' in my world.
Look, part of the problem here is the belief that someone somehow could 'do a good job' as president, could have 'a full and heroic vision', and be acceptable.
Nonsense, through and through.
Obama is problematic, but he is not the problem. It would have been far worse with McCain, imnsho. But it can only be good if we have a very different cultural perspective on the presidency and the role of government.
That perspective seems starkly absent from Gillespie's article.
The small good does not justify the great evil.
no hugs for thugs,
Shirley Knott
I must agree. There's too much Teddy Roosevelt in John McCain to let him get anywhere near the presidency. Better an incompetent puppet of overreaching lefty dreamers than McCain.
That counts as 'supported' in my world
Sounds like an equivocation to me.
"I don't and won't vote."
Come on, really? Vote for yourself, at least. Get back at "the man".
The lesser of two evils is still evil.
and lesser.
Yeah, if you're gonna pick 'evil', do it large!
Best bumper sticker ever. "Vote Satan. Why choose the lesser of two evils?
Or Cthulu.
"When faced with the choice of two evils, I pick the one I've never tried before."
-- Mae West
...the odious traitor John McCain...
I'm not a supporter of McCain, but how is he a traitor?
All that time he spent in Hanoi is quite suspicious!
He probably faked his torture, too.
I think he got McCain and Kerry mixed up. Same war...
The "McCain Feingold Prohibit Political Speech to Help Keep Incumbents in Power Act", or whatever it was called. Shitting on the First Amendment is odious and traitorous.
True, but how is Obama any better on that particular score?
Bravo to everything in paras 1&2. Shame on you, though, for supporting this statist fraud.
What motivated voters to put Obama in the White House certainly has nothing to do with Gillespie's goofy fucking libertarian ideology. The malice and incompetence of BP sure as hell shows that government isn't always the problem. Not shit-for-brains Gillespie is whining because Obama lacks the vision to solve this problem. Eeven sucking Ron Oaul's cock won't help, nick. Just stick your head back up your ass and shut the fuck up.
I don't mean any of this, of course. My narcissism makes me do it.
Put a sock in it Edward.
OK. Sorry.
Poor Max, coprolalia has really taken hold.
"Malice"? Are you suggesting that BP did this on purpose?
I think the proper terms would be, BP is guilty of arrogance and complacency, and the government is guilty of corruption and incompetence. But what else is new?
then you should have said that. "Malice" implies a Montgomery Burns-ish attitude...
BP wants the US government to more strictly regulate oil to protect it from those damn upstart oil companies and to subsidize its green energy (Beyond Petroleum) business.
The malice and incompetence of BP sure as hell shows that government isn't always the problem
The Federal Government is the owner of the Gulf where BP drilled, and the leaseholder that allowed BP to drill. Government set the terms and 'oversaw' the safety requirements for BP's venture.
Unfortunately the Federal Government as owner does not act as most other owners would.
I'd say Government 'ownership', and the perverse incentives that creates, plays a pretty big role in this mess.
Mo, I agree with you. And to put a little icing on the cake, BP's liability was supposedly capped at $75 million by-- the government! What kind of incentive is that for BP to figure out the best mix of cost-effectiveness, safety and risk?
If BP knew at the start that it was going to be on the hook for any and all damages resulting from its drillings in the Gulf, I bet things would be very different right now.
CB.
Nope. Not capped at 75 Million.
NM,
After a more careful reading of the Oil Pollution Act, I see that you are correct. The $75 million cap applies only to tank vessels. Offshore facilities must have insurance for $150 million, but there doesn't appear to be a cap on total liability.
Sorry for the misinformation.
It would appear that BP had incentive enough to be safe and careful.
Can anyone contribute more to this?
CB.
BP was also insured for a total of 300 million via 2 insurance companies -

...John McCain away from the reins of power.
I admit to not sharing your strong views on McCain*, but I do find it odd that you thought McCain so bad that not just Obama, but Obama with solid majorities in both houses of Congress a better outcome. All of this could be forecast. Obama did/does not have the experience of even Sara Palin and the solid majorities in both houses were a given the day before the '08 election. You reap what you have sown.
A divided government is a good government. Bring on deadlock!
*I held my nose and voted for McCain, though I really wish I had had another choice to obtain a president that was not of the same party as the speaker of the house and senate majority leader.
Gonna hold your nose for Mit Romney in '12 too? There comes a day where you gotta stand for something, not just whine and follow the rest of the sheeple.
You're part of the problem bro.
"Part of the problem"? If your handle is true, that would explain why you believe this.
Anyone who's taken a basic game theory class should understand why the two-party system is an inevitable result of the way our vote is structured, and that it's na?ve wishful thinking to dream that, somehow, if enough of us just voted for a third party, it would stop. It will not, and GoNavy's correct assessment of that problem by no means makes him "part of the problem."
To be fair, we'll probably never see anyone as good at faking empathy as Bill Clinton in our life times.
Your admiration resonates with me as mine does with Hillary. I pain her feel.
You're a great american Bill.
Aww, shucks!
I always thought you'd make a great next door neighbor (think of the barbecues and late night beers in the driveway!) but you were pretty much a pandering empty suit in the White House and you demeaned the office.
But think of the barbecues!
Yeah, and that ain't a bad-looking little heifer ya got yaself there, neither. Heh,heh.
To McCain & Obama voters: If you don't like any of the politicians running for office. Don't vote for any of them. Voting for the lesser of two evils is still a vote for evil.
Darth Vader or the Emperor? I like the Emperor's get tough policies, and all that Death Star construction really stimulated the economy but then again I think Lord Vader, if given the chance would also crush the rebels and unite the galaxy. Tough call, tough call...
Because there is good in him. I've felt it.
Somehow this could lead to a sexual harassment lawsuit.
Ewwwww.
...AND unlike Obama, the voice of James Earl Jones really could get things done...or at least choke a bitch or two that gets in the way
That is a brilliant idea. If I'm ever president, I'll have James Earl Jones voice all of my speeches for me. I'll just lipsynch.
Of course, in my case, I'm writing the bitches myself.
Saying that the president has a vision deficit is implying that they should have had a vision in the first place. That's too close to buying in to the cult of the presidency for me.
My feeling exactly. The government can't run this sort of thing and shouldn't try. Let's all remember that interests other than SOLVING THE PROBLEM will be at play if the government gets too involved.
I think what Nick is saying here is that Obama has no new ideas. All he ever has had was the same policies that failed in the 1970s. All of the "hope and change" bullshit was just that. There was nothing new or important about any of his ideas.
And we needed someone to tell us that?
I don't. But Nick has to have something to write I guess.
It was written for AOL news, after all.
Most people are not political junkies. And if you only listened to the occasional MSM, you might have been fooled into the thinking Obama was something other than what he is.
I didn't even know that there was an AOL news (or that AOL was still in business) until this post.
'course, I didn't know that Compuserve was still in business either until there was some TV joke about having an @compuserve.com address.
Guess I've had high-speed Internet for way too long to even think about the dial-up business (11 years of high-speed at home).
+2 Bingo!
The Voracity of Hope. It's endless.
Or the Mendacity of the Dope?
It was obvious the "hope and change" bullshit was just that when he picked Biden for a running mate.
Yup, I always knew the Reformer from Chicago was full of it, but picking Biden was a clear wink and a nod at the establishment that the "Hope and Change" schtick was for the masses, not to be taken seriously.
Solved problems don't have constituencies. Unsolved problems do.
Obama is really like those horn things (vuvuzelas) they are blowing at the world cup. Think about it. Both are annoying. Both make noise for no apparent reason. Both act as a distraction to people trying to do something. Both are used for no other purpose than the hear the sound they make.
He really is President Vuvuzela.
Nice. Probably can't use publicly, as you'll be called a racist, but it catches the tone of a president who can't shut the hell up.
That is awesome dude. One thing Obama and the 2010 World Cup have in common is that when either one comes on, I have to put the TV on mute.
+1
I love the sound of the vuvuzelas. I want to mute the talking heads and enjoy the game to the beautiful music of the crowds. I hope they start showing up in the NFL and NBA and MLB.
I've been know to appreciate the sight and sound of a good vulva myself.
You have got to be joking???!!!?? Vuvuzelas make the most mindless noise ever invented by humans. It means nothing other than "I am here and I can make noise" - just like your president!!
I don't understand what people expected from a guy with no public administration experience whatsoever. Or any type of administration.
You reap what you sow.
I never understood the love for him, either. No experience to speak of, very little to judge him by, and the known result of going back to one-party rule, which hasn't been a good thing since the Federalists. Probably not even then.
They sold a brand. The brand was the smart, educated people versus the dumb hicks. Since Obama went to the right schools and looked good, he must have been competent. Sadly, our whole government is filled with this kind of thinking. You want to know why the MMS did such a bad job making sure BP didn't have a blow out? No one Obama appointed to it had ever worked in the oil industry. They didn't know shit and were thus duped BP. But they all I am sure went to the right schools and had long resumes of political action.
and had long resumes of political action.
And connections.
Connections, yes. Maybe in 2012 the Bilderberger clique will choose more qualified candidates for us to rubber stamp. You'd think our modern Platonic philosopher-kings would do a better job at their self-assigned role.
They not only didn't know or understand oil, they didn't give a shit about it. They were too wrapped up in chasing dreams of green energy.
Obama's ascendancy was the result of just the right set of circumstances, a perfect alignment of the stars: a charismatic candidate, an extremely unpopular incumbent, a weak opponent, a nation that had largely gotten past race as a barrier to high office, and an electorate wholly unable to discern reality from fantasy. That's what can happen in a republic. We're free to commit suicide.
I had a faint feeling he would be president after Bush as soon as he won the Senate seat. It's not completely random, though I hesitate to call it destiny or worse.
Got past race? Electing an unproved, inexperienced pretty chap seems like affirmative action to me.
Obama doesn't actually give a damn about the oil spill and it's effect on anybody.
The only thing he's interested in his own political capital and how to defend it/shore it up.
And in using the spill as an excuse to peddle his own pre-existing power grabbing agenda of cap and tax - which has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the issue of the spill.
C'mon. Sometimes cynicism can create some absurd notions. Do you know ANYONE that is totally ambivalent about this problem?
I believe that almost all government do-gooders actually believe in doing good and care and hope to be able to solve problems. And that in itself is actually the problem. Being in government shouldn't be about doing good. It should be about making the government run effectively within the constraints outlined by the Constitution. It's the do-gooder mentality (across RED STATE/BLUE STATE lines) that screws everything up.
"I believe that almost all government do-gooders actually believe in doing good and care and hope to be able to solve problems"
You are flat our wrong about that.
C'mon. Sometimes cynicism can create some absurd notions. Do you know ANYONE that is totally ambivalent about this problem?
Why do you think it is that he refuses to grant any waivers to allow foreign vessels to come in and assist with cleaning up the Gulf, or even to allow domestic skimmers and boom equipment to come in? Some of these offers of help were made several weeks ago and were explicitly denied in writing.
The worse the catastrophe, the more ammo he has to use in the inevitable new energy bills that are sure to appear in the very near future.
Yeah, I know, and you'd think it would be pretty obvious at this point. If he really wanted the oil cleaned up before reaching the shore, every available skimmer, boom, and pump would be there in the Gulf by now doing it.
But apparently there's still a lot of people out there who either can't put two and two together, or have a lot of cognitive dissonance.
Obama is in your face 24/7 with the same bull shi* Blah! Blah! Blah! He is the Bizarrow President as every move he makes is the opposite that any other President would have done. He has solved nothing and is just growing government and Union jobs. One term President. Every time he speaks he weakens the nation.

Have you met the anonymity bot?
We gotta get the two of you together.
My tingle is gone. =(
The spill in the gulf will eventually be capped.
The Great Federal Money Spill will take much, much longer to clean up. If we can ever cap it in the first place.
We can never cap it.
We can only hope to contain it.
Not that much longer. The south European "money" (=debt) spill is already washing up on the shores of England and Germany, and it will soon cross the Atlantic on the Bernanke current.
What, shouldn't Mr. Gillipse be happy that Obama isn't "doing anything"?
I mean, the Free Market will take care of things all by itself, right?
I am amused that Gillipse has no real complaints about Obama, other than "lack of vision", whatever that means.
Meanwhile, the same 50% of the country that voted for him still supports him, despite the media and the right's absurd attempts to paint the BP disaster as somehow his fault.
What, shouldn't Mr. Gillipse be happy that Obama isn't "doing anything"?
If only he wasn't doing anything, like
(1) denying measures that might help (foreign vessels, artificial sandbars),
(2) shutting down major operations (other offshore drilling platforms),
(3) financially crippling BP (unsupported threats of criminal action, attempts to impound dividends), and
(4) trying to use this crisis to pass yet more horrible legislation that will cause serious damage (cap and trade).
All told I would say that we would probably be better off if he'd got lost on the way to the 15th tee a month ago, and the search parties were still looking.
Or he could just fly over the Gulf coast in Air Force One, and look down on the catastrophe, like W did.
Meanwhile, the same 50% of the country that voted for him still supports him,
Oh, really? Linky, please. And not a linky to a general approval poll showing his approval rating at or abouve 50%, but to a specific poll showing that 2008 Obama voters are still supporting him in large numbers. This plummeting support among (former) Obama supporters was the actual point of Gillespie's article.
...despite the media and the right's absurd attempts to paint the BP disaster as somehow his fault.
So much crazy...not even wrong...you have my pity.
As illustrated by DanT above, the President's base is growing restless, yet can't bring themselves to admit they were wrong, and can't publicly criticize him. So they're blaming imagined enemies and conspiracies.
I suspect that the 2010 election will not go well for those people.
"As illustrated by DanT above, the President's base is growing restless, yet can't bring themselves to admit they were wrong, and can't publicly criticize him. So they're blaming imagined enemies and conspiracies."
Much like Bush II: Electric Boogaloo's supporters. It took 8 years of bullshit to turn the tide, and what did we get? Tea Party half-assery and neo-con rebranding. We are fucked.
It's a good thing this shit crashes down come 2012. Thank god. No student loans for me. So long suckers!
I am so sorry. Please forgive me. I wasted my vote in the last election. I voted for Ron Paul. I had the chance to be part of history and I ignored it for my own selfish denial of the institution of the two parties in America who know what is best.
I am so sorry.
What? You don't want to go for triple sorry, Clementine?

"I don't and won't vote."
By abdicating your duty as a citizen to vote and participate in the government "of, by, and for the people" you have also abdicated your right to have a voice in anything regarding the policies and conduct of the government or any of its officials.
Sit quietly and cry in your own beer!
Dude, that's like telling someone he doesn't have a right to bitch about being murdered just because he won't choose between being shot or getting his throat cut.
...so I can spit in their goddamn face.
Louis,
They have a right to bitch...but bitching doesn't change things when not paired with actual participation.
It does, however, help them to believe that there is something to this "if only the right people were in charge" charge they fling around so frequently when the bitch.
It goes like this. "Government is the problem...yet you think it would work if only the right people were in charge." I don't believe that, so I don't vote.
Of course, they then explain that if people in charge were like them, and followed their principles, things would work better.
That Obama, why won't he fix the dang spill! Against all political reason, he's just sitting around letting it happen when he could clearly squint his eyes in a more forceful way to make it all better.
He could suspend or repeal the Jones Act (or get Congress to do so), and allow those foreign oil-cleanup vessels that were offered around day three to come and help. He could have lit a fire under the bureaucrats who sat for weeks on Jindal's request for permission to build sand berms. He (or his underlings) could have listened to the company manufacturing floating barriers is response to the spill, instead of ignoring their repeated offers for weeks. Etc.
Since nobody else has apparently pointed this out yet here goes....
"The best way to dramatically clean up the environment is to shut down the Pentagon."
How's that plan for a hemp fired engine coming?
Why would anybody point out how much oil the military uses?
It has nothing to do with fixing the oil leak.
Will the Pentagon "Stand With The President for a Clean Energy Future"?
The best way to dramatically clean up the environment is to shut down the Pentagon.
And the best way to shut down the Pentagon is to take away its credit card by shutting down the Federal Reserve.
You forgot:
- Requires repealing the laws of physics and economics.
- Requires ignoring nuclear power to placate the greens.
I agree with you 100%. The refusal of the eco loonies to support clean nuclear energy makes totally clear that their agenda has nothing to do with "saving the environment". They are really nothing less than than useful idiots in the outdated war against capitalism.
Personally, I like my beaches covered with oil. Keeps the riff-raff away.
Call me an elitist if you want but I like a nice private beach.
