But They Did Confiscate His Water Bottle
Since TSA screeners miss most dummy guns and bombs in tests, it's surprising this sort of incident is not reported more often:
Officials say security screeners at a Bozeman-area airport failed to spot a gun in a passenger's luggage last month, but the man turned himself in when he realized his error.
Note the reaction from the airport board's chairman:
Gallatin Field Board Chairman Dick Roehm says he's disappointed at the lapse and the airport is looking into turning to a private company to handle security at the airport.
But the whole point of nationalizing airport security was to make us safer, wasn't it?
[Thanks to Tricky Vic for the tip.]

Wha??? They can do that?
Airports can subcontract out to private security. Only a few airports have actually done this though (San Francisco is the biggest). They're still heavily regulated and monitored by the TSA though, and they still have to follow all of the TSA's rules and regulations, so in the end it doesn't make too much difference.
If they can simply fire incompetence, that will be a huge difference and I'll feel safer.
No, the whole point of nationalizing airport security was to give the boobouise the sense it would make them safer, thus justifying feeding the bellies of the new tax consumers.
No. It was about increasing the power of people in DC. Making us safer was the lie they used to sell it.
Government employees do not make us safer.
TSA is nothing but a welfare program. No surprise the DemoRats are trying to unionize it.
Racist!
You're an idiot
but if its not nationalized how will all the lazy, incompetent people keep their jobs?
But Tom Daschle said "You don't professionalize until you federalize."
But the whole point of nationalizing airport security was to make us safer, wasn't it?
No it wasn't. It was to create more civil servants.
I think America's economy is in bad enough shape without the five-inch-long-fake-fingernail industry going bankrupt too, and the TSA agents at my local airport are the only things keeping that industry alive. So STOP INSULTING THE TSA. It's unpatriotic.
Jennifer judging women on their choice of "the five-inch-long-fake-fingernail" look is comparable to judging women who have worked in the phone sex industry.
No, the whole point of nationalizing airport security was to increase the rolls of Federal Union employees by tens of thousands overnight. Seriously.
By safer, they mean easier to control.
I just saw that story a little while ago, as I was eating breakfast. The best part of the story in the Bozeman Chronicle was the long quote from some union (AFL-CIO?) asshole about how horrible and dangerous it would be to entrust airport security to somebody with a profit motive
I like how the AFL-CIO thinks it doesn't have a profit motive. Or the government in general, for that matter.
The best way to eliminate this sort of slip-up is to identify the screener(s) who actually missed the weapon, and shoot him/them in the throat with it. I suspect diligence would noticeably improve.
the man turned himself in
The man is an asshole. I'm glad they stole his gun.
Harry Reid needn't apply:

Apologize for the threadjack. But Big Journalism is doing a Martha Coakley's greatest hits. Here is the first one. When she wasn't trying to keep innocent people in jail, Coakley was apparently trying to get out of prosecuting guilty ones.

I was under the impression the TSA was created to limit the liabilty to airlines of "poor security" type lawsuits. Mission accomplished.
That and stengthen the public sector and the public sector unions. Liberals are still pissed that they couldn't unionize them.
You know, I wonder why the Dems haven't taken their giant, dangling supermajorities and cleared the way for SEIU to take over TSA. What's stopping them?
I am shocked that he wasn't arrested or charged. Have heard other stories like this that didn't turn out so well for those who self-reported after realizing they'd accidentally brought something verboten through security.
Note the location: Bozeman, MT. Montanans don't get all bent out of shape over one little handgun. If TSA had made a stink about it the governor would probably have come down on them.
Why on earth would you self-report?
You're through security, you're not going to get caught (unless you drop the gat on the floor or something), and nobody checks you for nothing at the other end.
Keeping your mouth shut = no problems.
Running to nanny = no upside, big potential downside.
Wrong. I got screened 4 (four!) times on my recent flight. Apparently, they now search you at every freaking connection.
