No Oxiclean Found In Billy Mays' System
Did cocaine kill stentorian pitchman Billy Mays? Did it contribute to his death? Was it merely a factor? Was the beloved loudmouth just another Atlantic City cokehead? And are we safe again from the deadly effects of falling suitcases? The seemingly circumspect report from the Hillsborough County, Florida medical examiner's office report provides fuel for a free-for-all over legal and illegal drug use:
From the presence of metabolites of cocaine and the absence of cocaine itself, it was concluded that Mr. Mays used cocaine in the few days prior to his death but not immediately prior to death.
"We were totally unaware of any non prescription drug usage and are actively considering an independent evaluation of the autopsy results," Mays' family says in a statement that blames the infomercial star's hypertension. But as this AP description indicates, you can make quite a chemical cocktail of yourself without breaking any laws:
The autopsy also found low concentrations of ethyl alcohol "consistent with social consumption of a few beverages" as well as the narcotic drugs hydrocodone, oxycodone and tramadol. Mays had prescriptions for the drugs -- which were found in therapeutic or subtherapeutic concentrations -- to ease hip pain.
In addition, the tests found evidence of two tranquilizers -- alprazolam (Xanax) and diazepam (Valium) -- which are commonly prescribed for a variety of ailments, including anxiety and insomnia. Both drugs were determined to be in therapeutic or subtherapeutic concentrations.
For the record, the coroner's report lists heart disease as the cause of death, relegating all of the above to possible contributors. Like Frank Sinatra, I'm for anything that gets you through the night (or through your irritable bowel syndrome), be it prayer, pills or a bottle of Jack Daniels. But I've never heard any of those things -- let alone a tongue-twisting combination of them -- described as being good for the long-term health of your circulatory system.
I'm going to go way out on a limb though, and predict that of all the drugs described above, the illegal one will be the only one you hear about repeatedly this weekend.

In another world, where drug law is unheard of, Billy Mays is alive and selling stimulants on TV like only he can.
I kid you not, so sooner than I had read that last line on media coverage, than the local news bumper spot says, "More info on the cocaine found in Billy Mayes system, tonight at ten"
Oh I dunno. All that stand up, sit down, stand up, now kneel, sit up, kneel, sit up we do at Mass isn't too bad for the cardiovascular system.
The greatest pitchman for KABLOW ever!
What? Billy Mays on coke? are you kiding me? But wait, it gets better!
I've been know on this site for say'n:
Keep DOPE ALIVE !!!
But the HEADlines don't mention a thing of the OTHER DRUGS found (accordding to CNN):
-Tramadol
-ViKs
-Xanax
-OxiCodone
...and traces of cocaine
Many many people in America are dying of the "Cumulative Effects of DRUGS"
In recent years, just to name a few:
-Michael Jackson
-Anna Nicole Smith
-Anna Nicole Smith's son
-Heath Ledger
-Ole Dirty Bastard
-Billy Mays
-Rick James
...and others
These are simply the people that make the NEWS. People must be dying of this EVERYWHERE.
I believe this to be the colateral consequences of the DRUG WAR.
People are being dragged to jail over a god-damn $5 bag of weed or a $20 bag of cocaine...yet they are encouraged to go to the Dr. and get LEGALIZED HEROIN prescriptions. That is what Tramadol, Oxicode, etc. ARE !!!
I think people were better off just smoking riffer and sniffing coke.
I know a lot of people died of Cociane/Heroin ODs...But David Crosby and Keith Richards are STILL ALIVE .
Lets' KEEP the GOOD-OLE DRUGS ALIVE...and Say no the CVS/Duane Reade.

Booze, hydrocodone, oxycodone, tramadol, xanax and valium? Sounds healthy to me.
Booze, hydrocodone, oxycodone, tramadol, xanax and valium? Sounds healthy to me.
BTW...they are ALL LEGAL...and Prescribed regularly.
It's called Seratonin Syndrome. Mixing painkillers and anti-depressants has a synergistic effect raising seratonin to dangerous levels. High seratonin causes the muscles to contract and either stops the heart or causes you to suffocate.
Hey Alice, are you arguing that people should be thrown in prison for using heroin, or using oxycodone or hydrocodone without a prescription? If you are, why don't you make your case on why the drug war is good for those drugs but not others. If not, why don't you let people live their own lives and shut the fuck up about what you "think" they should do.
IceTrey - I didn't see any anti-depressants listed.
Alcohol, benzodiazepams (valium, xanax), and opiates (oxycodone, hydrocodone) all slow down respiration. Combining any two of those is dangerous - they can also have the synergistic effect you were talking about, only combining to slow down respiration and heart rate.
The other drugs could cause heart failure, due to their heart-slowing effects. But of the drugs mentioned, only cocaine is causally linked to MI. Did they see dilated cardiomyopathy on the autopsy? That's a strong clue for long-term cocaine use. Of course, it could always be plain old atherosclerosis.
You know what? I'm totally cool if Billy Mays did a line of blow every once in a while. Good for him for living it up!
Billy Mays is basically Episiarch in approx. 20 years.
But wait! That's not all:
You get all this-- a street value of $1,500 for only $19.95. And, if you act now, we'll throw in a full ounce of Medical Marijuana absolutely free!
Operators standing by.

Millionaire ad-man?
Congrats on your future success Episiarch!
Are autopsies a matter of public record? The family obviously didn't want it released, so it seems wrong to me that it was. Obviously if he was alive it would fall under doctor-patient confidentiality, and I don't see why that should change just because he died.
Well, now you have: the Jack Daniels.
So did he have one Dr. Nick to write all those prescriptions, or was he doctor-shopping? Would a good doctor prescribe all those at the same time?
Chrispy,
Interesting question.
Wasn't he on a plane that morning? It wouldn't be uncommon to use xanax or valium if you get nervous on flights. And the painkillers are so common for chronic pain. I'm not completely convinced that he usually took them all at one time. As for the cocaine, I don't know what to say about that. Regardless, mixing all of them probably isn't a great idea.

How DARE you!!! I am Chuck Bass in a few years, goddamnit!
I had to wiki that name. So, you skipped out on military school because you didn't think the staff there would approve of "the wet look" (or a tasteful amount of makeup).
From what I read on CNN, Mays suffered from hypertension and atherosclerosis. That's what killed him.
Cocaine is bad for the heart of even a healthy person because it can cause spasms of the coronary arteries. So can meth (and I think even too many cigs or a lot of coffee), but one thing I keep getting told is that I'm gonna see a couple otherwise healthy people in the ER with cocaine-induced infarcts.
I do think people should be able to do all the blow they want, of course, but it's really the last drug that someone with known CAD (especially stenosis of the left anterior descending coronary artery) should be doing.
OMGosh so the guy would take an occasional hit to take the edge off, no biggie!

Look at anonymity guy. Anything to justify his own addiction.
Wow, that cocaine stuff sounds really dangerous. If only it were illegal, nobody would use it and we would have no more of these senseless deaths.
Art-P.O.G., earning a living is an addiction?
Not that there's anything right with that...
IIRC, cocaine metabolites are far from a definitive signature for cocaine especially in small quantities. According to the infallible Wikipedia, the major metabolite of cocaine, Bezolecgonine, is used as the primary ingredient in medication for muscle pain. It's possible Mays was using this or other OTC drugs that created a cocaine signature.
If he was using cocaine with a heart condition he was an idiot even if it did not contribute directly to his death. Cocaine is like skateboarding. It should be left to the young.

Or maybe, just possibly, Billy Mays had a bad heart and kicked the goddam bucket early as a result. See Pistol Pete, my mother and my late wife for examples of people getting dealt a shitty hand in the cardiopoker game.
Allow me to also go out on a very stout limb and venture a guess that people have died of heart attacks in their 40s long before hydrocodone, oxycodone, tramadol alprazolam, and diazepam were concocted, alcohol was distilled or cocaine had been refined.
Kevin, enough of your heresy. The War on Drugs is all that stands between us and the complete collapse of Western Civilization.
I was referring to the opium addiction he copped to, but I like your reading, too. 😀
Crispy et al.:
In Florida, autopsy reports are generally public records, although I believe some exceptions can be made. Recall the dust-up over the Dale Earnhart (who died in daytona Beach) autopsy records a while back.
I just have to say, though it's not quite HopeZombie creepy, the disembodied giant floating head of Billy Mays is...disquieting.
someone--
I'm not aware that cocaine use can cause an MI days after using. I always thought it was due to the immediate effects of the drug. If you know of some evidence that coke can cause heart attacks days later, please share.
Is there an exception for autoerotic asphyxiation? Inquiring minds want to know. 😉
Thar be Grecian 5 in that thar beard.

...and the mall cops are going to kick your ass if they find you doing it on the sidewalk in front of JC Penney.

This point has already been raised, but I would like to see somebody grill the medical examiner about the probability of a false positive on this "cocaine metabolite" result.
Maybe that person could then post the interview on some popular web video clearinghouse.
Not that I care one way or another whether he actually was using it; I just would like to see somebody at least make an attempt to put a stick in the spokes of the "OMFG COCAINE KILT THET GAI!!!" crowd.
In case anyone's accidentally stumbled on this thread, I want to make perfectly clear that libertarianism is about a lot more than free drugs. A lot of people are under the false impression that libertarians are just wastoids who want free drugs, but that's wrong in some way. I don't know exactly in which way it's wrong, but I'm sure it is. Or at least I think so.
Meanwhile, one of America's best reporters is using a Mays-like spiel from BHO to try to show how SP is wrong: link. I'm going to guess that the reporter isn't telling us something, and it's sad that the other side doesn't have the intellectual capacity to show how she's wrong (assuming she is). Instead, they just want their free drugs or to go to public meetings and act like baboons.

Did you just concede our points and demonstrate the cowardly, childish, anti-intellectual nature of nativists? I think you did.
In case anyone's stumbled onto this thread, I want to make perfectly clear that 24AheadDotCom above is not me. But that would-be spoofer is right about libertarianism being about more than free drugs. It also includes a healthy recognition of which ethnic grouping historically came up with the idea of freedom and democracy, and which ones have traditionally eschewed these in favor of autocracy. And from this recognition we see the pitfalls of the well-intentioned (and not so well-intentioned) open borders philosophy that the denizens of Reason proffer.
shut the fuck up Chris Kelly
Even LoneWacko spoofers are nativist fucktards. Huh.

I've not partaken in the latest pharmaceutical fads like Ecstacy but my extensive trials of what was available in the '70s and '80s leads to the conclusion that cocaine is just not a good use of your drug dollar.
@ Alice Bowie
Tramadol HCL is an unscheduled, centrally acting opioid agonist. It's is condsidered to have habit/abuse risk, but is considered non-addictive. It is the primary NN analgesic indicated addicts in remission.
Physician's Desk Ref. 2008. 62 ed. 3326-28.
Referring to Vicodin as "Vikks" suggests you are no stranger to the medication.
@ IceTrey
tramdadol HCL is only drug listed that has SSRI pharmacokinetic effect (part of it's analgesic properties). No other SSRI/SSNRI were listed; Ser Syn is very unlikely.
@ Shannon Love
Wiki, as per cited PDR, is correct.
In addition to it's topical formulation, cocaine HCL is indicated and (rarely) administered for nasal/frontal sinus operative procedures. It's short half-life (30-40 min) topically for vasocontriction/hemostasis without the risk of ischemia/necrosis from vasocontrictors like epinephrine, which has a long half life. I am not aware of any OTC's causing a false positive for bezolecgonine.
@ someone, Nooge and Sparticus.
You are all correct; COD would be MI sec. to Cardiomyopathy with HTN NOS. The opioids and benzodiapines promote bradycardia, bradypnea, and hypotension, particularly if taking an anithypertensive. Alcohol would have increased synergistic effect. Benzos are also indicated for seizures (anti-convulsant). All would have slowed pharmacodynamics of cocaine, thus exacerbating the underlying cardiac condition due to vasoconsriction of the cardiac ateries with delayed left ventricular output.
In short, because cocaine is a stimulant, his bad ticker was trying to pump blood that wasn't there. Iscehmia and infarct ensued.
From NIDA Research Monograph, Number 73. p 84. http://www.nida.nih.gov/pdf/monographs/download73.html
"Benzoylecgonine can generally be detected in urine up to 2 days after cocaine use. A positive cocaine metabolite assay therefore indicates use within thii(sic) period. Depending on the frequency of urine testing, a negative assay may not be a clear indication of lack of chronic use. With this and other drugs
that clear the body relatively rapidly, short detection times in urinalysis procedures mean that individuals using such drugs will be less likely to be detected than those using drugs like marijuana or PCP, which have longer
detection times."

@ Spartacus
Sudden mortem from cocaine use is unusual, but certainly not impossible. Depending on purity (what the coke was "cut" with) and route chosen, COD associated sudden ventricular fibrillation.

"Would a good doctor prescribe all those at the same time?"
Yes, all those medications can be prescribed co-commitantly, albeit with careful monitoring. I do not know the exact doses Mays was prescribed or if he followed his ordered regimen, but his presciption is within ethical medical guidelines.

Cocaine is the dullest drug I have ever done recreationally.
Out of curiosity, what's the best one you've ever done?
my extensive trials of what was available in the '70s and '80s leads to the conclusion that cocaine is just not a good use of your drug dollar.
I can only imagine how true that was back then. Even now, with coke prices far below what I hear they were back in the day, it is still not the best use of your drug dollars. However, I wouldn't go as far as NM and call it "dull" by any means. Anyway, a much cheaper and safer alternative is to get some Ritalin and crush it. High is almost identical to coke and if you're lucky enough to have a prescription you can get about the same high as $300 of coke for a $10 co-pay. Even if you have to buy it at street prices it's still a lot cheaper than coke and you know it's pure. Plus none of that numb throat which can get in the way of your drinking.
But from my perspective a better stimulant alternative is just plain old dextroamphetamine taken orally. Pure, no need to crush or snort and the high lasts a lot longer (though it is admittedly less intense) which is much more convenient for a night out drinking. Not easy to keep taking coke breaks all night. Though I'd say snorting a line at the bar is now slightly less frowned on than lighting up a cigarette.
Cocaine is the dullest drug I have ever done recreationally.
Neu, this is one of the few times that I agree with you 100%. And we're both in the same US state!

Wait, then what's Gillespie?
I was more or less addicted to coke for two separate semesters. I'd do it in the back of class or leave class in the middle to do lines int he unisex bathroom. It was a solitary room and had a convenient metal trey to crush it up on.
Grams were 70 bucks from St. Reuben. It was good shit, not un-adulterated but very high quality.
I don't think coke is underrated. It's not worth it and it's harmful as fuck, I admit. Not being able to go to sleep because you're still up and your nose has started to bleed sucks.
I quit without any problems and I don't regret any of it.
(Alcohol and hallucinogens are where it's at).
