The mounting anger and hatred, coursing through the bloodstream of the body politic, make violence and counter-violence inevitable. Brace yourself. The American empire is over. And the descent is going to be horrifying. […]
"I think it is possible, I do not say it is probable, that we will have a revolution, a civil war that will see the end of the United States of America[,]" [said former New York Times tax reporter David Cay Johnston]. […] "If we end up with violence in the streets on a large scale, not random riots, but insurrection and things break down, there will be a coup d'état[.]" […]
How do we resist? How, if this descent is inevitable, as I believe it is, do we fight back? […]
Camus wrote that "one of the only coherent philosophical positions is revolt. It is a constant confrontation between man and his obscurity. It is not aspiration, for it is devoid of hope. That revolt is the certainty of a crushing fate, without the resignation that ought to accompany it." […]
[W]e are not slaves. We have a choice. We can refuse to be either a victim or an executioner. We have the moral capacity to say no, to refuse to cooperate. Any boycott or demonstration, any occupation or sit-in, any strike, any act of obstruction or sabotage, any refusal to pay taxes, any fast, any popular movement and any act of civil disobedience ignites the soul of the rebel and exposes the dead hand of authority.
Ha ha, yeah, it's not a Tea Party guy, but lefty war correspondent Chris Hedges, who is pretty lucky he doesn't live in Oregon. I can't decide whether the intro to this remarkable rant is more a call to arms or a cry for help:
There are no constraints left to halt America's slide into a totalitarian capitalism. Electoral politics are a sham. The media have been debased and defanged by corporate owners. The working class has been impoverished and is now being plunged into profound despair. The legal system has been corrupted to serve corporate interests. Popular institutions, from labor unions to political parties, have been destroyed or emasculated by corporate power. And any form of protest, no matter how tepid, is blocked by an internal security apparatus that is starting to rival that of the East German secret police. The mounting anger and hatred, coursing through the bloodstream of the body politic, make violence and counter-violence inevitable. Brace yourself. The American empire is over. And the descent is going to be horrifying.
Those singled out as internal enemies will include people of color, immigrants, gays, intellectuals, feminists, Jews, Muslims, union leaders and those defined as "liberals." They will be condemned as anti-American and blamed for our decline. The economic collapse, which remains mysterious and enigmatic to most Americans, will be pinned by demagogues and hatemongers on these hapless scapegoats. And the random acts of violence, which are already leaping up around the fringes of American society, will justify harsh measures of internal control that will snuff out the final vestiges of our democracy. The corporate forces that destroyed the country will use the information systems they control to mask their culpability. The old game of blaming the weak and the marginal, a staple of despotic regimes, will empower the dark undercurrents of sadism and violence within American society and deflect attention from the corporate vampires that have drained the blood of the country.
Hedges, who is so marginalized by the corporate forces who control our information systems that a quote of his was used as the start of this year's Oscar winner for Best Picture, will, without a doubt, hear not one word of oppobrium from the same thick chunk of the commentariat that has spent much of the last nine months warning about the imminent outbreak of carnage whipped up by Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, and the Tea Party movement. It's one thing to call for open "revolt" and "sabotage" in order to "fight back" against the, uh, totalitarian capitalists…but criticizing the growth of government? That's incitement to violence.

Yeah, I chuckled to myself when I read that. What a twisted mind it must be to conceive of that and to find a place for it in your mental model of how the world works!
Wow that is quite a rant. I think this is the result of two things. First, it is dawning on him and other liberals they are not getting a pony even though Obama got elected. And second, they are starting to realize that 2008 was not 1932, where a Democratic President gets to drag the country left because the previous Republican President got blamed for an economic downturn, but instead 2008 was 1928, and it is the Democratic President who is going to get the blame.
He looks like a smug French socialist with Down syndrome. Note I did not use the "R" word. I pity the fool that says retarded. So in essence, I pity myself.
I could forgive the man if he actually wrote well. What a clusterfuck of cliches, banalities and nonsense. One of the worst aspects of it is that it's completely lacking any sort of passion. The enthusiasm he musters seems Naderish: covering up his own confusion with hyperbole.
Good Lord. Did that slip over from some alternate universe or something, where the levers of power aren't held by lefty-lib radical chic types? Seriously, he gibbers on like the people he says will be siccing the jackboots on hapless protesters aren't the very same people he goes to cocktail parties with.
Leftists never have enough power. Whenever their policies fail, and they always do, it can never be admitted that the policies are at fault. Instead, it is the result of saboteurs and hoarders and counter revolutionaries and such. The cause is never wrong. As a result, the left never has enough power and will always find someone to blame for its failures, regardless of how powerless that person is.
What the fuck is up with all that blurred background shit? Is this supposed to make him look like a man of action? Look-at-this-fucking-hipster is calling, and he should answer. I affirm the motion to face-punch and would add that he needs a cock-punching as well.
What's disturbing is how the extreme left will react after failing to impose much of its agenda on the rest of us after controlling the government. I expect some serious disenchantment with our republic and how it's structured.
How demented do you have to be to actually create a rant like that when your fellow teammates hold most of the power right now? Maybe he just re-read V for Vengeance and got confused as to which is the real world.
He doesn't see it that way. In his mind no one in power is ever pure enough. Obama is not a liberal. No one in the government is a real liberal. They are just impostors who have hijacked the cause.
When you read this rant, you can see how the Communists ended up killing so many people. Think about it, in the mid 1930s the Communists owned Russia. Yet, they still were grabbing and imprisoning and killing millions all in the name of internal security. The whole system is built on there being an enemy, a cause, something to be destroyed. That is easy when you are not in power. But once in power, it gets harder. So, you start thinking you really are not in power. The people who claim to be on your side are really impostors, counter revolutionaries and such.
I'm distressed to think that a number of people think mere control of the government isn't enough. The opposition simply has to go. Including those who are heretics within the party.
No. Most people don't know anything about history. And everyone on both sides is subject to the temptation to believe that if only they always got their way over everyone else, things would be better.
Pro Lib, I definitely do not want the opposition to go; an adversarial system is always the best as it tends keep things in check. Dynamics wanting to maintain equilibrium and all.
The heretics as you say serve probably the most important function: questioning the status quo and in theory should mitigate the majority from excess.
At least in theory, as the human element is such a pesky variable.
Democracy sucks. Sometimes people run themselves over a cliff. But that beats an authoritarian government were the people are always run off of a cliff.
I never trust people that work too hard to shut down opposition. Ridicule is one thing, attacking a system that allows you to be opposed is another.
It's like with this healthcare business. While I'd like some real reform, since that isn't on the table, I'm perfectly happy with pure "obstructionism." That's right--stop the fucking bill. Just stop it. Don't compromise, where compromise isn't a rational option. Don't try to act all bipartisany. Just end the nonsense.
It's like Ferrero said - for a democracy to work, everyone has to buy into the basic notions of legitimate peaceful transfers of power, and a 'loyal opposition.'
The Republicans were really bad with this too - all that talk of a 'permanent majority' was seriously bad mojo.
"Those singled out as internal enemies will include people of color, immigrants, gays, intellectuals, feminists, Jews, Muslims, union leaders and those defined as "liberals." They will be condemned as anti-American and blamed for our decline. "
I hate to break it to this guy but the left is doing a pretty good job of singling out jewish people as both "internal enemies" and external.
There is a part of me that thinks perhaps a little political bloodshed wouldnt be a bad thing if it puts guys like him at room temperature.

Blaming our corporate overlords is silly, but I agree that trying to engage our leaders via two party politics is increasingly seen as futile buy more and more people.

Isn't that why why wars make the people in power more powerful? Because it engages people in the political process, even the opposition? ...and that engagement translates into legitimacy?

You mean like suggesting that Tony keeps the withered husks of his former lovers in the attic so that they can still whisper to him about how great the government is?
"Brace yourself. The American empire leftist monopoly on self-righteous indignation and public tantrums is over. And the descent is going to be horrifying."
Fixed that.
Of course, it never occurs to the lefty tin-foil hatters that the answer to corporatism is a less powerful state.
Noooooo, we need an all-powerful state to crush any and all impure urges.
How do leftwing voters reconcile their antipathy towards corporations with the fact that virtually every major politician in the Democratic Party is every bit as supported by big, evil corporations as their counterparts in the GOP?
They don't. They just pretend it is not true. They really live in their own reality where the government is always looking out for the little guy (and when it isn't it is because some evil conservative is in charge) and the Democratic Party is constantly at war trying to save the American people from the evil corporations.
It is just astounding. They just don't consider facts (like yours or the fact that corporations provide millions of people with their livelihoods) that run counter to the narrative.
Damn names. Teaches me not to troll. And Pro, they believe that the same way Hollywood liberals pat themselves on the back for fighting the establishment by being liberal.
Here in Virginia, Gov. McDonnell (R) just backpedalled on his administrations attempts to strip employment discrimination protection from state workers. Why? Not because of the protests from the college kids. Probably not because of a well-deserved mocking from Jon Stewart. Almost certainly because Northrup Grumman might relocate their HQ to nearby, less gay-unfriendly Maryland because of Virginia's draconian anti-gay laws. It's fun watching the local lefties' heads explode when you point out to them that McDonnell was brought to heel by an Evil Corporation(tm) and a Defense Contractor at that!
We've been arguing that being inclusive of gay people is good business for years. It leaves the righties forced to admit there's only one thing going on in their anti-gay pursuit: invidious religiously-based discrimination.
"They will be condemned as anti-American and blamed for our decline. The economic collapse, which remains mysterious and enigmatic to most Americans, will be pinned by demagogues and hatemongers on these hapless scapegoats."
Translation, some hate studies programs will be cut and some public employee union members will lose their jobs.
The mounting anger and hatred, coursing through the bloodstream of the body politic, make violence and counter-violence inevitable. Brace yourself. The American empire is over. And the descent is going to be horrifying.
Holy crap. Friday Night Fights is finally back. The revolution will be televised! Hells yeah!
That is some epic hyperbole there. I was just worried about the next economic black eye (it's coming), but, no, we're gonna have some good, old-fashioned street violence. "It's inevitable."
I love it when hardcore leftists rant and rave about violence in the streets, like they're gonna be doing anything but whimpering in fear and cowering under a bed somewhere. Hedges better hope the revolution doesn't show up in the form he think sit will, because he'll be a casualty in about .08 seconds.
T, a poster too cowardly to post with his actual name, obviously is unaware of Hedges' two decades as a war correspondent. It takes no courage to hurl invective from the anonymity of a nom d' Internet, unlike Hedges who repeatedly risked his life in war zones.
Try reading Hedges latest book, which whether you agree with it or not is a thoughtful examination of the illusions of power among the powers that be.
"I think it is possible, I do not say it is probable, that we will have a revolution, a civil war that will see the end of the United States of America[,]"
And though a former journalist with the New York Times, I have less perspective about what is going on in my country than a retarded fetus sedated before being scraped.
T, a poster too cowardly to post with his actual name
And, brother, my anonymity is a greater favor to you than you could possibly appreciate.
The thing that really annoys me about DCJ's post above, he assumes I'm suppose to ignore the crazy ass rantings of a journalist (The old game of blaming the weak and the marginal, a staple of despotic regimes, will empower the dark undercurrents of sadism and violence within American society and deflect attention from the corporate vampires booga! booga! booga!) because he once wrote a book that was 'thoughtful','complex', and 'nuanced'. As if, the book length work isn't a screed of pure self consciousness where the author isn't aware every minute he puts into it that it's content is what his reputation will be built upon. The 'thoughtful','complex', 'nuanced' nonfiction work is every bit a genre as fantasy, science-fiction and detective stories only less flexible in what it's adherents allow for content. Even Krugman and Thomas Friedman have had a couple of those in their system they managed to eek out, and build their reputations on.
However, those works like From Beirut to Jerusalem are the exception to the stupefying banality and less than Hayekan levels of analysis they put out on a day to day basis because they served the need to satisfy a checklist built into the genre.
I'm not going to dismiss the thing that is in front of me this pathetic shitscreed Chris Hedges wrote for Truthdig because he is capable of something better. Most everyone is capable of something better than this.
However, those works like From Beirut to Jerusalem are the exception to the stupefying banality and less than Hayekan levels of analysis they put out on a day to day basis, and are a less accurate measure of their accomplishment because they served the need to satisfy a checklist built into the genre.
Apparently I'm in some bizarro universe where one lefty's fantasies about violent revolution count more than the daily selfsame ranting from tea partiers everywhere.
Apparently I'm in some bizarro universe where one lefty's fantasies about violent revolution count more than the daily selfsame ranting from tea partiers everywhere a huge turd with feet.
Yeah, cuz the tea partiers have advocated so much violence. And they've carried out attack after attack on helpless union members who just want to be left alone.
I ran across an amusing graphic showing the Big Lebowski characters and their respective D&D alignments which I posted at Urkobold. The Dude is true neutral, of course.
Hedges can be interesting to read, and by interesting, I mean in a mental car wreck sort of way. He reminds me of Dennis The Peasant from Monty Python's Holy Grail, always looking out for ways he's being oppressed. For him, corporations are always guilty in advance. Of course, this screed is on TurthDig.com, where you can be further oppressed by the advertisements on the side of the page.
P.S. Hedges also reminds me of a slightly more eloquent version of "Tim Robbins", from "Team America: World Police". I think there will come a day when that movie is considered a documentary and not fiction.
I'll never understand the fashion statement of drink shitty beer.
I've seen 12-packs of Pabst for $2.50, and have experienced periods of my life wherein said discovery was a joy beyond measure. There's at least part of the allure. Plus, the morning after the night before, it makes for a pretty refreshing hair-of-the-dog breakfast.
That said, i have not intentionally drunk PBR since passing the quarter-century mark.
Sweet'n'Low, what if they've spent all their potentially-better-beer-buying money on living in Brooklyn? I'm not trying to defend hipsters, i'm just saying.
Last time I checked, most of the Americans who still called themselves "rebels" were the sort of people who prominently displayed the Stars and Bars. Not exactly the type of "rebel" he has in mind, then again, they are the type with most of the guns.
As a libertarian anarchist, I see a lot of truth in that rant. "Corporate totalitarianism" is not an oxymoron, it's a reality that existed in fascist Italy and Germany.
I think Chris Hedges is great. He's a strongly anti-authoritarian leftist, who should be getting the support of libertarians, not this snotty attack from Matt Welch.
"totalitarian capitalists"
It takes a special kind of imbecile to put those two words together.
Yeah, I chuckled to myself when I read that. What a twisted mind it must be to conceive of that and to find a place for it in your mental model of how the world works!
Freedom = slavery. Up is down. Jimmy Fallon is funny.
I can't wait for the rioting. I need a new laptop.

That looks like Alton Brown, if he were a smug, French socialist. Or maybe it's my dilated eyes.
He looks like a smug French socialist with Down syndrome. Note I did not use the "R" word. I pity the fool that says retarded. So in essence, I pity myself.
The dude should sign an agreement to appear on Good Eats as Alton's French-raised, evil twin. To go with the biker dude. Make that triplets.

Occam's John:
The right people, at the right time, should be in power.
It's a fool's errand: it never seems to materialize.
And when it doesn't it is always someone else's fault.
In other words: "Leave Obama Alooooone!"
That face is a definite "9" on the punchability scale.
Yeah, but the popped collar makes him a perfect 10.
Ditto Chris...
No, 11.
backpfeifengesicht for sure

Yes. The US will be deemed ungovernable. You can already see that on the soft left with Thomas Friedman's love affair with China.
I remember when he was still in love with me. (sniff, sniff)
If you hadn't been unfaithful with that slut capitalism, I still would be.
How demented do you have to be to actually create a rant like that when your fellow teammates hold most of the power right now? Maybe he just re-read V for Vengeance and got confused as to which is the real world.

Isn't it odd that the melodrama of the Clinton impeachment now seems like a great time to me? Life was good when DC ground to a halt.
Gridlock, shutting down the government, spending lots of time on an impeachment--good times, man, good times.
Gillespie's jacket could take this guy's any day.
You say you want a revolution?
Well you know...
Quoting Camus is crypto-capitalist. Bad commie, no death camp.
Will you heed this man's call to arms?
Does he have arms? That jacket hangs on him like he doesn't.

You can follow this phrase with anything, and never be proven wrong, whatever happens. Perfect journo-speak.
Like "created and/or saved", a tautology.
"There are no constraints left to halt America's slide into a totalitarian capitalism. ... internal security apparatus that is starting to rival that of the East German secret police."

Are you sure about that?

nevermind, need coffee.
Actually, the East German government referred to it as the "anti-capitalist wall of protection."
Only a person entirely ignorant of East Germany's history and the all-encompassing pervasiveness of its internal security apparatus could make the comparison Hedges makes. What an utter buffoon.

Note to Tony: Be careful masturbating over the linked article. When blood comes out, it's time to stop.
Was that really necessary? Honestly. Do I have to have the vision in my head?
Whatever, John. I just said what we were all thinking.
Yeah but until you wrote it down, I was able to suppress the vision. Now it won't go away.
I'm pretty sure this guy IS Tony.
OK, I laughed out loud upon reading this...brutal.
Saccharin Man, I am sorely disappointed you had no horrible links or even Catherine Denueve (sp?) jokes handy.
I am sure there is a "six degrees of separation" to link Tony, The Hunger, and Statism in only the colorful way that is you.
You mean like suggesting that Tony keeps the withered husks of his former lovers in the attic so that they can still whisper to him about how great the government is?
Sounds about right. Don't forget the sound of fisting an opened jar of mayo.
How could I?
The working class has been impoverished and is now being plunged into profound despair.
He knows this, I suspect, from hanging around in bars where the martinis cost eighteen dollars, and Pabst Blue Ribbon cannot be had for any price.
I thought it could be had ironically? Or did that go the way of the hipster trucker hat?
Garbled reports from Brooklyn indicate they may be moving on to Mickey's Big Mouth.

Every so often I pick up a six of Mickey's Big Mouths for a party. But I freely admit it's a nostalgia thing for me and a couple of my buddies.
Yeah, not so fast. None of the pubs in Boston seem to serve PBR, but every bar in Cambridge between Harvard and MIT has it.

It is just astounding. They just don't consider facts (like yours or the fact that corporations provide millions of people with their livelihoods) that run counter to the narrative.
How? Fingers in ears, LALALALALALALA...
Oh, and tune in to Hyperolberman and Madcow, to get tomorrow's marching orders.
I've never understood discrimination against anybody from a business perspective. Why wouldn't you want the largest possible customer base?
I can't believe it's not butter!
I don't think so. We shall see.
The way it will go down.
I, for one, welcome our new Lederhosened, well-racked, beer-swilling overlords.
Mmmm - German bar babes.
They tuk rr PBR Bitburger!
Revolutionary talk from a guy who obviously had his lunch money stolen everyday of school.
"criticizing the growth of government"
Yep, that's all the tea partiers are about.
He hath arrived.
Preach to us your wisdom!

Look everybody, I'm David Cay Johnston
"I think it is possible, I do not say it is probable, that we will have a revolution, a civil war that will see the end of the United States of America[,]"
And though a former journalist with the New York Times, I have less perspective about what is going on in my country than a retarded fetus sedated before being scraped.

Most everyone is capable of something better than this.
ugh, mangled in the editing
However, those works like From Beirut to Jerusalem are the exception to the stupefying banality and less than Hayekan levels of analysis they put out on a day to day basis, and are a less accurate measure of their accomplishment because they served the need to satisfy a checklist built into the genre.
Shut the fuck up, Tony, you're out of your element.
He's a nihilist.
Oh, so you noticed that too?
I lol'd, sage. Nicely played.
Yeah, cuz the tea partiers have advocated so much violence. And they've carried out attack after attack on helpless union members who just want to be left alone.
Wait. Stop. Reverse it.
Hey! You got capitalism on my government!
You got government on my capitalism!
Mmmm...America.
A nihilist, JW? Fuck me. Say what you want about the tenets of socialism, at least it's an ethos.
That rug really tied the room together.
I ran across an amusing graphic showing the Big Lebowski characters and their respective D&D alignments which I posted at Urkobold. The Dude is true neutral, of course.
Walter had to be lawful good. No way would a chaotic good want to shoot someone over a foot fault.
I think the shooting part is what makes him chaotic, John. A lawful guy would use due process.
Lawful, yes. Good, not so much.
Everyone's a critic.
Good? Bad? I'm the guy with the gun.

Hopefully, especially the part where Michael Moore gets blown up in an explosion of ham and sausage.
My complaint is with the loathsome hipster. If you can afford to live in Brooklyn, you can afford better fucking beer.
Come on man. If you are young, hip and politically aware, you have to bond with the common man by drinking his beer.
Didn't work for Oblahma, John.
Remember the Beer Summit?
Sweet'n'Low, what if they've spent all their potentially-better-beer-buying money on living in Brooklyn? I'm not trying to defend hipsters, i'm just saying.

The average hipsters spends more money on ironic head-bands than beer. I can't respect someone like that.
Site blocked. Rats.
God-damn I hate hipsters. I wish they would get their own damn borough and stop sullying the name of mine with their putridity.
Last time I checked, most of the Americans who still called themselves "rebels" were the sort of people who prominently displayed the Stars and Bars. Not exactly the type of "rebel" he has in mind, then again, they are the type with most of the guns.
Last time I checked, most of the Americans who still called themselves "rebels" were the sort of people who prominently displayed the Stars and Bars.
I was born to rebel. Hey! Hey! Hey!
He has a well-worked-out, detailed world view. It doesn't match up with reality, but it's a beauty.
Hedges is a retard
