Racism Updates
In today's Morning Links, Jesse Walker flagged what he called "the most pathetic attempt you'll see today to tie the Tea Parties to racism." While I am largely ignorant in the comparative qualities of public opinion polling, I do read the sports page every day, and I daresay this snippet of a weekend New York Times timeline of quarterback Donovan McNabb's career may give the Multi-State Survey of Race and Politics a run for its money:
April 17, 1999
Eagles Draft McNabb
A horde of Eagles fans known as The Dirty 30 boo and act obnoxiously when the pick is announced. Future historians will confuse this with the start of the Tea Party movement.
Get it? Because Donovan McNabb is black.
In other Tea Party racism news, the Washington Post ombudsman has looked into the alleged (and heavily disputed) N-word outburst on Capitol Hill on the eve of the health care vote, and concluded that "it's worth assigning Post reporters to find the truth."

Isn't trying to prove lack of racism a classic example of the impossibility of proving a negative?
When you look at it objectively, the racists win.
Yes, it is. That's why a charge of racism is so difficult to defend against - and also why it's so often used to smear an opponent.
In the process diluting the definition of actual racism.
I can prove Democrats are racist:
Detroit.
No other proof is needed.
RACIST!
It's sad to see an entire organization without a sense of humor attempt a joke.
The results are seldom this disastrous, though.
The kind of sad that crosses right back over to being hilarious.
Everyone in the world is a racist. It's just a matter of degree. Just because you don't wear a hood dosen't mean you don't see the world to some degree through some sort of racial filter, even if it's not all of the time, and sometimes even dispite your best efforts not to. That's why it's so easy to call people racist, especially large groups of people.
I'm no racist. There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.
"I don't hate the Dutch. I love the Dutch. That's why I hold them to a higher standard."
I miss that show already.
Dutch uncle - somebody who tells you your deodorant has failed.
Dutch feast - The host passes out before the guests.
Dutch fuck - lighting one cigarette off another.
Dutch treat.
This all dates back to the 17th ct.
Don't forget Dutch oven.
A lot of it is how you define 'racism'. I don't believe it's useful to restrict it to overt hostility and hate because of race. I tend to define it broadly. Racism is if someone is expected to behave or believe a certain way because of their race, this is racism. The only reason hate exists is because of this expectation. The term "Uncle Tom" as used by the Left is racist since it expects Blacks to believe in and support a liberal agenda and considers them traitors if they don't. I doubt many people in slave states in the early 19th century actually hated Blacks. They just expected them to 'know their place', much as many liberals do today.
Expecting a certain behavior is stereotyping, not racism. Racism is believing one race is inferior to another. Stereotypes exist because of numbers. Racism exists because of ignorance.
What many people refer to as "racism" today is more accurately called "biogotry".
When WE say someone is racist, it's true because we say they're racist.
In many situations, racism can be a very useful tool.
the Washington Post ombudsman has looked into the alleged N-word outburst...and concluded that "it's worth assigning Post reporters to find the truth."
Oh, that's lovely. Report it as undisputed fact for three weeks, then decide to see if it's really, you know, true.
"Oh, that's lovely. Report it as undisputed fact for three weeks, then decide to see if it's really, you know, true."
In other words, business as usual for the MSM.
So Andrew Breitbart hasn't had any claims yet to the $10000 reward he offered for proof?
Sooo...no can prove that the slur wasn't hollered, but so far no one has proven that it was. Got it.
It's up to $100,000 now. He'd be safe putting up a million.
Philadelphia has never fully embraced the Irish.
No one can have brotherly love for the Irish.
Is that why Paddy's Pub is still a dive bar?
Don't fuck around, Art. That's the best bar in Philly.
As much as I love Its Always Sunny, as a Chiefs fan, I gotta love Big Charlies Saloon on 11th and McKeon in South Philly.
Dude. Back off. Epi will go all American on your ass if you keep uttering such nonsense.
Rock, flag, and eagle style. It'll be ugly.
AND I WILL EAT THEIR LIVERS!!!
"it's worth assigning Post reporters to find the truth."
Translation:
"Since no proof has been provided, we'll have to make shit up to fit our agenda."
This is exactly what I expect to happen.
If the WaPo doesn't offer $100,000 for proof, the market will decide who scoops this story.
Schmuck though Breitbart may be, he's ponied up a bounty for proof of racism.
So... where is this proof?
It'll be a cold day in hell before i accept the Welsh as human beings.
Mae eisiau gras!
Catherine Zeta Jones
if they are from Wales, shouldn't they be called Whalish?
Fuck you!
Welshie!!!
Post reporters couldn't find a cock hidden in their respective asses. But they can find racism under every rock. (has the post hired SPLC employees?)
(has the post hired SPLC employees?)
David Weigel
so probably yea
Yes, it's extremely important to find out whether somebody maybe said a dirty word somewhere. Where was this attention to detail when Congress was trying to pass the HCR Mystery Meat bill?
I dare the FCC to fine me for my potty-mouth incident a few weeks ago.
Charlie: Is it racist if we don't eat this guy?
Dee: Well, shit, Charlie. Now it is!
Charlie: I'm sorry, Dee! I just?the white guy over here looks better to me for some reason.
Dee: He looks so much better, doesn't he? What is that?
Charlie: I don't?you know what it is? I?I generally, I don't eat dark meat.
Dee: No, I prefer the light meat. I always have.
Charlie: Yeah, so it's not that guy.
Dee: No, it has nothing to do with that. It's?the problem is I'm gonna have a really hard time if we're both cannibals and we're racists...
Charlie: We're not, Dee. Cannibalism? Racism, Dee? That's?that's not for us. You know, those are the decisions that are best left to the suits in Washington, OK? We're just here to eat some dude.
+Classic.
"it's worth assigning Post reporters to find the truth."
Interesting that they have to actually make a special assignment of their "reporters" to "find the truth" about a heavily reported and documented event.
Even more interesting that they haven't bothered to do so yet.
Also interesting that apparently none of the Post reporters have either the initiative or the independence to do so themselves.
...it's worth assigning Post reporters to find the truth."
"Not to worry. When we finally do find the truth, we'll be sure to bury it on page A22 underneath the ad for non-prescription toe fungus remedies."
My toes get that!
Boy, the legacy media is sure beating that racism meat. Next they'll be planting skinheads at rallys and you'll see racists like Robert Byrd "convert" to a tea partier to give them more street cred.
"Ever since a black man carried a gun at an Arizona protest, the party that brought us the Ku Klux Klan has been in an Insane panic."
Why is worth investigating if one particular individual may have yelled something racist at an event? If I've heard a guy, who votes Democrat, make a comment about not wanting to drive through "niggerville" at night, does that allow me to proclaim the Democratic party a party of racists? Do I need audio, or can I just make that claim?
No, you just need him to be a tea partier! See, it's that simple!
True. True story.
Can you just say the goddam word nigger and stop pussyfooting around saying the n-word? We're (mostly) adults; can we stop acting like saying the word nigger (especially in the context of a quote) will cause society to collapse?
Can anyone trace this guy? Where do these idiots come from?
I think he has a point. Adults who go around saying "the n-word" just look like idiots.
"All I did was say to my wife, 'That piece of halibut was good enough for Jehovah!'"
Blasphemer !
That's why I just mouthe it...
OTOH, adults who go around saying "the f-bomb" look positively sophisticated.
I can see the merit in what he says. Our cultural pathological aversion to the use of certain words only hastens euphemism creep, leading to more and more terms that cannot be uttered lest they offend.
Our cultural pathological aversion to the use of certain words only hastens euphemism creep, leading to more and more terms that cannot be uttered lest they offend.
And we certainly want to be as offensive as we can.
Certainly not. (well maybe some of us actually do, but I'll assume you're being sarcastic and I agree with you for the sake of moving the conversation along.)
But we shouldn't place all regard on achieving the other extreme either. Whether a particular word is appropriate is a situational call. I'd say a quotation is one of those situations where you should err on the side of accuracy rather than inoffensiveness though.
Spontaneously shouting, "holy fucking nigger!" (while amusing to some)in a large crowd would be something else. I don't have to endorse the latter to defend the former. And I don't have to equate the latter with what I have just done either.
See the R-word.
First they came for the mongoloids and I said nothing because I wasn't a mongoloid. Then they came for the retards and I said nothing because my development wasn't delayed. Then they came for the mentally challenged and I... what was I saying?
+1
I've got no problem if other people use it in the way you mention; nor do I think society would collapse. I just personally prefer not to.
I think white people need to reclaim the n-word. It's not as if blacks are the ones who came up with it. They heard it, liked it and stole it.
"Look, my gang...which I can't talk about because it's super secret is the most important thing to me now, and if you two don't like it, you can just pass the blunt to the nigger on your left."
You have to type it nigga.
Funny!
How's about we compromise and call it "the nigger word"?
How's about we compromise and call it "the nigger's word"?
FIFY
For f-word's sake, can't we just say the n-word?
That's OUR word, you racist honky cracka!
Your point would be better made if you did not use a one-off handle to post it. I do agree that mention of the word "nigger" should not be a no-no. Particularly when quoting.
We'll all look back on this whole thing and laugh at how stupid everyone was.
Some of us don't wait.
The McNabb thing is especially stupid because the Eagles fans wanted the team to draft Ricky Williams, who is also black. To suggest the Eagles were booing McNabb because he was black is absurd - this is a team who had already had a number of (more or less) successful black quarterbacks (Randall Cunningham, Rodney Peete). They were booing because they wanted a running back.
Actually, the analogy kind of works ...
No, Rush Limbaugh was in the audience directing the booers.
Actually it was a loud-mouth radio talker named Angelo Cataldi who happens to think Obamassiah is the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Would that be sliced white bread?
The boors?
No "The Boers." Calling someone a "Boer" is the South African equivalent of "cracker."
Kaffir lover.
What do you have against kefir?
I'm sorry; the card says "boops".
Also interesting that apparently none of the Post reporters have either the initiative or the independence to do so themselves.
Wait, what?
Where do these idiots come from?
Still fishing for Tony's address, eh, Mister Bland?
"She calls it a Mayon-Egg."
"I think I'm going to be sick."
That whole short sequence has some of the best facial expressions ever put on TV.
"George Michael, I'm sure that Egg is a very nice person. I just don't want you spending all your
money getting her all glittered up for Easter, you know?"
That was one of my favorite running gags of all time.
"Her?!"
Well, I was just trying to make a point, and that is that it's the suppression of the word that gives it the power, the violence, the viciousness. Dig: if President Kennedy would just go on television, and say, "I would like to introduce you to all the niggers in my cabinet," and if he'd just say "nigger nigger nigger nigger nigger" to every nigger he saw, "boogie boogie boogie boogie boogie," "nigger nigger nigger nigger nigger" 'til nigger didn't mean anything anymore, then you could never make some six-year-old black kid cry because somebody called him a nigger at school.
-Lenny Bruce
Would it really work? Who knows?
I have heard people use the term "African American" in such a way that it made "nigger" sound like a compliment.
I'm skeptical of Bruce's claim.
I'm not convinced, but I'm less skeptical than you.
In the post-Klan era, I think the power of the word has grown every year. It gets stronger the more it is said.
In 1986 it was offensive and insulting, but pretty much just another day at the office in a world full of assholes. In 2010 it means "Let's fight to the death with knives RIGHT NOW, bitch!"
Duh, that should have read "It gets stronger the less it is said."
It gets said a lot...
Or did you mean "by white people"?
I hear it at least 100 times a day. No shit.
I worked inthe bronx zoo and took the subway evety day back inthe 1980s and NEVER heard anyone call someone a nigger. Now I hear it everyday on the subway from urban kids of indeterminant race.
I blame Chappelle.
I'm skeptical of your skepticism.
I think it's the only word in the entire English language that's actually gotten more offensive as time has passed.
Anyone have any other examples?
Cunt, as a pejorative.
Aren't they now called canadians?
It'll be a cold day in hell before i accept the Welsh as human beings.
Or those bug-eyed Belgian bastards
The L acronym! 😎
And while we're on the subject, I'd like to take the opportunity to apologize for slavery. Again. Thank you.
So you were the one!
While we're on the subject, I'd like to apologize for all the white people that fought to end slavery.
Especially that motherfucker, Abraham Lincoln. Fuck his cracker ass.
Got you covered on the last part.
These sorts of charges are not about winning political points. They are just about making people like MNG feel better. Emotionally liberals cannot face the prospect of there being a genuinely populist movement against them. Protests and popular movement, in the liberal view, are always by liberals, for liberals and lead by liberals against conservatives. Nothing can ever be allowed to disturb that world view. So, the tea party movement cannot be a genuine movement. It must be racist.
There's a lot of validity to this theory, I think.
Very valid.
"People power" is always assumed to be socialist in nature, and for no good reason. All that Marxist bullshit about false consciousness or something.
I recommend the Tea Partiers adopt chants like "This is what Democracy Looks Like!" and "Hey Hey, Ho Ho, Healrth Care Reform has got to go." Just to drive homre the point.
Maybe start singing "All we are saying is give freedom a chance!'
Wait, 1999? Are historians in the future also going to be unable to determine that the Tea Party movement didn't exist in 1999? Maybe the NYT is claiming that the Tea Party movement is the child of all previous racism that has existed in the US. I'm really confused.
Explanation: the New York Times is utterly humorless, as all fanatics are. I hope that clears things up for you.
I'm fluent in three sections!
Just keep reading the newspaper. Don't mind me.
Why no investigation into the connection between white supremacist groups and the antiwar movement?
David Duke protested the war on Iraq, and he even traveled to Syria to criticize the occupation and badmouth America in general.
Why no investigation into the connection between white supremacist groups and the antiwar movement?
Pretty clearly it's racism.
I daresay this snippet of a weekend New York Times timeline of quarterback Donovan McNabb's career may give the Multi-State Survey of Race and Politics a run for its money
That is exactly my initial reaction when I was reading the article yesterday...and then I read the rest. While it may be a lame attempt at humor, context matters. I don't think it was meant to be anything deeper.
Agreed with this. The author (Mike Tanier, Football Outsiders) has a history of mixing humor into his football articles. He's actually quite funny, even if you think this particular joke fell short. He's also an Eagles fan.
I today's climate I can see why the Post is hesitant to question the voracity of the claims.
I don't think the claims are greedy at all.
Comparing Tea Partiers to Eagles' fans is way worse than implying the Tea Partiers are racist.
Eat Shit And Die.
Even when they made that Invincible movie, to put a hot chick in the film they had to make her a Giants fan.
No one would ever have believed in the existence of a hot chick Eagles fan.
Eagles fans /= good.
I'm skeptical of Bruce's claim.
And justifiably so. Words have meaning, and they have power, but they cannot, by themselves, alter the thing they represent, either for better or worse.
I can hear the ice cracking beneath my feet, here.
Some people will always have a visceral hatred for black people, and getting them to alter the superficial terminology by which they refer to those people will never fix that. Allowing "nigger" to return to common usage (by white people) will just give them cover for what is in their hearts.
How do you fix that? I haven't a clue.
You know who I will always have a visceral hatred for? Gangbanger that shoot little girls.
http://www.startribune.com/loc.....3LGDiO7aiU
And if I could get away with lynching them I would. Be great to see this fruit hang from a tree.
I think that most people, gangbanger or not, who shoot little girls are deserving of hatred.
That is not racial. There are plenty of white trash gangbangers out there who need killing.
True, but black gangbanging is truly a multi-generational cultural phenomenon. It's damn near genetic and celebrated beyond reason (e.g., Biggy, Tupak. True, one can say that about the Mafia, but one rarely reads about Mafia killings these days and rarer still would be a story about some Mafioso shooting a 17-year-old girl.
I wrote about another shooting at the end of my block a couple of weeks ago. Hundreds of gangbangers showed up to see where there fellow thug had been gunned down. They brought their fucking toddlers and babies with them all dressed up in red. Fucking pathetic.
For me, the most idiotic thing are the people who preach racial and cultural diversity, who then go all crazy on your ass when you point out that some of the unique components of a specific culture, might not be admirable.
I sure hope you're not conflating ghetto culture with black American culture. It's just a subset.
I'm not. I know it's a subset, but when you see 300 people of all ages dressed in red and black showing up to honor a fallen fellow gangbanger, you come to realize it's a mighty large subset.
She was 17. Not a "little girl".
She was old enough to be hanging out with her friends on a street corner at night when a drive-by shooting took place.
It's entirely possible that she was the intended target. Maybe drug related. She could have been dealing, or working for dealers, or in a gang herself.
No. It was a random shooting. It's very common in my neighborhood for rival gangs to shoot into a crowd with and intent to intimidate. They have no idea who the bullet might hit. read the linked article.
And Hazel, when you're nearing retirement, 17 is a little girl.
Does WaPo ombudsman let the US Olympic pole vault team use his asshole in their training? I think it's worth sending out a few reporters to find out the truth.
Calling someone a "Boer" is the South African equivalent of "cracker."
Don't turn your back on them, either.
I don't hate unions, as a theory. If you can form a worker's union and convince an employer to take you on as a bargaining agent without the need for special gummint protections, go nuts. That's what the right to association and the right to contract are all about.
In practice, however, theory goes out the window on day one. Fuck unions with angry, flaming iron rods.
But Reason contributor Will Wilkinson assured us the Tea Party is racist.
What's a little populist paranoia, casual racism and hyperventilating rhetoric about the holy Founding Document?
Surely Jesse Walker and Matt Welch are wrong!
Look, if Whiney Willie and his Merrie Band of Flaming Douchetarains want to try to claim the mantle of libertarianism, more power to them. But I expect they'll wind up getting more wedgies than votes.

Mr. Alexander, its mighty white of you to think your paper should do some investigating rather than taking a Black Democrat's word for something.
its even more absurd when you consider many of their best QBs were black. when I think of good/decent Eagles QBs I think of Cunningham and McNabb, but lately McNabb has had a streak of getting injured early in the season.
also, I wasn't being sarcastic saying good Eagles QBs, they both were great at different times.
I like McNabb's mom because she's always making soup.
It's not about race. Angelo Cataldi, the morning sports talk host, wanted Ricky Williams instead of Donovan McNabb. He took a pack of jackasses to the draft to cheer for Ricky Williams. Reid took McNabb, and the jackasses booed. Cataldi has never forgiven the Eagles for being right and has hated McNabb his entire career.
That all said, the joke is funny.
