Take Care of Business: Reason Saves Cleveland With Drew Carey, Ep. 4

 

After World War II, Cleveland was booming, thanks to its leadership role in heavy industry and a business-friendly climate. Today, the city's high taxes and onerous regulatory demands make it nearly impossible for new businesses to set up shop while choking the life out of existing companies. While relatively laissez-faire cities such as Houston are growing even during the current recession, Cleveland remains stuck in a rut. How can city officials make the city a more welcoming place for entrepreneurs to thrive?

Reason Saves Cleveland with Drew Carey is written and produced by Paul Feine; camera and editing by Roger Richards and Alex Manning; narrated by Nick Gillespie; music by the Cleveland band Cats on Holiday. This is the fourth of six episodes that will air March 15-19, 2010.

Well done again. Loved Councilman Douchebag who helped break through the wall, after a decade of persistence by the local businessman, and "made it happen" in 18 months. Man, you're, like, The Jacket of City Council, Councilman Douchebag!

Not. The Councilman's utter cluelessness was disturbing, and yet entertaining. I don't know whether to congratulate Mr. Businessperson for his persistence, or slap him upside the head for fighting City Hall for TEN YEARS rather than packing it in and setting up shop somewhere else that would love to have him.

Can't wait for Episode 5!

You guys hit a home run with these. One suggestion: isn't it possible to put clickable hotspots (annotations or something) in the videos? Couldn't you put one at the end of each video that allows people to jump to the other ones in the series?

Bah, I've been in Cleveland 10 years, and I don't know what is worse, the corrupt city leaders or the morons that keep on re-electing them. We have lake front property that is made up of a homeless shelters, and warehouses, and a strip district that is defunct. People own the land and are ready to build but can't until the right palms are greased.

Look up the medical mart in Cleveland. They were talking about it for at least 5 years, 3 years ago they increased the sales taxes to pay for it. Since then, they've been collecting all the sales taxes for it while they 'find the right spot for it'. Over this time, the usual suspects in Cleveland have been wetting their beaks off the money for 'consulting' services. Meanwhile nothing has been done, and now we are in a 3 way race between Nashville and New York who already has committed tenants. Regardless, if Cleveland did build it, I think it would be run so badly it wouldn't even be worth it.

Look at the Ameritrust deal where they bought a building and removed asbestos from it costing millions (now aptly named the Asbestos Palace), and they can't get rid of the thing and it will most likely sell for a fraction of the cost of purchase and cleanup. Again, a couple of people involved with that deal have been linked with the corruption cases.

Look at the Euclid corridor mess. Millions spent to put a bus lane down the middle of Euclid avenue (and already the pavement is crumbling on it, great job). Now it just inconveniences anyone who wants to drive to a location on the other side of the road who can't because of the bus lane in the middle. I have to drive an extra mile because I have to go past where I want to go , U turn and come back. Tools.

Seriously, these videos are all well and good but none of it will get any traction until the corruption is cleaned up and these assholes stop pissing money away.

That's two videos now where unions have been a fundamental problem in kick starting Cleveland. How are those manufacturing union jobs from the 70's working out for you?

My only point is that if you take the Bible straight, as I'm sure many of Reasons readers do, you will see a lot of the Old Testament stuff as absolutely insane. Even some cursory knowledge of Hebrew and doing some mathematics and logic will tell you that you really won't get the full deal by just doing regular skill english reading for those books. In other words, there's more to the books of the Bible than most will ever grasp. I'm not concerned that Mr. Crumb will go to hell or anything crazy like that! It's just that he, like many types of religionists, seems to take it literally, take it straight...the Bible's books were not written by straight laced divinity students in 3 piece suits who white wash religious beliefs as if God made them with clothes on...the Bible's books were written by people with very different mindsets...in order to really get the Books of the Bible, you have to cultivate such a mindset, it's literally a labyrinth, that's no joke.
