Ron Paul Reaction: The Roundup
Since no one was truly surprised by Hillary Clinton's fundraising take (She leads by 20 points and she outraised Obama? Cancel the election!), Ron Paul's millions are the political story of the week. Sometime Reasonoid Jeremy Lott re-introduces the candidate to Politico readers:
The congressman's sometimes hyperbolic rhetoric is important to attract a broad coalition of anti-war voters, libertarians, gold bugs, small-government Republicans and potheads.
The uncomfortable truth for both supporters and opponents is that Paul isn't nearly as "crazy" as he occasionally sounds.
David Mark (read his reason cover story on negative campaigning) talked to libertarians to see if they'd bought Dr. No Christmas ornaments yet:
David Boaz, executive vice president of the libertarian CATO Institute, said Paul's campaign is pulling in traditional Republicans disaffected with the GOP's federal spending binge during the six years it controlled Congress during George W. Bush's presidency. And while independent voters and even some Democrats may have contributed to Paul's totals, it demonstrates more of an anti-war sentiment among the Republican primary electorate than may have previously been thought.
"Everything that was wrong with the Republicans in 2006, Ron Paul is an answer to," Boaz said. "He clearly is reaching a national constituency."
Allahpundit fears a Paul third-party run (something the man has denied many times):
He's got the bread, he's got the messianism, and he's got plenty of antipathy towards the current Republican front-runner. It'll be verrrry interesting to see if evangelical leaders give him a look going forward as a possible protest vote against Rudy. His war stance probably makes it impossible but he's got all the right moves on abortion and the fact that he's an Ob/Gyn by trade can't hurt. Assuming evangelicals steer clear, can he still do enough damage to Rudy in the swing states to tilt them to Hillary? I'm thinking … yeah, sure. He appeals to the fringe of enough conservative subgroups that two or three percent isn't out of the question.
But the Paul people I talk to are really excited about opinion outside the blogs: The TV news reporters who are suddenly taking him seriously. ABC News, whose George Stephanopolous famously told him he'd "bet every cent" in his pocket that Paul would lose, tracked down Paul for an interview and ran a snippet in prime time.

As I walked up the ramp to the ferry this morning (at 5 am!) there was a guy holding a RP sign and handing out cards. Awesome.
Not quite the MSM, but the New York Observer had this:
http://www.observer.com/2007/ron-paul-has-lots-money
You know, if the guy laughed once in a while he'd be unstoppable.
I've started seeing Ron Paul signs on major roads here in Pittsburgh. Even a couple of big banner type ones on an overpass.
The volunteers here seem to be getting pretty active.
Whoo the pittsburgh people rule! I met some of them in New Hampshire - you should go join! Just don't get freaked out by the Truthers.
Also, Stephanopolus must feel like an epic douchebag.
Some dude handed me an RP flier a couple days ago, as I was walking into the post office. We had a good chat. As I recall, he was not affiliated with any group. He was just excited about Ron Paul's campaign and decided to take it on himself to order fliers and dole them out in public.
i just donated more money once i heard he raised 5 million.
He can not be ignored.
Like Glen Close in Fatal Attraction?
I'm starting to get excited about this. I'm going to go donate too.
"If the mafia attacks someone in this country, we don't bomb Italy."
~ Ron Paul on the Steve Gill Show
I have a Ron Paul yard sign in my front yard, and my wife sent a contribution last month.
We have links to some of the stories on Ron Paul's fundraising on our blog http://www.libertariansforpaul.com
"Why do you think your supporters are so enthusiastic about you and your campaign?"
"...sometimes I simplify and I say, Well, I guess freedom is popular."
Yahooooooooooooooooooo!
After the last election, if someone had told me that, in 2007, I'd be standing on a street corner waving a 2008 presidential candidate's sign over my head, I'd have laughed at them.
and yet...
Yesterday, I drug my anarcho-capitalist ass downtown to participate in a meetup.com coordinated Ron Paul rally.
Hope springs eternal and all that...
David Weigel, thank you for a great article! Ron Paul is finally getting fair and balanced coverage, and I really believe that his popularity will skyrocket now. I'm 52, and have donated my hard earned cash for the 1st time in my life. I worry that this could be our last chance to turn the country around.
haha i was going for a fatal attraction reference, glad someone caught it. Her statement fits if the tone does not.
Saw some Ron Paul sign-wavers at Lovefest in San Francisco this past weekend. I've seen more twice the number of grassroots supporters for RP than I have for any of the other candidates, and not always at hemp-besotten weirdo conventions like Lovefest. (For instance, I saw many of them at Taste of Chicago as well.)
a broad coalition of anti-war voters, libertarians, gold bugs, small-government Republicans and potheads
That's what, 10% of the voting population, tops?
Ron Paul is actually getting people excited about voting and participating in the election. And no he doesn't just appeal to the marginalized internet loonies. People have been apathetic about other presidential candidates because they all have the same pathetic bandaid solutions to US problems.
He's the only Republican primary candidate with a student group here at Texas A&M. That's pretty impressive for the home of the George Bush (41) Presidential Library.
I've seen sidewalk chalk advertising and sign-waving students all over campus. (Too busy to join them, I'm afraid. But I've donated.)
Gig 'em, Dr. Paul!
anti-war last I checked 70% of Americans
Saw a huge banner along I-95 North, just north of West Palm Beach.
It said: "The Ron Paul Revolution has Begun"
Yes it has...
if the guy laughed once in a while he'd be unstoppable
Hillary laughs, and she's unstoppable. Truly, she's the Juggernaut-Bitch.
ABC News, whose George Stephanopolous famously told him he'd "bet every cent" in his pocket that Paul would lose
More than anything, I want to live to see that smarmy grin permanently erased from that punks face as he tries to kiss up to the Paul administration.
10% of the population that actually voted would be great.
The congressman's sometimes hyperbolic rhetoric is important to attract a broad coalition of anti-war voters, libertarians, gold bugs, small-government Republicans and potheads
Many of us fit into multiple categories.
Ron Paul laughs, he just has to hear something funny. Like me, apologizing that he might be upset about the "Strippers for Ron Paul" segment on Tucker. I shouldn't have worried or apologized because he gets it and was happy for the exposure. Of course, it didn't hurt that I'd donated at least $1000 that day.
Hillary laughs, and she's unstoppable.
Whenever that bitch-cow laughs, a big fucking chill runs up my spine and I unconsciously reach for a firearm.
I support Paul not only because his platform is inline with mine, but more importantly that's what's important to him. Rarely does he ever talk about himself and that's refreshing in this field of egomaniacs.
miche,
Maybe I should rephrase. Personally, I like the fact that Ron Paul sticks to the issues. But let's face it people reading this blog and Tivoing debates are pretty hard core political junkies, and generally very deep thinkers. Unfortunately, that does't describe the voting masses. I think he'd do much better in raising his poll numbers and broadening his appeal if he showed more than one side of his personality. Tell a joke. Like, say he's seen way more pussy than Bill Clinton, yet been totally faithful to his wife. Or something.
As a pilot of subsea equipment, I see Dr. Paul as an opportunity for America to regain some of it's prior glory(before WW I). I see getting GOVERNMENT OUT OF MY LIFE as much as possible the ultimate goal. I have been a Republican since 1977 and just went along from ignorance. It took my becoming 48 years old to realize that voting for the lesser of to evils is still just evil!! My meet-up group, unlike the media reports is not made up of many young people. Out of 63 people only 6 are under 35 years old. This is what the Republican party does not understand. I don't necessarily agree with everything Ron Paul is for but, He will decide as his record has proven.
People say he must work with Congress but, I disagree, Worst case we have government NOT growing, and both Democrats and Republicans become marginalized because the INDIVIDUAL will rule. Wouldn't this be a great thing!
I do not look for the government to do anything for me. I can take care of my family,(Parents, children, cousins, aunts, uncles) without the government's help. BUTT OUT!!!
Yes, Ron Paul Revolution signs here in Minneapolis as well. Saw them on I-394 as well as on an overpass on 169. Ron Paul is a great hope for America. Intelligent, ethical, charismatic enough to pull in the votes, and Jake is dead-on about the no ego. Only problem is the age, though (but then, he looks better than McCain). I heard Fox News complained about the amount of audience support he got at the Republican debates. What did they expect?
PS Juggernaut-Bitch! HA!!!
This shows Ron Paul cannpt be ignored by the media anymore.
His fund raising has been really amazing. I hope he gets at least a prime speaking spot at the convention. Though the Party of War may prevent that even if he does get a decent amount of delegates.
Graphite, I saw those RPers at the LoveFest. While I was talking to them, a few partiers came up, whooped, for RP, and high-fived the placard carriers.
A lot of folks I meet these days have a neutral-to-positive reaction to RP.
Rudy laughs. I don't think it helps him much.
Jim,
Rudy's leading. I think adding the dimension of laughing or smiling or openly rooting for the Yankees is a quality that Ron Paul lacks, to his own detriment. Dubya didn't get elected (twice!!) on his intellect and foreign policy stance.
Rudy's leading. I think adding the dimension of laughing or smiling or openly rooting for the Yankees is a quality that Ron Paul lacks, to his own detriment. Dubya didn't get elected (twice!!) on his intellect and foreign policy stance.
I agree only if Dr. P starts rooting for the Steelers. He was born in the Pittsburgh area, don't cha know?
Rudy doesn't laugh, he sneers.
"I agree only if Dr. P starts rooting for the Steelers. He was born in the Pittsburgh area, don't cha know?"
Nope. Got to be the Patriots.
He was ignored in NPR's news blurb about fundraising leading off today's All Things Considered. The lead line was about Mittens loaning himself millions more and then there was a comment about the rest of the repub field not increasing donations as much as desired. McCain was referred to for his 6 mil or whatever but the cheering encouragement in my head was for naught as Ron Paul was neglected. GRRRRR
I have held out for a long time, but I am officially a Ron Paul supporter. I can't say I agree with everything he says, but at least I know that what he is saying isnt based on poll numbers or coated with political sugar by advisors to make it easier for the public to swallow.
Something that RP says in the interview is that he looks at his campaign as sort of a bottom-up organization. I think he's spot on. He's modest, clearly very analytical in his intelligence... I agree with sixstring about showing additional personality. But I don't think RUDY-type personality would work for him. He needs to use wit for his jokes
mynemyne -
write an angry letter to them about it telling them what you think. They read select letters on Thursdays on Morning Edition (I think...)
Although if it's really as big of a conspiracy as sometimes NPR seems, they wouldn't read it anyway.
not angry angry... but you know, upset. complaining.
"not angry angry... but you know, upset. complaining."
Right -- tell them sheesh you donate at every pledge drive because you believe their one sided coverage of the news is the right side.
"Right -- tell them sheesh you donate at every pledge drive because you believe their one sided coverage of the news is the right side."
If by "one sided" you mean "willfully ignorant of the fact that every politician/political analyst/"economist"/business analyst/etc. they're interviewing is a complete and total fake/incompetent"
I think Ron Paul supporters can be summed up in one line from "The Network"
I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!
I've supported Ron Paul before supporting Ron Paul was cool and I will continue to do so. People are figuring it out and thank god they are.
I was about to crack a joke about Dondero's lack of comment on all this, and apparently Eric is actually missing. According to his "Mainstream Libertarian" site:
Make of that what you will, folks.
What happens to the money the losers have left over?
Ron Paul seemed to have a pretty good sense of humor on the Daily Show and the Colbert Report.
Even though he's a bit radical for the mainstream, the mainstream is a lot more radical than the media thinks it is.
Even if his platform is too radical for a lot of people, he will get votes based solely on integrity and consistency -- people are always attracted to those qualities, even if they disagree on some issues.
Since he was already polling at 3% when Forbes found out that less than 10% of the population even knew who he was, consider his upside once 70 or 80% find out about him.
strippers of course.
i will be doubling my donation this coming quarter.
I think adding the dimension of laughing or smiling or openly rooting for the Yankees is a quality that Ron Paul lacks
If he roots for the Yankees, he loses my vote.
Bee: Must be a Red Sox fan!
My god, why quote Allahpundit? And CATO is libertarian? ha! HA! joke of the day.
I hate to beat a dead horse, but New Yorkers out there should know that in order to vote for Ron Paul in the New York primary, you MUST be registered as a Republican by OCTOBER 12TH
I just put in my app to be a Republican, and if I can do it, anyone can...
The Cato Institute most certainly is libertarian. Unless by libertarian one means anarcho-cryptic-fascist or something.
Two points:
Stephanopoulos has, by far, the best Sunday morning show.
Does RP have enough by now to hire Rove? I heard he's available.
Does RP have enough by now to hire Rove? I heard he's available.
Ahhhh!!!!
I feel like I just woke up from a nightmare... With zombie squirrels...
Does RP have enough by now to hire Rove?
Hell NO! RP is just doing fine with his current staff.
I'm down with RP and all that...but I wonder if this is how all the Deaniacs felt during the early stages?
Rudy Can't Fail
"The Cato Institute most certainly is libertarian."
Gotta agree. They are like Ron Paul imo, agree or disagree with them (and I think most long time posters here know that MNG will disagree with a lot of what they say), they are really consistent, and that is saying something in this day and age. Cato is THE libertarian think tank.
I just doubled my donation and challenge all of you to do the same (if youre still under the limit). If you have never donated before, start off with $100.00 ... it really feels good! 🙂
[em]I hate to beat a dead horse, but New Yorkers out there should know that in order to vote for Ron Paul in the New York primary, you MUST be registered as a Republican by OCTOBER 12TH[/em]
that's only if you are already registered with another party
if you are not currently registered with a party, you have until Jan 6 2008 to register to vote in the party primary
http://www.ronpaul2008.com/primary-and-caucus-information/
You know, an interesting side effect of the Paul campaign may be a relatively high number of people registering GOP to vote for him in the primaries. As much as anything, that might help restore the libertarian wing to some degree. Not that I expect the GOP to amend its wayward lifestyle, but a surge connected to a libertarian candidate would certainly open some eyes.
I'm down with RP and all that...but I wonder if this is how all the Deaniacs felt during the early stages?
May be, but remember that regardless of the outcome, the cause is advanced. RP has certainly left a mark.
You know, an interesting side effect of the Paul campaign may be a relatively high number of people registering GOP to vote for him in the primaries.
I know I am not alone when I say that I will not be registered GOP for very long after the primary.
I'm already not looking forward to the Pat Robertson-esque junk mail I will receive after the switch...
Taktix?,
I'm not suggesting everyone embrace the GOP, but even a small number of "converts" could have a dramatic effect. I'm pretty sure the status quo won't hold, only because the sorta unity after 9/11 is breaking down. Neither major party is going to give us much more than rhetoric, at best, of course. Except for a few principled people like Ron Paul.
What America needs, what would be healthy for America, I think is a strong third party or two. The dynamics would be quite interesting. Look at Canada, even a smaller third party like the NDP or the Bloc Quebecois (which is only a major party in Quebec) usually are able to keep the two big parties (the Liberal Party and the Conservative Party) in check. Last time over, the NDP (only popular in the Canadian mid-West) was the reason that the Liberals lost their government.
Please, Ron Paul should be a Lions fan. No one expects anything of them, but they're looking a lot stronger than anyone predicted.
let 2008 be known as the year the unwashed masses made off with the Republican party
democracy's a bitch
and she's in heat again
I think it's about time that I say something about Ron Paul: I like him. There. I said it and I would say it again if I had to.
All right, no more bitching about the mainstream media ignoring your candidate.
You now get to graduate to bitching about the mainstream media being mean to your candidate.
Congratulations.
Ron Paul seems to be doubling his support every quarter. That will not be fast enough to win the Republican nomination, given how early the primary season wraps up this cycle.
However, if Hillary gets the Democratic nomination and Generic Neocon gets the Republican nomination, you'll have two candidates who support the war, while the vast majority of the American people do not.
Where are they gonna go?
I think a third party run by Ron Paul has a good chance of winning.
You now get to graduate to bitching about the mainstream media being mean to your candidate.
Not yet, but it's probably coming. On the Today Show (flipping channels, saw they had a piece on the candidates) they mentioned Paul. Tim Russert said something about how Paul had gotten the "libertarian wing of the Republican party motivated" or something like that. Then he pointed out the $5MM was pretty much the same as "major candidate" McCain got.
Joe Schembrie:
The Right says: "Elect the republican that would defeat Hillary (regardless of whether he is a true conservative or not)."
The Left says: "Elect the democrat that would defeat Rudy/Romney (regardless of whether he is a true progressive or not)."
Outcome: exactly what Joe Schembrie says. It is a race to the bottom. At the end, the US gets a totalitarian, big-government, pro-war government. A RP third party will not be able to overcome the overwhelming populism prevailing today. It was a wise decision by RP to say no to a third party run.
The Dean comparison is quite apt: yeah, he lost the primary, but who's had more influence on the American political scene, Howard Dean or John Kerry?
Does the Democratic Congressional majority talk more like Howard Dean, or like Dick Gephardt these days?
Howard Dean has altered the politics in this country more than anyone since Bill Clinton. Way more than Bush. Way more than Rove. They thought they were doing something that would last, but it isn't. What Howard Dean accomplished, leading a whole party that was floundering around getting its ass kicked in the direction it took to capture both houses of Congress and become the prohibitive favorite to win the White House - Ron Paul should hope and pray his campaign will have an influence comparable to Howard Dean's.
And it already is. There's more a presidential candidate can accomplish then just winning office. You listen to how much applause there is at Republican debates when Ron Paul talks about ending the war - the other candidates cannot ignore the reaction his message is getting from their own diehard partisans.
All the way over the pacific on the Big Island there are signs and meet ups.For the first time I am excited about a candidate.
But we all need to help with this OCT 12 registration deadline in NH.
I am having trouble sleeping, worrying about another fixed election. I was on the computer and phones at 4am today with NH senators and attorneys. IS THERE ANYTHING WE CAN DO?
Aloha to all of the Ron Paul Nation
What happens to the money the losers have left over?
One more reprise of my fave Warty quote:
Ron Paul needs to stop infecting me with his horrible, horrible optimism.
BTW, Dave Weigel, thanks for posting this stuff today. Gave me a little bit of lift at the end of a day when a client had to part with a big chunk of long green to Uncle Sugar (I done all I could, Thelma, but sometimes, you just gotta pay--good and hard).
And guess what, nobody else's taxes went down on account of it neither.
And it was spent before I got Warty's name typed.
Big Sigh.
Now, Pass That Bottle To ME!
"What happens to the money the losers have left over?"
This rarely happens. If you are running your campaign properly, you are usually running at a 110 to 125% cash on burn rate. More often you'll find former candidates shaking friends down to retire debt.
I don't think Ron Paul compares to Dean other than by getting disenfranchised voters excited. I thought Dean was interesting but not enough to open up my wallet. This time however, a libertarian getting headlines??? I have doubled my donation every quarter. The rest of you will have to pick it up since I will hit the limit soon. This is of course on top of all of the materials I have bought to make signs, hand out Liberty Cards, and most of all - my time.
Wow. Ron Paul Revolution is the truth.
God is with Ron Paul. He is God's righteous man. Check out my YOUTUBE video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a58U9xVzGUU
THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE!
RON PAUL 2008!!!
The Truth is......if Ron Paul Loses the nomination, the Revolution is not going to go down quietly and take this shit from the neo-cons. There will be hoards and masses of supporters who will vote for him if he is the 3rd party Libertarian Candidate and Washington D.C. will be in shambles after a huge riot.
Riots and protests will break out everywhere. America will be under serious shit. I'd hate to see the winner of the Presidency, if it is not Paul, go down the way Slobodan Milo?evi? did when the people of Yugolslavia got pissed off and beat his ass out of office.....
I was eating dinner outside a restaurant, and my dog started eating a piece of paper in a plant pot. It was a Ron Paul flier! I can't get away from this guy!
I hope your dog dies, Fred.
What? Your dog was eating the papers he found around a pot plant?
Okay Asian Dude, I watched the entire video, which was nicely done. Gotta love Ron Paul, but you know, Don Henley really didn't think much of Ronnie Rayguns (zap!).
Third party presidential candidates have a really large hurdle to overcome. Mostly, that the president is elected by a majority, not a plurality, of electoral votes. A third party candidate would need to beat the hell out of both the major party candidates, otherwise the decision goes to the US Congress.
Getting a majority in the electoral college as a third party candidate is even more unlikely than the GOP nomination, methinks.
Missing? Nah, he's out flying with Fossett.
If Ron Paul loses, rent a boat and come visit Atlantis.
Dondero shot his tiny wad when he sold out his principles and stabbed his friends in the back in exchange for a promise of cozying up to power and a few crumbs of privilege. But he bet on the wrong horse, and now he's in hiding. He's done.
George Hypo needs to wake up and smell the Revolution. Because Ron Paul is the one to bring our counrty Hope.
Dean's only difference from the other dems was his anti war stance, if I remember correctly.
RP's got a lot more differences between him and the "top tier". We'll see if that's good or bad, but I gave him $50 last quarter and this weekend he's getting a hundred.
True enough, Ira, but think back to late 2003.
"Only" his anti-war stance? Oh, is that all?
Dondero shot his tiny wad when he sold out his principles and stabbed his friends in the back in exchange for a promise of cozying up to power and a few crumbs of privilege. But he bet on the wrong horse, and now he's in hiding. He's done.
So there was a time when Dondero wasn't a blithering idiot? I must not have been reading H&R long enough. When was that?
Long before he showed up at HnR Taktix. At one time he was on RON PAUL's staff. Here's what RON PAUL had to say about him in a Reason interview.
Reason: Your former staffer Eric Dondero is challenging you for your House seat in 2008.
Paul: He's a disgruntled former employee who was fired.
Donderoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
I am a 42 year old lifetime republican. I am absolutely disgusted with the course the GOP has chartered. OUT OF CONTROL spending, how many trillions is it now? Passing laws(patriot act) that intrude upon my personal life. Going to war with a country that has absolutely nothing to do with al-queada( of course they are there in droves now due to our faulty foreign policy). Decades of looking the other way with illegal immigration because corporations and small companies love the cheap labor.
I have voted in every election(presidential and non) for 20 years. I have consistently voted republican(even in 2006...one I will regret forever).
Over those 20 years I have always had to vote for the lessor of two evils. I now realize that there was no lessor.
Thank You Dr. Ron Paul for giving me hope again, for casting my apathy aside and igniting my passion for this great country of ours.
What an amazing document the US Constitution is, may we see days ahead where people will once again embrace the ideas which made this country so unique in Mankinds long storied history.
What an amazing document the US Constitution is
Yeah, amazing for how impotent it is that we ended up in this situation in the first place: a country in which the second amendment protects the government's right to own military weapons (???) and in which the first amendment protection on speech doesn't apply to political speech that costs more than you can personally spend to broadcast.
Keep dreaming, constitution-lovers. Your devotion to that document keeps you in chains in the vain hope that it might mean something someday.
The Asian Ambassador,
I like your video, but I don't like your choice of Bible verse.
Ezekiel 25:17 - "And I will execute great vengeance upon them, rebuking them in fury: and they shall know that I am the Lord, when I shall lay my vengeance upon them." (Douay-Rheims)
(To put this in terms the average H&R poster can understand, this is the verse the guy in Pulp Fiction recites before blowing people away.)
This may be an appropriate quotation for Rudary Clintiani, but not for Dr. Paul.
For Dr. Paul, I would suggest some different verses. How about Proverbs 22:28: "Pass not beyond the ancient bounds which thy fathers have set."
Let's just say it wasn't always obvious he was a blithering idiot.
A little late, but apparently, yes it's true, Doneroo is MIA south of the border and has been for about a week. Whatever you think of him, that's a real bummer.
That's Donederoooo.
Yes, I saw where Mainstream Libertarian reworded its statement about Eric so that it was clear it wasn't a joke. The first statement had a headline that looked like a bad joke with no punchline.
He and I may be political adversaries now, but I'd hate to think anything bad has happened to him.
