The Log Cabin Republicans get Feisty in California
The Orange County Register reports that California Log Cabin Republicans are fighting the passage of Proposition 8:
The Log Cabin Republicans, the nation's largest gay GOP group, opposed Prop. 8 and is supporting lawsuits to have it overturned, according to Frank Ricchiazzi.
The Laguna Beach resident, who helped found the the Log Cabin club in the late 1970s, has a interesting take on Prop. 8 and the lawsuit - particularly since he thought it was a little early for gay marriage when the state Supreme Court gave it the green light in May.
"It was like a steak on the grill - it was still a little bit raw and needed more time," he said of gay marriage. But a younger generation disagreed with him. "Others were ready to put it on the plate."…
"The dams have been opened, the water has passed through," said Ricchiazzi. "And now they want to bring it back? … How can you tell 1,000s of people who have gotten married that you're going to take it back?"
I believe it was a Hit & Run commenter who said that Log Cabin Republicans are the wallflowers at every party; maybe this sort of activism will get them invited onto the dance floor.
reason on Prop 8 here and here. Radley Balko on the demographics of pro-Prop 8 voters here.

Good for them.
Pro-Prop 8 voters are gay.
The one time I ran for office as a Libertarian, one of my opponents was a Log Cabin Republican. His heart was in the right place, but talk about choosing a thick steak to grill (to further exhaust Ricchiazzi's simile).

Like a tube steak even. Smothered in underwear. Right?
Maple syrup is to sticky to use as a sexual enhancement, at least every day.

With a Gorgonzola drizzle.
I've said this before. I do not understand why the Log Cabin Pepublicans don't just quiot the GOP and join the Libertarian party en masse.
I'd welcome them, surely they would be a marked improvement over troofers and other tinfoil clad folks.
Perhaps it's the same sort of reason why various other GOP libertarian-types are still Republicans.
Sorry J sub D but LoneWacko is to great of a Libertarian to let these Log Cabins into the party.

I'd guess it's the partly the "wasted vote" reason and partly social issues like fear of drug legalization.

Personally, I dont' care about this one way or the other, it takes no bread from my table to have gay marriage, or not.
When the gays discover that there are others out there who are really denied employment (the ability to make money to pay bills and buy food) and student loans, etc. because or a non-violent drug offense or a positive urine test, then I will be on board with their cause. Being gay does not bar you from getting a job.
/I look at drug use as a religious issue.
//Religion is protected in the workplace and it is a choice.
///I can be a Christian one day and then decide to be buddhist the next, no test for that.
////My body my choice....whatever.

Let me make the pitch. Gays are not noted for abstinence from illegal drugs. I believe (TLTG) that cops often target gays for enforcement of drug laws.
Howe much influence do they have in a party dominated bt fundie Christians? The top three GOP candidates for president - McCain (the best of the lot when it comes to treating queers like they're real people, yet he still opposes gay marriage , civil unions and gays in the military), Huckabee (an ignorant hillbilly whackjob preacher who'd likely approve of re-criminalizing sodomy), and Mitt Romney (LDS, need I say more?).
The Log Cabin Republicans could double the size of sane membership in the LP.

Did it work?
I've stated this before - to be dressed down by Your Favorite Queer - but I don't get why gays would join the Republican party. For the same reason why I couldn't see a black person joining the Democratic party circa 1880. When part of the platform states a person is underserving of rights others take for granted, I just don't get why they would submit themselves to the indignity.
J Sub D, not only do Romney's religious views make him more likely to legislate by them, but he's also the worst kind of flip-flopper, changing his mind about abortion and gay marriage once he thought he could be president instead of just governor of Massachusetts. What a principled guy.
Funny how it's only after LCR has no Republican presidential candidate to grovel to that they suddenly decide that it's in their best (media-whoring) interests to "come out" (ahem) against bigot amendments. Go figure.
A new Proposition in California will restrict the vote to only the majority, no minoritys get to vote!
Because, like the GOP, they are a diverse bunch, with libertarians, neocons, socons (sure :-), old righters, business shills, power addicts etc. all contributing to the mix.
