In today's Morning Links, Jesse Walker flagged what he called "the most pathetic attempt you'll see today to tie the Tea Parties to racism." While I am largely ignorant in the comparative qualities of public opinion polling, I do read the sports page every day, and I daresay this snippet of a weekend New York Times timeline of quarterback Donovan McNabb's career may give the Multi-State Survey of Race and Politics a run for its money:

A lot of it is how you define 'racism'. I don't believe it's useful to restrict it to overt hostility and hate because of race. I tend to define it broadly. Racism is if someone is expected to behave or believe a certain way because of their race, this is racism. The only reason hate exists is because of this expectation. The term "Uncle Tom" as used by the Left is racist since it expects Blacks to believe in and support a liberal agenda and considers them traitors if they don't. I doubt many people in slave states in the early 19th century actually hated Blacks. They just expected them to 'know their place', much as many liberals do today.

But we shouldn't place all regard on achieving the other extreme either. Whether a particular word is appropriate is a situational call. I'd say a quotation is one of those situations where you should err on the side of accuracy rather than inoffensiveness though.

Spontaneously shouting, "holy fucking nigger!" (while amusing to some)in a large crowd would be something else. I don't have to endorse the latter to defend the former. And I don't have to equate the latter with what I have just done either.
