Predictions '08
At this point Joe Biden has a better shot than John McCain of becoming the next president of the United States, so I'll skip the race for first place and offer some educated guesses about how the more interesting candidates might fare:
Third Place: Ralph Nader's name recognition surpasses Bob Barr's, and he's currently outpolling the LP's man by about 2 percentage points. And no one ever went broke underestimating the electoral performance of the Libertarian Party. Nonetheless, if Barr draws mostly from the right and Nader draws mostly from the left -- which seems like a reasonable outcome to expect, though there are surveys showing Nader making inroads among right-wing populists -- then the Libertarian could come out on top. This time around, there are simply more disaffected conservatives than disaffected liberals out there.
Fifth Place: Chuck Baldwin should top Cynthia McKinney easily. You might at least expect her to do well in Georgia, the state that used to send her to Congress, but the Greens aren't on the ballot there.
Seventh Place: A month ago this would have been an easy call for Alan Keyes. But with Ron Paul's non-campaign polling 4 percent in Montana, he has a shot at it. If McKinney flops badly, he might even make it to sixth.
Last Place: Write-ins aside, I'm expecting Gene Amondson of the Prohibition Party to bring up the rear, despite his catchy campaign slogan: "Vote tradition, vote prohibition!"

I think Ron Paul should do better than 4% and with massive write-ins accross the country could do exceptionally well.
Go Ron Paul
A real Patriot who actually understands economics
hay Lt Dru - is ^^^ that twaddlenock just precious. d00d (above). go back to Ekon 79 with that weak-ass shit!
In 2006 my wife made a cake with "F U Santorum" written in the icing for election night. [Yeah, I know, we're class acts. But it was fun to celebrate Rick's demise.]
This year she's making cupcakes instead, with the names of states written in icing, and when something we want to see happen in a given state [Chambliss going down in flames, Dole getting smoked, Franken NOT pulling it out, Paul causing McCain to lose in MT] we will celebrate with that cupcake.
It feels like I'm going to eat a lot of cupcakes.
You and your wife must be loads of fun to hang out with.
mmm cupcakes...
For whatever reason, KY doesnt allow write-ins for the presidential race.
Im guessing it is because you are actually electing a slate of electors.
Back during Perot's first run, I was convinced that ol' Ross would do way better on election day than the polls were indicating. Well, election day came and went, and Perot's performance was pretty much exactly what the polls said all along.
I figure the same will be true of Ron Paul's performance this year.
I'm not sure McCain can be written off so easily. The problem is that we can't trust the media to report with integrity, so there's no telling what's really going on with voters.
I remember when the same thing was being said about a Kerry victory on election day. Who knows?
will they actually report write in candidate totals tonight? I would think it could takes days or weeks to count them, since you have to go through each ballot individually.
Prediction: The reaction of conservative pundits once the reality of their loss sets in will be entertaining.
KJL at The Corner has already offered this wonderful false dichotomy for voters out there
Since this is the prediction thread, I am predicting 385 electoral votes for Obama.
338 EVs for Obama.
53.2%-46.0%.
58 Democratic Senate seats.
George,
Do real patriots write racist newsletters?
Since this is the prediction thread, I am predicting 385 electoral votes for Obama.
This is a biased prediction because you just want to eat cake.
Prediction:
302 Electoral Votes for Obama
[non-partisan, dispassionate, Keith Oberman voice]
Early exit polling by this reporter indicates that Senator Obama is getting 100% of the vote. 100% of the KKK members in Philly have indicated they voted Obama. 100% of union members indicated Obama. 100% of worshipers at the All Dulles Area Muslim Society, Adams Center (ADAMS)in Herndon, VA voted Obama.
Based on this reporter's sample, if John McBush gets a single vote in this election it will be due to blatant and obvious fraud!
We do have reports of Vice Presidential operatives, under the guise of "Army Reservists", having been dispatched across the country. We all know what that is about.
[/non-partisan, dispassionate, Keith Oberman voice]
I predict an Obama win, with free gas and mortgages for all. Evan Thomas said the MSM "glow" was worth 15 points in 2004, and this time their coverage was like unto the sun itself.
Meanwhile, the FBI is investigating the Obama-Rezko deal, and it looks very very bad:
"Agents and I talked about payoff, bribe, kickback for a long time, though it took them only a short number of minutes of talking with me while looking at the appraisal to acknowledge what they already seemed to know: The Rezko lot was grossly overvalued," Mr. Conner told The Washington Times Monday.
"Rezko paid the asking price on the same day Obama paid $300,000 less than the asking price to the same seller for his adjacent mansion," he said. "This begs the question of payoff, bribe, kickback."
In a wrongful-termination complaint filed last month in the Circuit Court of Cook County, Mr. Conner said his appraisal of the Rezko property, held in Rita Malki Rezko's name, was replaced with a higher one and he was fired when he questioned the document.
Can a Presdident serve his term from prison, or does that only happen in Douglas Adams books?
when something we want to see happen in a given state [Chambliss going down in flames, Dole getting smoked, Franken NOT pulling it out, Paul causing McCain to lose in MT] we will celebrate with that cupcake
Please tell me there are...other things...in those cupcakes. Or that you will be swilling booze at the same time.
Since I don't eat cupcakes, I will just be swilling booze.
We do have reports of Vice Presidential operatives, under the guise of "Army Reservists",
I heard many people in the Armed Forces even had the nerve to try to vote! Fortunately, responsible and vigilant Dem election officials courageously threw their ballots away.
Prediction:
We will keep troops stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan at least until 2012.
We will continue to run up record deficits for the next four years.
The next SCOTUS appointee will be obsequious to the state and care little about the Constitution.
The War On Drugs will continue at its current level if not increase.
But who's going to win the presidential election? Damned if I know, but it'll be the puppet on the left or the puppet on the right.
I'll be chewing bubble gum and kicking ass. And I'm all out of bubble gum.
I copied and pasted that all by myself!
My prediction is pain.
Hey, TallDave, how's about you lay off the "black people committing crimes" shtick for a couple more weeks?
You've still got the stink of pimping the backwards B story on you, and I don't think it's going to come off for a long time.
Prediction:
There will be a flame war between TallDave and joe no matter what happens tonight.
As for the election I'm gonna go with what Larry Sabato said since he got it right the last time and in 2000:
http://www.centerforpolitics.org/crystalball/article.php?id=LJS2008110301
I'll be chewing bubble gum and kicking ass. And I'm all out of bubble gum.
Warty, either put the glasses on, or start eating that trashcan.
Oh, and I voted for Barr, even though I threatened to vote for McCain after Hopey O'Change's minions canvassed me three freaking times during the past week.
Also voted for a bunch of Greens because they were the only opponents the Democrats had in all the local races. Had to wash my hands afterward, though.
Prediction: in every presidential election from now on, the paranoid supporters of the losing candidate will complain that the election is being stolen by the other party's corrupt election officials.
The market gives Barr a slightly better chance than Nader of clearing 1% of the vote (28% vs 20%). See Intrade.
I think the bigger question is whether either will clear .5%.
I voted for Barr, voted for Warner, wrote-in my dog for Congress, and voted against the incumbent in all the local races.
There will be a flame war between TallDave and joe no matter what happens tonight.
For the last time, though. Right? I can't imagine what the partisans will find to argue about after tonight's celebration of the illusion of popular control of govt is finished.
"For the last time, though. Right? I can't imagine what the partisans will find to argue about after tonight's celebration of the illusion of popular control of govt is finished."
TallDave will find out via Hot Air that one of Obama's cabinet nominees knew a Palestinian in college or something, copy it from The Corner and paste it on a thread here, and that will be the next thing they argue over.
"Prediction:

I voted Barr, then proceeded to vote against every incumbent to congress I could. Had to write in my own name once because the person running did not have anyone running against them.
[non-partisan, dispassionate, Keith Oberman voice]
New exit polling indicates that the only people getting votes besides Senator Obama are McKinney and Nader.
Nobody has voted for McCain and Bush anyplace in the country. We predict Obama will get every EV available from all 57 states, bringing his total above 500.
Any change from this outcome will obviously be due to Republican election stealing.

I really fucking hate that. Gerrymandering needs to die. They should have computers do the redistricting somehow in a completely random fashion.
Prediction:
If the market goes down, Larry Kudlow will blame the election of Obama.
Wow, I am guessing by the early NH votes that Oabama is going to clean house. I sure hope so. God help us all if that idiot McBush wins.

BDB,
Rectangular District Amendment. I'm working on that one immediately after we pass the amendment that makes all federal laws null and void five years after passage.
Will no one rid me of this meddlesome anonymity guy?!?
Any change from this outcome will obviously be due to Republican election stealing.
Hey, you forgot racism!
I should clarify, the RDA would require that House districts have at most two north-south boundaries and two east-west boundaries, with the only other permissible boundaries being state lines. This would make gerrymandering more than a couple of districts in each state next to impossible.
Barr and Nader do about the same; McCain wins by a small margin; joe gets almost as upset as he was during last season's Super Bowl.
Early voting was bad down here, so I voted this morning. Babar got his vote, which makes it four times in a row that I've opted for the LP presidential candidate.
I did the same as Kaiser--voted Barr for President (we have about a dozen names on the Pres ballot in Floriduh), and voted anti-incumbent on the rest of the ballot. I even voted not to retain the judges that were up (and I will continue to do so until we find some that will not sign no-knock warrants).
I am wearing all black today in mourning. I wish I could drink heavily but I am at work until after 9:30 tonight.
Cunnivore--
Sadly the only way you could pass that would be the convention method of amending the Constitution. The Congresscritters would never let that one past them.
Oddly, this hasn't made much news either:
Florida Congressional candidate Eddie Adams Jr. (R) was admitted to Tampa General Hospital Sunday suffering from severe burns on the hands and arms. He will be undergoing additional skin grafts Tuesday.
A vandal tied a mattress to the underside of Mr. Adams pick-up truck. Friction with the road, and contact with the catalytic converter combined to ignite the bedding.

Early reporting precincts across the country are 100% Obama according to our inside sources in Manhattan and San Francisco!!!!

That's more like it. Needs more cannibalism though.
Also, we need some heartwarming stories of people so enthusiastic about Obama they are voting from beyond the grave.
I suck try that again
McCain wins by a small margin; joe gets almost as upset as he was during last season's Super Bowl
I think a McCain presidency might be worth that.
And Head, you fucked up your hyperlink tags something fierce.
The biggest surprise for me in this election cycle is that the Populist Party doesn't have its own Presidential candidate. For me that meant support for Jay.
This was my favorite story so far:
Last week Mike Sandvick, head of the Milwaukee Police Department's five-man Special Investigative Unit, was told by superiors not to send anyone to polling places on Election Day. He was also told his unit -- which wrote the book on how fraud could subvert the vote in his hometown -- would be disbanded.
As a former Milwaukee I am shocked and appalled nodding in resignation.

TallDave,
That's his own fault for not checking under the vehicle before starting it. What if there were a small child hiding under the truck instead of a mattress?
cunnivore,
Or a Polar Bear! SUVs are killing the Polar Bears.
Cunnivore--
What do you think of the amendment that would make Congress read all the bills it passes out loud in the chamber?
That would be a good amendment too. They might still be reading the Patriot Act if that amendment was in force!
It would definitely result in more job opportunities for speed talkers in DC, though.
I love the sound of whining on election day morning.
I remember once, we had 2 solid months of voter-fraud accusations.
When we walked up afterwards, we didn't find a single fraudulent vote.
But that smell. That desperation smell. It smells like...victory.
Is it wrong that that mattress story makes me think of the scene in Naked Gun 2-1/2 where OJ Simpson is trying to attach a homing device underneath a suspect's car when it takes off?
"It would definitely result in more job opportunities for speed talkers in DC, though."
Ha, I think they'd hire an auctioneer to be House Clerk at that point!
That'd make C-SPAN more entertaining.
joe, I had no idea you supported Bush in 2000.
My state rep (age: 73) has an opponent for the first time in forever. I was going to vote for the other guy on general principle (plus he is a 30 year old computer science dude, so I figured what the heck). However, he mentioned his AFL-CIO endorsement on his website and lost my vote.
Do real patriots write racist newsletters?
Didn't the real patriots put slavery in the constitution?
It wasn't "slaves". It was "other persons". 😛
cunnivore, I have no idea what you're talking about.
Seriously, was there supposed to be some connection here? I don't recall reading a single word about voter fraud before the 2000 election.
Then again, it was a close race, and nobody was trying to pre-spin an expected wipeout.
There was pre-spin about Diebold from Dems in 2004 IIRC.
But it started like a week before the election. Not two months.
Anyway the Republicans won't blame fraud. They'll blame TheMedia.
Didn't the real patriots put slavery in the constitution?
What Constitution are you looking at? The first mention of slavery in the Constitution is its abolishment in Amendment XIII.
joe, apparently voter fraud is no problem if it a) is for your guy or b) on a scale small enough not to decide the outcome.
curious that your intellectual fraud is so similar.
You want a prediction? The government will become larger and more evil.
And don't forget that Ron Paul is on the ballot in Louisiana, too, and if rumors are to be believed, he should have won the Louisiana primary.
I don't have much to vote on other than prez, a couple of judges and 2 referendums. I do have a libertarian running for a house seat against one of the pieces of shit that voted for the bailout. He'll get one of his 3 total votes from me.
I just wish I could pronounce his name.
My prediction? I won't really give a shit about who wins, as very little will change, other than the drapes at 1600 Penn.
"Anyway the Republicans won't blame fraud. They'll blame TheMedia."
Psh they are already blaming fraud, and of course the media. They are smarter than the Dems though, they are getting their fraud stories out BEFORE they lose rather than after. They have been going after ACORN for almost a month now.
Kaiser,
You mean ACORN is not engaged in any fraud at all?
"The government will become larger and more evil."
but you repeat yourself.
Nigel Watt,
Yes, we all lose, no matter who wins. However, it's important to remember that we're the ones who've voted ourselves into this corner.
Here's a question: If McCain does win, how will the Obama faithful take the defeat? The parties--particularly the Democrats--sound more and more like bad sports fans who blame every loss on the referee, so I'm not hopeful for a calm acceptance of the situation.
Pro Libertate,
Speak for yourself. I wasn't eligible to vote until May 2007, and I don't appreciate the burden the previous generations have put on me to pay off all their debt.
"Here's a question: If McCain does win, how will the Obama faithful take the defeat? The parties--particularly the Democrats--sound more and more like bad sports fans who blame every loss on the referee, so I'm not hopeful for a calm acceptance of the situation."
That's easy. Racism. The so-called "Bradley Effect" and all that jazz.
If McCain does win, how will the Obama faithful take the defeat?
So very, very badly. I am almost salivating at the thought of it, even though it seems unlikely. Oh, what fun that would be.
By burning the inner cities. No chance for that though.
I predict this guy will finish last: http://news.medill.northwestern.edu/chicago/news.aspx?id=99997
If McCain does win, how will the Obama faithful take the defeat?
With the typical grace and dignity that is the standard of the Ultraleft. domoarrigato pegged it.
If McCain does win, how will the Obama faithful take the defeat?
Does "can't we all just get along" jog your memories?
If McCain does win, how will the Obama faithful take the defeat?
Every city in America would look like Detroit after the Lions win the Super Bowl.
More likely, you'll have Democrats and cops eliminating each other across the country.
...God that'd be awesome.

Kaiser,
You mean ACORN is not engaged in any fraud at all?
As an organization? Not at all. Some people ACORN hired to collect registrations defrauded ACORN itself by filling out fake ones instead of actually doing their job, but ACORN was required by law to turn said registrations in, even if they suspected or knew they were fake.
As an organization? Not at all. Some people...
huh? isn't this coming from the same people that insist CEO's take the fall for failings at their firms? As a leader of any organization, you live and die by what your subordinates do. If you didn't know, you should've known and you are responsible for taking steps to correct and publicise your errors. ACORN issues nothing but excuses. Sure they are small fry - and the fraud is probably meaningless - so just own up it and move on already.
I wonder if the excitement over the election isn't a bit overstated. Conversation overheard at work:
"So, did you vote?"
"Oh, right, there's an election today. Who's running again?"
"McCain and Obama."
"Two Irish guys, huh? Oh well, I don't care."
jeez - where do you work?!

The thing is, basically any organization that registers people to vote has similiar issues, because the law in most states is such that once a registration is filled out, it can't be thrown away. ACORN knew some of their registrations were bad, and frequently flagged such before they turned them in, and then the registrar of voters examines them, and, if they are false, rejects them. This is exactly how the system is supposed to work; ACORN obeyed the law here.
The Republicans I know are already pre-complaining and re-hashing arguments from 2004 (City v. Suburbs, "Kerry was ahead in the polls too!", liberal-media-bias). None of them seem to understand that this is going to be different this year. I expect shock throughout the right-wing blogs. They don't realize that McCain doesn't stand for small government, its total red-team reflexive rhetoric against the blues. I expect mud on many faces in the coming years.
domoarrigato:
I actually just had two people who work in my building express to me that they were shocked that there was more then two choices for president.
Nephilium
I'm not pulling for a Republican win, and I don't think media bias will have much effect -- it's already been discounted.
However, I do think it's premature to give Obama the win. I can understand the anti-Republican sentiment, but I don't understand the pro-Democrat sentiment. I have yet to hear a reasoned argument why a Democrat controlled government would be good for the nation.
It's mystifying.
"I have yet to hear a reasoned argument why a Democrat controlled government would be good for the nation." - Mike Farmer @ 11:38am
Mike, if you live in DC, where Reason is headquartered, being pro-Democrat means you get invited to all the kick-ass parties!
Neph, I guess I shouldn't be so surprised. I had similar conversation: friend (non-citizen) asked me if the high turnout was bad for "my guy" I said it was indifferent since it would be a miracle if my guy broke 2%. He was confused because he was sure Ron Paul had dropped out. Conversation ended with me sending him this link and him scratching his head.
That's the problem. Computers ARE doing it now, which is why the gerrymandering is worse than ever. What they should do is just follow county borders or something.
I wish there was some sort of partisan filter for this post. Some of it's really freakin' annoying, and unfunny besides.
"I actually just had two people who work in my building express to me that they were shocked that there was more then two choices for president.
Nephilium"
My mother still doesn't understand the concept. She doesn't want Obama because he'll let abortion continue. Of course, McCain won't stop it anytime soon either, but he's at least against it in principle. Maybe I should at least inform her that there was a GOP candidate that was for abolishing Roe v. Wade and leaving the decision up to the states, but she probably wouldn't understand. It's either the baby killer, or the republican candidate, so her choice is obviously republican.
*shakes head*...
I wish there was some sort of partisan filter for this post
Simple, dude. Ignore any posts by joe, TallDave, or Montag.
Of course, any time I mention trying to think a little more critically, either bluntly or pragmatically, she shuts down and gets completely pissed off. It's useless.
Danny,
INTJ trying to convince people of something they know to be true = often futile. This is a hangover from yesterday's thread on this - but it was so insightful, I dare to crosspost.

Also are there any other Firefox users having trouble on this page lately??

ROFLMAO!!! Yea, let's get HAL or Colossis to do it since they don't listen to human beings.
Meanwhile, back in reality . . .
Hai, Montag.
They should have computers do the redistricting somehow in a completely random fashion.
Readin' comprehenshun, u r doin' it rong!
The great state of South Carolina doesn't allow write-in's for president, and the electronic voting booth in my polling site doesn't let you skip president (any other one you can skip, but not prez) so I'm going to vote Barr. Every other contest I'm writing in a family member.
BDB,
"completely random fashion." Even better! Let's get those voting districts scattered all across the State with one block represented by 8 different reps.
Guy, you're a total moron. If you are so dense you can't figure out what I'm getting at, please kindly piss off.
LOL, such bright and insightful responses.
Oh, sorry for using rhywun's truncated quote of yours, although you did not bother having a fit about that.
Yes, continue to entertain us with your higher level thinking.
Good thing the community organizers of the Black Panthers are protecting the polling locations in Philadelphia. Nice to see somebody is taking action to protect the process.
Don't forget, some of us here in Connecticut may be voting for Nader because Bob Barr isn't even an option as a write-in candidate.
Nader was on the ballot and the only available write-in options here in CT were Chuck Baldwin, Cynthia McKinney, and a couple of literal socialists.
Interesting that the media completely phased out Nader this year in order to make way for Obama.
"Interesting that the media completely phased out Nader this year in order to make way for Obama."
It's only interesting if you were unconscious through the entire 2004 campaign and you're desperate to feed your TallDave-ian delusions about the media. Nader's been irrelevant since his 2000 campaign.
ACORN obeyed the law here.
As a matter of fact, they went beyond the requirements of the law, flagging suspicious registration forms for the clerks.
But when you're more interesting in whining than facts, that's the sort of thing you tend to overlook.
Oh, hi, Guy. How's your day going?
