Today in Supreme Court History: February 1, 1816
2/1/1816: Second Bank of the United States chartered. The Supreme Court would uphold the constitutionality of the Bank in McCulloch v. Maryland.

I have my doubts the opinion would have been unanimous if it was handed down today. It has language that is kinda non-originalist.
Madison and Hamilton, co-authors of the Federalist Papers, originally disagreed on the bank. Madison later consented to it because over time it was widely accepted.
The Reconstruction Republicans cited this opinion to argue for a wide power in application of the 13-15th amendments, especially to determine "appropriate" legislation.
