People at Slate Like Obama. A Lot.
The good people at Slate have revealed their votes to the world, as reason staffers will do tomorrow. The totals:
Barack Obama: 55
John McCain: 1
Bob Barr: 1
Not McCain: 1
Foreigners in our midst: 4
The lone Barr voter was none other than Jack Shafer, who calls Barr the "chowderhead's chowderhead."

Barr was robbed, but McCain at least got the right number of votes.
Let me hear those power chords:
MEET THE NEW BOSS
SAME AS THE OLD BOSS
Color me shocked!
Isn't there a law prohibiting this kind of prying by employers?
e
Color me shocked!
No! Not the Sharpies! NOT THE CRAYONS!
And, please, don't make that "O" backwards. It would be embarrassing.
A vote for McCain?
Sounds like someone checked the wrong box.
Do they have any employees from Palm Beach?
I look forward to the Slate people turning on Obama in the future as he bitterly disappoints them. Hopefully their knives will be sharp and long.

Yea, welfare as a Constitutional right will not be enough for them as soon as President Obama strays from the party line just a little.
In other news, nipple clamps.
Guy,
Hey, you read The Corner too!
Anyways, I doubt Obama can any wrong in their eyes. He could replace Biden with Dick Cheney and they would immediately applaud his bipartisanship.
I was wondering how long it would take TallDave to show his face.
I guess the B has faded enough to disappear under make-up.
Yet one more good deed by Shafer. Between this and his drug war reporting, I think I may have a man-crush on him.
TD,
I do read the Corner but did not peek at it today until you mentioned it. However, I did hear that welfare quip someplace recently, was not invented by me.
Nice one in that post about punitive damage awards for fatty food producers too! ty
I'm more interested in who each person on the Reason staff is voting for. I'm not here that often anymore, I may have missed it.
Cab,
Unless Nick has changed his voting policy, he is voting the same way I did for President.
Curious as you about the rest.
Wow. I would have expected Jacob Sleazeberg to vote Nader.
I must have missed something. When did Governor Palin tell all those educated city dwellers they weren't "real Americans"? Or is it like that "questioning my patriotism" thing where they know they are unpatriotic fake Americans so they just assume they are being called out?
The mainstream press doesn't tilt to the left though. Not even a little bit.
The best part is how ridiculous the "reasoning" behind the Obama votes is, without regard for the actual authority and power of the President who, last I checked, was not supposed to be omnipotent. We should always assume that people with whom we disagree are not stupid and have genuine reasons for disagreement, but sometimes it's hard.
Writers need steady income, health insurance, and money to pay back their school loans. They certainly can't be expected to pay for all that stuff at what they make!
I look forward to the Slate people turning on Obama in the future as he bitterly disappoints them. Hopefully their knives will be sharp and long.
It's only the energy gained by your restful vacation that gave you the strength to type that with a straight face.
Oh, SIV, you're so coy!
I must have missed something.
Yup.
Jack Shafer is very hard on Barr, citing the votes Barr cast in his conservative Republican days.
It seems a bit unfair not to note that Barr has repudiated many of these positions, and has been campaigning for years against the Patriot Act, long before he ran for president. More to the point, if the Libertarian Party is ever going to gain traction, it has to welcome prominent converts. If former Republicans and Democrats aren't allowed to "repent" and join the Libertarian Party, we are going to remain a permanent tiny minority.
"I must have missed something. When did Governor Palin tell all those educated city dwellers they weren't "real Americans"? Or is it like that "questioning my patriotism" thing where they know they are unpatriotic fake Americans so they just assume they are being called out?"
You're kidding, right? That was the entire Republican convention.
I thought that Shafer nailed it. I don't like any of these candidates including/especially Barr. I don't trust any of these candidates, including/especially Barr. But he at least says the right things, no matter how strongly I suspect that he doesn't mean them.

"...revealed their votes to the world, as reason staffers will do tomorrow."
Michael Kinsley, Founding Editor: Obama, of course
"Republican irresponsibility about tax cuts without spending cuts has bankrupted this country."
Does he really believe that this truth doesn't apply to Obama? Oh, I get it. Obama's spending increases are progressive.
C'mon guys (joe,BDB,El) everybody at Slate said Sarah Palin called educated city dwellers "not real Americans" Please cite where she said this.
Did Brezhnev get that high a percentage from the editors of Pravda?
Oh well, bias is only a problem if the biased party pretends to be objective.
I'm prepared to be dissappointed again with the Reason writers votes or lack thereof. It sucks to watch a bunch of supposedly libratarian hacks contort themselves every way possible to not vote in the interests of the party.

We believe - We believe that the best of America is in these small towns that we get to visit, and in these wonderful little pockets of what I call the real America, being here with all of you hard working very patriotic, um, very, um, pro-America areas of this great nation."

I think I used it all up just doing it. Damn!
Wow. I really would have expected it to be 58 in favor of Obama (+ 4 furners). Color me surprised as well.
Alas, Washington's farewell speech goes yet again unheeded.
C'mon guys (joe,BDB,El) everybody at Slate...
Whoa! How did I get dragged into this?
El,
My apologies if you haven't gone on about how Sarah Palin thinks eductaed urban dwellers aren't real Americans.
No problem, SIV.
Slate.
More like "Salon Jr.".
Excuse me, but why do we care what the writers at Slate think?
Then again, why does the reason staff care what Christopher Hitchens thinks?

He hates religious people (but especially those nasty Christians), so they're willing to be much more buddy-buddy with him.

Nah, anything that goes wrong during Obama's administration, should he win, will automatically be blamed as after effects of "8 years of Bush."
Is this even remotely surprising? I wonder how Olbermann is voting?
NOTHING HAS CHANGED IN GOVERNMENT BUT THE MEDIA'S NAVEL-GAZING HAS BECOME EVEN MORE INTENSE!

Bears repeating.
I've never really understood the whole atheism-libertarianism connection that seems to have been made by the reason staff. While I'm an agnostic and thus sort of fit the stereotype, most of my friends who agree with me politically are Christians, including two devout Catholics. The two most prominent libertarians in politics are Christians. And some of the least libertarian folks in history were atheists. Certainly Marx and Stalin fall into that category, among others.
Unless it's some sort of Randian thing, in which case I wish they'd follow her other ideas as closely.
I'm a big fan of Shafer's, and never miss his columns. That said, I'm pretty mystified by his (and many others') assertion that Barr is just faking. What motive would he have to do this? Apparently Barr's thought process is said to go like this:
1. Publicly repudiate true beliefs; pretend to be a libertarian
2. Win presidential nomination of third party viewed by the population at large as a joke
3. Work hard campaigning nonstop for months in the hope of getting more than 1% of the vote
4. ???
5. Profit!
thanks
