Girl School's Out in Afghanistan
From feminist wire and Ms. magazine comes this disturbing report:
A teacher from Afghanistan was murdered recently for disobeying Taliban orders to stop educating girls. Mohammed Halim, a 46 year-old man from Ghazni, was taken from his home and partly disemboweled before his limbs were tied to motorcycles and torn off, according to the New Zealand Herald. Halim is the fourth teacher to be murdered by Taliban extremists in Ghazni, a center of violence among the Taliban, US, and Afghan militaries, reports The Independent.
The number of attacks on students, teachers, and girls' schools have risen dramatically this year, with 108 assaults occurring between January and June, reports the New Zealand Herald. Many educators are still under attack, receiving warnings to stop teaching girls. Fatima Mustaq, the director of education in Ghazni, says she has received many death threats, due to her gender and her unwillingness to stop educating girls, The Independent reports. "I think they killed him that way to frighten us, otherwise why make a man suffer so much?" said Mustaq, according to The Independent.
And there's this:
Today [in Afghanistan]…girls' schools are under attack. The United Nations estimates that every single day a girls' school in Afghanistan is burned down or a female teacher killed. In four southern provinces, more than 100,000 children are being denied an education because of school closures.

The chimp did a great job, didn't he, boys and girls? And now he and his minions want to 'surge' in Iraq. My mind shudders at the thoughts of modern democracy he will bring there too.
Chimpeach! NOW!
Jack Alexander, had we not gone into Afghanistan, just how much better would it be now?
Tool.
Take it elsewhere, had we not gone into Iraq, just how much better would Afghanistan be now?
Tool.
Chimpeach! NOW!
Because President Cheney will fix everything.
Tool.
yes, it's all bush's fault. before him, the taliban dictators were in the process of implementing title 9 rules.
Interesting to see that the Left is consistant in their support of leaving the thugs alone so that they can go about their business.
Educators of girls out of Afghanistan. NOW!
I think Loundry's head may explode after reading this article.
"Progressives... criticizing... non-westerners for their practices?!? *KABLAM!* "
Maybe we would have had a better chance of stabilizing Afghanistan if we weren't wasting time and energy on our useless war in Iraq.
Not just progressives. Feminist progressives.
"The chimp did a great job, didn't he, boys and girls?"
Yeah, when I hear a story like this, the first thing I can think of is how to indict Bush.
Tool.
Andy,
You beat me to it!
You know, if we had put more troops in south-eastern Afghanistan before attacking Kabul, we could have mopped up the fleeing Taliban rather than chasing them and failing to catch up before they reached Pakistan.
And if we legalized opium, we could bring a big part of the Afghan economy out of the black market and further undermine warlords, gangsters, and various other thugs.
Or, maybe this is a problem in virtually the entire Muslim world? (Somalia? Yemen? Egypt? Iran? Syria? and parts of Iraq?).
Perhaps the real problem is that we stopped at just Iraq and Afghanistan.
When will my fellow Libertarians wake up and realize, this is a Global War to protect our civil liberties and the spirit of tolerance, Against the Islamo-Fascist oppresors. The Islamo-Fascists are everywhere. Not just in parts of Afghanistan. And if we don't act quick to stem the tide, they'll be on the banks of the Rio Grande in a few years.
Oh wait, they're already here: Crazed Muslim man guns down 6 women at Seattle Jewish Community Center, Beltway Sniper John MUHAMMED kills 14 in Maryland, Virginia, Arizona and Alabama, Crazed Muslim man drives SUV into crowd at UNC injuring 8 students yelling "Allah-Ahkbar."
Eric Dondero, you might be happier posting comments on Lonewacko's blog.
thoreau,
this larger presence also would have run the risk of having us percieved more like the Soviets by the locals than we already were. If that happened, the dire predictions of a repeat of the Soviet experience may have come to pass. The loss of life on both sides as well as those caught in the middle would have been much greater than what is currently going on.
On the second point, I concur. Afghani opium tea would not only sell like hotcakes, but go great with them too.
Yes, Eric, that crazy man in Seattle reflects upon ALL Muslims, just as the murderous Marines in Haditha reflect upon ALL Americans. In other words, not at all.
Hold it Joe,
Weren't you telling me not two weeks ago that the Taliban really are not a threat to anything and need to be made a part of the Afghan government? These people are savages. There is no negotiating with or appeasing them. Unfortuneately, as Dondero points out, they are not just in Afghanistan. They are all over the world. Unfortunately, most Reasonites are more concerned that the CIA might be listening to their phone calls than about the large number of people bent on killing them.
"Perhaps the real problem is that we stopped at just Iraq and Afghanistan."
dude, mainstream libertarianism is great! i get to stay up as late as i want, eat all the ice cream i can stomach and fantasize about conquering the world!
actually, i apologize if you were kidding; and touche, for it was a subtle and deft touch.
if you're not kidding, well, just spark that shit and pass it, son.
"Unfortunately, most Reasonites are more concerned that the CIA might be listening to their phone calls than about the large number of people bent on killing them."
well, yeah. the chances of the american government fucking with me is far larger than some islamist fucknut. and i live in nyc.
furthermore, there are structural issues; this whole "we must become evil to destroy evil" thing is super lame.
thoreau's right, the only thing we can do at this point is legalize the opium trade. Anything less, ensures either anarchy or corruption.
"well, yeah. the chances of the american government fucking with me is far larger than some islamist fucknut. and i live in nyc."
If you are talking about the local cops or you nutcase mayor, you are absolutely right. If you are talking about the NSC or any number of other things the REasonites get their panties in a twist over, you are nutjob who needs to be wearing a tinfoil hate to protect you from the CIA listening to your thoughts.
"furthermore, there are structural issues; this whole "we must become evil to destroy evil" thing is super lame."
What structural issues? WTF does that mean? You either have the balls to defend yourself or you don't. We burned several million people to deat the defeat the Nazis and the Japanese. That is a hell of a lot more evil than anything we have done in this war. Evil or not, I will still take a world without Japanese and German militarism.
You either have the balls to defend yourself or you don't.
The "we were simply defending ourselves" argument doesn't work with Iraq, and if we weren't bogged down in Iraq we could focus our military on Afghanistan, which is currently a mess which we can't do anything about because our military is bogged down elsewhere.
No, John, I wasn't telling you anything remotely comparable to the idea that we need to appease the Taliban. You just don't have a whole lot of firepower above your eyebrows, and misunderstood the point I was making.
Three years after Abu Ghraib, John still hasn't the foggiest idea what Jennifer's comment could possibly mean.
"...the NSC or any number of other things the REasonites get their panties in a twist over, you are nutjob who needs to be wearing a tinfoil hate to protect you from the CIA listening to your thoughts."
"You either have the balls to defend yourself or you don't."
Yeee haww!
I wonder if any Iraqis have ever used that "self-defense" line.
Unfortunately, most Reasonites are more concerned that the CIA might be listening to their phone calls than about the large number of people bent on killing them.
I am only worried about them sharing links to the great free pr0n that I find before I get to share the links with my friends. Otherwise, listen away.
"Military Lawyer"! He's got ballz. Vee like ballz.
He's just grumpy because mommy took his JAG costume away until he finishes his matzo ball soup.
It's too bad that he's not involved in the service: they recovered got the stain out of Monica's dress. Too bad they couldn't do that to his parents' sheets. The best part of him got left there.
What a fuckin' doofus. He is now first suspect in the "Who is the Secret Love Child of Dave W and Juanita?" board game (enhanced DVD version).
this has got to be the dumbest HandR discussion thread of 2007 so far, hopefuly not a sign of things to come
"What structural issues? WTF does that mean?"
ok, john, let me reframe this for you so it makes sense:
remember oklahoma city? remember the anti-terrorism and effective death penalty act? remember clinton's attempts to expand wiretapping powers? remember how gun toting evil militia right wing christian types were going to take over america?
yeah, so do i.
clinton helped lay down the bricks for the patriot act. the next attack, presuming there is one, will follow in the patriot act's pathway to even more dire consequences. maybe i am a nutbag, but i have history on my side, not paranoia.
"You either have the balls to defend yourself or you don't."
that's what hezbollah said!
Yeah dude, Girlschool totally kicked ass back in the day!
...Wait, what are we talking about again?
"And if we legalized opium, we could bring a big part of the Afghan economy out of the black market and further undermine warlords, gangsters, and various other thugs."
i wonder what the fallout from that would be.
dhex,
Cheap opiates leading to peaceful professional drug retailers instead of violet, murderous drug-thugs, selling to peaceful non-threatening addicts instead of criminal theives and muggerstrying to feed a nasty habit?
Sounds like a good trade to me.
er, violet should be violent.
'course they COULD be violet, but only in the Village or San Francisco.

i'm completely on board, mind you, i just wonder what would happen. i presume the warlords would become overt rather than covert landlords to poppy growers; furthermore, there's the issue of what happens when the stuff is finally grown and moved, as realistically this would be coupled with more "tuff on drugs" type approaches from the u.s. and western countries. it's not like they're not going to keep growing poppies in afghanistan, but if they can't legally move them anywhere...etc etc and so forth.
Just to be fair, can anyone here seriously imagine Congress and the American people going along with an administration suggestion to fully legalize opiates in 2001? I mean, please.
Instead of all the sniping and digression, shouldn't we at least mention that maybe we can do something positive about the situation? After all, the whole point is that there's a need for helping these girls in Afghanistan. Check out things like the Afghan Girls Fund (http://www.nationalgeographic.com/donate/afghan_girls_fund.html) and other similar orgs.
