The Revolt of the Canadian Truckers
In an age of elite scorn, government mandates, a rotten economy—and powerful, decentralized communication tools—common people are pushing back.
HD DownloadCanada's "Freedom Convoy" started three weeks ago, with truckers converging on Ottawa to protest a law requiring that they be vaccinated to come back into their own country.
Given that well over 80 percent of the truckers are vaccinated, what exactly are they protesting? As one reporter who talked to dozens of demonstrators put it, it's less about mandates per se and more about "a sense that things will never go back to normal, a sense that they are being ganged up on by the government, the media, Big Tech, Big Pharma."
Truckers complain about inflation and about being demonized as dumb and irrational. They feel underappreciated by elites who depend on them to literally deliver the goods but then tell them what to do without giving them any say in their own lives. One protester gave eloquent voice to populist resentment, saying, "There's a group in power that always manages to create panic among the masses and siphon off public funds."
The trucker protests remind me of the Tea Party in 2009, Occupy Wall Street in 2011, the Women's March in 2017, and Black Lives Matter protests after the police killings of Michael Brown in 2014 and George Floyd in 2020. Whatever specific event ignited each of those movements, they all quickly took on greater proportions and expressed a vast, generalized anger not simply at overspending, bailouts, income inequality, sexism, and police brutality but at governments and cultural elites that seems at best indifferent to ordinary people's lives and at worst downright malevolent.
These movements typify what former CIA analyst and current visiting fellow at the Mercatus Center Martin Gurri wrote about in The Revolt of the Public and the Crisis of Authority in the New Millennium. Governments and elites have lost the trust and confidence of the people they supposedly serve. Social media and other forms of communications empower protest movements that are authentic, decentralized, and leaderless, at least at the beginning. Such protests are much better at articulating rage and anger at the status quo than they are at proposing anything like concrete proposals for reform. As a result, contemporary protest movements tend to fizzle out after making a big entrance.
That was certainly the case with the Tea Party, which started as a revolt against wild spending and bank bailouts during the financial crisis. The movement brought hundreds of thousands of protesters to the streets all over the country, including massive demonstrations in DC. It captured the libertarian imagination with its simple message of controlling government spending and holding businesses and individuals accountable for bad decisions. Capitalism is a system of profit and loss, Tea Party people stressed, pushing back against the idea of "privatizing profits and socializing losses" for giant firms like GM and neighbors who overbought when it came to housing.
The Tea Party got a handful of people elected to Congress in 2010 and 2012, including Sen. Rand Paul (R–Ky.), who is cheering on the Canadian truckers and even calling for an American version of the Freedom Convoy. But the Tea Party ultimately faded into insignificance and impotence, in large part because it mostly only channeled frustration and negativity. It was quickly absorbed into a Republican Party that failed at every step to reduce the size, scope, and spending of government.
The Canadian Freedom Convoy will likely suffer a similar fate—and its American counterpart may never even materialize. Some of the other recent protest movements have been more successful in pushing an agenda, but all have lost urgency and effectiveness as they became more centralized or enmeshed with partisan politics. Just like the heads of the governments they were protesting, some leaders of Black Lives Matter, the Women's March, and Time's Up abused their power, lost their moral authority, and damaged their causes.
But that doesn't mean new protest movements don't matter. Far from it.
Even if they don't succeed at achieving their stated goals, they are blows against the status quo whose cumulative force will make governments and elites become more accountable to the very people they ultimately rely on. As with the collapse of communism, eventually there comes a tipping point where the seemingly impossible becomes the inevitable.
In a country where arbitrary COVID policies still run rampant; trust and confidence in government, business, and organized religion continues to fall; inflation is at a 40-year high; and just 17 percent of us are satisfied with the way things are going, expect new movements to keep rising up.
As a society, we're like the Marlon Brando character Johnny Strabler in The Wild One. "Hey Johnny," a woman asks him, "what are you rebelling against?" His laconic, iconic response: "Whaddya got?" We may not know the best way forward exactly but that won't stop us from pushing into the future.

Such protests are much better at articulating rage and anger at the status quo than they are at proposing anything like concrete proposals for reform.
Of course, if you've been paying attention, there's a very clearly stated proposal here with a specific grievance. Repeal the mandates. The mandates are what is making them mad, and repealing the mandate is what makes this go away. It's different than the BLM crowd that just wants Marxism in response to media manipulation, or even the Tea Party that wants reduced government spending but can't sustain the political momentum necessary to see it happen.
This is the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Peaceful crowds, clear policy requests, and Trudeau is George Wallace.
When did reason fall into the idiocy of believing you have to replace policy with more policy?
June 2015
No that was just the moment when their serial dishonesty became impossible to hide.
I don't care who you are... watching retards who got jabbed slowly realize they are going to die soon as a result of immune system failure is funny!!!
Been driving me nuts for years.
I still remember "Republicans need to replace Obamacare before they repeal it."
WHY? Why the hell do they need to replace a bad law? NO law is the best option.
Remember how tax cuts were “anti- libertarian”?
Tech has rendered a lot of these old debates moot. Today, if you have a condition and insurance kicks you off, a gofundme is just a few clicks away and easily shared on Facebook.
Unless they decide to unperson you.
Seems like a bad choice to mention GoFundMe in a piece on Canadian truckers.
the Tea Party that wants reduced government spending
The problem with the Tea Party is that they wanted reduced spending but would not advocate SPECIFIC spending cuts in the areas big enough to make a difference: Social Security, Medicare, and the military. You can't significantly reduce spending if those 600-pound gorillas are off the table.
I will grant social security, but the defense budget is dwarfed by entitlements. To be an enlightened Libertarian, I’d expect better knowledge of our budget.
Pulling back on our foothold in foreign entanglements and ending Afghanistan should be enough lowering of defense. But to strip our military when our technology is already flagging is just dumb.
Was about to reply w the same.
Additionally, national defense is a legitimate function of government. If we stripped down everything I think the government shouldn't be doing, it would still have a military. I don't think the government is meant to serve as the social safety net, that's the domain of private entities.
But the military also shouldn't be a jobs program or a way for Senators to bring home the bacon. There is plenty to be cut there. And the constitution says there shouldn't be a standing army, so that is not a legitimate function of the US government.
There are ways to cut military spending without hurting our readiness, in fact probably increasing our readiness. Stop the political indoctrination (this is something the CCP, NK and Russians do, spend huge amounts of their budget on political indoctrination, we aren't there yet but we do spend an awful lot of money on EO training and CRT training and have for decades, it was a problem back in the 1990s when I first got in). Remove regulations that not only promote waste, but basically force waste. Revamp R&D, currently Congress treats R&D as a earmark slush fund, wasting billions of dollars on unnecessary and or wasteful R&D, that leads to massive cost overruns, mostly on projects that the military doesn't want or need. They also extend the R&D phase of programs needed. The P-51 went from drawing board to Frontline fighter in 4 years. The F-22 took 20 years from first flight, to service. The F-86 took 4 years from drawing board till it was dominating the skies over Korea. It doesn't need to be perfect, it needs to work. Perfection is best achieved once it becomes operational. Even the last generation of fighters and tanks took far less time to reach operational status. And then we kept improving them as time progressed. The M1 was updated to the M1A1, then the A2 etc. Additionally, almost all these upgrades didn't require full remanufacturing but could be implemented on existing platforms. Also, trying to replace 6 different weapons platforms, across three different branches with a single platform, always is a recipe for disaster (see F-35 and cost overruns). The F-22 could easily have began replacing the F-15C in the late 1990s, for a fraction of the cost. As it is, the F-22 became so expensive because of delays that it didn't replace the F-15C, and a good portion of the USAF budget is now spent on refurbishing legacy airframes that are well past their designed lifespan. The Army and Marine Corps has wanted to replace the M-16 platform since the 1990s but all projects get to a certain point, hundreds of millions of dollars spent and then Congress cuts the project before it can be fielded. So our troops are now carrying M4s, another M16 platform, that has numerous problems. The M-16 platform is 1950s technology. Gun design has moved a lot in the last seven decades. Currently, the Army is once again testing new platforms, looks like the Sig-Sauer entries are ahead, but there is already political pushbacks because some in Congress don't like awarding Sig-Sauer with another big contract after the DoD gave Sig-Sauer the contract for the M17 pistol. Who the fuck cares? If it is the best rifle, then it should be adopted. One of the biggest arguments for it, is that ergonomically it is very similar to the M-16 platform, but far more reliable, integrating new designs in it's gas operating system that cuts down on jams and requires less maintenance. This would require less retraining of soldiers to a new platform. It also has an ambidextrous selector switch and magazine eject, which has always been a problem for left handed shooters in the M-16, both of which are designed for right handed shooters. We'll see if the Army gets it's way. The USMC is waiting to see what happens, but given their recent history, it is likely they would adopt it if the Army does. Also, the 6.8 mm cartridge, using a 115 gr round, is far better than the 5.56 mm cartridge using the standard 77 gr round the US Army currently uses, having similar ballistics, with better terminal performance.
I believe just reforming the things I mentioned would cut spending by conservatory 10%, give soldiers more time in the field, and speed up the acquisition process for new weapons systems.
Not going to disagree, just note that it's a droop in the bucket compared to a "modest" reduction in entitlements spending.
Hell, I'd be satisfied if we simply ended baseline budgeting, and implemented actual 1% across the board cuts cumulative every year until we got to a break even point.
I think if we made it a unified narrative rather than an either or, we would be more successful. I think the first step should be a major push to reduce redundancy, waste and corruption in all federal programs. The amount of fraud that is acceptable in the welfare programs is simply mind boggling. You could get even some on the left to support a program targeted at ending fraud, corruption and redundancy. Why do we have so many armed federal police agencies? Couldn't we combine almost all of them under the Federal Marshal's office, and probably improve efficiency? Why does the BLM and USFS often have joint borders, or even overlapping borders, but belong to two different departments with different missions, and different SOPs? We could combine these into a single department, (I would throw the USFWS and EPA into the mix as well, take away their policing powers, and if they have to police something, the apply for a warrant that is served by the Federal Marshals) with a unified mission. It is more realistic than abolishing them all together. You could cut out a lot of the middle and top by combining agencies with similar missions. You also would improve efficiency, cut down drastically on the size of the government and make them more responsive. No longer would a land owner or even an environmental group have to get permits from three or four agencies, but from a single agency. A single agency that doesn't have policing powers but has to instead go through the courts to obtain warrants and then have the Constitutionally directed department created to enforce federal court directives.
You really don't think we're at China/NK/Russia levels of political indoctrination???
Ok..........
I said the exact opposite. I said we weren't there yet but we spend an awful lot of money and training time on political indoctrination.
"...we aren't there yet but we do spend an awful lot of money on EO training and CRT training and have for decades, it was a problem back in the 1990s when I first got in". Did you bother to read before your knee jerk reaction?
You said we weren't there yet, but it's been going on 30+ years.
Aren't we at the ideological purging stage?
We definitely need to purge the Marxists. Unless we don’t want to survive.
Totally aside, the M-16 was definitely deigned by someone who hated soldiers.
Isn't the Army unconstitutional if there isn't a war going on? Is that why we always have wars going on?
Not if it re-authorized every year, which is why it is done that way.
That sounds like a load of shit to me. It's still always there. It's a standing army.
It's the legal fig-leaf.
Reason supports the tyranny, repression and violence of the Trudeau government. They are making excuse again.
By the way, I offer my sincere thanks to Nick who, unlike his colleague, somehow managed to avoid making this story about Trump. I don't know why other writers think Trump is particularly relevant and worth reminding people of when discussing this major story, but it's apparently really hard for journalists to not mention the Orange Man at every opportunity.
Seriously, thanks for this. You deserve kudos for doing the bare minimum.
"really hard for journalists to not mention the Orange Man at every opportunity"
Not just journalists. My favorite Reason commenter does the same thing.

It does get pretty silly. He's been out of office for over a year now. Pretty much no one who isn't a weirdo Trump follower or a TDS sufferer is bringing up Trump.

That way we all have fresh in our minds why that choice will always be worse than the ones we're currently complaining about. [they hope]
"common people are pushing back"
Exactly. And that's a major problem from a Koch / Reason libertarian POV.
Our philosophy is effectively the opposite of populism. We seek to improve the lives of the (check my math here) 10% of the 1% of the 1% of the 1% — the top 30 to 40 wealthiest Americans. Especially our benefactor Charles Koch.
Hopefully our allies in Big Tech and Big Finance can quash this revolt of the wretched underclass.
#InDefenseOfBillionaires
So like 10% represents 10^-1 and 1% represents 10^-2, so you are dividing by 10^-7 in total, so by a million. Dividing the american population by a million would, roughly, yield about 7.5 + 6i + x people, x being an element of my foreskin. However, also counting sheep and other livestock we would end up with a figure of about 330 to 360, I think.
Your math is therefore correct.
The trucker protests remind me of the Tea Party in 2009, Occupy Wall Street in 2011, the Women's March in 2017, and Black Lives Matter protests after the police killings of Michael Brown in 2014 and George Floyd in 2020.
The Trucker protest doesn't remind me at all of one of the above listed events.
"The trucker protests remind me of the Tea Party in 2009, Occupy Wall Street in 2011, the Women's March in 2017, and Black Lives Matter protests after the police killings of Michael Brown in 2014 and George Floyd in 2020. Whatever specific event ignited each of those movements, they all quickly took on greater proportions and expressed a vast, generalized anger"
In some of those cases, they seem to be having a hard time differentiating between elitists inflicting a media narrative on the American people over their objections and against their will with genuine, organic movements where the American people rose up in protest against the elite.
Who here ever believed that the American people wanted to defund the police?
Who here ever believed that the thugs and arsonists of Portland and Seattle were somehow representative of the American people?
I'd go for defunding the police as a tactic. It's a lockout. The police get no money until they shape up. Then we'd see who blinks first.
Judging from what we're seeing in cities that tried it, I'm guessing it's the defunders who would blink.
I can maybe give the Occupy Wall St, but it is nothing like blm or the women's march (wtf???)
I don't care who you are... watching retards who got jabbed slowly realize they are going to die soon as a result of immune system failure is funny!!!

It's amazing how close you can come to getting something right only to get so many things about it so wrong.
Trump's Truth social is supposed to launch on Monday, and the chances of people using it to organize trucker like protests is pretty close to 100%.
The reason there haven't been American protests like this organized on Facebook and Twitter is because the progressives that control 100% of our federal government wouldn't let Facebook and Twitter tolerate organized protests against it--even if Facebook and Twitter wanted to do so.
When average people are being demonized for protesting against the progressives, and the progressive government is fighting to shut down Trump's privately owned social media app for tolerating "misinformation" and "insurrection", it'll be interesting to see how the journalists around here react.
I'm rooting for you, Reason.
Interesting point. Truckers bypass modern mass communication with their radios. That’s still a thing with them, right? Chatter over the airwaves?
Last time I fired up my CB yeah, they were pretty chatty.
And at the same time, the last company I drove for had our own Viber channel on our phones. And plenty of truckers know about Signal and Telegram, too.
Libertarianism is not populism. Populism leads to mob rule, and mob rule can just as easily violate people's rights than an authoritarian government can. Does no one learn about the French Revolution in history class anymore? A mob deposes the corrupt French monarchy, leading to anarchy, terror in the street, and eventually Napoleon Bonaparte as the "savior" of the French people to save them from all the chaos. And we see what happened there. Also read on how the 1917 Russian Revolution started. It started as a populist revolt against the corrupt monarchy. Then the mob, after forcing the Tsar to abdicate, and easily swayed by demagogues like Lenin, handed over power to them. The rest is history.
The Founding Fathers knew very well of the dangers of mob rule, that's why they came up with such a convoluted anti-democratic system of governance in the first place. It is BY DESIGN that the will of the mob is thwarted. Because the mob is governed by passion and emotion, not by rational and logical argument.
Populism leads to mob rule.
Mob rule leads to anarchy and terror and civil war.
Anarchy and terror and civil war leads to an authoritarian strongman to "restore order".
And that is the end of liberal democracy.
So be very very careful what you wish for.
So be very very careful what you wish for.
Said the fat fuck pushing mandates for the last 2 years.
Then take it up with Tony. Although I didn't think he was fat.
Funny how you and sarc play this game.
You called everyone who said get vaccinated but no mandates anti vaxxers. Then you attacked everyone citing real world data on how masks didn't correlate to infection rates. Then you attack all non vaccine forms used to help against hospitalizations and death yelling who and cdc were the keepers of the truth despite how many times they were wrong.
Then after 20 posts laughing at your idiocy you'd at the end say "but no mandates" for cover of your earlier diatribes about how important it was for everyone to follow government dictates.
Such dishonest shits.
Sarcasmics his retarded cousin or something, that now and then brings Jeff a six-pack and listens to his rants.
"Populism leads to mob rule."
Exactly. We're seeing the disastrous results in Virginia, where we #LibertariansForCRTInPublicSchools / #RadicalIndividualistsForRacialCollectivism suffered a tremendous setback in the recent governor election.
#PopulismBad
#TopDownRuleByUnelectedExpertsGood
You always have the very best hash tags, OBL.

I would argue that populism does not automatically lead to mob rule. However, we know what Technocracy leads to, and at this point on the timeline of history, I'll take my chances with a more populist bent because right now, the populists are orders of magnitude more libertarian than the Technocrats invoking war measures acts, locking down bank accounts and suspending bills of human rights.
In all its forms, from left to right, populism is a reaction to elitism.
The reason three progressives just lost a school board election in San Francisco is because of their elitism. Those elitists shut the schools down, over the parents' objections, and refused to reopen them. Then they obsessed over renaming the schools, which was not an important issue to parents, and tried to make their elite schools so that kids were no longer admitted on merit--how hard they studied and how much their parents assisted them. All three of those elitists provoked a populist response with their elitism--but the 70% of San Francisco's voters who threw them to the curb were not right wing populists.
It's just a general rule--no matter which side you're on. Elitism provokes a populist response, and democracy--in its proper purview--is the alternative to populist responses on either side of the political spectrum. The reason the framers, in their wisdom, placed the power to declare wars, ratify treaties, make naturalization rules, increases taxes, and do spending with Congress is not just because you can't have a free society if the elite can inflict those policies on the people against their will. It's also because the elite cannot inflict those policies on the people (here in the U.S. or anywhere else in the world) without provoking a populist response.
"Populism refers to a range of political stances that emphasize the idea of "the people" and often juxtapose this group against "the elite."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Populism
If you don't want a populist response, watching out for what you wish for is beside the point. If you don't want a populist response, don't treat the opinions and desires of average people with contempt. That's how you get ants.
"Don't treat the opinions and desires of average people with contempt"
The opinions and desires of average people can be most accurately approximated through market forces--since market forces are nothing but people making choices.
Progressive contempt for markets is also contempt for the opinions of average people. This is another reason why progressives are America's most horrible people.
If you don't want a populist response, watching out for what you wish for is beside the point.
So you DO read my comments.
So needy.
It’s really a symptom of mental illness with these idiots and the mute button.
That's why sarcasmic has to remind everyone that their on it twice a week.
The reason three progressives just lost a school board election in San Francisco is because of their elitism.
Don't be absurd, Ken. Those folks were very clear that this was all the fault of all those Republicans in San Francisco.
...
No, I did not manage to type that with a straight face.
I would argue that populism does not automatically lead to mob rule.
It's many, many steps down the path to mob rule.
the populists are orders of magnitude more libertarian
I suppose that depends on what one means by 'libertarian'. I don't equate narcissism with libertarianism. I don't equate "I only get upset with violations of liberties when it affects ME" with principled libertarianism.
Well, it's pretty clear you're not a libertarian then, because that's what you keep doing.
lol whatever. The commonplace view of "libertarianism" around here is "the liberty to have MY lifestyle and MY viewpoint and MY beliefs regarded as normative and therefore beyond reproach or criticism, while reserving the right to declare the lifestyles, viewpoints, and beliefs of everyone else to be weird, wrong, subversive, anti-American, authoritarian, and tyrannical". That is Reason Commenter-Style Libertarianism. It is not based on a respect for liberty for its own sake. It is based only on a respect for liberty for those who are already considered worthy of it.
You started getting mocked heavily after your story of how you were at risk so needed others to protect you instead of losing weight on your own lol.
And thank you for this:
It is not based on a respect for liberty for its own sake. It is based only on a respect for liberty for those who are already considered worthy of it.
You absolute authoritarian shit. People can liberty only after they live up to your ideals. Fuck off shit weasel.
.. respect for liberty for those who are already considered worthy of it.
Fucking asshole.
Isn't it amazing.
Jeff's literally arguing for the opposite of libertarianism and insisting it is the true version. The sophistry is mind-blowing.
He has to know he's talking nonsense, but somehow he thinks people will fall for it.
Jeff's big-government, regulation heavy "libertarianism".
Cite?
If you're going to look at it as cockeyed as that, there's no point in discussing it with you.
Just meeting Lying Jeffy?
"The commonplace view of "libertarianism" around here is "the liberty to have MY lifestyle and MY viewpoint and MY beliefs regarded as normative and therefore beyond reproach or criticism"
Rejection of the individual. Literally CollectivistJeff.
Look who's talking.
Seriously, apply your rant to yourself and you'll be a lot close to the truth.
Taste the projection.
Well said. The left here & Canada is so obsessed with elitist hate & tone deaf, that they’re 4 for 4 in p_ss__g off key societal constituents: the military, police, parents and now truckers. The “Payback” is coming this November and these leftist wannabes will drown in a red tidal wave.
You’re so libertarian you expect this entire country to cripple itself economically and subject itself to authoritarian orders because you’re too lazy and weak to put down the fork and get some exercise.
Somebody told he/him populism = mob rule, as a talking point to bash Trump with, so now the low IQ totalitarian faggot trots it out every 5 seconds.
Sounds likely.
I'm all for mob rule. Elitists like Jeff use it as a synonym for public violence whereas it strictly means pure democracy.
Your entire this is deferring the the expertise and elitism of government workers including idiotic teachers. Lol.
Please tell us how the most published heart doctor in the US is bullshit because he appeared on Rogan again.
Please tell us how DMED isn't valid since it wasn't in a journal you prefer. Not even understanding the reach done with DMED is the same type of analysis you dodnt understand but linked to from Nature.
Youre a narcissistic idiot jeff.
Listened to Koonin on Rogan yesterday. Collectivist Jeffy would HATE him.
I prefer to call him ‘Pedo Jeffy’. Since he openly advocates for the right of foreigners who are sexual predators. Including pedophiles, to enter the US at will.
Populism is neither necessary nor sufficient for the mob to take over. One of the writings that led to the independence of the USA was a populist tract, "Common Sense", which also was an influence on the constitutions of some of the states and on the federal form of government. Its title embodies the idea that there is common sense in the common people.
"The Founding Fathers knew very well of the dangers of mob rule, that's why they came up with such a convoluted anti-democratic system of governance in the first place."
So now anti-democratic systems of government are good? Okay.
Jeff openly desires a ruling by what he considers the elite which always aligns with the left.
Just come out and say you don't believe in liberty. Libertarians believe in individual choice and individual rights. The opposite of what you state here. They do not believe in centralized planning to tell people what to do.
Youre a statist.
He's a "radical individualist" who argues for collectivism and submission to our govt betters at every turn.
Probably the furthest from a libertarian you could get.
Mostly Peaceful mobs are just peachy tho, amirite
It’s simple to understand, if the correct politics you have a right to protest. If you have the wrong politics you’ll be arrested.
“Does no one learn about the French Revolution in history class anymore?”
Does anyone remember when Lying Jeffy was defending CRT in schools and he said that he wasn’t taught about issues of race in this country’s history that everyone else was taught?
I remember his posting what he considers the definition of CRT and it was still racist trash.
Populism wasn’t the issue with the French Revolution. Populism drove the American Revolution, too.
What we had that they didn’t was a rich history in Anglican and Dutch constitutional government. The French had only ever had autocracy so they got more of it of a different brand. But constitutional governance is rooted in English history, morphed in the Americas, and birthed our own.
Further, the French Revolution was entirely rooted in class resentment and lead by people/ideologies which would become the basis of marxism.
You’re on the right track. Good explanation of the the difference. I do think though, that like the French Revolution, these leftist wannabes, in a sense, will “devour their own” because you can never be too far left (or off the rails) to justify these totalitarian power grabs and accompanying revisionist history attempt.
Most people don't want to have to take to the barricades. The ones who do end up going there do so because the government refuses to address their concerns. So overly authoritarian government is what stokes populism in the first place.
Oh, gee, populist political movements might lead to terrible outcomes. Like governments that say that unless you blindly obey their mandates, you're not allowed to put food on the table. Or governments that violently suppress peaceful protests. Or governments that steal peoples money if they dare to donate it to a cause they don't approve of.
How brain-dead does one have to be to condemn hypothetical tyranny that might be exercised by the protesters in the future when the government opposing them is engaged in actual tyranny right now.
Tyranny? Is this like the "Australian concentration camp" story?
So, you tell me. These protestors come into town and clog every road and make it impossible for the city residents to get around town. Even if the protestors don't physically damage any property, what is the proper libertarian response here? What is the proper, principled, correct libertarian response that is independent of the nature of the protestors and their grievances, or the nature of the government that is tasked with taking action to resolve the conflict? If you tell me 'IT'S TYRANNY TO REMOVE THE PROTESTORS BY FORCE' then I will grab a bunch of my friends and completely surround your property, making it impossible for you to leave. I won't damage one single blade of grass on your property but you will be a hostage to me and my friends. And I will wait and see how long it takes for you to call the police and have me and my friends physically removed by force.
Yes. Locking up healthy people for being unhealthy is a violation of rights you ignorant shit.
What an idiot.
I’d love for you and your “friends” to try it. Don’t worry, I won’t call the cops.
Look at Jeff pretend that it's not referring to the public square but somebody's yard.
Has Jeff ever debated in good faith? Because I can't recall an instance.
Holy shit, I didn’t believe soldiermedic, but here you are posting cover for actual no shit tyranny in a Western democracy.
I don’t usually save posts, but I’m never letting this one go.
Translation of Chemjeff's rant: "When the people demand individual liberties, that is populism. We all know that populism leads to authoritarianism. Therefore, to prevent authoritarianism, we can't give people their constitutionally guaranteed liberties!"
Good god you're stupid.
Populism leads to mob rule only when the elites refuse to listen. That is when you have violence. When the elites listen, populism can be used for change. So what do we have in Canada and the US? Elites ignoring the populists and as a result, you are creating a self perpetuating cycle. The more the elites try to silence populism the more likely violence will occur.
Sometimes you really do need to fight off the authoritarians and tyrants, though. It's not ideal, but there comes a time when it has to happen to avoid something much worse.
If I wasn’t a gay, Black man who is GOP Proud I might say that this article sounds like the musings of an old crank, but as I am a gay, Black man I applaud this article and think it spot on.
Do you know how other gay, Black men who are GOP proud refer to having to put on a mask when you go the grocery store? I’ll spell it out for you, ok? Here goes… F…A…S…C…I…S…T D…E…M…O…C…R…A…T T…Y…R…A…N…N…Y. That’s how we refer to it.
This gimmick is old.
Please go back to being the self-described "American Socia1ist" who brags about how rich he is, how enormous his house is, and how well his portfolio is doing under Biden. Oh, and submitting California and its high poverty rate as the ideal state.
I don’t know who you think I am, but I am not a socialist. As a gay, Black man in the GOP plenty of White guys pay me plenty. Why on Earth would I be a socialist?
No, my goal here is to imagine that Dear Leader has his dick in my ear (very jelly) while I Gish gallop like you do about the tyranny of the Biden administration towards Donald Trump [Hey, there’s only a 40% chance he’s a bonafide Russian asset. Good for you!]. I admit… I need work and don’t do it quite as well as you and Ken, but as I’ve stated tirelessly I’m new here so I’m working on it. Please be patient.
Furthermore, I am in no way a socialist, sir. Please stop referring to me like that or I’ll sue you like Sarah Palin sued the NYTimes. She’s rich now, right?
I'm disappointed in you TBH.
If you no longer wanted to play the role of "socia1ist who behaves like a stereotypical greedy 1980s Republican asshole" I guess I can respect that. But if you're trying a new routine, at least put in the effort not to refer to Drumpf as "Dear Leader" exactly like you did during the old routine. That's just lazy writing.
#DifferentCharactersShouldHaveDifferentVoices
Can you list the top ten ways the Biden administration has maligned Dear Leader. I’m putting together a segment on Infowars on how the gay, Black community is being sacrificed for the totalitarian proclivities of the woke Left and Marxist-Leninist Biden administration and need your help. They just won’t stop at me being gay and Black. No, they want me gay, Black non-binary on on a Democrat plantation. God!
ATTACK OF THE CLONES!
I don’t get it. Was this a sub-dom game that was played at the 2020 Republican convention? Because that thing was GAF. One minute it was a catholic priest and the next minute it was a Log Cabin Republican. Amazing!
You know why I’m an enthusiastic member of the GOP— other than the fact that it’s clearly the working man’s party now? It’s also that the Republican Party is simultaneously the party of Average Joes like Milo and Caitlin and it can be also so transgressive. I mean look at it. It has pedophiles and wackos, and morons, and white nationalists and black nationalists and conspiracy nutcases and anti-semites. Dare I say it and not get banned? It’s like a rainbow coalition of every walk of life.
Use your inside pronouns.

There is simply no possible way to lump Black Lives Matter into something like the Freedom Convoy. One need not even make any moral judgements about either and still see that.
BLM and its entire philosophy came from Academics and other intellectuals. It was a top-down movement. It came from academics such as Angela Davis, Kimberly Crenshaw, Bell Hooks, Richard Delgado etc. It was born out of a Marxist, racialist view of structural power. This is why the elite institutions fell all over themselves to support them. Where's the Freedom Convoy symbol when I log into Amazon or Netflix. Where are the corporations donating millions? Where are the outward displays of support from corporate institutions? Where are the police protecting a Freedom Convoy banner painted down Fifth Avenue? These are not just details. These are incredibly important markers of where a 'protest movement' comes from.
The freedom convoy (and the Tea Party) movements were complete surprises to the elite institutions, and as a result have been held in deep suspicion or outright contempt.
These are not even close to the same things.
After years of unflinching support, how corrupt do you have to be before Amazon finally drops you as a preferred charity?
But only temporarily. I'm sure this will all get resolved after a couple of friendly meetings with the "trained Marxists".
Think about this shit, Amazon has been giving god-knows how much to an organization for whom a central goal is to "destroy the nuclear family". Don't gaslight me with this 'the freedom convoy reminds me of BLM maaaan' shit.
Clinton's took over blm. Clean organization now.
I'm really enjoying the fact that rich white people are now in charge of BLM's money. "For their own good."
I like that fact that BLMs entire philosophy is based on old dead white men.
BLM and its entire philosophy came from Academics and other intellectuals. It was a top-down movement.
By your standard, what protest would NOT qualify as "top-down"? One can claim (and many do) that the Tea Party protests were "top-down", that came from conservative elites such as Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Koch Brothers, Fox News, AFP, etc. Why are they wrong?
Why, indeed.
Why, the resemblance is uncanny.
Oops. haha
But you are making my point for me. There were (pseudo-)intellectual elites like Glenn Beck and elite institutional support in the form of Koch Brothers and AFP supporting and undergirding what the Tea Party chapters were doing. By Diane's standard, then, why shouldn't the Tea Party protests be considered "top-down"?
When it comes to BLM, the *ideas* may have come from intellectual circles, but the protests and activists were not - they came from grassroots individuals, just like with the Tea Party, starting with the Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown incidents. They were the sparks that catalyzed the BLM movement, just like Santelli's rant catalyzed the Tea Party movement.
but the protests and activists were not - they came from grassroots individuals, just like with the Tea Party, starting with the Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown incidents
This is the point of contention: BLM has forever been led by professional left-wing activists espousing ideas regularly seen in the academic settings that produce them, both in its original incarnation and in its copycat affiliates. The TP wasn't originally created or led by conservative doppelgangers, but by angry normies, leading to a lot less cohesion, conformity, or influence, until it was eventually coopted by Conservative, Inc and its associated grifters.
Shorter: for the Tea Party, the grift came later. For BLM, it was the entire point.
Okay, got it. THEIR protest was insincere and inauthentic, but YOUR protest was sincere and genuine. Because you read minds and generalize. Whatevs.
What do you mean by they? The protesters were mostly sincere, but the leadership? Ehhhhh.... I don't think the woman fronting the movement, someone who attended a magnet high school on a social justice program before majoring in philosophy at a prestigious private college, needed much of a push.
It's also not my protest. No protest will ever be my protest, because protest is a fool's game.
You mistake media figures attaching themselves to an already established protest, to a movement that was formed by elites and which then used incidents to initiate protests and violence. Do you not see the difference. The one, the elites latched onto, after the fact, the other the elites initiated the actions before the fact.
Too confusing for him.
He really is quite dumb.
Rush and his ilk simply latched onto a movement that was already well underway. They didn't create it, they celebrated it and embraced it, at the same time the elites condemned it. If you don't want populist movements to be co-opted by illiberal thinking, maybe start by not dismissing them, demonizing them and trying to crush them. You and the elites are tying the noise they'll hang you with. Eventually, the anger becomes to much. And it is your attitude that feeds the anger.
"The freedom convoy (and the Tea Party) movements were complete surprises to the elite institutions, and as a result have been held in deep suspicion or outright contempt.
These are not even close to the same things."
Is Gillespie pretending he doesn't understand this? Or is he really that deep in the bubble now?
It's mind boggling.
Should be embarrassing as well, but we already know they have zero shame.
"The Tea Party got a handful of people elected to Congress in 2010 and 2012, including Sen. Rand Paul (R–Ky.), who is cheering on the Canadian truckers and even calling for an American version of the Freedom Convoy. But the Tea Party ultimately faded into insignificance and impotence, in large part because it mostly only channeled frustration and negativity. It was quickly absorbed into a Republican Party that failed at every step to reduce the size, scope, and spending of government."
In 2010, the Republicans handed the Democrats one of the worst midterm defeats in American history--since World War I (one) certainly. The Tea Party didn't get a handful elected to Congress--unless you consider the Democrats losing 63 seats a "handful". And the impact the Tea Party had on the Democrats wasn't their biggest contribution. The biggest victims of the Tea Party were the Bush Jr. era big spenders and warmongering neocons in the Republican establishment, who were beaten by Tea Party candidates in the primaries. The Tea Party all but completely purged the Republican party of big spending, warmongering neocons. Go ask John Boehner who the biggest victims of the Tea Party were--if you can find him. Go ask Liz Cheney!
The Tea Party cleared the way for Trump's popular agenda. He negotiated a withdrawal agreement with the Taliban to get us out of that forever war and pulled the fangs out of ObamaCare with deregulation. Trump even twisted Congress' arm to cut 772 billion from Medicaid--an objective so libertarian and capitalist, I still can't believe we came that close to accomplishing it.
https://www.cbo.gov/publication/52849
The effects of the Tea Party can still be felt today. The Republicans unanimously voted against the Democrats $1.9 trillion pandemic bill in March of 2021, and the only reason Manchin was able to defeat the $3.5 trillion+ Build Back Better bill was because the Democrats had to use budget reconciliation since the Republicans were unanimous in their opposition to that spending. Suffice it to say, just because Reason is unwilling to support the Republicans for unanimously opposing $5.4 trillion in new spending, doesn't mean the Republicans didn't unanimously oppose $5.4 trillion in spending. Should they have been more than unanimous in their opposition?
All of that is a legacy of the Tea Party.
You expect a marxist apologist like Nick to care? The list was a bunch of astroturf intersectional marxist rallies with no point or demands for increased liberty (if you exclude the liberty to rob or assault others and burn down your neighborhood) and the tea party to "both sides" the argument.
They can get back to me when the truckers have a body count approaching that of BLM.
1100 elected offices flipped R from 2010 to 2016.

ChemJeff upstream says much of what I've been saying but makes the wrong conclusions. Populism and it's anger does lead to violence but only because the elites refuse to listen to it. We've been on this precipice before with the labor unrest of the late 19th and early 20th century. The Republican elite unfortunately, who controlled the country at the time, tried to, along with the corporate benefactors, smash it. The Progressives of both parties embraced it and directed it. So, we ended up with nearly four decades of progressive era politics that we still are paying for. We need classical liberals to embrace the current populism or someone less liberal will embrace it and we won't like the consequences. Or even worse we will ignore it and try to crush it, and that is when we'll get violence. I'm glad to see Reason finally waking up to it, after five years of condemning populist anger. But one can't wonder if it may be a little to late.
This one from Jeff should be posted on every comment he makes.

lol whatever.
The unbelievable thoughts he has on liberty prove he was never libertarian.
The part before that bothered me more. He's condemning libertarianism and individualism and then claiming that their rejection is libertarianism and individualism.
He's a champion gaslighter, that's for certain.
There is a lot for the libertarian, the classical liberal, the free market capitalists to embrace in the current populists movement. Parent choice and control of education, the incestuous relationships between big corporations, big tech and the federal government, individual rights, healthcare freedom, fair trade (recognizing that in a global market, the actions of other governments impacts domestic production and GDP), energy, food and manufacturing security (these are huge national security issues).
Instead of doing stories on cheap Canadian lumber, or even in those stories, Reason could recognize the driving factor behind this cheap lumber is because of illiberal trade policies enacted by the Canadian government. Instead of decrying exclusively any program aimed at curbing China's illiberal trade policies, recognize them. And write about them other than to bash Trump and or Biden. Don't pretend that the issue is just cheap goods, but acknowledge why those goods are so cheap, and how it impacts American workers. And how it is now impacting supply chain issues and inflation.
The danger in not even acknowledging the problem, isn't that the problem goes away, but that the people will demand action that often isn't what we want. On trade it becomes protectionism. Reason and other supposed champions of free trade should admit that after 50 years, the idea that trade with China will lead to a more liberal China has failed, at least for now. We also need better analysis of so called free trade agreements, were to often it appears, that America gives up more than it gains.
On immigration, Reason and other immigration rights supporters need to stop conflating illegal immigration with legal immigration. In the end, this false equivalency just leads to less support for both types of immigration.
If you ignore the problem, you won't be happy with how people react. The first step is always admitting that there is a problem. Then you can offer solutions. But ignoring, or even worse demagoguery, doesn't make the problem go away, it just makes it fester more.
Can anyone explain to me why the Washington Post's twitter account hasn't been blocked because it produced a story based on hacked material?
I was assured links to hacked/doxxed material get you banned on twitter.
At least thats why Hunter Biden laptop stories were banned...hey wait a second...
You can't meet to vote on if there's an emergency because there's an emergency.
https://boriquagato.substack.com/
This is truly appalling. Shutting down debate on emergency powers, because of emergency powers. I'm not an expert in Canadian law, but based on the news stories I've read, which say debate must continue uninterrupted once it's begun, until there is a vote, this is illegal. Debate started yesterday in the House of Commons.
Trudeau just shut down Parliament with his emergency powers.
Parliament just needed a little fortification is all!
That's how emergency powers are used in the hands of totalitarians.
But I've been assured by All The Right People that these powers are NECESSARY, and will be totally LIMITED to just the convoy, and that the government will happily give up their newfound power to do whatever they want.
Seems crazy to believe the people who said two weeks to flatten the curve, but let's give it a shot!
"It's cute hearing the people who told us they would only lock us down for two weeks tell us they don't intend to use the really bad sections of the emergency powers they're giving themselves."
-Somewhere on Twitter
Wait, so, Trudeau is going full Palpatine here?
I AM THE PARLIAMENT!
It's shocking. How are people not uniting more against this idiot? If that doesn't start to happen, we're all fucked.

Exactly Nick, just like you, peaceful protesters in their trucks made me think of Burning Looting Marxists (BLM).
I, too, enjoy sacrificing my integrity on the altar of politcal equlibrianism. We need to argue both sides and put emphasis on common ground, whenever we can. Even if the common ground is so small that not a single foot would fit on it.
One organization wants to be unmuzzled and travel between provinces and work without submitting to an unwanted medical procedure as is their guarantee in the Canadian Charter of Human Rights. The other wants to destroy the nuclear family an reinstitute Negroes-only drinking fountains because Affinity Groups.
You didn't quite cover how disparate the spread is. One organization is demanding trillions in Reparations and free colleges based on skin color, while the leaders of that organization are sitting on $60 million in graft and buying themselves multiple mansions. None of that money is being funneled into communities or funding scholarships, it's instead spent entirely on political activism. They're demanding equity, which is a nonsensical political outcome.
What is the other group demanding? Repealing a regulation that wasn't pass through the legislative process. And what is their funding going for? Supporting the protestors. The leaders don't seem to be living in mansions, they're on the ground with the protestors and being arrested, and the funds that they can't even access were entirely slated toward funding the protestors themselves.
Americans always wanted to defund the police, and the arsonists of Portland were speaking for all of us.

By "journalist" I'm sure they mean independent journalists, or those not affiliated with Canadian state news outlets. Canadian state news outlets will be free to record their propaganda pieces.

Bonus: the cameraman had to move away from people discussing covid stats because he didn't want the video to get banned.
If this was BLM all of you assholes would be calling for their mass caging or worse.
If this was BLM everything would be on fire, and we would demand those responsible for the destruction be arrested. But keep lying and deflecting from the terrible optics of police moving in on obviously peaceful protest.
Is it worth actually engaging with Tony? There is clearly no "good faith" happening here.
Normally I have him blocked but I suffered a moment of weakness and couldn't let his BS slide. We don't debate for him, we debate for the people who are reading along.
The saying goes, "the only way for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing." You have my praise.
No. Tony is just a retarded asshole who comes here to shit up threads and screech like a howler monkey. He's never once in his life made a cogent argument or engaged in good faith.
Peaceful including blocking main arterial roadways in Ottawa, damaging the economy of both Canada and the US, not to mention defacing statues and making a mess. But that's just fine. There's some distinction. Also fine, I'm sure, storming the capitol, destroying windows and doors, and leaving shit and piss behind.
Your manufactured outrage over BLM fell apart on Jan. 6, and this convoy further seals your hypocrisy. But I'm not telling you anything you don't already know. It's not about being right, it's about having power so that you never have to be right about anything again.
Lockdowns mandated by the government did no economic damage.
There was a pandemic.
It’s over?
That's great news! They can drop all the mandates and restrictions and everyone can go home and get back to work.
Interestingly, even though mandates, testing, and masking requirements are coming down, for some reason many states remain in a state of emergency.
Did they do any good? Nope. So we did damage without stopping the pandemic. Wow. Worst of both worlds.
What did you do to help? Whine about every tiny inconvenience to yourself, real or imagined? Is that how you contributed?
Why does have to help with anything?
Take your creepy fascism somewhere else.
You certainly seem to expect the rest of us to listen to your airing of grievances, even if you can't articulate them, even if they're "The Jews want to control our bodily fluids."
Your Jew obsession definitely lines up with your fascist tendencies,
All hail the king of projection, here accusing others of projection. Is this metaprojection?
It is a microaggression. Like Jan 6
There is not a street fully blocked. They've even assisted all emergency vehicles getting through.
You know Tony, actual videos exist. You can try looking and learning instead of relying on left talking points.
I have no interest in defending an obvious right-wing op.
Lol. Live streamed videos are less trustworthy than government leftists.
You and Jeff are hilarious.
You have no interest in the truth.
You can scroll up for links. Reality is right there, waiting for you to open your eyes.
> [Tony] can try looking and learning instead of relying on left talking points.
Assumes facts not in evidence.
Tony, you retard, very few people here defended the riot of Jan. 6. The problem is that those involved are being treated as political prisoners, unlike most of the people who actually tried to burn down occupied buildings in BLM protests.
I thought BLM was largely not promoting good ideas, but they have a right to have rallys and make noise and annoy people just like the truckers do. Blocking roads, maybe not so great, but civil disobedience is a thing.
No, they're being treated as criminals. Maybe more of them should be treated as traitors, since they did violently attempt a coup against the United States and all.
Shut up faggot.
So should all the Floyd rioters be criminals, with members of CHAZ being tried for treason? Using your logic, that should be the case. Are you gonna be consistent or hold to a double standard again?
That does not follow logically even a little. BLM never attempted a coup against the United States. Any criminal acts happening in or around BLM protests were prosecuted. This is all perfectly consistent and predictable law and order, except for the fact that BLMers are roughed up by the cops way more than far-right mobs.
BLM ended up doing millions of dollars in damage to federal buildings:
https://www.newsweek.com/portland-protesters-damage-cost-federal-buildings-1566821
CHAZ also took over a police department, which was a federal building. Where is your declaration of treason on those individuals?
Both BLM and CHAZ had dangerous weapons. The Capitol rioters were unarmed. If the latter attempted to start a coup as you claim, then that was a piss-poor attempt.
And contrary to what you say, many BLM rioters got off easy, there was even fundraising to bail out some of its activities. Yet on the other hand, one woman lost her life and the government is still investigating the Capitol riot to this day. You are totally wrong in this regard.
Was that your attempt of justifying the double standard you hold? Pathetic, Tony.
Canada province lifts all Covid restrictions amid protests
https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20220208-canada-province-lifts-all-covid-restrictions-amid-protests
Where the heck is Canada province?
*reads article*
*it's Saskatchewan*
That's going to piss off Ontario because as far as they're concerned Canada begins and ends with them.
"damaging the economy of both Canada and the US"
Here's where Tony's Big Lie is, and he took it from Trudeau. Both Coutts and the Ambassador Bridge had other nearby crossings that were fully open for business.
At most it meant a twenty minute detour, but Tony wants to pretend that trade was completely blocked rather than slightly inconvenienced.
Pretending this is the equivalent of burning down businesses, looting stores and targeting passersby, further seals Tony's hypocrisy.
Yeah, black vandalism is bad, white vandalism is freedom.
"Pretending this is the equivalent of burning down businesses, looting stores and targeting passersby, further seals Tony's hypocrisy"
Bringing up the race card in an attempt to justify your double standard is pathetic. It doesn't matter who did it, the truckers (which are not all white, mind you) did NOTHING comparable to what BLM/Antifa (also not all black) did.
Wait. A. Minute.
Defacing statues? Is that bad now?
“….blocking main arterial roadways…..” OMG!!!!
Don’t be so fragile tony.
“The whole point of protesting is to make ppl uncomfortable.
Activists take that discomfort w/ the status quo & advocate for concrete policy changes. Popular support often starts small & grows.
To folks who complain protest demands make others uncomfortable... that’s the point.”—Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
Yeah, don't bother with Tony. He's a statist piece of shit, just regurgitating his talking points. Not worth the time.
OH no no no, let's keep going.
If this was BLM, you'd be demanding that those responsible for the destruction be arrested, AND those who are just milling about standing nearby ALSO be arrested for 'aiding and abetting', AND demanding that if local authorities don't do the job that the federal government should step in and do it for them, AND demanding that the funding sources for those activities be investigated by the state.
You would be the authoritarian dickwad that you claim Trudeau is being right now and you know it.
Why are you complaining? The truckers are getting arrested now, so you'll have plenty of video to jerk off to later.
What destruction?
What destruction?
What aiding and abetting?
You're so dishonest.
Yes, if the truckers were murdering black people execution style and burning the city of Ottawa, I wouldn't support it.
KIDS IN BOUNCY-CASTLES! WAR MEASURES ACT.
If this was BLM you'd paint 'FREEDOM CONVOY' down fifth avenue and Bloomberg would have an army of police officers protecting it from vandals.
Only your hypothetical hypocrisy matters. His doesn't. Narcissism is great that way.
If this was BLM, Amazon and Netflix would have entire 'Freedom Convoy Collection' sections in their streaming platforms.
Yes, I would like a list of trucker-owned businesses from Amazon. And also a list of trucker-made movies on Netflix, preferably ones with an all-trucker cast.
Convoy 24x7.
If this was BLM, the media, blue check marks and elites would be tweeting "Burn it all down".
If this was BLM, you'd be writing the mayor to give them material support and hand over the police precinct to them.
If this was BLM, you'd have already Gentrified the Movement with one of those retarded signs in your front lawn.
If this was BLM, you'd get a little heartfelt documentary about the history of the Freedom Convoy, complete with soulful techno music and it would be in Newsweek with profiles of queer-identifying truckers all over the screen.
BLM was one of the largest civil rights protests of all time.
Truckers are an astroturf right-wing op protesting hygiene.
My point was about you people turning on a dime depending on the politics and skin color of the protesters. I never cheered the burning of a Walgreens. I was against vandalism because I knew how easily it could be used to smear the entire movement.
But goose and gander, for I think Jan. 6 discredits you people for all time, even if you thought it was a little gross. In fairness, I thought you were discredited the moment Reagan started asking an astrologer for foreign policy decisions. But we also have the election of Donald fucking reality TV Trump, if you like.
What clowns you are. Your only recourse is to wrap yourself in FOX News lies so you never have to encounter just how bad you have behaved and the damage you've done to the world.
What do you mean "you people" you fucking racist?
It was big. It had participants ranging from CNN, MSNBC, Amazon, Jeff Bezos, The Washington Post, the New York Times, Mayors across the nation, blue checkmarks on twitter, CBS, NBC, ABC, HBO, Netflix, AAA video game companies too numerous to name, (fuck it, Sony Xbox, Bethesda, Ubisoft, Naughty Dog, Insomniac Games, Riot and others) the Persian Cat Strokers at The World Economic Forum, Teacher's Unions, School systems, 2/3ds of all corporations*. It was TOTES grass roots, Teoni! TOTES!

Don't tell that to BLM, you stupid cunt, because they were saying differently throughout 2020.
Here's an interview with the founders, you ignorant fuck:
"We are trained Marxists. We are super-versed on, sort of, ideological theories. And I think that what we really tried to do is build a movement that could be utilized by many, many black folk"
https://therealnews.com/pcullors0722blacklives
Meh, people have a right to be marxists, but that's not what BLM was about.
The youth wouldn't be so radical on economic philosophy if capitalism hadn't shat all over them their entire lives.
It actually is. The idea ultimately stems from Marxist thought from the 60's.
I saw an awful lot of white people at BLM and there are quite a few Indian Sikhs and people of other various non-white ancestry among the truckers. You are the only one brining race into this, you racist ass.
Ontario to end vaccine passports, lift restrictions 'in spite' of protests
https://ottawacitizen.com/news/local-news/ontario-to-end-vaccine-passports-lift-restrictions-in-spite-of-protests
The Canadian truckers are the most working class protest this country has had in decades.
BLM was a communist plot.
“ I was against vandalism because I knew how easily it could be used to smear the entire movement.”
Yeah, not because you are against violence or anything. Political extremist apologist and antisocial bootlicker over here is too dumb to even hide it.
Astro-turf???
You know how you know what is Astro turfed? You look at the institutional and elite support. BLM was Astro turfed.
Just saw on Telegram, the Canadians have built a snow barrier bristling with hockey sticks.
It's a great wall, eh
And Mexico paid for it.
To keep Cuban dictators out. Or their kids anyway.
I hope we get some numbers on the amount of arrests that happen today. Some of the leaders have been tossed in prison for Mischief, which is just Canada's version of "Disorderly Conduct." Extremely broad and vague.
All Parliament has to do is repeal the mandates. If that's too much, they could probably just carve an exception in the mandates for truck drivers and that would be a compromise to end it. It's so easy to NOT compel participation in an activity. They could have ended this on day zero or day one. Instead they're using War Powers on a peaceful protest.
Come on, do you think that the Canadian parliament is going to let itself be pushed around by blue collar protesters?
The only protesters they listen to is university educated neo-Marxists.
It is ever more obvious the only protesters they "listen to" are the ones they organize and control.
This is pretty rich coming from a magazine staffed by elitists, a magazine that actually opposes powerful, decentralized communications tools and instead supports the corporations that collaborate with the government and are the gatekeepers for centralized communications tools.
They are paid to strike a pose.
Livestreams on the ground have a large group of protestors trapped in a ring of officers surrounded by another ring of more protestors. Several arrests of organizers have occurred, but officers only are picking off individuals of opportunity now. RCMP is bringing in more officers.

Cops have been broadcasting warnings in English and French to leave now or be arrested. Everyone remaining is subject to fascism.

My favorite response to that comment was the one that called the Ottawa police response "worse than Tiananmen".
I wonder if that moron understands how entitled and self-absorbed he/she appears with a comment like that.
Not very? There's not much difference between a tank and a horse charge, and they're both protesting authoritarian control over their bodies.
If you weren't such a hateful fucking Nazi you'd realize that. Have I ever told you how much I loathe you and all the evil you represent?
I’m sure seeing a First Nations elder in a mobility scooter get trampled gave Jeff a chubby.
I seriously do not understand how leftists do not recognize their own evil when they're the loudest preachers of damnation.
It was clearly just worse than 9/11
Well, that was unnecessarily brutal.
https://gettr.com/post/pve8dsda00
So, Trudeau should obviously give in to the demands of the truckers and repeal all the COVID restrictions. After all that is what the people want. The government's job is just to blindly follow the will of the people.
And it stands to reason Trudeau's party will be trounced in the next election. All the conservatives hate him, and the liberals will feel betrayed and won't show up to support him. Then Canada will have a conservative government once again.
Perhaps then some left-wing protestors can organize a convoy on Ottawa that shuts down the whole city for weeks and weeks unless, say, the government enacts gun control. Or fights climate change by banning coal. Or cancels all student loan debt and makes all colleges free. Or whatever wacky left-wing idea they can come up with. And the conservative government at the time really will have no choice but to accede to those demands. After all it's what the people want, isn't it? The government's job is to blindly follow the will of the people in the moment, right?
Canadians could invent their own new system of government: Rule By Convoy. Whichever group has the biggest convoy and gets to the capital first, and can clog up the city most effectively, wins!
You are going to regret Rule By Convoy. The mandates are bad, yes. But Rule By Convoy (aka mob rule) is worse.
But I learned on the Reason comments board that mob rule actually refers to when 50%+ gets their way in democratic elections.
Literal mobs demanding policy changes by force, that's what freedom is all about.
I call them "situational anarchists". They will scream "tyranny" and yell "smash the state" when the state is going after people they are sympathetic towards. But when it comes to people that they don't like, suddenly, they develop a case of laryngitis.
Whereas democrats and progressives have always sided with the protest as long as it's mostly left-wing.
Gee, what a great point you're making about consistency.
It's not like you people had a problem with the most expensive riots in this country's history.
Exclusive: $1 billion-plus riot damage is most expensive in insurance history
https://www.axios.com/riots-cost-property-damage-276c9bcc-a455-4067-b06a-66f9db4cea9c.html
Where was your hand-wringing then? Oh, yeah: "mostly peaceful."
If that was mostly peaceful, the Canadian Truckers are all cloned reincarnations of Gandhi.
Blacks were protesting being murdered by cops with impunity. Being systematically cut out from full participation of the society they are supposed to partially own. Being murdered for their skin color by the state.
Some argue that a little vandalism, even violence, is justified if they help remedy such injustices. The United States was founded on this very principle, with much bloodshed to show for it.
Right-wing astroturf "truckers" (meaning F350 drivers, mostly) aren't protesting to remedy any insidious civil rights injustice they face. Everyone is living through the same pandemic. All they're doing is demonstrating that they're the whiniest members of society.
I remember when the Canadian truckers were just a small group of disaffected people.
Now they're a right-wing funded national emergency.
The problem with making up whatever narrative you like best is that, when completely disconnected from reality, they fail to allow for effective planning in terms of how to control the future.
That's why you've seen your narratives embraced by the highest powers in this country, and now you're going to lose it all come November.
And, let's face it: a lot of BLM was resentful Antifa losers looking for an excuse to break stuff and hurt people, along with communist cosplay weirdos.
But there was a coherent political goal with those protests. Any violence or vandalism was factually a minor aspect compared to the numbers of people participating peacefully. Anyone working to discredit the entire movement and its political goals with propagandistic highlighting of the few times among hundreds of thousands of people that there were imperfections is... kind of a racist asshole. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you don't actually believe anything, you're just repeating stuff you heard on FOX News.
Now explain what are the goals of the truck nutz crowd. Are they living under some kind of oppression the rest of us aren't?
They don't want to be forced to inject drugs against their will in violation of the Nuremberg code.
Nobody's forcing them to.
mandate: an official order or commission to do something.
Canadian Trucker Convoy Descends on Ottawa to Protest Vaccine Mandates
https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/29/world/americas/canada-trucker-protest.html
Sorry.
I know Brian, rightwingers hate that they have to obey laws and rules. Freedom means "I can shit in the US capitol if I want, you aren't my mom!"
One day you'll wake up from this manic episode and see it for the childishness it is. Though to be fair to children, I never behaved this obnoxiously as a child.
Your argument is so obviously, obnoxiously one-sided legalism that I can't take you seriously anymore.
You could literally apply it to any protest:
"Black people hate to obey segregation laws and rules!"
"Black people hate to obey voting laws and rules!"
"Black people hate to obey slavery laws and rules!"
You can always say:
"Protestors hate to obey laws and rules!"
That's the point of a protest, apparently:
https://www.850wftl.com/aoc-the-whole-point-of-protesting-is-to-make-people-uncomfortable/
Please find an argument that isn't ridiculous. This is getting tedious.
Not every law is good just because its a law. Only defeated, petty bootlickers that.
Yes, some laws are good and some are bad.
But sometimes when black people violate no law at all, they are shot dead.
And sometimes when fat white people violate all the laws, they are given bear hugs by the cops who are supposed to arrest them.
Hence every fucking thing BLM is about.
You still have to obey laws you don't like. Did they not teach that to you in kindergarten?
But sometimes when truckers violate no law at all, they are subjected to horse charges.
Peaceful picketing is protected by Canada's constitution and Charter of Rights which not even the Emergency Act can supersede.
The Trudeau junta and the police are now lawless criminals.
“ But sometimes when black people violate no law at all, they are shot dead.
And sometimes when fat white people violate all the laws, they are given bear hugs by the cops who are supposed to arrest them.”
Another very obviously skewed Tony fallacy. Your strategic use of “sometimes” is the clue here.
Because sometimes, black cops excuse black people for crimes. Sometimes, white cops arrest white offenders. Sometimes, whites who break no law at all are shot dead by police. Sometimes, gay people favor gays over straights.
You fail to give actual numbers on how often your “sometimes” really occurs. That is because in conventional reality, your victim-theatre, the basis of BLMs ideology, has no ground to stand on. Check fbi racial crime statistics for good measure.
All BLM is about is playing the victim, being corrupt, exerting racism against white people, and monetizing on the few incidents where the race of the actors fits their pathetic oppression narrtive.
How corrupt do you have to be to lose amazons support?
Why do you keep asking this question when you refuse to listen to the answer? Do you think you’re impressing anyone with your intentional ignorance?
He's such a control freak that he can't actually deal with a two-sided conversation.
A right to a particular job without having to live up to your contractural or legal obligations.
A right not to be shot for being black.
I only have so much time in the day. I'll get to your problem after there are literally no starving children anywhere on earth.
A contract requires consent between two parties, and a segregation was once a legal obligation. Sorry, but no points awarded.
Now, run along.
The only thing a real libertarian would tell these truckers is "Stop complaining and get another job."
But I understand Trump turned you all into fire-breathing socialists.
Right after we turn to the government and say, "take your mandate and shove it."
So that’s a yes on the ignorance.
"The only thing a real libertarian would tell these truckers is "Stop complaining and get another job."
Real libertarians don't tell people to obey fascist government mandates for private jobs, you Nazi freak.
Yes, ending Racism, Capitalism, and the Nuclear Family are all coherent political goals, and ending useless COVID mandates is nebulous pie in the sky nonsense
“The problem with making up whatever narrative you like best”
Unfortunately for Tony, that’s all he knows.
Oh, get down off the cross. We need the wood.
Hey guess what, both teams are full of tribalistic morons that put tribe over principle while rationalizing their tribalism in vague concepts like "freedom" or "equity"! You figured it out!
Fuck off, shill. Quit pretending your not here to fifty-cent and fluff for the Democratic Party.
I love that collectivistjeff equates "freedom" and "equity".
The best part is he/him doesn't even realize what a huge self-indictment that is.
Or, and I'm just spit-balling here, the leader of the country could have actually met with the convoy, listened to their grievances, and, I don't know, maybe I'm reaching a little here, but taken a stab at negotiating a way out of this mess.
Instead, we have this.
You'd think there would be a few steps taken prior to enacting Emergency Powers just to disperse a peaceful protest.
The reason the protest isn't stopping is because they deprived all of these people of jobs and they have literally nowhere else to go.
What, calling them fringe racists with beyond-the-pale beliefs doesn't count?
It's almost like that's the only move they have.
That would deny power to the elites. And, as jeffy has said in the past, mobs are almost never right. I mean, just look at Brexit. It took 5 years, 3 prime ministers and 4 elections to actually happen. This absurd deference to the elites just entrenches them.
What are their grievances? Do you even know?
Seems like it's hating "fags" and "commies," mostly.
Is ignorance link a kink to you or something?
You can always spot a desperate control freak because they have to take your side of the conversation, too.
I wish you weren't so fuckin' awkward, bud.
He writes like a serial killer.
Fortunately he's way too pathetic to actually act on it.
Here's your answer:
https://bariweiss.substack.com/p/what-the-truckers-want
Let's talk through this because it's nice to at least engage in good faith disagreement.
The people who are protesting are protesting against a deprivation of essential liberties. They've been given an order to either inject something into their bodies or lose their ability to work. The government does not necessarily have to give into their demands, but since they've taken these people's jobs, these individuals have literally nothing better to do than protest the government.
If someone else wants to start a protest, they can. They should ensure it's peaceful. It would be nice if they could follow this example where they're actually helping clean the streets, taking care of their own trash, shoveling snow off the sidewalks, and singing the national anthem, but none of those pleasantries are required for a protest.
However, what a protest cannot do is demand a deprivation of essential rights and liberties of others by government force over an unwilling majority. They can protest all they like but they can't demand anyone be deprived of their rights without due process. They can ask for social programs like free college or student loan forgiveness but the government is not obliged to steal from others to give to protestors (even if it happens all the time).
The government's job is never to blindly follow the will of the people, the only job of government is to protect the rights of the governed. I don't think you'll find many here who argue that rule by "the will of the people" is a good thing. We have constitutions specifically to protect the rights of individuals and minorities from being trampled by the heat of emotions in any given moment. The government can do nothing that doesn't respect the rights of the governed.
Beyond that, if every political movement wants to start up their convoy to try to bring social change, they should feel absolutely free. Public discourse strengthens a population by exerting all positions to public scrutiny. The free flow of ideas is healthy for any nation and no barriers should be inserted-not even for bad ideas or lies because sunlight is the strongest disinfectant.
They've been given an order to either inject something into their bodies or lose their ability to work.
This is going to get me every time. The state attaching an arbitrary and completely unrelated precondition on a person making their living is just a shade below enslaving or disappearing people in terms of despicability. It's evil. Remember, taking a man’s livelihood is akin to killing him.
As Western Society becomes increasingly post-religious it's become obvious that there needs to be some other legal foundation to protect our freedom of thought and freedom to not conform, a guarantee of ecumenicism that the protection of religion has historically performed.
I don't know how to make that work, but the need is becoming obvious.
Lemme know when you need the missionaries. We'll be glad to help!
Pandemics can take down continent-wide civilizations. This was the least draconian pandemic response in history, thanks to misguided propagandized dupes being told by their favorite media figures that hygiene is oppression.
Unlike the bad old days, we have vaccines now. Children are required to have vaccines before they enter a school. It's been this way for a hundred years.
You only care because you've been told to.
"This was the least draconian pandemic response in history, thanks to misguided propagandized dupes"
LOL!
I'm sorry the pandemic response wasn't draconian enough for you.
Far from it.
How much unilateral power did you support giving George W. Bush after 9/11? Did you support the Patriot Act? Cheer on his invasions of other countries based on lies?
Conservatives' main problem is that they are too dumb to see any threat that doesn't come in the form of human agents. But viruses are better than war at killing off humans.
The funny thing is you people even tried to anthropomorphize it into a human enemy tribe, i.e., "China virus." But alas you couldn't stick with it. Viruses are, like, not even real probably. You can't see them!

You have to realize that many liberals don't trust the government, media, and other institutions because they haven't delivered on liberal goals. Remember when the mainstream media was so addicted to Donald Trump they accidentally made him president?
I don't automatically trust any of those things either. They're just groups of people, and people are fucking morons.

Brian, I'm trying to help you, but you don't seem to ever do any thinking. You just have some half-formed images of things you saw on right-wing media and are randomly raging in half-assed ways about them.
Wokeness, or the phenomenon where progressives on Twitter behave obnoxiously, is obviously a problem. So is the right-wing radicalization happening on said internets. I agree. The internet has become a radicalism factory. If you think SJWs are bad, you should get a load of QAnoners.
Fuck off Tony. Nobody here supported the invasion of Iraq and you know it.
Meanwhile, you hated on Trump who always opposed it, and your team is celebrating neocon warmongers like Goldberg joining CNN and giving standing ovations to Darth Cheney.
And now you're beating war drums for the Ukraine.
So you can fuck off with the phony pretense.

“I can choose any narrative I want!” certainly isn’t working for you.

The people who are protesting are protesting against a deprivation of essential liberties.
Okay, let's be real precise here. What essential liberties? You say:
They've been given an order to either inject something into their bodies or lose their ability to work.
That's actually not true. What the government has said, is that if they want to work as a trucker, and if they want to cross the US-Canada, and if they don't want to get vaccinated, and if they don't want to quarantine after every transit across the border, then they can't work *as a trucker crossing the border*. The rule does not apply to trucking within Canada, and the rule does not prevent a trucker from working in another occupation.
Furthermore - there is no "essential liberty" to have a job, let alone to have a specific job like truck driver. No one has, or ought to have, the authority to force the government to guarantee them a job.
So what the government is actually doing is making it a little harder for these truck drivers to practice their profession. And yes that is bad. But don't dress it up as something worse than it is.
Meanwhile they elected a president on a campaign of expelling or imprisoning people for the crime of crossing the southern border while human.
Canadian truckers elected Trump? You're even more retarded than I thought.
90% of Canadian truck drivers are vaccinated. This is a mob of QAnon goons.
You're psychotic. A mob of 20,000 Canadian QAnons. Mostly middle-age men and women. Do you realize how fucking delusional that is?
Self-awareness isn’t his forte.
Well I didn't make it up. Why don't you use the internet to get information for once instead of digging deep enough until you find some plausible justification for your Jew conspiracy obsessions?
You really are a freak. Nobody here talks about Jews but you.
How ironic for you to tell us to look up information in the internet when you're the one that's spouting out misinformation... why continue the dishonesty you display?
You say: They've been given an order to either inject something into their bodies or lose their ability to work.
That's actually not true... if they don't want to get vaccinated... then they can't work *as a trucker crossing the border*"
Who the hell did you think you were tricking here, Jeff?
All the navel gazing about parallels to earlier protest movements misses the point: we have a group of people that want to be left alone and Jeff is here defending the actions of a government that refuses to leave them alone. Not the rationale or the power - the actual actions. Jeff naturally seems to hate his reputation around here as more left than libertarian, but he refuses to take more than token action to diminish it.
Somehow we've gotten to the point where conservative populists are more instinctively libertarian than Libertarian partisans. I blame Bill Weld.
YOU are missing the larger point here.
I don't support the mandates. I also don't support shutting down an entire city for weeks and weeks in protest of those mandates. The people of Ottawa deserve to be able to go about their business too. Did that ever occur to you?
And the larger point here, is that if Trudeau is going to back down based on these protests, it establishes the precedent of Rule By Convoy. Whoever has the biggest convoy and can shut down the city for the largest period of time, wins! Is this what you want? Is this "instinctively libertarian" to you?
Do you ever stop lying?
“…. the authority to force the government to guarantee them a job.” Wow.
“But don’t dress it up as something worse than it is.” Ummmm…. Just wow. Haha.

lol whatever.
Sometimes you support things because they are right. What the truckers are demanding is right. When government becomes tyrannical, which is what has happened over the past 2 years in many places, people need to do something.
Do you think that the majority supported the American civil rights movement for blacks when it first started? Would you have been telling them they are a bunch of bad idiots for trespassing at lunch counters and holding protest marches that disrupted traffic and that they should just behave themselves until the government sees fit to respect their basic rights?
Yes, he would.
You *really believe* vaccine mandates are akin to Jim Crow? Tell me you're not serious, Zeb.
I do. The same principles, motivations and results, you Nazi fuck.
“Pay off my student debts that I freely signed up for!”
“Don’t force drug injections on me!”
Totes the same, Jeff. Damn.
I've been following Viva Frei in the background today, to see if he will get arrested in Ottawa. I hope not, but at least one streamer was arrested.
Seen at least two takedowns so far. One was nabbed for filming non-local police forces arriving.
Who got arrested? This comes of as shocking.
The closest analogy to what is happening in Canada is the Seattle CHAZ.
LOL
Only if the Truckers were shooting people and had a noticeable death toll.
Well, not really. The truckers need to up their rape stats if they want to be on CHAZ level. They're posting rookie numbers right now.
The truckers are going to have to up their rape game.
The closest analogy is what Indian farmers did recently, which led to the Indian government talking to them repeatedly and which Trudeau actually supported
Until Trump. Can you not see Trump as an embodiment of the Tea Parties that actually turned from mere frustration and negativity to a Republican Party that does not fail at every step?
The Tea Parties by their nature were an "anti-" thing. People forget that they were a series of protest events, like the Boston Tea Party for which they were named — not an actual party as in a political party or legal party. But out of protest eventually came accomplishment, which is still ongoing. They've turned the Republicans from go-along-to-get-along into an activist tool.
However, in the wake of the protests, there were Tea Party organizations that formed, composed of old members of the John Birch Society chapters. They conducted educational meetings and continued about as ineffectual as the JBS.
Remember when our PM took a knee with BLM(Of course black lives matter, but the organization is a scam, and OBVIOUS scam at that)? Remember when he came out and sympathised with whoever burned fifty churches across Canada? Remember when the anti-energy protesters were blocking roads and access for weeks and he sent a delegate to speak with them? Remember when he supported the Indian tractor blockades in India and chastised the Indian government? Remember how he wore black face so many times he couldn't remember how many times?
Now that he can see the protesters, that they are on his doorstep, he has contempt for them.
First, if you think Canada is an authoritarian government, you have been drinking the kool-aid. Our government should show our citizens the same compassion. Next, the revolt is being partially funded through GoFundMe organizations by AMERICANS. We are trespassing on Canadian sovereignty. Third, parking and abandoning trucks so that commerce cannot take place is not peaceful protest, it results in people losing jobs and income. Nothing benign about it.
And January 6 was not acceptable political discourse.
So you missed the whole thing with gofundme and the other donation site?
Other than that though, you’re post is full of shit.
Nice try.
"First, if you think Canada is an authoritarian government, you have been drinking the kool-aid..."

I can see you are experienced with unemployment. Not surprised. It is only a partial recovery of income.
You are still an ignoramus and are:

Shit.
Third, parking and abandoning trucks so that commerce cannot take place is not peaceful protest
Except that didn't happen you delusional freak.
There are plenty of nearby alternative border crossings by Coutts and the Ambassador Bridge, and the only traditional commerce taking place on Parliament Hill in Ottawa is politicians peddling their asses.
CNN is a heck of a drug.
It's the same thing as with Rittenhouse and Trayvon. People are absolutely dead certain of a position that's completely fabricated.
You ever live in Detroit. They blocked the main artery. Sure they have a tunnel, they keep it open. Then ML - why did US auto factories close for lack of parts. Ignorance is a heck of a drug.
I see you OD'd.
They literally just ran over demonstrators with horses
They are threatening to seize bank accounts of anyone they want.
How is either thing not authoritarian?
Ya HAD to go woke, dintchya?
These truckers are nothing like the other 'movements" you cited. (by tthe bye, since yuo are a "reporter" you MUST KNOW that George Floyd was not "murdered" by anyone but his sorry and sick self. He had ingested, deliberatly, a four times lethal dose of fantanyl along with a chaser ot a twice lethal hit of meth. If that cop had never found him he'd have still been dead within a few minutes of when he did die. That was suicide by drug overdose. He'd tried it before and failed. This time he made it.
No, these Cnadian truck operators know exactly what they are protestin,g have clearly spoken exactly their beef, and the cure they demand, AND clearly stated they will not go home or back to work until they get it. How much more focussed can anyone get? They hav also, in sharp contrast to ALL the "movements " you mentioined excepting possibly the Tea Party movement. The truck operators have so far been calm, courteous, articulating about precisely wat they are protesting AND the cure which will make them stand down. There has been not one incident of wanton violence, destruction, public disorder (parking a truck where some gummit poohbah doesn't want him to is NOT "violence", not even "disorder". ) rebellion, or any other such thing.
The ONLY thing that wil prevent this project from success is if the government of Canada continue to treat these guys, and everyone else involved, like dog doo on the bottom or their boots. THAT may fore a "calming" for a season but they will provoke again, soon. Once they're on roll, nothjing else will satisfy them.
the tea party got usurped by republicans and made a joke to the world. groups like these have need for bodies and cannot vet them all. i wish these guys luck

This wasn't "the common people pushing back." It was a very small group of irresponsible zealots who were working AGAINST the common people. The citizens of Ottawa were so angry at these people that they obtained a court order against their activities, as these "protesters" were upending their lives.
The "common people" are tired of the irresponsible ignoramuses who refuse to get vaccinated and are thus hurting all of us by preventing an end to the COVID pandemic. The vast majority of Canadian truckers--90% are vaccinated--- actually opposed this action, which was funded by right wing radical American money. All this money did was disrupt the supply chain and bring further shame on the United States.
I'm glad these people are finally being arrested and their vehicles and money impounded. That should have started weeks ago. It is time for the actions of these criminals to be treated as such.
Five stars. I haven't seen bootlicking fetish porn this fresh in a long time.

You.
Remain.
Full.
Of.
Shit.
And an ignoramus besides.
So true!

Using the extraordinary powers in Canada's Emergencies Act are supposed to expire after 30 days, unless re-approved by Parliament for a specific time period. A mere 5 days in, @cafreeland says the Trudeau gov't will make some of the powers it grants the state permanent. #cdnpoli

Holy crap, this is a "this is what they actually believe" moment for Reason.
You really don't understand anything that is happening around you at all, do you?
The Trucker protest is organic, from the bottom up. It is born of frustration with pointless mandates that are directed specifically at them, beyond any legal authority. All you have to do to know this is to simply listen to them. Quit getting your information through the filter of an opinion writer who read what some other writer wrote about what he thinks about it.
It is a uniquely Canadian movement. Their complaints struck a nerve with a citizenry tired of government overreach and tired of living under lockdown.
There is still no centralized command and control.
Meanwhile, BLM is entirely a think-tank creation, designed to harness anger that was pre-existing and usurp issues that were genuine, but ultimately fostered and nurtured by a bunch of leftist think tank and community organizing groups, ultimately beholding to the CWPA and the Obama machine. It is the opposite of the trucker protest. It is the tool of the political elite, used to chanel manufactured anger into political power.
The only curated, manufactured and controlled action in Canada is in the opposition to the truckers. All you have to do is watch live streams from locals. They are doing the same tactics, blocking cameras, telling people they are not allowed to speak, shouting down media they see as "not their allies". Meanwhile, the truckers are happy to tell you why they are there, as are their allies.
Before writing on the topic again, burn a day or two catching up on Livestream coverage. You will see what is at issue and what is not. And you will very clearly see what is an organic movement and what is astroturf.
I have been able to literally watch this movement forming as people are figuring shit out - on encrypted channels, because it's in opposition to a tyrannical government.
You'd think reporters had never heard of Telegram.
Gillespie equating the Ottawa protests to BLM is so lacking in Common Sense as to reveal him as wholly post enlightenment, and no friend of actual liberty.
Marxists in libertarian skinsuits.
I will say it is funny, in a sad way, watching Canadians get so pissed off about how this tarnishes their image as sane, polite people.
Canada isn't that much different from America. Roughly similar demographics, the same rural vs. urban population.
What people are missing when they bash America for our supposedly uniquely stupid Trumper trash is that this is an online phenomenon that, like most things, finds America ahead of the curve. America is innovating this form of right-wing organizing, just like it innovated modern democracy, national parks, flight, industrial-scale burgers, and the internet itself.
You can tell yourselves stories about how your culture is uniquely polite, but they're coming for you! You have the same internet we do, and your humans have the same easily manipulated brains.
JFC, you are stupid.
Does this tarnish the national image much, you self-absorbed sociopath?

Meanwhile, RCMP has officially stated that nobody was hurt but the horse.
Tony, the day is coming when your apoplectic rage is going cause you to drop dead of a heart attack at your keyboard, you fat, fascist piece of shit. And that will be a great day.
How dare you call me fat.
Has anyone verified that the goons beating demonstrators in Ottawa are actually Canadian police officers? Or ever Canadians?
No. And the streamer filming their arrival was arrested.
Heard they were foreigners, speaking neither English nor French, but that was just Telegram scuttlebutt. Have not had corroboration.
Justin Trudeau had suspended Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms and is cracking down on peaceful protestors with government storm troopers.
That’s the most Hitler thing anyone’s done in the western world in my lifetime.
And nobody is allowed to say he can't do it. This is a Fidel Castro style strongman government. Junior took notes.

The Canadian parliament can have a no-confidence vote at any time, which forces Castreau to face the voters in a pretty short time frame.

Americans need to respect Canada's sovereignty - their dog is not in this fight. Personally, I don't like people who decide to make my life difficult because they believe they have rights. Governments, corporations, truckers in Canada. They tried the olive leaf, now they get the stick.
How are the truckers making your life difficult? You can still do your job by going around any blocked roads. The government on the other hand is using authoritarian power if the truckers will not give in to any vaccine mandates.
We also have a right to voice our support for individuals and organizations outside our country.
It's disgusting that you support violence against these protestors, not so different from what the British did against the Indian nationalists that wanted independence.
Lick those Boots!
The Jack type!
it is a good topic

Trudeau is a piece of communist trash. That's all he is. communist trash. It wouldn't bother him one bit if every church in Canada was torched. He's probably planning at this moment to find a way get rid of the entire opposition party in Canada's Parliament. without a doubt he want's to jail everyone who opposes him.
Trudeau is a cheap little dictator, a piece of human trash, at the same time a mamma's boy, a little teenage toddler tyrant.
There is nothing decent or good about this poor excuse for a human being, let alone a national leader. He is as degraded as they come. Totally corrupted, self serving, completely full of himself, arrogant and conceited like George Bush , Bill Clinton or Obama, and willing to do anything to remain in power.
It wouldn't surprise me if he dissolves the government and makes himself absolute dictator. He would then use the opportunity to eliminate all who oppose him. he would be as ruthless as any other dictator.
So watch out, people of Canada. You're in a dangerous situation where Trudeau could and may very well, make himself absolute dictator.
The fact they dont represent the People is normally hidden.
The rate at which they dont represent the People is a similar function mapping onto the rate of change to Communism.
If the rate of change from non- representation to Communism is represented by U, then the rate is represented by F(u).
The derivatives of F(u), d/du F(u) is a power function.
The maximum rate of F(u) is when d/du F(u) becomes zero, and the shit hits the fan.
Thats the point when trucks cease running.
"Rotten Economy" ? Really ?! 4% unemployment, stock market @ 35,000....so, what does a good economy look like??
Well, the Canadian Parliament sided with Trudeau.
The Biden Administration must be jealous that they can't do the same thing.
Hold their beer.
