Harry Reid Promises There Really is a Health-Care Bill at the End of the Rainbow
Remember at the beginning of the year when President Obama declared that we'd have health-care reform bills passed by the August recess? Not so much, right? Indeed, the whole sticking-to-the-timeline thing hasn't gone so well for Congress' would-be reformers. And now it looks like they're beginning to admit that they may not be able to get a bill passed this year.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is now saying that he's "not going to be bound by timelines," and Democratic sources are telling reporters that getting a bill finished this year is a "no-go."
Opposition strategy on health care has consisted of three parts—delay, delay, and delay—on the theory that the longer this drags on, the less likely it is to pass. I think that theory is basically sound: Pollster.com shows opposition to the health-care bill rising pretty steadily throughout the year. Indeed, this tactic—let's call it the Rolling Stones-strategy—recently pushed public opposition to the plan past the 50 percent mark, proving that for those trying to take down the once-inevitable health-care bill, time is most definitely on their side.

A couple big GOP wins last night is also going to scare some Dems who don't enjoy Nancy Pelosi's job security.
Nancy's polling like an outgoing pol.
I'll believe it when I see it. Although the comments on the SFGate website regarding universal healthcare are surprisingly one-sided against the Dems proposals.
Well, here's hoping it is truly a rainbow they're chasing! I somehow doubt it's illusionary, though. I think it's just a matter of time.
Neither side seems to be suggesting LESS government involvement - they're just quiblling over the details.
It isn't the opposition that is causing the delays, it is Democratic infighting that is causing it. Wrong again, Suderman.
And the opposition is (indirectly) causing the Democratic infighting.
The Dems in red/purple districts would generally be totally fine with the public option, but they're concerned about losing their seats in 2010 when the GOP accuses them (correctly) of being socialists. THAT'S what's causing the delay.
Opposition strategy on health care has consisted of three parts?delay, delay, and delay
And it's working marvelously. Remember how lefty ideologues fretted over Congress going on summer break before they had a bill? They wanted to rush through the legislation before Americans had a chance to protest it. Then came the angry fascist teabagging mobs (you know, your neighbors) and the left knew the game was over. They'd blown their big chance. That pesky old system of checks and balances actually worked. Ironically, so did the Dems' glorious democracy. They weren't counting on that.
Fuck that flashy picture.
They rescued that image from GeoCities before it went under.
So what's Michael Steele's take on this, Suderman?
James Ard,
I agree! And I said as much here: http://www.nypost.com/p/news/o.....LjjgLt6H/1
But I think a lot of the reason why Democratic infighting is an issue is because of effective opposition. And I'm not talking so much about GOP legislators -- I'm talking about outside groups that have been working hard (and spending significant amounts of money) behind the scenes to turn this into the mess it is.
Do you know what the "reply to this" button is for?
In fact can you offer one single example where the minority Republicans did anything that would cause a delay in the bill?
I'll buy that. And thanks for joining the boycott of the reply option.
If infighting over the public option is killing the Dems, imagine what our infighting over the reply button is doing to us libertarians.
Animation? At Hit & Run? You can do that and can't (1) get rid of threaded comments and (2) give us the blink tag?
For shame. For shame.
Actually, I don't buy it. outside groups aren't trying to delay the bill, they are trying to kill it. Is there any evidence that Palin, et al, have suggested dragging this thing out?
So, the only thing that stands between Harry Reid and universal coverage is him capturing a leprachaun?
Godspeed, you hearty drinking wee-folk!
O-ho, no! We have a deal, Abdul! If I can prove there's a leprechaun, you have to suck my balls, remember?
Does Martin O'Malley, the governor of Maryland, count? He's known as the Teflon Leprechaun.
I remember. I must have drank a quart of Paddy the night I took that stupid tea-baggers pledge.
Run fast, you little sods!
So, the only thing that stands between Harry Reid and universal coverage is him capturing a leprachaun?
Isn't that just like the Dems - always trying to steal from the Little People. 😉
+1
It's an animated GIF, ProL. It animates all on its own, no H&R special sauce required, though Steve Smith has graciously volunteered his special sauce.
And not only do threaded comments blow, but EVERY FUCKING TIME I post it loses my information AND redirects me to a blank page, both in Firefox and IE. Aren't "upgrades" great?
Poor baby.
I think most here will agree that I am no brainiac. That said, it is my fear and assumption that what we will al get out of congress is a health care reform bill that is a giant charlie-foxtrot. It will have enough compromises and riders to screw everybody over in a manner only the government can achieve.
Every time I hear some idiot whine about "do-nothing" Congress, I feel an almost insurmountable urge to choke him.
All hail the Foot-Draggers and Do-nothings!
Threaded comments should die from a spurting neck wound.
I am familiar with animated GIFs, Episiarch, having used them on occasion during my Webissimo days. I trying to utilize the lost art of sarcasm, but there's apparently a reason it's a lost art.
Don't smart me, ProL. See, I wanna watch you squirm; I wanna see you sweat a little, and when you smart me...it ruins it.
Sorry, the more appropriate quote was from Raising Arizona: "Why ain't you breast-feeding? You appear to be capable."
That's not a harmless animated GIF; that's a signal beacon from the Leprechau Liberation Front.
Don't eat the Lucky Charms!
insert "n" as needed.
Namimated? Neat? Then?
"Leprechau Liberation Front" - I though they were Romanians.
Tulpa,
"Do you know what the "reply to this" button is for?"
To continue the scourge of threaded comments?
"give us the blink tag?"
That isnt a gift.
No, it's a blessing.
As my mentor in my thankfully ended public policy career once noted:
"Legislation delayed is legislation denied."
You can use that next time around, Pete.
I will eventually fuck a server squirrel to oblivion while wearing a barbed wire cock sheath. They have crossed me too many times.

What, no props for the pot plant next to the pot-o-gold?
"Harry Reid Promises-"
Stop right there.
Also, why is that rabbit lifting its leg on the pot of gold?
While delay has certainly been one major tactic, the use of fear and uncertainty has also been an ongoing tactic that has rather effectively kept the Democrats on damage control. Comments comparing the health reform bill to terrorist threats promote nothing but fear.
I also think so that it will happen soon.... hope for the best...
Thanks for sharing it with us..
Hey its a nice post i like it....
