Even Investigative-Birther Influx Can't Stem Aloha State's Tourism Decline
It's shaping up to be a grim 50th birthday for America's youngest (and undoubtedly fakest) state, as the local tourism industry gets a nice Hawaiian punch courtesy of the global recession. According to the Wall Street Journal:
As much as a third of Hawaii's economy is driven by tourism, say state finance experts, and a recent state report showed that from January to June, spending from visitors who arrived by air dropped 15% to $4.97 billion from a year earlier.
Even sunbathers this year easily claimed spots on the normally overcrowded Waikiki Beach, a distressing sign for an economy more dependent on tourism than any other state in the U.S.
To put things into perspective, the state's unemployment rate, even at a 31-year high, is only 7.4 percent -- lower than the national average and better than the structural unemployment rate for many tourism-dependent economies around the world. (Oh wait: Damn you, Monaco, for screwing up the average.) The story also conflates government budget concerns with actual economic performance. (Gov. Linda Lingle is aiming to cut 1,000 state jobs to close an $800 million deficit.) Finally, there's this attempt by to pathologize the healthy dynamics of the bazaar:
Two years ago, there seemed no end to Hawaii tourism, said Marcus Oshiro, finance chairman of the Hawaii House of Representatives. "And now we're begging and offering free meals and free lessons trying to get them to come here."
Eager to do my part, I urge seekers of truth in all its forms to take a Hawaiian vacation and run down today's birth-certificate wrinkle, which holds that President Obama is actually 52 and thus was born before Hawaiian statehood. Leis, drinks with umbrellas, and a 1957 birth certificate: Make this year's vacation matter!
More broadly, doesn't tourism complicate the issue of Hawaiian independence? I mean, maybe the archipelago could get adopted by some other nearby country with 300 million of the richest people on Earth. But I'm not seeing many candidates on this side of the International Date Line. (Then again, at the rate we're going, you may soon need a passport to enter Hawaii anyway.)
Troubling questions, but the only question that matters is: What would McGarrett do? He'd tell us to hang loose:

As I said in a thread below, John McCain wasn't born in a US state either. So the birthers are pretty much left with a Ralph Nader administration if they want to push this issue.
WHOA WHOA WHOA
There's an ocean of difference between Manix and McGarrett. What gives?
When will the US stop publishing economic data too, eh?
Word got out that they were a sovereign nation-state and tourists didn't want to get a passport to go there.
...President Obama is actually 52 and thus was born before Hawaiian statehood.
Book him, Danno.
(It took five comments to get that catch phrase worked in? For shame.)
That is very curious. I'm sure it was just a birther hacking his website.
If you're trying to imply that Obama is Wo Fat, Tim, well, that's just plain racist.
Do any of you actually believe that Obama maintains his own myspace page? You'd have to be gullible as all hell--oh wait, birthers, right. Amazing how Republicans don't seem to recall Goldwater being born in Arizona territory before it was admitted as a state.

Time to get over it, guys. Next conspiracy, please.
Tim Cavanaugh doesn't have the intelligence nor the integrity to follow through, but:
1. Did CNN's president Jon Klein (and their "political researchers") get things wrong? That's an easy, yes-or-no question. Isn't what they said false?
2. If one wanted to discredit CNN in order to help one's cause (such as in order to force them to offer better coverage of one's cause), wouldn't pointing out the previous point be a great way to do it?
3. And, does anyone have to engage in any "birther theories" to point out that Klein got things wrong?
4. In fact, there are many other examples of the MSM getting the facts of this matter wrong, none of which involve "birther theories" but involve a simple matter of getting the facts straight.
Like I said, Tim Cavanaugh doesn't have the intelligence nor the integrity to understand the above or follow through on it, but maybe some of the visitors here will realize how powerful this issue could be if approached correctly.
It would help Obama greatly, if he could get his story straight, as to which hospital he was born at. First, it was Queens (according to both Barack AND his sister). Then, it was Kapi'olani. When he sent the latter a 'thank you' letter, they had it up briefly on their website, then removed it. Also, a title search showed that the Obamas did NOT live in the address mentioned in the birth anouncement (the one given as 'proof' by B.O.'s boosters). The Myspace thing is just the latest weird inconsistency.
Regarding the link jmtramel *at* gmail.com tried to post, that's actually from 10/31/08, and the link outrageously lies about what was in her statement.
If you're willing to be intellectually honest, compare what's at that link to what's in the AP's distortion that Tramel posted above.
Just because the AP lied doesn't make it true, even if hacks like Cavanaugh would never consider calling out the AP or CNN.
"for America's youngest (and undoubtedly fakest) state" . . . WTF?
Citizens of the state are going through lots of hardship - High cost of living, oversize gov't controlled by unions. These folks are working hard to make a living, but can't escape from under the domination of the democratic party.
The vast majority of Hawaii citizens don't even follow the "Independence" movement. It's been going on for decades led by fringe groups and some in the University faculty.
So, as my dad used to say, "think before you speak." You generalize and hurt the entire state with ignorant remarks. Great job, tough guy.
It's been going on for decades led by fringe groups and some in the University faculty.
*cough*Akaka*cough*Obama*cough*
Yeah, but on the other side, Japan could work. They like going to Hawaii.
Tim Cavanaugh used to work for Suck. For that reason, any time he writes something that seems stupid, it's generally best to assume that it's sarcasm that came across poorly because he offered no context.
The vast majority of Hawaii citizens don't even follow the "Independence" movement. It's been going on for decades led by fringe groups and some in the University faculty.
So the fuck what? It was an illegal, U.S. government-sponsored theft of property. The "vast majority" of Hawaii residents are living on stolen land. Further, an actual majority of Hawaiians at the time of over-throw spoke out in opposition to it, which made the Republic of Hawaii a complete sham. And of course, Hawaii was never dejure admitted to the union.
It's amazing that I'm not supposed to accept any mainstream media, but World Net Daily is legit. This is the same crap 9/11 Truth and anti-vaccination sites pull. Since they get a lot of crossover in their target audience, it shouldn't be surprising that there is an element of martyrdom involved in this halfway popular internet controversy.
*cough*Akaka*cough*Obama*cough*
Lonewacko you ignorant twit, there's a huge difference between supporters of the Akaka bill and the independence movement - in fact they're pretty much enemies. The independence movement has this large traveling bedsheet sign that accuses Kau Inoa (the movement in favor of the Akaka bill) of "selling out for a lousy t-shirt"
For example see Kamaka above. Kelly, Kamaka. Kamaka, Kelly. Y'all should get along famously.
Shut the fuck up, LoneWacko.
Let's say it was determined Obama was not born in the United States or one of it's territories or possessions such as the Panama Canal Zone. He was sworn in. Does that become void immediately and the second place in electoral votes win putting McCain in the White House? Does it put Biden in the White House? Does the Supreme Court or Congress get involved? Do members of the Electoral College recast their votes? Anyone know how this really works, or have really funny or scary alternatives that are probably more fun than the truth?
Either way, Hillary is gonna be pissed.
Why would the birther issue affect hawaiiiiiieeee tourism? Everyone (who's anyone) knows He was born at Coast Provincial General Hospital in Mombosa. Duh. Get with it man.
Doh! Now I look really dumb. He was born in Mombasa, not Mombosa. Don't want you nuts to start any conspiracy theories.
...President Obama is actually 52 and thus was born before Hawaiian statehood.
... in Seattle, where his 14 year-old mother was in high school.
Then, in 1961, they traveled to Kenya where he was born again, and his grandparents ran a fraudulent birth announcement in the newspaper to establish his bona fides as an American born-again, so he could run for President 48 years later.
BHO is the Antichrist, QED.
Before you all jump for the keyboard...let's look at this. Before he wasn't born in the US, but now IF he is 52 he was probably born in Hawaii? Come on.. it's like tweeking intelligent design to meet the new scientific facts... it will never end nor be correct.
If we all settle down I think you might see that the intern who typed this beauty probably couldn't do the math. 2009-1961= ? and Obama is a born US citizen. Get over it already.
On the topic of Hawaii tourism.. Do you know how much it costs to go there on vacation? It's not exactly the cheapest alternative. Seems to me the economy has all to do with it. I think I'll go there now since it will be a buyers market... aloha all!
Nick, it would be up to SCOTUS if such a thing came to pass. But if we're concerned about what the Constitution says, it hinges on the meaning of the word "eligible", which is what only natural born citizens are. Does that mean "eligible to be elected" or "eligible to hold office"?
If the former, it would seem that the entire election (including that of Biden) would be invalidated. I don't think they could install McCain/Palin because they didn't get a majority of the Electoral College; you couldn't put it up to a vote of the House because you need the two highest vote-getters for that process, and besides Obama and McCain, no one else got any electoral votes. My guess would be that the Speaker would become president, but who knows.
In the latter case, it's pretty clear Biden would become president as the President would be unable to execute the duties of his office.
