Another entry regarding an also-ran in American history.
His appointee later resigned to join the Confederacy. Campbell has a significant legal career after the Civil War, including arguing the losing side in the Slaughterhouse Cases.
Pierce was friends with Nathaniel Hawthorne, who wrote a glowing campaign biography about him. FP was a compromise choice. He had earlier supported Justice Levi Woodbury, who then died. (The two things are probably not related.)
The Forgotten Presidents: Their Untold Constitutional Legacy by Michael Gerhardt (better known for his impeachment book) has a chapter about Franklin Pierce. Forgotten presidents, as much as forgotten justices, provide some interesting insights and historical narratives.
A popular current series about the assassination of James Garfield features an interesting portrayal of another president, Chester A. Arthur. He died on November 18, 1886.
There have been two times in American history that five ex-presidents were alive.
1861-62: Martin Van Buren, John Tyler, Millard Fillmore, Franklin Pierce, James Buchanan.
1993-94: Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H W Bush.
Reagan and Ford survived the Clinton presidency.
Clinton can replace Nixon to make five.
Also, Jan 20 2025-Present: Clinton, George W. Bush, Obama, Trump*, Biden
* While currently president, one could argue he also qualifies as a former president
Or this date last year.
Carter, Clinton, Bush, Obama, and Trump.
We are really stretching the relation to Supreme Court History in these little blurbs.

Checking, people have been complaining about this entry as early as 2019. Our previous documentarian's entry is here:
