Masters of Distraction
Are Republicans "aiding and abetting terrorism" against Democrats over the health care bill?
The mob is furious. And while it hollers about "killing" bills, Republicans stoke the fury by calling on citizens to "target" races in "battleground" states.
Get it? "Target." The violent intentions are palpable.
Most Americans abhor violence, and no serious person has offered excuses or rationalized the actions of the smattering of loons who have threatened politicians who voted for health care reform.
But this campaign of distraction mounted by Democrats meaning to smear millions of Americans involved in legitimate political expression is as transparent as it is distasteful.
The narrative: Fearful underdog Democrats (true if you ignore their notable majorities in both houses of Congress and control of the presidency) are fending off hordes of ferocious, irrational detractors to do what's right.
Democrats insist Republicans must condemn—over and over—this imaginary rise of widespread radicalism. In doing so, they implicitly are accusing Republicans of controlling the aforementioned radicals. Other Democrats, such as House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, went so far as to claim that Republicans are "aiding and abetting terrorism" against Democrats.
For those grappling with history, here's what a "mob" looks like: furious citizens raiding the Bastille, stabbing and decapitating its governor, Marquis Bernard-Rene de Launay, and placing his head on a pike to parade around Paris streets to cheering crowds.
Or, to put it in more contemporary terms, think anti-capitalist, stone-throwing, Starbucks-hating, economic-justice thugs. Or perhaps radical environmentalists who burn down housing projects and research facilities for Mother Earth. For a domestic terrorist, you won't need to go farther than your local Chicago university to spot a Weatherman—sorry, Weatherperson.
And one would think that with all the threats politicians get every year, they would be more serious about whom they accuse.
Rep. Russ Carnahan, for instance, claims that a coffin was displayed near his home, which I will grant would be awfully intimidating—unless, of course, it turned out that the coffin was used in a peaceful political candlelight prayer vigil, as it was. (Go to Google for pictures.)
Maybe Carnahan confused prayer candles for torches.
We also heard terrible (third-hand and unsubstantiated) reports of folks spitting out N-words and F-words at representatives walking through Washington protests. Now, I wouldn't be surprised if it happened. It happens all the time.
"I've received threats since I assumed elected office, not only because of my position but also because I'm Jewish," said House Republican Whip Eric Cantor, who had a bullet shot through his office Monday. "I've never blamed anyone in this body for that, period."
Democrats claim that the "mischaracterizing" of the substance and motives of their health reform legislation generates angry and violent reaction. Well, I suppose that's subjective. There is a strong case to be made that the Republican characterization of Obamacare is far closer to reality than the one offered by Democrats.
The real problem is that tea partyers represent the means of obstruction. They must be discredited, first as robotic foot soldiers of the insurance companies and then as out-of-control and potentially violent mobs.
Neither is true. Or, as the president likes to say, it's just another distraction.

They're in a hole and furiously digging.
Cantor's bullet is bullshit. It fell at an angle such that it must have been an unintentional shot.
It's not democrats inciting this talk, it's the media. And that's not because they have a political agenda, it's because they're giving the people what they want: drama. The more drama, the more viewers; the more viewers, the more money (markets, right?).
If you don't want this kind of media exposure, don't bed with the crazies.

What's bullshit is GMc comments
No, G Mc is right.
We want a better rep? Don't get in bed with crazies that don't even share our views to begin with. Of course, just like in '94, we are SO desperate that we will cling to any group of charlatans that promise "smaller government", who condemn any actions as "socialistic". Our brains shut off, and we lose our critical thinking skills when we need them most.
Just like the left in regards to South American dictatorships, we descend into cognitive dissonance.
Tristan, any government action that isn't small-government oriented, is likely socialistic in nature.
Just watch...The Fairness Doctrine will be the next piece of legislation to silence the opposition. This administration is hellbent on punishing dissenters.
Sure, they can do that; don't mean that anybody will comply. I think Howard Stern will lead the charge against such a piece of legislation; he's a better spokesman than that Limbaugh gasbag.
Some pundit already posted a link to Howard saying he would never vote for a Democrat again - but then Howard says a lot of heavily hyperbolic things. The pundit's point was that this supposedly represented (and I am vague on this) either a demographic shift or perhaps an influential voice that may lead to a demographic shift.
Given the kind of crap the guy used to spew years ago when I was inadvertantly exposed to his entertainment, I'm not sure I buy either of those possible analyses.
You'll love us once you understand us.
And you'll get to see what is in it after we pass it.
Oh grow up. This is bad, but come on.
It all depends on how far the FCC would be granted access towards ladling out political speech. The AM/FM band is one thing, but the fuckers that REALLY want these restrictions on political dissent want to control satellite TV/radio, cable TV, and the internet.
Best bet: Stock up on paper and mechanical printing presses. Movable-type ingots, too. Go back to the old days when flyers were handed out in secret. Because if the bastards on both sides get their wishes, that is what we'll be reduced to - pamphleteering.
For those grappling with history, here's what a "mob" looks like: furious citizens raiding the Bastille, stabbing and decapitating its governor, Marquis Bernard-Rene de Launay, and placing his head on a pike to parade around Paris streets to cheering crowds.
If only...
Let's keep a sense of perspective; would a Reign of Terror be worth it? Remember, the French Revolution was followed by the rise of Napoleon...
I don't think that anybody in the USA would seriously consider violent reprisal in any large numbers. SUre, there will always be nuts, but I don't think that there are 5 million Americans who are ready to revolt. At least not yet.
It is important that politicians know that they make their laws under the constant threat of reprisal.
They may be closer to it than you think
Philadelphia Man Charged for Death Threat Against Cantor
A 33-year-old Philadelphia man was charged Monday with threatening to kill House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) and his family after posting a YouTube video in which he said, among other things, "You receive my bullets," according to the Department of Justice.

Just read about that Grandpa. What I don't get is why anyone cares what these people accuse others of. It's been my experience anything they accuse others of they are doing or about to do. Their accusations outside being advertisements of their own activities are meaningless.
Huh? That made no sense.
Shorter Ratko: Democrats are usually projecting when they toss out accusations of bad behavior.
David, why do the last sentence of your articles get a separate page?
Because he's acting like a douchebag by trying to run up page hits.
I've quit reading the second page of anything Harsanyani writes because of this crap.
Harsanyi owns this site?
Apparently Harsanyi has figured out how to format his articles so they appear as 1.01 pages.
But it's reason.com getting the page hits, not Harsanyi, who is just a guest here.
Wow, an entire article about "aiding and abetting terrorism" the day after a Christian pipe-bomb building anti-gov terror cell was arrested by the DHS/FBI!
The stones it takes!
Congrats!
Yeah, I think that would make for a great article. Sure, they are anti-gov; but, what they would put in it's place would be far worse.
Over all, I find the past two years amusing in a dark sort of way. This is gonna be one wild decade.
The Koch boys have finally just stomped the nuts off the good Reason staff.
"You either hew the GOP=Liberty line or we cut your niblets off"......
KOCHTOPUS!!!!!!
Well, then "Let's call Koch's Bluff".
The past two years would include the first year of the Obama reign. Are you sure you don't want to revise your timeline?
Surely it's more plausible that the curious timing is in reverse -- that is, the government could have probably arrested these assholes for a while, but chose to play their hand now because it would help amplify fears of "right wing terrorism" and detract from criticisms of HCR made by moderates in good faith.
Do you know what plausible means?
I doubt if you do G Mc...
Do you know what "cynical" means?
Damn you, Reason! You sucked me in on the worthless second page thing!
Be honest. You have a pool going, don't you? "How many readers can we fool into clicking '2'? Hah! There's another one! Putz!" I know you do.
My god, shriek, you're obnoxious.
Actually, I rather like him. Then again, I find myself increasingly becoming a "Karl Hess" libertarian.
I'm an Ernst Rhoem libertarian, myself. RHOEMITES
*googles name* I am not amused.
google "underzog site:reason.com". You'll get it.
I'm amused.
How many hits did you get, considering Warty misspelled the name?
Brownshirt! Faggot!
I just read the first few lines in his Wikipedia entry. His mom sounds like a badass.
Va. county GOP's headquarters vandalized
Brick thrown through window of Howell GOP office
Damn terrists are everywhere.
Actually, I rather like him.
This will stop around the 400th time he somehow works the phrase "Christfags" into a discussion that has fuck all to do with Christianity.
Then again, I find myself increasingly becoming a "Karl Hess" libertarian.
Dude, me too. Nevertheless, shriek is tiresome.
In what respects?
He's one of the mythical liberaltarians (i.e. he's a liberal who fancies himself a libertarian).
Better than all-too-real monster of a libertarian-conservative. Besides, liberaltarians aren't mythical, just rare. See Will Wilkinson, Brink Lindsey. But, ultimately, real libertarianism isn't left-wing or right-wing; but, that's becoming increasingly mythical.
Well, Soros is the great 'Liberal-tarian' although he doesn't care what he is called.
Capitalist to the core, drug legal, all social lib, immigration friendly, free thinker, anti-fascist/commie and full time benefactor for all the above causes.
Sounds like a swell guy to me. Sure, people like to hammer on his views of market regulations, but that's kind of petty. What good is all the money in the world if I have no rights? If a government won't respect personal liberty, they sure as hell won't respect economic liberty. Same is true vice versa.
Right-wing nutcases who supported the Bushpigs in 2004 hate Soros for his anti-fascist anti-war, anti-Bush stance.
Best libertarian in the world?
They still hated him.
Please. Soros is a die-hard socialist who loves the welfare state and confiscatory tax rates. I'm sorry to have to disabuse you of your notion that everyone who disagrees with you is a Bush supporter. We all outgrow our security blankets someday.
You're completely full of shit.
I have followed Soros and Rogers investment advice for years - and read three of his books.
He is no socialist. Quote his books - it should be easy.
I won't wait for your buffoonry.
George Soros is a man that looted the houses of Jews sent to the death camps. And he says he do it again.
yes, George Soros is worse than most socialists. despite talking about "open society" and stuff, he's all in for censorship, and politicians he supports in Eastern Europe are the worst brand of neototalitarians.
Mr. Soros is indeed 100% for socialism. He believes that the rich and "smart" should control everything. his books about investing are just about how to make money. Not what he believes about the common folk.
You have a head on your shoulders, Jordan. That's getting to be a bit of rarity these days.
Yes and he's a big believer in gun control as well.
He financially supports gun control groups.
Okay, fine, that's one strike. I think his support for other causes counterbalances that.
Besides, the gun rights lobby is well-funded. So, chill.
Shrike,
You're getting more annoying than Tony.
And I think I am going to have to start calling you Olberdumb Jr., as your continue to live out the Bush-hate a year after he is out of office. Try moving on...
What good are rights to do stuff, if you aren't allowed to use money in the process of doing them?
No, he's the ranking member of the Illuminati in North America, unless Steve Jobs has him assassinated.
In other secret society news, BBC (Brotherhood of Bearded Celebrities) President Bob Seager has announced that they are prepared to take revenge on mustachioed heretic Burt Reynolds for the assassination of BBC big shot Billy Mays.
"Soros" and "capitalist" don't go together.
Besides, liberaltarians aren't mythical, just rare. See Will Wilkinson, Brink Lindsey.
LOL!
Karl Hess was not a "left-libertarian" he was an anarchist(after that little career as a GOP speech writer). Hess' embrace of left-anarchist(NOT left-libertarian) lifestyle choices was kinda coerced by the US government when they stripped him of all property rights
Karl Hess was all over the place when it came to politics. I loved his writing & was one colorful character, but his views changed form one week to the next.
Hey - I only pull "Christfags" out for the theocrat anti-gay, anti-stem cell, anti-Darwin, anti-futurist, anti-human types!
Its been months!!!
Good article. I was hoping that someone, somewhere would write about this.
Meh
Jesus Christ on a stick, Reason sure never lets an occasion pass to defend the GOP, or to make sure we know everything is equivalent (tie goes to the GOP of course).
Go to any story linked by Drudge that has a comments section. The posts that aren't advocating violent revolution are the exception. Even this place turns out the armchair freedom fighters on a regular basis.
The Repubs really, really don't like being out of power, and nobody who's paid any attention to reality can say they haven't been stoking fear and paranoia. Every thing this administration does is a government takeover or an unprecedented threat to liberty; no hyperbole goes too far. Do you listen to Beck and Limbaugh? Scaring stupid people is the main MO of the GOP and they are working overtime now.
I listen to Ed Schultz; he is one fucked-up motherfucker.
Right on cue. Good boy.
A legit point; when Bush was in office, they were savage to the GOP and Democrats. Now they are soft on the GOP. What gives?
Power. The GOP can't accomplish shit right now. The absolute best scenario after this fall is a complete lockdown. GOP with just under two-thirds in the House, and 53ish in the Senate.
Exactly. When Bush was in office, we had a Republican president and Democratic congress (last 2 years anyway). Some of the most egregious laws during his administration were passed with bi-partisan support. Now the Democrats own both the executive and legislative branches.
a 100 seat House switch? LAMO
What planet do you live on?
May I take your money on Intrade?
Absolute best scenario, not most realistic. Use the money for some reading comprehension classes.
What species do belong to?
Power, and rhetoric. All a minority party has is the power to occasionally stop a bill (which we like) and to talk a good game (which, when the Repubs are on the outs, is small-government rhetoric).
Besides, there's only so many pixels, and by the time you get down hammering on the Dems these days, there aren't many left.
I like all bills stopped. That's why I believe a very partisan general attitude and a fairly even split of power is the best we can ever hope for. Any time they get anything "done" it's at our expense, it's always best when they get nothing done.
I think the partisan attitude sometimes gets bills passed, though. But I harbor no delusions that a calm and rational discussion of facts would have prevented some version of this bill from getting through.
Doesn't change the fact that the only thing the GOP has in common with libertarians is the rhetoric of low taxes and softer regulation. On all other fronts they are basically fascists. (I'd include their tax and regulation ideas part and parcel, but whatever.)
A fact that is buried under all the noise right now; Beck being the primary culprit, pushing the old Buckleyite "fusionist" bullshit.
Sooner or later, this fact will come to light once more, but a lot of damage will have been done since then. In any case, it really doesn't matter. In the meantime, I'm more interested in when this stupid war ends and getting our civil liberties back. Once that happens, I'll start doing economics stuff.
Oh, come now. The GOP is many things, but they're hardly "fascists". True also for the democrats. Remember the victims who suffered under real fascists.
Conservatives (repuatable ones, anyways) embrace libertarians for sharing MOST of their values. FOX news will occasinoally invite Nick Gillespie and Matt Welch to discuss a number of issues. John Stossel is a FBN employee now. The few major differences (gay marriage, drug legalization) aren't quite enough for both sides from sharing a larger, common goal.
It's not the responsibility of Reason staff or libertarians to be "equal opportunity haters". But I've been following the likes of John Stossel for some time now, and they were reliably consistent in criticizing both sides, without resorting to "Bush / Obama is the next Hitler!"
The Republicans at least make room for libertarians. There's a certain level of civility and respect. The progressives, on the other hand, hate and scorn anyone who doesn't think exactly like them, especially when it comes to economic policy. Talk deregulation and a progressive will FREAK THE FUCK OUT on you. They will start screaming and calling you a capitalist facist tools, or some such. The reaction from Republicans when you advocate drug legalization or immigration reform is FAR LESS offensive.
I vote Dem, and will listen to any reasonable argument, if the argument is reasonable. Dereg works, when it does, but not if you just flip the switch and say "trust the system."
Well said.
Dereg Regulation works, when it does, but not if you just flip the switch and say "trust the system."
Anyone care to make the argument that a new regulatory regime isn't a new "system" that we should just "trust" once the "switch is flipped"?
The Republicans at least make room for libertarians. There's a certain level of civility and respect.
Go talk to a Republican about civil liberties and see how that works out.
The reaction from Republicans when you advocate drug legalization or immigration reform is FAR LESS offensive.
I live a few thousand miles from the Mexican border, and I know a bunch of people who are constantly talking about how we should put machine gun nests on the border and gun down anything that moves.
On the most recent major civil liberties case, the Democrat President publically castigated the Supreme Court for taking an expansive view of 1st amendment protections, which garnered great approval from the Dem side of the aisle.
The Left gets better PR on civil liberties than they deserve.
And if anyone claims otherwise I'd rip them to shreds. But I don't see anyone here claiming that, so I was just destroying his fantasy about the GOP being civil.
Funny: I know the same kinds of people, only they talk about militarizing the border with Georgia to keep out those filthy Red Staters.
this is 100% true. just last night I got in a huge fight with my gf because I'm a libertarian and she's an unnamed-view-that-looks-a-lot-like-liberal-to-me. Essentially, there's no room in her world view for anyone who doesn't agree with her, whereas I really don't have any problem with her having different (and often "wrong") views, in my opinion.
Tony, how the fuck you can put libertarian and fascist on the same level, is proof of your ineptitude.
Because on most issues the GOP is not ideologically opposed to reason's belief system just practically. The Dems don't govern how reason would like and they actively loathe libertarianism as well.
Exactly. The Republicans are just cynical cowards who will compromise their beliefs for the sake of political expediency. The Democrats are actively hostile to major parts of the libertarian program.
Now that is just some bullshit.
Tristan, name all of the pro-growth, limited-government Democrats. I have provided a space below.
[ ]
The Dems like to scare people too, Tony. They're just as good at getting gullible people to support then as the GOP... just in different ways.
Actually, the Dems have an extra angle: Vote for us, and you'll get free cash straight from a fat rich white man's pocket.
What utter bullshit some people believe.
Plus, Grandpa nails it below.
"Don't you men have homes?"
I live in a beautiful brown sided cardboard box near the dumpsters in the alley behind a Chinese restaurant. It's always a convenience living near a food market.
OK at this point it's obvious he's writing one extra line so the article will be 2 pages just to screw with us.
While I have noticed this one line on the second page thing has happened a few times I fail to understand what the big deal is. Are your connections so slow, or irritabilities so sensitive that it's that big of deal?
It's like trying to lift a huge suitcase you think is packed full, but isn't. The "2" keeps making me think that there's more depth to the article and it's rather jarring to have just one sentence waiting. Since more ad revenue means free access for me I usually forgo complaining but I do sympathize with the others above.
A Net Zero comrade?
Not me. I prefer to get online the same day I log in.
I bet this happens because these columns are originally written for an old-fashioned newspaper that's actually printed on paper, and hence are tuned to a standard number of characters.
Thats what i was thinking. I'll bet the author has very little to do with how many pages the article has on the internet.
Yes. AT&T 3G in NYC is a nightmare, Edge is sometimes better.
Plus it's just plain annoying for three words.
Most Americans abhor violence,
How can you take seriously an article with such a ludicrous unsupported assertion trotted out just to get things rolling?
Well, most Americans abhor direct involvement with violence. It's fine if it's on TV or in sports or perpetrated by our military/police on furriners/criminals.
What I was going to say.
Truth is, most Progressives hate and fear Republicans more than they do Al Qaeda.
The Tea Baggers couldn't freak them out any more if they were wearing turbans and screaming Allahu Akbar.
Progs think both are true of tea partiers
Targeting primary races and other such expressions are common vernacular and have nothing with violent acts. Threats against politicians are common any given year against both Democrats and Republicans. The Democrats are trying to demonize and scapegoat white Christian conservatives to play the big race card this Fall.
The raid today on an alleged right wing christian extremist group was timed to whip up race hatred. They are attempting to polarize minorities against the white majority to increase turnout and discourage white or conservative turnout.
They know they cant use the tricks they used to pass healthcare to pass the next socialist bill. If they can generate hate to divide and distract citizens, they hope the Tea Party express wont be able to adequately whip up opposition to these bills.
The RNC is completely hopeless, instead of exploiting the momentum and high ground of the Health Care bill opposition they are letting it fizzle. I would almost say they are selling out once again.
The raid today on an alleged right wing christian extremist group was timed to whip up race hatred. They are attempting to polarize minorities against the white majority to increase turnout and discourage white or conservative turnout.
You are the reason they get to say these things credibly. Please never talk in the presence of a camera.
It's quite a sad reflection, and an unfortunate certainty, that the two major political parties enjoy so much public spite. Even worse, much of it is directed at citizens not privy to the true direction of the other's political thought.
At any rate, it's broken itself down into a cultural war. One side that seems to think itself safer under the care of government, and the other only wishing that same government to advance it's own morals. Surprisingly (and happily) more and more, you hear formerly uninterested individuals look to freedom as told by the Bastiats and Hayeks of the world.
It's a refreshing change to hear people talking about true freedom and what that means. Most of all, I'm glad not to have political discussions turn into "Dude, you're an anarchist..." tripe. I actually had someone ask me to borrow "The Road to Serfdom" yesterday. He will get it, and I only hope he gets it too.
Anyway, glad to be here, thanks for listening.
We get what we deserve.
Exactly my point, we should be cynical of both and dismissive of both.
The prospect of violence was conjured up by Nancy Peosi last September. She employed an oft used line by mafiosi when visiting a store and warning what shame it would be if something happened to this fine establishment. Here's another case of people practiced at inciting violence who dishonestly ponder how such a thing could have happened.
Remember in November.
It also worth noting the character who threatened Eric Cantor is a donor to obama and the DNC:
http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-.....amp;page;=
The more them democrats protest, the more dubious their position becomes.
As I expected, the only person identified as someone breaking a Democratic Congresspersons' window is a Democratic employee. A Rev. Sharpton/Tawana Brawley style hoax? http://www.denverpost.com/commented/ci_13203950
Not according to some news sources. Like this very fucking website.
False-flag attack, self-imposed. Very clever.
So, liberals... it's justified when Code Pink shouts down Karl Rove*, but it's wrong when anyone right-of-center shouts down a Dem at a town-hall meeting. Right?
* Fuck Karl Rove; it's the principle of the thing.
Leftover statists plan to disrupt Tea Parties

A bullet that hit a window in Republican U.S. Rep. Eric Cantor's office building appears to have been fired randomly into the air, police said Thursday.
The Republicans at least make room for libertarians. There's a certain level of civility and respect.
Go lurk around FreeRepublic sometime, and see how many Rs there embrace libertarianism.
even if republicans are abetting violence against democrats.........two things are sure.
FIRST...IT IS A FIGMENT OF THEIR IMAGINATION AND...
SECOND, IT'S ABOUT TIME.
JUST REMEMBER THE ACORN APES

Beer and wine kisumu 2 possess a small amount of methyl alcohol, also known as fuel line antifreeze along with cook oven fuel. It is just a harmless quantity in ale and wine beverage but when distilled atmbt sapatu the wrong temp a dangerous amount of methyl alchol can be done.
