Scott Stantis' First Cartoon
Longtime reason cartoonist Scott Stantis, whose main gig is being the drawer-in-chief for The Birmingham News, recently celebrated his 30th year in the journalism biz. From his recent account of his first sale, to the San Pedro News-Pilot:
After saying goodbye, I ran out the door toward my dad who was parked across 7th Street. Blind with giddiness I danced across the street, not looking and darn near got run over. My father and I dancing in the middle of the street. He knew that I knew that this was a defining moment. It was wonderful to share that with him.
Years later, Lillian told me that she had called Jim out of his office. She asked what he had said to make me so happy. After explaining things, he looked out the glass doors at me and my father and said, "that has to be the happiest any one has ever been over 10 dollars".

It's a shame Prickly City is an unfunny piece of shit.
Less funny than Mallard Fillmore and Garfield and Day by Day and Luann and Dilbert combined.
And he still can't draw.
Prickly City runs from dull (most of them) to brilliant (an occaisional gem).
Wow, Art, nice send off. Also, I can't really speak for Prickly City, since I seldom read the newspaper, and the local doesn't get it anyway. From the 2-week sample they linked to @ Yahoo, however, there wasn't one that was less funny than the best strips I've ever seen of Mallard Fillmore, the past 20 years of Garfield or anything from Luann.
Nah, Prickly City's alright. I've only ever read it in "The Stars and Stripes" and I'll confess I've never been a regular reader.
In Prickly City's defense, Art, it's already been established that Marmaduke is the Gold Standard of Unfunny.
30 years in the business? I always figured his things were syndicated from a high school paper.
Can't Reason get that "Kelly" guy who does the editorial cartoons at The Onion?
The only funny one I can see is from May 14th. All the rest are way too wordy for very little payoff. I don't normally like to bash, but those are pretty bad. But hey, if he's selling, there's gotta be somebody buying and getting jollies.

No, it's gotta be Cathy. Marmaduke is merely neutral mush, the tofu of cartoons. Cathy is actively irritating, the poison ivy of cartoons.
LMFAO, I knew I wasn't the only fan on this site! I could imagine how many letters to the editor that cartoon would inspire if it were taken out of context.

reason has been digging The Onion's cartoons for sometime now. Go here.
Next up, Reason links to and publishes all the editorial cartoons penned by the Peanut Gallery here at Hit and Run.
Congrats to Stantis.
The ten dollar dance is classic. I love it.
