Patriotism at the Schoolhouse Gate
By now you might have heard about five high school kids in California being sent home for wearing American flag paraphernalia on Cinco de Mayo. If not, here's a quick primer:
"They said we could wear it on any other day," Daniel Galli said, "but today is sensitive to Mexican-Americans because it's supposed to be their holiday so we were not allowed to wear it today."
The boys said the administrators called their T-shirts "incendiary" that would lead to fights on campus.
"They said if we tried to go back to class with our shirts not taken off, they said it was defiance and we would get suspended," Dominic Maciel, Galli's friend, said. […]
But to many Mexican-American students at Live Oak, this was a big deal. They say they were offended by the five boys and others for wearing American colors on a Mexican holiday.
"I think they should apologize cause it is a Mexican Heritage Day," Annicia Nunez, a Live Oak High student, said. "We don't deserve to be get disrespected like that. We wouldn't do that on Fourth of July."
If kids aren't disrespecting the Fourth of July, then the Youth of Today really have gone to the dogs.
Film critic, Tweeter extraordinnaire, and political irritant Roger Ebert comes up with an incongruent solution:
Kids who wear American Flag T-shirts on 5 May should have to share a lunchroom table with those who wear a hammer and sickle on 4 July.
Nice try, but if you think anyone flying commie colors on July 4 (or Cinco de Mayo, for that matter) would attract attention from the "incendiary"-averse, you probably haven't been to a street demonstration over the past, say, quarter century.
Meanwhile, at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Maureen Downey is colored a distinct shade of unimpressed:
[A]t the heart of the issue — five California high school students were kicked off their campus Wednesday for wearing t-shirts and bandannas emblazoned with American flags on Cinco de Mayo — is simple courtesy toward others. […]
I know that this is going to set off folks who believe that these kids are true patriots defending American values and culture, but there is a difference between patriotism as principle and patriotism as a rebuke or put-down of others.
Eugene Volokh, who knows more about the legality of this than you do, responds to the discourteous charge here and here.
I sincerely hope that the school employee who sent the kids home is fired with prejudice, and once again thank my lucky stars that I'm old enough to have attended school back when only Catholic kids wore uniforms, campuses weren't fenced (or metal detectored), and teenagers were expected to act and dress like smart-alecky jackasses, or at least heavy metal stoners. And hey, Associated Press? Morgan Hill isn't "San Francisco Bay-area," it's 70 miles away, in an agricultural area more known for garlic festivals than wacky politics.
Cinco de Mayo and Fourth of July duke it out alt-rocker style, below.

I don't really get Cinco De Mayo - don't get me wrong, I am all for supporting and celebrating Mexican heritage! I just don't know why you would pick a battle that you won over the FRENCH to do it (even if you were outnumbered)...
it does go to show you that every country has beaten the french at some point in its history.
Don't tell that to the Algerians.
they eventually "won"... didnt they?
One could argue France is getting their ass kicked by Algerians as we speak.
Actually, it's the Libyans you're thinking of. Algeria eventually beat France. France teamed up with Chad and beat Libya in the '80s.
Chad never beat anyone, at least not at HnR.
I don't think the US would support kicked your ass at the Alamo day.
It should.
Didn't we lose at the Alamo though?
I forget. Sorry.
San Jacinto
Yes. And we're still losing.
I agree; historically intelligent cultural disreprect would be wearing Les Couleurs on May 5 and the Union Jack on July 4.
Heh. That's why I wore a t-shirt with a French flag on May 5. Interestingly, not one of my too cool for school intellectually superior colleagues figured it out. I guess Ph.ds ain't what they use to be.
I bet if it had a fleur de lis as the flag had then, they'd've picked up on it.
I insist you stop using the fleur de lis, and you too, NFL. My copyright! I'm not dead, just resting.
Nope. The tricolour was the French flag under the Second Empire, just as it was under the First Republic, the First Empire, the Orleanist monarchy, and the Second Republic.
Good Lord - without meaning to, I wore a tricolor tie yesterday.
I do believe it will be the beginning of a tradition.
This is what a high school student in the US says about a US flag. How can you discuss immigration issues and the Arizona law without dealing with this?
Every American ethnicity should have its own special day of tribalism.
kick your chauvanist ass in the balls day?
The so-called "Cinco de Mayo" (or May 5th) date is NOT a Mexican holiday. We do not celebrate May 5th as we do September 13th (the Heroic Children day), September 15th (the Independence Cry day), September 16th (Independence Day) or November 20th (Revolution Day).
"Cinco de Mayo" is really some sort of pseudo-Mexican celebration (just like American yellow cheese enchiladas are pseudo-Mexican food), one that we Mexicans become aware of its existence through reruns of Speedy Gonzales cartoons.
This is what I was thinking. Don't they know that Cinco de Mayo is the day when white college kids drink corona, and wear gaudy sombreros.
Also, Cinco de Miracle Whip gets no respect.
anyone else google "Cinco de Miracle Whip" to see if it was some sort of digusting vegetable dip?
Great fat-kid pic in the 1st few results.
It's all about Diecis?is de Septiembre.
"(just like American yellow cheese enchiladas are pseudo-Mexican food),.."
My friend, Hector? He was telling me about that at happy hour the other day, about how "Mexican food" doesn't really have cheese all over it. He said it between bites as the shredded cheddar was falling off his taco...
If you think about it, though? Technically? Anything Hector eats is by definition "Mexican food".
There are few things more American than taking other cultures and turning them into excuses for binge drinking and extra cheese.
Blessed are the cheesemakers.
The irony is that the manufactured "Mexican Heritage Day" on May 5th commemorates a battle in which Mexicans rid themselves of a hated occupying force. I find it odd that this holiday, not well observed in Mexico, should be embraced in the US, especially in view of the widely-publicized opinions of many latino activists that the US is occupying land in the Southwest that should still be (or once again become) part of Mexico.
I'm getting tired of this hearing this "disrespected" complaint all the time. Like you're entitled to respect by the mere fact of your existence. Respect is earned, not given. At least it should be (our "culture of rights" has bastardized everything).
Also, boys, remember what country you're in. Maybe wearing the stars and stripes would be in poor taste on a Mexican national holiday if you were in Mexico, but you're in the US. We will wear them any day we want.
I have nothing but respect for your awesome culture. It's so awesome, you fled across the border because conditions are so shitty in your awesome culture.
"Respect is earned, not given."
I agree. But it's not seen that way anymore. I learned that when I started working with gang members. I asked a collegue why do these kids shoot each other and was told because they'd been disrespected and that we had to remember this and trat theses kids with respect. And I thought, man, that's fucked up. People may respect the gun, but that doesn't earn the shooter any genuine respect.
Fear =/= Respect.
I'm sure you're right. Unfortunately this habit of finding a slight in every little thing that happens (or manufacturing a slight when none is available) and then reacting to it out of all proportion to the original "offense" is one of the things that has us in the mess we're in as a country. Everyone could use a major chill pill.
...this habit of finding a slight in every little thing that happens (or manufacturing a slight when none is available)
It's a way of justifying one's own seething hostility.
It would be funny if someone wore the French flag.
Exactly.
Which tells me those Mexican-American students are morons - Cinco de Mayo is NOT a Mexican holiday, it is a gringo pseudo-Mexican holiday.
Which tells me they were actually offended because some white boys didn't kiss their little brown asses.
It tells me they could be gangbangers. Who refers to the American Flag flags as "American colors"?
This happened in Mexico, right?
"Which tells me those Mexican-American students are morons - Cinco de Mayo is NOT a Mexican holiday, it is a gringo pseudo-Mexican holiday."
I agree that it wasn't one--but I think maybe it's becoming one...
Sort of like how Mother's Day was started by a gift card company? When Mexican restaurants first started showing up all over America in the '70s, they needed a gimmick to kick off the Summer--they used Cinco de Maio, and it's really taken off, no doubt.
I guarantee you, though, if American kids are sportin' the flag everywhere 'cause they think they're stickin' it to their Mexican classmates, their Mexican-American classmates will embrace it as their own even if it isn't.
Cinco de Maio may become sorta like the croissant that way. You know now the croissant wasn't really invented by the French? It was invented by the Viennese bakers as a way of stickin' it to the Muslims for being beaten in an important battle? And now it's important to the French! ...who didn't have anything to do with that.
Cinco de Maio may never be very important in Mexico--but it could become really important to Mexican-Americans, especially if kids are usin' it to thumb their noses at people of Mexican ancestry.
What's prohibited wear on Canada Day?
May day?
Cuba's liberation day?
Gut Fawkes Day?
Poland's Day of Solidarity and Freedom?
Estonia's Restoration of Independence Day?
Whatever they celebrate in Fiji?
I could go on but I think the ridiculousness of this moronic PC bullshit ia amply demonstrated.
From now on I will wear a business suit on May Day to show solidarity with management.
+1
I wear Orange on March 17th.
Ouch.
As do I. I don't particularly do it for disrespect, but because, as I understand it, orange is affiliated with protestant, and green catholic. I happen to be protestant.
OBSCURE CULTURAL REFERENCE OF THE DAY WINNER! Your prize is your choice of a potato or head of cabbage. NO green beer, unfortunately
I wear the Union Jack.
Whatever they celebrate in Fiji?
Dude, it's Fiji. Do they even need official holidays?
. . . among the myriads of stupid things Roger Ebert has said over the years. He should stick with film reviews and leave the politics to us adults.
Yeah, just when I start to like the guy again, he says something really stupid. U.S. flag = Hammer and Sickle har har.
Cinco de Mayo in the U.S. is a me-too holiday intended to celebrate tribalism and nationalism but mostly to boost Tostitos and salsa sales.
i thoght it was to boost Dos Equis sales?
And Corona, of course.
And Jose Cuervo.
Anything that promotes "beer" flavoured beverages like Corona should be banned.
Whoa dude, don't be dissing on my Corona, and I won't be dissing on your Busweiser.
Try a Budvar then. The real Budweiser.
Then you can move on from your girls drink.
Budvar is great. I wish my parents would go to the Czech Republic again and bring me some more...
I thought it was promoted solely by Corona sales reps. I never even heard of it until I went to college and people used it as a reason to go out to drink all day instead of staying home and drinking all day.
So we are in agreement: a fake holiday whose sole purpose seems to be intoxication and reverse racism. Everybody wins!
Yeah, your right - I can't tell those Mexican beers apart (thats a joke!!! Dos Equis is much, much better than Corona)
Agreed, no matter how much fruit you cram into that Corona bottle.
If your beer requires fruit to be palatable, you fucked it up already.
Can't a cerveza get any love around here?
Negra modelo, is fucking awesome. But since it doesn't taste like bud light *ahem corona cough* it gets no play on the fratguy, err I mean Mexican Heritage, holiday of may5.
I also enjoy Bohemia Obscura.
Looks good, if I see it somewhere I'll pick up a sixer.
Agreed. But it's actually a Vienna lager, not a natively Mexican recipe.
This regarding the specific Modelo product referenced by capitol l.
True, Dos Equis is a good beer, Corona is Mexico's piss beer like our Bud. Dos Equis was incidentially founded by German immigrants in Mexico.
Austrian immigrants, I believe. Mexico is the primary source of Vienna lagers.
Pacifico Clara.
Germans and Austrians basically founded the entire Mexican beer industry.

The Germans killed off cider when they arrived in the US.
I hereby designate tomorrow, May 8, as Ocho de Mayo, in recognition of our dead national cider. Respect it!
I need to find someone of German or Austrian descent and go hug them.
Egyptians Germans and Austrians basically founded the entire Mexican global beer industry.
FIFY
I'm a fan of Negra Modelo and Bohemia, myself.
It's more polite to call it the "N" beer.
I dig Lucky Stripe - not sure how it relates to the whole US flag on Cinco De Mayo discussion, but it is enjoyable beer.
Sweet mother, I cannot even get my beer right - RED Stripe.
I thought it was promoted solely by Corona sales reps. I never even heard of it until I went to college and people used it as a reason to go out to drink all day instead of staying home and drinking all day.
The first time I ever heard of it was on St. Patrick's Day when some mick whose sister I was banging told me I had to wait for Cinco de Mayo to celebrate because it was his day.
I was like, 'huh?'. Fifth of May, why the fifth of May? I was perfectly willing to drink on that day as well, but I wanted to drink on St. Patrick's too, just not some shitty Celtic product unfit for human consumption.
on St. Patrick's Day 1990
I wonder if this school has an American flag flying every day during school hours. Did they pull the American flag down on Cinco de Mayo and put a Mexican flag up? If not, then it does seem hypocritical to single these kids out. If so, then that school doesn't even know what country it's in.
Also note that no schools are in session on the Fourth of July because it is a national holiday. Non-sequitir FTW.
From what I understand, 5 Mayo in Mexican Culture is closer in significance to Veterans Day in ours.
But you can also bet that if a Hispanic kid wore a Mexican flag T-shirt on, say, Flag Day, they would not be forced to remove it.
Locally, maybe. Nationally, it's more akin to Arbor Day. Recognized but not observed.
Also note that no schools are in session on the Fourth of July because it is a national holiday
And, it is in the middle of summer.
What about summer school?
Whoops capL, you're revealing your "i managed to never goto summerschool" colors.
Hell, i failed classes and never went to summer school. Thank god for social promotion...
Did they pull the American flag down on Cinco de Mayo and put a Mexican flag up?
Why didn't I think of that?
this is f*cked up and disrespectful. any american flag should come with a warning sticker that tells parents that some of the values and ideas prevalent at the tim of this country's founding were f*cked up.
plus another sticker that mentions how the few values that weren't fucked up back then have since been mostly abandoned.
This is stupid of course. However, sometimes it is possible that a shirt containing political content would truly be incendiary and disruptive of the school's mission of education. That's the main reason I support school uniforms, along with concerns about poor kids being mocked by rich kids for their cheaper-looking clothing, and concerns about immodest clothing leading to other sorts of disruption of learning if you know what I mean.
Fuck that shit. I liked girls in halter tops and micro mini skirts in school. I also liked being able to wear a hat made of Budweiser cans crocheted together.
Ha, please tell me more about this Budweiser hat...
I had one of those hats back in the 70s.
I was 7 years old, though, so cut me some slack.
I had a Heineken hat like this.
... a hat made of Budweiser cans crocheted together.
Aluminum Budweiser cans? Like in aluminum foil or tin foil?
I so agree with you JsubD. The 70s and 80's was a really good time to be in high school. Demonic designs, liquor logos, even marijuana pins would not get you kicked out of class. Kids today probably convulse in shock when they look up in their parents annuals and see all of this.
That's not quite true. In the 80s, I inadvertently wore an Orange shirt on St. Patrick's Day.
Some Irish kid complained, and I had to wear a jacket over it. (Ironically, turns out, I'm Irish, though I didn't know it at the time)
But yeah, I would have been so expelled for some of the stuff I did that didn't even garner an eyelash beat.
There is a reason the opinions of teenage boys are not taken into account when setting up school policies.
Unless you're a complete loser, you can ogle the girls after school and on weekends, just not during the time they're forced to be near you. And if you are a complete loser, you have the Internet.
Unless you're a complete loser, you can ogle the girls after school and on weekends, just not during the time they're forced to be near you
I'm a little skeptical when a guy whom teenage girls refer to as "Dr. Teabagger" make statements such as these.
Er, don't see the relevance there.
Given that I am Math Incarnate to the math-hating masses for the time being, and guilty of making anti-govt jokes, it is only to be expected.
You know who has the best outfits? Homeless kids. Granted, they just have the one outfit, but it's usually pretty sharp.
I am not kidding.
Government schools shouldn't be determining what is disruptive, incendiary, or offensive.
I'm no fan of govt schools myself, but note that most non-government schools make students wear uniforms.
Oh, I forgot, libertarians trust the market to determine the best course of action EXCEPT when that determination conflicts with their devoutly held beliefs or adolescent sexual fantasies. Sorry.
Private contract versus public compulsory education, in many areas.
Given this, then, the only answer is to homeschool! XD
Like, for instance, wearing the Mexican flag during a faux Mexican holiday . . . right?
OM, does it not speak to cultural ignorance on the part of Mexican-descended residents, and non-Mexican descended residents, to not only celebrate a non-holiday, but also to turn it into a sensitivity issue?
This school is not doing an adequate job of teaching history and cultural literacy, IMO.
Maybe, but it certainly speaks of unbridled, unintelligent chauvinism.
Major props, OM. It isn't everyone who can use the word chauvinism properly. Most don't know that it originally didn't have anything to do with feminism.
Only a fool has anything to do with feminism.
Of course they wouldn't do that on July 4th. They have no school on July 4, even if they have Summer School, it's closed because it's a US FUCKING HOLIDAY IN THE U S OF FUCKING A!
I may seriously be changing my supportive stance on immigration if these people don't wise the fuck up and stop expecting anyone to placate them.
I may seriously be changing my supportive stance on immigration if these people don't wise the fuck up and stop expecting anyone to placate them.
Incidents like these, coupled with the fucking 'Che' t-shirts make it harder and harder.
I told you, but you wouldn't listen....
Shut the fuck up lonewacko
+ Uno
I'll bet they have school (at least summer school) in other countries. So if a bunch of Americans were attending school on July 4 in East Fredonia, would it be insulting if the East Fredonians wore t-shirt made out of their national flags? Would the principal send those East Fredonians home? Would the Americans have the unmitigated galls to whine that they were offended and that the East Fredonians *should* be sent home?
The so-called "Cinco de Mayo" (or May 5th) date is NOT a Mexican holiday.
That's why Mexican In A Che Shirt (With Megaphone Grip) is my favorite seasonal character.
It's a holiday made up by white people to sell "Mexican" crap to idiots, and Che was a white supremacist with a special hatred for Mexicans.
"Viva!"
Further evidence of public schools enabling vain complaint, enforcing compliance against will, igniting intolerance* and demonstrating that non-PC opinions will not be permitted.
Yes, the bitter bile is still coating my tongue...
*by trying to force kids to be "tolerant" of everyone, the opposite is encouraged. People get tired of having to accept everyone and everything all the time. THIS issue may be the single one that is killing academia - truly free thought is not permitted, and anyone can be a victim if they act hurt and cry loudly enough.
I've spent 10 years of my life either attending a college in California or dating someone who was attending a college in California. I can assure you that your asterisk is 100% true. The reaction to committing a Thought Crime would throw Frank Rich into vapors if he were anything other than a hack. My undergrad lady friend was threatened for having a job that put her in contact with someone else who said something that had been labelled as "un-PC" (that just flat-out wasn't.)
tangential contact. Lousy impatience.
"would throw Frank Rich into vapors "
What a thoroughly unappealing mental image that phrase conjures.
Dude, I have BOTH those albums! How cool is that? Er....
Liz's song rocks much better on the album than that lame video.
among the myriads of stupid things Roger Ebert has said over the years
Now that's just mean... you try not sounding stupid with half of YOUR face missing.
i swear i was threaded! i swear!
The kids weren't sent home for wearing the US colors, they were sent home for disobeying the school administration's request to remove them.
The school administration was simply trying to prevent trouble, since only the most naive among us would not realize that the kids were trying to provoke their Latino classmates.
Because he is God and he must be obeyed . . . right?
No, but part of the job of running a school is to maintain order. Which, contrary to the popular opinion around here, does require the establishment of rules and what not.
The Ultimate Fish Tacos
Ingredients
2 pounds mahi mahi (skinned, boned and cleaned) cut into 1-ounce strips
2 cups all-purpose flour
3 eggs, lightly beaten
4 tablespoons water
2 cups panko bread crumbs
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
Vegetable oil, for frying
1/2 head savoy cabbage, finely shredded
1 bunch cilantro, leaves picked
1 bunch chives, chopped
3 limes, cut into wedges for garnish
Pink Chile Mayonnaise:
1 cup sour cream
1 cup mayonnaise
3 chipotles in adobo, plus 2 tablespoons of adobo sauce
1/2 lemon, juiced
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
Mango-Radish Salsa:
2 limes
2 mangoes, diced
4 to 5 red radishes, diced
1 red onion, diced
1 tablespoon chili powder
1/2 bunch fresh cilantro, leaves chopped
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
Directions
Prepare the fish. Cut the pieces of fish into 1-ounce strips. Set up a breading station of flour, lightly beaten eggs with water, and seasoned panko bread crumbs. Season all with salt and pepper. Dredge the pieces of fish in flour, egg then bread crumbs. Once all the fish is breaded deep-fry in small batches in (375 degrees F) oil. Drain on paper towels and season with salt. Keep warm until ready to serve.
Prepare the pink chile mayonnaise. Put the chipotles in a blender and puree until smooth. Add the sour cream, mayonnaise, adobo sauce and lemon juice and continue to process until the mixture is consistent and creamy. Season with salt and pepper and refrigerate until ready to use.
Prepare the mango-radish salsa. Remove the peel and pith from the limes and cut between the membranes to remove the segments. Put these "supremes" into a bowl and squeeze over the juice from the membranes. Add the remaining ingredients and mix. Season and refrigerate until ready to use. You can also place all of the ingredients into a food processor and puree for a smoother salsa.
To serve, set up the tacos "family-style". Assemble the fish in a pile on a plate; the pink chile mayonnaise in a bowl; and mango-radish salsa in another. Set a pile of shredded savoy cabbage, cilantro leaves, chopped chives and lime wedges next to the fish. Toast the corn tortillas lightly over an open flame (on your stove top) and serve.
Man, that sounds great. I had some fish tacos for lunch yesterday.
Tyler Florence has produced some good recipes. A flan recipe I got from him is one of the best I've ever had, let alone made. Crazy.
Dan T. is big fat fish taco, if you know what I mean.
No, but part of the job of running a school is to maintain order.
How did that work out for them?
In this case it looks like the prinicpal was trying to enforce unestablished rules, and ended up getting publicly rebuked by his district.
To recalcitrant statists, order is paramount . . .
Even if those rules are established impromptu . . . Looks like expediency is also paramount to recalcitrant statitst . . .
Order is important to normal people. It's hard to accomplish anything without it.
DanT,
That would make prison inmates the most normal people alive - their world is nothing but order.
That was creepy, Dan.
Yes, different levels of order are needed in different circumstances.
If you really think order is creepy, there are plenty of places in the world where pretty much anything goes...
I order you to leave and never come back.
DanT,
That's what creepy - that you would accept such notion. Also, seems quite contradictory, as you said unequivocably that normal people require order and that things cannot get accomplished without order. Nothing was mentioned of gradations of order being necessary.
Isn't that a rule in itself?
"T" is for 'Tautology'...
+plus
The most naive of us do not read minds, DanT.
and respect the OM.
Provoke them to what? Violence? If sporting 'old glory' is provocitive to the point of violence to certain Latino classmates, perhaps it is the intolerant Lation classmates that should have been removed instead?
Don't you know, waving an American flag in front of a Mexican is like waving a red flag in front of el Toro.
RIght. If you are so fucking sensitive that something like a US flag shirt will spur you to violence (or even getting angry), then you are the one who has a problem that needs to be worked out.
Or, you might just be somebody who understands that the message relayed by a symbol depends quite a bit on the context in which it is sent.
Or you might be somebody who thinks kids should be taught to control their emotions - even if they are "hot-blooded" Latin kids - or maybe especially so.
Or you might be somebody who needs to grow up and understand that we don't live in Nerf world, and that being a civilized person means dealing with such things in a rational way.
What was that you said about the importance of order? The most important order is that imposed from within yourself.
We are not punishing you for speaking, oh no, that would be illegal. We are punishing you for not shutting up.
So you believe that latino kids have so little control over themselves that the sight of the American flag on may5 will provoke them into violence, right?
Correct but we can't say that though we obviously believe it to be the case.
Why don't they punish the students when someone has actually been harmed, instead of this pussy might happen bullshit. You can't blame someone who is simply wearing a shirt when some ignorant douchebag takes it as "disrespect". Fuck paternalism.
So fucking what if they wore the shirts to "provoke"?
Candyassery abounds.
"The school administration was simply trying to prevent trouble, since only the most naive among us would not realize that the kids were trying to provoke their Latino classmates."
That's why they apply bleach to the black kids there -- they don't want their non-whiteness to provoke the skinheads in the school to lynch them or something.
So the First Amendment is suspended on May 5th? Would a t-shirt that said "Bong hits 4 Guadalupe Hidalgo" be okay?
Also, I agree with the alt-text on the first picture. Linda Carter was very incendiary back in the day.
"Bong hits 4 Guadalupe Hidalgo"
That made me laugh.
Fighting for our rights,
In her magic tights.
Wonder Woman!
Does Captain American get to go naked on this day?
Only if he's at a public school.
I will also take this opportunity to point out the irony in so many libertarians proclaiming that a holiday cannot be "real" unless the State recognizes it.
Fresh Fried Corn Chips with Tomatillo Salsa
Ingredients
Tomatillo Salsa:
1 pound tomatillos, husked and rinsed
1 jalapeno, stemmed
1 small Spanish onion, quartered
5 to 6 garlic cloves
1 tablespoon kosher salt
1 bunch fresh cilantro, leaves coarsely chopped
2 lime, juiced
Vegetable oil, for frying
12 corn tortillas
Kosher salt
Directions
Bring a pot of water to a boil and add the tomatillos, jalapeno, onion, garlic, and 1 tablespoon salt. Reduce the heat and simmer gently for 5 to 10 minutes until the tomatillos are soft but have not burst. Drain and reserve cooking liquid. Add the cooked vegetables to a blender with the cilantro leaves and lime juice. *Pour in 1/4 cup of the reserved cooking liquid and process to a coarse puree - be careful when you process the hot liquid as it will expand - so make sure you hold the lid down firmly. Taste and adjust seasoning with more cilantro, lime juice, or salt according to preference.
Prepare corn chips. Preheat oil to 375 degrees F. Cut tortillas into large wedges and deep- fry in batches until golden and crispy, approximately 1 to 2 minutes. Season immediately with salt so it sticks and serve warm chips with tomatillo salsa.
* When blending hot liquids: Remove liquid from the heat and allow to cool for at least 5 minutes. Transfer liquid to a blender or food processor and fill it no more than halfway. If using a blender, release one corner of the lid. This prevents the vacuum effect that creates heat explosions. Place a towel over the top of the machine, pulse a few times then process on high speed until smooth.
Nice side for the fish tacos!
Perhaps I missed that argument/post/article? Who said that exactly?
Eat up Dan, you shit gobbling troll.
Who said the state has to recognize it? What we have said is that the students saying they wouldn't wear Mexican colors on the 4th of July were morons because there is no school on the 4th of July. There happens to be school on May 5th and American students in an American school should be able to wear something that day that they would be allowed to wear any other day. If wearing American flag clothes incites Mexican or Mexican-American students to violence, those students have the problem, not the ones wearing American flag clothes. State recognition of the holiday has nothing to do with it.
So if students wore swastikas to school during a Jewish holiday it would be the Jewish students' problem if they got upset?
LOL I was waiting for the Nazi reference. Did you just compare US Students students wearing a US Flag on thier shirt in a US school located in a rural farm town in the USA to wearing a Swastika on a Jewish holiday?
Analogy fail.
The analogy is that both symbols can be used by one group to intimidate another. If you're cool with one, shouldn't you be cool with both?
The American flag. In America. A tool of intimidation.
You're stupider than I thought Dan T.
Well, now we know what he really thinks.
Soooo....he must think we should all oppose Obama, cause Obama is always up there with a couple of those intimating, racist American flags behind him? Logical???
Dan self-Godwined. Not surprising, given his intelligence threshold.
Huh?
Because the American flag symbolizes to Americans of Mexican descent the exact same thing the swastika symbolizes to American Jews?
Not the symbol itself but the context is similar.
You've got a point, given the history of Mexican death camps in Northern California. Perhaps the kids who wore those flags should be made to visit one of the mass graves.
Godwin says you lose, Dan.
Ja, mein jefes! Und ein more Cerveza, dumkopf!
DanT,
Of course - someone, somewhere, gets upset for anything; why would it be your or my responsibility to make sure such a person is happy?
And the swastika is not a Nazi invention. FYI.
Well said, OM. It appears that DanT has forgotten that there isn't a Constitutional right to not be offended.
Yes
Yes, it is your own problem if you can't ignore someone being obnoxious.
Interestingly, the Supreme Court has consistently (and correctly) rejected the notion of a "heckler's veto"--i.e., an unreasonable person's actions (or potential actions) being the justification for limiting the speech rights of someone else.
^^^^^
THIS!
Which would seem to prevent schools from using this justification unless there was a clear and imminent incitement to violence involved. Which, of course, was not remotely the case.
I believe Brandenburg is still good law, which established this test:
Note that even the threshold isn't met here--the kids weren't advocating violence or the violation of the law. Even accepting some of the special cases involving kids (which contradict prior law quite a bit), there has to be a pretty clear disruption caused by the speech in question. Again, not the case, and if kids react irrationally to mild provocation, I daresay they're the problem.
Fuck the draft!
Judge Roger T. Benitez (Federal Court in California) -- "An imaginary Muslim student is not entitled to a heckler's veto on a teacher's passive, popular or unpopular expression about God's place in the history of the United States."
http://hypocrisy.com/2010/03/0.....mon-sense/
That's even worse--the imaginary heckler.
It's a key concept in First Amendment jurisprudence that there isn't a right to not be offended. Even when we make exceptions to that doctrine--obscenity laws come to mind--the theory is that we're all (in our community) generally in agreement. That's not a great way to handle such things, but it's an exception to the general rule.
And more interestingly, since it actually applies in this case, the Supreme Court has ruled that schools can restrict the speech of students to a greater extent than the government can restrict the speech of the general public.
Matt-
Nice choice on the pic. I remember an episode of "Battle of the Network Stars" during which Ms Carter participated in a swimming even. The suit, when wet, was pretty close to sheer. Good times, good times...
The sad thing is, Lynda Carter could never get that role in 2010 - she'd be considered too "fat".
No, she'd be considered too skinny. An Amazonian these days would have some serious muscles.
Personally, I make a point of wearing orange on St. Patrick's day.
As I think I mentioned here the last time St. Patrick's Day came up, I too make it a point not to wear green on St. Patrick's Day, although much of what I have is closer to red than orange.
I'd love to make a T-shirt reading "26 [in green] + 6 [in orange] = 1 [in the Union Jack motif]" to wear on St. Patrick's Day. 🙂
When I was at P.S. 108, we had one of our many fucked-up (i.e. confusing and confused) projects that I thought had something to do with St. Patrick's Day, but maybe didn't, that involved decorating a shoe box. Mine, which I still have, was wrapped in shiny green paper (I think Mother did it) and contained an orange (which IIRC was her joke too).

For many years the mayor of Toronto was the honorary Grand Marshal of the Orange Day parade. Even the Jewish mayors accepted the "honor", IIRC.
The practice ended with more of a whimper than a bang in the late sixties but not before there was a lot of speculation about what would happen if a Catholic became mayor.
Personally, I make a point of wearing orange on St. Patrick's day.
I have found that regardless of what colors you wear on St.Patrick's you will get pinched, hit, and kissed.
Could someone explain to me why wearing an American flag disrespects Mexican-Americans? Anyone? Bueller?
I am willing to bet that most Mexican-Americans* would not be offended in the least. It was only the nannyist school administrators that were pissing themselves.
*Further, I will bet that most Mexican-Americans are damn proud of their US citizenship as well and wave the Stars and Stripes with as much enthusiasm as any redneck.
"I am willing to bet that most Mexican-Americans* would not be offended in the least."
Then how did the articles covering the story get quotes from the Mexican (even if they're citizens, they don't deserve to be called Mexican-American) students in the school bitching about the flag?
Because once someone hands them faux indignation, teenagers become lemmings. They really do. They're all so very desperate to make a difference in the world, and any cause given to them makes them run like idiots towards a cliff.
Fifty says that those students never would have even NOTICED the shirts, had it been left quiet.
True, because aren't they Mexican-Americans?
We'll soon find out.
"They said if we tried to go back to class with our shirts not taken off, they said it was defiance and we would get suspended"
So what happened, did they just take off their shirts and go back to class?
They left school and went home. Last I read they were facing suspension for leaving school (unexcused absence).
Oh Wow, Wonder Woman, now those were the days.

You've got image recognition along side humour recignition now?
I'd love to make one of you losertarian fundamentalist twits principal for a day at an inner city LA school. Some tough kid would shove a knife up your ass.
Pomegranate Margaritas
Ingredients
1/4 cup pomegranate juice, store bought is fine, plus seeds for garnish
1/3 cup Tequila Blanco (about 4 ounces)
1/8 cup Triple Sec (about 1-ounce)
1/4 cup fresh lime juice (about 2 ounces)
12 ounces ice cubes
Margarita salt, optional
Directions
Combine all ingredients, except salt, in a blender and pulse until frothy and well combined. Rim glasses with lime juice using a lime wedge then dip in margarita salt, drop some fresh pomegranate seeds in the bottom of the glass and pour margarita mix over the top.
Tyler, you're just kicking ass today.
really should print these recipes they look good.
So inner city kids are thugs? Racist.
Some are.
So are some country boys. And some suburban jocks. And a few hippies.
And all cops.
Is that your fantasy Max, the ol' knife up the ass? Make sure your partner (Dan T.) has plenty of gauze and Celox on hand to stop the blood from pouring out your ass.
I'd start charging admission. Privatize that bitch!
Because an LA inner-city school has exactly what to do with this conversation?
Morgan Hill is a little town known more as a farm-town for garlic and wine as well as being a sleeper community for Silicon Valley commuters.
"cause when shit hits the fan,
I'll stab your ass quicker than Mexi-can"
A libertarian would probably only keep the job for about a day.
"Hey kid, would you mind sharing some of that..."
Behold, fellows! The liberal who espouses violence!
Inner city LA schools....people still use that phrase? I thought Michelle Pfeiffer took care of the shit in the nineties.
I wish people would quit using that term. I only use it when I'm trying to get away with making disparaging remarks about black people.
This shows how well Mexican immigrants are assimilating into our culture. They now have loads of surplus time and energy with which to get outraged over petty shit. Welcome to America amigos.
Demanding the right to not be offended is becoming very American.
As I keep saying, it is now time to file for divorce with California.
Maybe we can add Puerto Rico, and kick out Cali....wouldn't have to change the flag that way.
And once a year they could hold a California Day parade in New York City.
Liz Phair should only write songs about fucking.

Youth of Today really have gone to the dogs.
Youth of Today were always a lousy hardcore band.
the real joke's on Annicia Nunez. We don't have work or school on holidays we respect.
Two things:
1. I really wish Ebert would quit saying stupid shit. He's a great film reviewer, but every single time he talks about something else, I lose more and more respect for him.
2. I'd kind of like to know why these students wore that stuff that day. Obviously it doesn't make a difference--no matter why they did it, they have that right--but I'd still like to know if Maureen Dowd is right and they did it deliberately to provoke a reaction (kind of unlikely, I'd say), or if there was no plan or anything and the kids, like most kids that age, just threw on the T-shirt at the top of the drawer, and it happened to be an American flag shirt, or what.
I think it's obvious they did it to "provoke" people, but that doesn't mean they should be punished for it. Teenagers are notorious for being contrary, and the more you force PC notions of "diversity" and "multiculturalism" down their throats, the more you'll see reactions like this.
How is it obvious? None of the articles I've read on this indicate at all what the students were thinking when they put the clothes on, or if they even were thinking about what they wore at all.
Personally, I didn't even realize it was Cinco de Mayo until about 11:00 that day. Surely there are other people who don't think about that too...
I didn't realize it was Cinco de Mayo until I got back from the university, so your point is valid.
When I was that age, there were a lot of times when I said and did things just to "make a statement" without thinking through the consequences or the reactions of other people to that statement. It seems likely that's what these kids were doing.
So in my opinion, both the random coincidence explanation and the intentionally provoking violence explanation are misguided.
MMMM, YES, PLEASE MAKE LYNDA CARTER TAKE OFF HER OFFENSIVE AMERICAN FLAG-COLORED CLOTHING. MMMMMMMM.
THE URKOBOLD WILL BE IN HIS BUNK, DELIBERBATING.
"COLORED CLOTHING"
Clothing of color, you backwoods, racist, bastard.
YOU LEFT OUT "SEXIST," YOU FOOL!
WOULD HUED BE BETTER? THEMED? RACK-SUPPORTING?
All CLOTHING on hot young chicks is oppressive!!! Free the boobie two!!!! And the spicy taco (in honor of cinco de mayo)
Easy solution: Wear a T-shirt with a Mexican flag, and a couple silhouetted figures of a low-rider and a fat Mexican housewife pumping out another kid and eating a burrito. Plus, work some handcuffs and a welfare check in there somewhere, too.
And LOTS of cursively written neck tats.
Boycott Cinco De Mayo. As posters above have pointed out it's not even a real Mexican holiday. It's a fake American non holiday. Plus the day celebrates violence, war and killing. You would think the school would have more of a problem with that.
It also celebrates not paying debts - something every civil servant with a pension probably has a problem with.
I believe the correct method for dealing with such a situation would be to emulate whatever Mexican schools' policy is in regards to American-Mexican students on July 4th (unless Mexican public schools are closed on that day as well).
That'd be awesome to see our kids whack the beaner kids on the head like a pinata!
And hey, Associated Press? Morgan Hill isn't "San Francisco Bay-area," it's 70 miles away, in an agricultural area more known for garlic festivals than wacky politics.
I don't know what you're talking about. I live in Morgan Hill and it IS part of the bay area. It is 70 miles or so from SF but SF is not the defining point of "The Bay Area". I would agree that it is not a hot bed of political activism, it is a nice, small town, mostly a bedroom town for Silicon Valley types.
And the garlic festival is in Gilroy, not MH.
Can you get to the bay in under an hour?
Yeah, the REAL Bay: Monterey Bay!
Seriously, if you drive north for an hour (given no commute congestion), you will find yourself traveling alongside the southern end of the SF Bay, perhaps approaching its midpoint (depending on your speed).
mostly a bedroom town for Silicon Valley types.
Dr. House, I think we have a diagnosis.
You mean it isn't Lupus?
I think they learn that they deserve respect in Mexican-American studies class
Link Fail!
Guacamole
6 ripe avocados
10-15 cherry tomatoes
1 small yellow onion
3 jalapenos
cilantro (optional, to taste)
2 tbsp garlic powder
1 tbsp kosher salt
1 lemon (juice only)
Slice avocados in half, remove pits, and scoop avocado meat into a large bowl. Mash up avocados with a fork until most large chunks are gone. Cut cherry tomatoes in half and remove seeds and insides with a small spoon. Dice tomatoes and put in with avocados. Remove outer skin of onion and toss, dice onion and put in with avocados. Cut tops off jalapenos, and cut them in half. Scoop out and remove seeds and ribs. Dice jalapenos and put in with avocados. Chop up cilantro and put in with avocados to taste. Put garlic powder and kosher salt in with avocados, add more if preferred. Cut lemon in half. Squeeze 1/2 of lemon in with avocados. Mash up all ingredients in bowl to mix until you get the desired consistency. Squeeze other 1/2 of lemon on top of avocados.
Ooh, first failure.
Lime juice not lemon.
BTW, Gabriel's, between Santa Fe and Pojoaque NM, has the best guac in the world.

What's really funny is that yesterday was the National Day of Prayer, and nobody noticed.
I made a public display of not praying at my school. 😉
Did they send you home, too?
Live Oak High school is located in the U.S.
Live Oak's administrators salaries are paid by tax revenues of hard working Americans.
My understanding is that two of the kids are 1/2 Hispanic.
Live Oak administrators missed a golden opputunity to teach their students fundamental things like: Freedom of Speech, Equality and tollerance of others.
Administrators looked to push their own agenda instead of what they were hired to do, TEACH!
I would urge the citizens of Morgan Hill to hold the school administrators accountable to the values you hold as a community, as you pay their salaries.
A lot of eyes are looking upon your community to see what those values are.
Good luck!
Administrators looked to push their own agenda instead of what they were hired to do, TEACH!
If you posted this same sentence on one of the Volokh threads, I replied to you there, but it bears repeating here: Unfortunately, administrators are not hired to teach; in fact, they're hired to not teach. Require every administrator to teach one class every day in addition to (whatever it is that they do in their proverbial ivory tower) and a lot better decisions--unlike the ones that Rodriguez made in this instance--will be made.
I disagree, a teacher threatened my son with suspension for having this image at school.
Wow. That was a tame-assed pic. What kind of uber-weenie WAS this teacher, anyway?
BeesInTheBrain, I'm not sure how your statement disagrees with what I said in the comment above yours. Or have we fallen victim to the Dreaded Nesting Comments Problem here?
So, Ebert believes that exercising one's first amendment right should be punished by violating one's freedom of association, and being forced to sit at a table with the commies? Is this because, as a commie himself, he remembers being lonely as a child?
-jcr
Next year they should all go to school wearing "Remember Goliad!" shirts.
Haha.
Big Government has another video that doesn't jibe with Reason's LA rally whitewash.
Yeah! That proves everyone in those groups is racist! Olbermann said so!
TORCH THAT SCHOOL DOWN THAT VICE PRINCIPLE RODRIGUEZ IS IN NO WAY REMORSEFUL FOR HIS ACTIONS ONLY TRYING TO KEEP HIS JOB
WHAT??
I wore my rebel flag shirt that day. Fuck 'em.
It would be really funny to wear a shirt with the flag of Spain. Heehee.
So, if these kids had been wearing United Nations flags...
When I was a lad, I wore an American flag on my ass, American flag underwear, and whipped my ass with American flag tp. What's the big deal?
For better or for worse, America is known for whipping ass.
