The Simpsons did it!
Ok, maybe not.
Actually, I thought the brilliant comment they had was in the first episode. They produced a "drawing of Mohamed" and everyone winced --- only to see a classic stick-figure drawing. "oooh, um, is that alright?" They then edged their way up to the prophet in a truck (just showing a truck), and then the prophet in a bear suit (just showing a suit). Pretty slick commentary, I thought.
Apparently the name "Mohammed" was visible on the Closed Captioning of the episode.
So somewhere a deaf Muslim is signing his outrage...
This is a symptom of a much larger problem. We have allowed lawyers to accumulate too much power. Lawyers and accountants. Neither one of them should be anything greater than a glorified clerk but we've given them the keys and put them in the driver's seat of civilization.
It's also telling that, despite all the leftist handwringing about how the "teabaggers" are inciting violence, no one is editing TV shows to avoid pissing them off.
The leftist response is perfectly confused and hypocritical. Tea Partiers are supposedly a dangerous menace, so all of them are relentless mocked. Muslims, though, well, only a few are dangerous, and yet we must do nothing to possibly upset any of them.
This is horse crap. The chances of jihadis mounting a successful attack against anyone involved in this show or the Comedy Central network are roughly zero, but they're probably afraid of getting sued if something did happen.
The jihadis have exposed the soft underbelly of American society, unfortunately. CC didn't, and doesn't, shrink from broadcasting the most mean-spirited and fallacious insults against conservatives and the GOP in general, but the jihad-baby shakes its rattle and they come running.
Jihad attack? All it takes is one crazy guy with a gun. Or, failing that, a baseball bat.
"I'll put a jihad on you"
I actually was quite curious if it was somehow either Parker & Stone pussing out (or pretending to do as an elaborate joke) or a case of the actual network getting its panties in a wad.
It's actually a little refreshing to see it's the latter, even if it is disappointing to see Comedy Central fold like an Orgami expert.
a discussion of their first conflict with Comedy Central about depicting the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)
I understand that the "(PBUH)" is intended to be snark, but if you had really wanted to be heroes, you'd have replaced "(PBUH)" with (fuck 'im!).
Yes, let's focus on a bunch of harmless young muslims and forget about the truly dangerous teabaggers, who actually show up to rallies with guns. It'd probably take an actual lynching of a black person at a teabag rally before the reasonoids took notice.
And it would probably take an actual killing of a filmmaker criticizing Islam before... oh wait, that wouldn't make you take notice either.
The young muslims are merely a little misguided. The teabaggers are truly evil people and should be put down like any other insurrection. Bring the military in if necessary, but it needs to be done.
I agree Tony. The Muslims have a right to take revenge on the great white satans because they are brown people. Teabaggers are Nazi fascists that want to exterminate brown people. The government should correct this injustice.
We'll remember that next time some liberal anarchists throw bricks and burn shit during G20 summits.
Young Muslims = a little misguided
Teabaggers = need to be herded into re-education camps - er, prisons
Yep, real consistent there, Tony.
Don't feed the trolls.
This isn't Tony. He's not that much of an idiot.
Yeah I am, dumbass. Hahaha I'm right, you're wrong, libtard.
No one in the media sincerely believes the teabaggers are dangerous, or they would never say anything that might offend them.
Don't feed the trolls.
And the fake trolls.
I thought the fake Dan T beat the fake Tony.
I had it as a draw.
I gotta go with James on this one - Fake Dan T by a nose
I'm calling for a fake independent panel to sort it all out.
I'LL get to the bottom of this!
That sounds good to me.
That fake Tony sure sounded convincing...
I'm testing you.
I just watched the show. It's up, as broadcast, at xepisodes.com (where it's "streaming," but so slowly you should let it start playing the credits, hit pause, go away for a couple hours while it buffers the whole thing, then watch it). It's truly disturbing.
I don't blame Comedy Central as an organization for being a collective ass-pussy. They're what organizations do.
But someone there, one person, agreed to paste piercing test tones (bleeps) over huge chunks of the show's audio tracks (about a minute in total), then did it, saw what he made, thought it was a job well done, and went on home for dinner under the mistaken impression that he's still a member of the human race.
Now, if anyone knows, or were able to figure out, who the actual bleeper was, and where he went for dinner, and that knower or figurer were able to maybe GoogleEarth that location for us and capture the screen while doing that and then slip that video up on Youtube under the name "My house...FROM SPACE, yo!" for example, well...TO BE CONTINUED, y'know?
^^ concerned observation
Don't blame the audio editor, not everyone has the ability to just walk away from a paying job to hold up a certain principle. Stick in any soul-draining job long enough and you either learn to live with it or go crazy.
I don't support what Comedy Central did, but there's another angle to these kind of situations: the people liable to get killed are going to be receptionists, security guards, and mail room staff. Like if the Discovery Channel aired a live abortion in graphic detail one night, the CEOs are going to be fine but the poor girl working the Discovery Channel Store at the mall is going to be the target for every wackjob in her area.
The best case would be Comedy Central not airing it at all, releasing ownership over it, and Matt and Trey show it uncut on their own website.
Keeping the show from airing would have been preferable to the abortion they did air. Now they seem to be fighting Matt & Trey from putting it on their own website uncensored.
It's hard to get explicit abortion footage on TV.
Why is this? Who would be out there making threats if the Discovery Channel aired such footage?
It's even hard to run highly tame ads praising mothers who choose to give birth without the network in question getting pressured to call it off, including legal threats.
It's the 'prochoice' crowd which wants to keep this stuff off TV.
That is an odd example, given that pro-lifers regularly get savaged in the media for displaying graphic images of aborted fetuses at their rallies, and trying to put such imagery on highway billboards.
The pro-life movement seems to be the go-to example for liberals (and apparently "libertarians") looking for a counterpart for militant Islam within Christianity.
Well, it comes down to the same irreconcilable difference that always divides the sides in the abortion debate. If you think that abortion is morally acceptable, then many pro-lifers are just that crazy. If not, then most are quite reasonable. Now substitute "publishing drawings of Mohamed" "abortion".
And whose fault would it be?
The fault would lie with those who cannot control their base animal urges.
Personal responsibility, yo.
And yet they are getting what they want.
There is a lesson there...
My reason for making that distinction is this: it's one thing for you to publish something controversial, or say something controversial in public and bear the consequences. It's a different matter to push those consequences onto your employees who had no part in the matter.
Imagine if UPS decided to rebrand its trucks with racial slurs. The executives will be protected, but the drivers are going to be the ones facing the consequences of that speech.
It's still up to the potential thugs to refrain from being... well, thuggish.
Well, if they're willing to drive trucks painted with racial slurs around, they're apparently fine with it.
It's up, as broadcast, at xepisodes.com (where it's "streaming," but so slowly you should let it start playing the credits, hit pause, go away for a couple hours while it buffers the whole thing, then watch it).
Must have been your connection or a crowd at the time. Seems to stream just fine for me.
But they bleeped the shit out of it, I don't think that it was as originally aired.
The forums on the South Park Website are down, so not only can you not watch the episode, you can't even bitch about not being able to watch the episode
