Turn On, Tune In, Drop Deap: LSD Inventor Albert Hofmann, RIP
The creator of LSD, Albert Hofmann, is dead at the ripe old age of 102 (he's pictured at the right by artist Alex Gray). The man who launched a thousand trips first synthesized the drug in 1938 and then learned of its hallucinatory effects five years later, after accidentally ingesting it.
From the NY Times obit:
[Hofmann] then took LSD hundreds of times, but regarded it as a powerful and potentially dangerous psychotropic drug that demanded respect. More important to him than the pleasures of the psychedelic experience was the drug's value as a revelatory aid for contemplating and understanding what he saw as humanity's oneness with nature. That perception, of union, which came to Dr. Hofmann as almost a religious epiphany while still a child, directed much of his personal and professional life….
Though Dr. Hofmann called LSD "medicine for the soul," by 2006 his hallucinogenic days were long behind him, he said in the interview that year.
"I know LSD; I don't need to take it anymore," he said, adding. "Maybe when I die, like Aldous Huxley."
But he said LSD had not affected his understanding of death. In death, he said, "I go back to where I came from, to where I was before I was born, that's all."
As someone who has taken LSD, I'd like to say thank you, Dr. Hofmann. As a fan of rock music, I'd like to thank him, too, for indirectly inspiring the greatest couplet set to music ("Things ain't what they used to be/Cary Grant's on LSD").
Far more important, Hofmann's "problem child" (as he wryly dubbed his discovery) has been a major and generally positive influence through many aspects of society, from the obvious (such as mind expansion trips of Timothy Leary and many others) to the less obvious (including the personal computer revolution). Blowing peoples' minds is never an easy thing, and not always a good thing, but Hofmann is an inspiring figure, in large part because he never lost his taste for scientific inquiry and rational analysis while expanding the borderlands of human consciousness.
Update: Spelling of Hofmann's name corrected multiple times.
Belated Hat tip: Pig Mannix.
More Update: Alan Vanneman blogs, "I'd like to thank Dr. Hofman (with irony) for indirectly inspiring the very worst joke I ever heard (courtesy of the unlamented London Lee): 'Did you hear about the hippie who mixed LSD with prune juice? He really took a trip!'"

Upon seeing that picture, it occurred to me that the aesthetic was very much like the cover art for Tool's Lateralus. And it's no wonder, as I came to find out with some brief googling, since it turns out Alex Grey did the cover art on that album.
Tool's music is just one of the many things that can be said to have been positively influenced by Hoffman's fortuitous (if somewhat mixed-bag) discovery of LSD, and for that I am grateful, if nothing else.
"The man who launched a thousand trips first synthesized the drug in 1938 and then learned of its hallucinatory effects five years later, after accidentally ingesting it."
So what was he using it for, during the five-year interval?
So what was he using it for, during the five-year interval?
It was invented as a migraine drug, it is chemically related to ergot migraine drugs like ergotamine and dihydroergotamine.
What a tragedy, imagine how long he could have lived had he not taken dru... oh wait...
It was invented as a migraine drug, it is chemically related to ergot migraine drugs like ergotamine and dihydroergotamine.
Apparently (anecdotally, at least) it is somewhat effective at that purpose, too.
I believe IIRC that was actually a plot point for a House episode.
As a fan of rock music, I'd like to thank him, too, for indirectly inspiring the greatest couplet set to music
I don't know how much inspiration LSD contributed, but the "greatest couplet set to music" is undeniably: Meet the new boss/Same as the old boss
Didn't work on my migraines when I was in college. Now that I'm in my 40s I'll have to try again.
@ Mad Max
He wasn't using it at all. His job was to take ergotine from ergot, a fungus that infects rye grain, and find all the little chemicals in it. LSD happened to be one of them.
It's much the same way as Merck first synthesized MDMA in 1912, IIRC, but didn't do anything with it because they found more promising chemicals (they were looking for a diet aid, I think).
It makes one wonder what other things have been synthesized/created that have never been tested -for good or ill.
I believe IIRC that was actually a plot point for a House episode.
You are correct. I believe House injected himself with something that would cause migraines (I forget the reason; shit, it's House after all) and then took the acid to relieve the pain. Cameron found him tripping; it was funny.
House was trying to prove that a med school rival's new migraine drug didn't work, IIRC.
Whoa, dude, my migraine is gone, but now I've got a bunch of demons trying to open up my head with a giant corkscrew. . .
Whoa, dude, my migraine is gone, but now I've got a bunch of demons trying to open up my head with a giant corkscrew. . .
Then I would say your migraine is still there dude. Yikes, I have one today and I hate them.
I find the title of your article offensive and pathetic.
I find the title of your article offensive and pathetic.
Not much for medical advancements are we now!
2nd poor taste headline
Nick, more "offensive" headlines please. Needling the squares is a good thing.
Episiarch,
Thank you. I can't believe some people can't handle this.
House was trying to prove that a med school rival's new migraine drug didn't work, IIRC.
Yup, that's it.
Was it here on reason that I saw the article about a 60s LSD experiment in Canada for treating alcoholism? I think it was.
You'd honor the good doctor more by spelling his name the way he did.
The article you quote from has it right: Hofmann
I'm going to listen to "Lost Keys (Blame Hoffman)" in honor of Hoffman right now.
RIP.
Does anything work on a migraine? I've tried everything on the medical market and nothing works, not even a shot of demeral...still feel it through the high....it's just the degree of pain your feelin.
I guess I'm not hip enough to know what "Deap" means.
Bill Hicks may have said it best;
http://youtube.com/watch?v=AXmzcroUmdU
Wow, has Gillespie directly admitted to illegal drug use before? I thought that was.....taboo!
I took a lot of LSD, but my best trips were on psilocybin.
Migraines: I use 4 ibuprofen, 1 can of Coke, a small handful of 60% choc chips & nap -- works like a charm, but better to prevent them with ibuprofen before they get full blown. Tried the other meds, nothing works as well. Keeping sinuses drained helps too -- guafenesin as needed. Plus I stopped eating wheat. Gluten-free helps decrease migraines by about 50% for me. I only buy Coca-Cola for migraines 🙂
[Hoffman] then took LSD hundreds of times, but regarded it as a powerful and potentially dangerous psychotropic drug that demanded respect.
Like Hoffman, I took numerous journeys with acid. I also decided that as a "powerful and potentially dangerous psychotropic drug that demanded respect." It was definitely useful for introspection as well as an aid to fun, carefree camaraderie. I've never had a bad trip and never once confused hallucinations with reality.
I've even recommended its use to stable, intellegent friends. I do not know anybody at H&R well enough to recommend it to. It is a dangerous drug for many people, but I found it useful for learning about myself.
RIP, Albert Hoffman. If I had access to LSD I'd take a trip honor you.
I dropped LSD for the first time last week. God bless you Dr. Hoffman.
figgypuddin,
Thanks for the info. I've found ibuprofen to do nothing at all. Chocoholic, that's me but that doesn't work either. Eventually I loose my ability to speak, (wrong letter sounds come out) and vision too. But I'll try the combo. Not now already popped two Fiorinal and flying high enough to kiss the sky (still have the pain).
Commercial for the short lived "LSD headache remedy"
BOSS: Myron, you still haven't finished the Gustavson report?
MYRON: [holding head in hands] No, boss, my migraine headache is just killing me.
BOSS: Then take some of the new LSD Migraine-B-Gone. It works wonders!
[Later]
MYRON: Boss, I still haven't finished that report, but I have received several key insights into the fundamental nature of reality.
BOSS: Quiet, Myron! I'm trying to ascend to the doors of perception on the back of an ancient Assyrian God. Take a few days off so I can complete my quest.
ANNOUNCER: The LSD Migraine-B-Gone. Lose the headache, reach pinnacles of enlightenment. From the BC Corporation. While supplies last.

My thoughts exactly. LSD isn't for stupid people who would confuse the hallucinations with reality. I always thought of hallucinations as cool entertainment kind of like when I saw Star Wars (I) for the first time. "Whoa, cool, did you see that?"
Nice Mad Max...........and I'm tryin to work while checking this. Next I'll upload vacant house pics to this thread.
an aid to fun, carefree camaraderie
That's all I ever got out of it. And a kind of "swirly" effect that I never once confused for a "hallucination". But still, good times.
Cindy, check your inbox... assuming that's your real addy 🙂
I don't get the impression that Mr. Gillespie or the commenters have met many people who really screwed up their lives by tripping too many times on LSD. Some never got the use of their minds back. Some had psychotic episodes. That's not propaganda. Go visit some mental hospitals. Talk to the men in white coats who actually had to deal with the aftermath of the psychedelic revolution.
I don't blame Hofmann for this, incidentally. But I do blame the sick people who turned a drug into a utopian panacea.
Cindy,
Have you ever tried Maxalt or any of the other dissolve-under-the-tongue vasoconstrictors? They work great for me. Gets rid of them so fast it is actually disorienting to be suddenly pain-free.
Although, based on my experience, avoid sedatives for migraines (some idiot doctors still give them to you.) It didn't dull the pain enough for me to fall asleep, but I was too lethargic to get up and take something else. Four hours of unable-to-move crushing pain.
NutraSweet - That's exactly what Vicodin did to me and my migraines. I lay for hours in my bed, paralyzed, unable to sleep, and in just as much pain as when I'd started. Maybe more. That shit sucked donkey balls, if I may use a ladylike turn-of-phrase.
Bronwyn, I have it up because I'm working and my staff is overloading me. Nothing yet, but the massive emails may have delayed it.
SugarFree, Vasoconstrictors make them worse for me. The hospital tried that and you should have seen them all scrambling into action at the reaction I had. My husband FREAKED THE HELL OUT!
Bronwyn, I have a better lady like term....sucked big camel balls.
As to the topic at hand, I have to echo disgusted, at least partially. LSD appears to have been great (groovy?) for loads of people, but there are some for whom it was a life-ending drug.
It's what triggered my uncle's schizophrenia.
And before you jump on me, not I said "triggered", not "caused". I know he was already primed and ready for it. The LSD was put him over the edge.
Since I'm me, I figure it's due to some inherited predisposition. So as long as people with no family history of the crazies are the only ones dropping acid, it's all good. Just keep it away from the crazies and the apt-to-be crazies.
"I'm going to listen to "Lost Keys (Blame Hoffman)" in honor of Hoffman right now."
I've never taken hallucinogens and probably never will, but I'll put on "Third Eye" for a good approximation. RIP Hofmann.
As someone who has taken LSD, I'd like to say thank you, Dr. Hofmann.
Me, too. Me, too.
I don't know of anyone who's ever had bona fide hallucinations (seeing things that weren't there) on LSD. You do tend to see things that actually are there in a very different light.
"Hallucinations" is a loaded term. I was sitting in near dark with a friend of mine while tripping and I could have sworn he took his head off and put it in his lap. However, the near dark helped.
Also, auditory hallucinations are more common than visual ones.
I don't blame Hofmann for this, incidentally. But I do blame the sick people who turned a drug into a utopian panacea.
Deifying any tool leads to bad consequences. Cars kill people all the time. Psychotropic tools are no different; they come with benefits and risks.
Of course, making a tool illegal makes it harder to get accurate information about those benefits and risks, making the tool all the more dangerous. I fucking hate drug warriors.
And love Erowid. Going in with eyes open is the only way to do it.
I had one good friend who went to the hospital due to stupid actions on LSD (~25-30 doses) said the ER instead of the expected 2. He thought he had to save us before the clock hit a certain number, got naked, and put himself through my double pane window. Almost died of blood loss. That was a horrible morning. I was sixteen. He spent significant time in a psychiatric facility.
I've had one other friend who spent time in a psychiatric facility as well after frequent journeys. She was, however, predisposed to schizophrenia (sp?)
Personally, it gave me alternate perspectives which helped me to come to terms with serious depression.
All in all, I'm a supporter of a psycadelic experience, but like all things, especially dealing with the mind, moderation and respect are required.
R.I.P Hoffman, and hopefully all your good works will not rest with you.
And good call on the Tool tunes. Saw them live at radio city, alex grey had body painted the band members, and he was a few rows behind me. Good show.
I think it is no accident that Lost Keys (blame Hoffman) and Rosetta Stoned seem to describe a decidedly *mixed* trip experience; not exactly the most pleasant trip, but not exactly a bad trip either...and it does end up in a hospital.
It makes one wonder what other things have been synthesized/created that have never been tested -for good or ill.
I tried a research chemical in college (legally from the internet) called 2CI. It felt like a cleaner, more visual version of LSD.
Unfortunately, I can't get this stupid green gnome to stop following me...
In the 70's (I'm dating myself here) my father was on the First Aid Squad and was called out one night very late. The next night at dinner he complained about the Squirrel he picked up that had a bad trip. The poor guy sat at the back of the rig in a ball repeating over and over, bury me! That was the only bad trip I ever heard about. I never heard a follow up to that one.
Taxtix,
Good luck with that green gnome
Bronwyn, I got your email and responded.
I have a very fond memory of tripping with friends in high school, watching a Planet of the Apes marathon with the sound turned off, making up our own crazy-ass dialog.
And yes, J sub D, one must be retarded to confuse acid hallucinations with reality. Sorry folks, a tree's leaves don't form into geometric patterns on their own.
It has been many years since I took LSD but there was a brief period where I used it quite frequently and got quite adept at parceling out blotter acid to control dose so I could be functional yet very high at the same time. (there were a number of days in high school where I would mildly trip the afternoon away.)
A couple of observations:
1) Aside from smiling so hard that the back of my neck hurt, and the mental vacancy of the following morning, LSD remains my favorite drug (even though I have not used it in years)
2) At high enough doses I certainly experienced visual hallucinations. I was chased by giants, levitated over my own body, truly believed I had turned into a werewolf (furry clawed arms and all), among others.
3) One of my last trips (and possibly the reason I gave it up) I foolishly took a very large dose in cube form (actually it was like a little cylinder of soaking wet sugar) and ended up unable to escape from a park for almost 2 days. That trip included a flight on a now impossible to describe metal object. Interestingly I was with my friend T and he had the exact same experience....
4) There is a nine-hour version of Riders On The Strom. They played it on the radio, I heard it, that is all.
Ultimately I think it might be a too powerful drug in many respects, but I relish the memories of my wasted youth. I would do it all again.
PLEASE change the title to this article. What were you thinking? The man is dead and this is your headline? Ugh...
That illustration makes the late Mr. Hoffman look like a previously unknown member of Gong.
Never touched the acid myself, but the funny mushrooms were enjoyable.
"So as long as people with no family history of the crazies are the only ones dropping acid, it's all good."
Half of my family is nuts, and taking LSD made me feel more sane, if anything.
There is a nine-hour version of Riders On The Strom
My god, there is a nine hour song about riding Strom Thurmond?
Ooops... "Riders on the Storm" C'mon a nine hour song about riding Strom Thurmond? What, you think I was tripping?... Oh, wait ....
At high enough doses I certainly experienced visual hallucinations.
I never took any massive doses, and I don't believe any of my buddies did either, so that may explain why we never saw that kind of crazy shit.
Mushrooms, now, I remember one shared hallucination (which, in retrospect, are really frightening) about satellites shooting pink laser beams into our brains, causing all kinds of insights that just . . . slipped . . . away as we came out of it.
Yeah, baby, I still got it . . . nine hours, baby!
Alrighty then, someone now owes me a new monitor and key board.
Some of the best and worst times of my life were spent with a few hundred mics permeating my cerebral cortex. Although now I have a hard time seeing stars(constant multi-colored background noise) and reading books(black on white text tends to strobe).
I think the problem with LSD is that the people who use it probably don't need to, and the people that need to probably never use it. But such is life I guess.
Farewell good doctor.
And before you jump on me, not I said "triggered", not "caused". I know he was already primed and ready for it. The LSD was put him over the edge.
That explains my reticence in recommeding its use to people. It is powerful stuff.
I have a very fond memory of tripping with friends in high school, watching a Planet of the Apes marathon with the sound turned off, making up our own crazy-ass dialog.
I have one from around 1975 of spending a night with a friend listening to "Anyone's Daughter" by Deep Purple about 300 times in a row. For some reason, we found the song irresistibly funny.
Finally, around 3:00 AM, my friend's mom came downstairs and said, "C'mon, guys, it's a great song, but...".
Seeing us prostrated on the living room floor, laughing our asses off, she realized reasoning with us would be useless. She just smiled, shook her head, and went back upstairs to bed...
I took way too much of that drug in my youth....
If I still knew where to get it, I'd take it again in a heartbeat!
Oh wow man, my legs are 10 feet long ... and when I stepped off the curb, the street was like a water bed ...
RIP.
It is true that dropping clear window pane is nothing less then the titanic myopic ascension to the God Head. But that was back in the 70's. Can't do anything like that anymore. Things are too fragile.
I tried mushrooms for the first time last week but I have yet to try LSD. Anyone ever watch that trippy Mr. Rogers video when they were off the deep end?
I had a friend who pretty much got lost after dosing once too often. I don't think "family history" necessarily has anything to do with it, I think personal history is what matters. If someone's close to being overwhelmed, this is the drug that can finish the job.
Of course, I've known a lot of people to use and enjoy, as well.
Did you hear about the woman who mixed LSD with her birth control pill?
She wanted to take a trip without the kids.
Forgive me. I forgot to credit that joke to Henny Youngman--badump-dump.
Thank you Dr. H - will take the sacrament in your honor this weekend - bon voyage y'all
God rest you, Dr. Hofmann. I only took acid once, but it remains one of the most important experiences of my life. I think if you do it too often, you're probably doing it for the wrong reasons, and it should be taken with some consideration and an appropriate respect for its power, by those of a reasonably stable state of mind.
disgusted - Not to come down too hard on you, but come on, do you really believe all those old urban legends? If you look into their history, you'll find that's exactly what they are. Every single illegal drug gets demonized by the prudes and the drug warriors - who feel morally empowered to tell lies, because they're doing it for a good cause! - and the mass media is their mindless parrot, eager to repeat any horror stories. Sure, acid makes you crazy and makes you stare at the sun and damages your DNA...just like marihuana causes White women to be consumed with lust for Negro jazz musicians, and cocaine makes Negroes uncontrollably violent, and PCP makes users immune to pain and gives them the strength of 10, etc. etc.
Seriously, if we looked at relative harm, we'd legalize LSD and ban alcohol.
"has been a major and generally positive influence through many aspects of society"
Other than the 13th Floor Elevators, I can't think of one positive contribution that LSD has made to society....I'm all for legalization, only because drug laws make a bad thing worse. I'm with the Conservatives on this one (even if most of them don't own a copy of EASTER EVERYWHERE)
It cures migrains?? Son-of-a-@@@! I thought it triggered my migrains and stopped dropping it because of them. Now you tell me? Oh, well. Cindy, I can only relate my own migrain remedy - nothing. I spent 9 months with a migrain that would not stop. Several neurologists (and lots of useless drugs) later I met one who told me that if I stopped treating them, my body would learn to cope and I could live with reasonable amount of pain, and simply throw back some ibuprofen ONLY when it became unbearable (or I get a really impressive aura that says "here I come"). So I did and I do. It's still there, and still hurts when I think about it, but it's a lot better than fighting and losing.
Migraines were my nemesis for many years -- tried most of the recommendations -- removed foods (chocolate, caffeine, wheat, etc.) -- and tried many of the legal migraine relieving drugs and a number of illegal drugs. After observing and really watching the onset and when and how it happened I discovered that under stress I reduced my breathing - it would become shallow and I was close to holding my breath. (well maybe those illegals did help to watch myself with more efficiency...) Pretty evident what needed to be done (reduce stress but that is not always so easy)... breathe, deep breathing and watch for any indications of a migraine and extend the inhale and exhale. pranayama breathing is best ...have not had a migraine since I discoverd this. Thanks Albert.

Everything I've ever read on LSD, most other hallucinogens and dissociatives (particularly NMDA antagonists), and psychoactive cannabinoids suggests that use of these drugs has a weak but statistically-significant correlation with incidence of schizophrenia.
Now, we can run 'round the mulberry tree all day on correlation/causation, drug seeking as an expression of self-medication, etc. but the correlation itself is pretty clear.
Just because harm is exaggerated does not mean there is no harm at all.
If I still knew where to get it, I'd take it again in a heartbeat!
Concur. Make it available and I'll be down on the riverfront watching the sunrise as I'm getting off. Maybe spend a couple of hours at the art institute, go into a casino for laughs, that kind of evil acid freak insanity that causes so much harm to society.
If I still knew where to get it, I'd take it again in a heartbeat!
Ahh if only Jerry was still alive...
Was i right in reading that someone said their friend took 25-30 hits of LSD and then ended up in a psychiatric hospital????
Please tell me what..... do you ever take 25-30 of???
IF you take that much of anything at one time besides maybe Skittles or M&Ms you are gonna have a problem. Even those might give you a cavity at least. Why do people make choices like this and then they blame the substance.
NOOOOOO it is the monkey that shoved the absurd amount of that substance in their mouth that has to live with the choices it makes.
MonkLover,
Thank you. The support and advice today has been above and beyond. Bronwyn offered advice as well. I explained to her in private email that I've had 6 bad head injuries because I got on many a horse I shouldn't have (with a helmet)and crashed and burned badly. Also other factors as well play into this. Ibuprophen does nothing for me. I tried that when my arm was in a full cast in 2003 and it didn't touch it. I can fully relate to your 9 monther there. Hell wasn't it!
Taz,
Breathing....innerestin...I will watch that. You may have something there. I have a stressful vocation. Own my own business in the Mortgage Field Industry. (not pushing Mtgs either, the your losing your house end) Maybe why I have one today, stress mixed with hormones.
As for the good Chemist we are discussing today, he lived a good long life and proved all the government info shoved down our throats about that drug was all BS. 102, we should all live that long. May he never be forgotten.
J sub D,
What casino do you live near? I live 30mins from a whole bunch of them.
Hofmann's discovery changed my life completely. I took LSD for the first time one week before I turned 18, and I have ingested it for spiritual purposes several times since then. I will be 20 in a few months and ingesting LSD has been one of the most eye-opening and healing experiences I have had.
It is a beautiful drug to be respected and loved, and I personally feel infinite appreciation for Hofmann and his incredible dedication and work.
P.S. It is also used to induce labor in women about to give birth because of the effects it has on the contractions of the muscles in the uterus,
HA! We caught you! Get in the truck, druggie!
P.S. It is also used to induce labor in women about to give birth because of the effects it has on the contractions of the muscles in the uterus,
Wow, I never heard of that. I can't complain about my two rounds with that but it would have been nice to try it out. My OB would have definitely needed a catcher's mit, which he threatened to get if I had a 3rd one.
May God and Death take you into the Eternal Trip. See ya soon Buddy. Can't Wait.
Here's a thought. We are all talking about LSD which has long been tagged as dangerous right? But think about this there is also Pot and it's deemed illegal too as well as others. It's makes no sense. If a person kills someone or robs or injurys another person, then fine there's the crime. But to add the drug conviction in there is ridiculous. Our courts and jails are clogged and with real drug addictions we all know that arrest, being socked with a record and jail term is crazy, not to mention damaging to that person's life. These people don't belong in court or jail for drugs. There are people to help the addicts out. Jail and all of the above do not stop the use. Recreational....have at it. I'm not saying that everyone should go out and play with heroine. That's another story. It's highly addictive and the first high cannot be achieved after the first time, so the person is always searching for the original high which leads to a real mess. I'm sure most of you can agree with me on this. We need to abolish the *war on drugs*, it's sensless.
I often debate whether i'd be happier/more at home being young at this time or during the "hippie days".
The internet alone almost makes this time better, but the music, the drugs, and the cheaper college make it tougher to call.
"The internet alone almost makes this time better, but the music, the drugs, and the cheaper college make it tougher to call."
But the music and the drugs are still here, just a little faded with age.
RIP, Dr. Feelgood 🙂
I knew dozens and dozens of people who took acid/mescaline/shrooms during the early 80s and never heard of any having problems besides vomiting.
A friend once spent an affternoon in high school tripping, he kept giggling through latin class, I thought it was a waste of good drugs.
I did see a lamp start to pulse glowing purple and melt down a desk, othewise it was mostly seeing trails and understanding how alive trees were during camping trips.
Other than the 13th Floor Elevators, I can't think of one positive contribution that LSD has made to society
Well, not counting all the enjoyment and (perceived) insight/enlightenment, of course.
I object to this horrible headline. Albert turned on and died peacefully 65 years later, at the ripe old age of 102. May he rest in peace.
I would also like to thank the late, great Albert Hofmann on his discovery.
Though it's been 20 years since I last took LSD, the positive, life affirming changes it brought about me will remain forever in my mind. I'd like to do it one more time someday.
Other than the 13th Floor Elevators, I can't think of one positive contribution that LSD has made to society
I don't know what the 13th floor elevators are, Barry, but to refute you, let me paraphrase, or quote near as memory permits, the late, great Bill Hicks:
If you don't think drugs have done anything good for us, I want you to do me a favor. Go home tonight, get all your records, albums, cassettes, cds and burn them. Because the artists that made that beautiful music you like so much? Reaaaaallllll fuckin' high on drugs.
the innominate one,
The 13th Floor Elevators are one of the best psychedelic rock bands EVAR.
A friend once spent an affternoon in high school tripping, he kept giggling through latin class, I thought it was a waste of good drugs.
I did this once, too, and I agree with you -- total waste of good drugs. My reaction was basically, uh, I'm still in English class, and it's still as sucky as ever.
In honor and commemoration of Hofmann, I went to a psychedelic rock concert tonight. Dead Meadow, and opening was the Mannequin Men. This is not news to anybody, but...
Orange. stack. amps. are. loud.
Don't forget Kary Mullis, the nobel-winning discoverer of the Polymerase Chain Reaction, one of the bedrocks of biotechnology. According to the wiki article, he was a fan of Hofmann's work.
If TV is an opiate of the masses, then the Internet is a psychdelic.
