How China Corrupted the World Health Organization's Response to COVID-19
Trump isn't absolved of his own failures in confronting the pandemic, but the WHO's response to the coronavirus destroyed much of its credibility and damaged the field of public health.
HD DownloadThe World Health Organization (WHO) put out questionable guidance on how to deal with the coronavirus, it was slow to communicate the magnitude of the threat, and it whitewashed the Chinese government's early handling of the crisis.
President Donald Trump, who put a hold on WHO funding yesterday, isn't absolved of his own failures in confronting COVID-19. But there's no doubt that the WHO's response destroyed much of its credibility, damaged the field of public health, and failed to contain the pandemic.
The WHO's actions in response to COVID-19, in part, stemmed from its overly deferential stance towards China, which is its second-biggest financial contributor among 194 member states.
"A phenomenal collective action by the people of China to this response" is how Bruce Aylward, head of the joint WHO-China mission, described China's handling of the outbreak on February 25, 2020, a day after WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus praised China's "rapid response," which he claimed "changed the course of this epidemic."
The WHO also praised China for releasing the virus's genome while neglecting to mention that it took them at least 17 days to do so. It didn't report human-to-human transmission until late January—even though Chinese doctors suspected it at least a month earlier. Although the extreme lockdown of Wuhan likely saved thousands of lives, WHO scientists weren't allowed into Wuhan until 3 weeks after the outbreak first came to light, leaving open many questions about measures the government took in the interim. Meanwhile, the WHO praised the country for its supposed openness.
"China took action at the epicenter, and that helped prevent the spread to other provinces and the rest of the world," Ghebreyesus said on February 15.
"As China has shown, this does not need to be a pandemic if we take action," WHO Executive Director Michael Ryan said on February 28.
As the virus continued spreading across Europe and reached America, the WHO recommended "no interference with international travel."
One country that ignored this advice was Taiwan, which also warned the WHO that it suspected that the virus was spreading through human-to-human transmission, yet was ignored. Taiwan, which has one of the lowest rates of known COVID-19 infections per capita, was prevented from joining the WHO as a member country in 2015 by China, which refuses to acknowledge Taiwan's independence.
In late March, World Health Organization epidemiologist Bruce Aylward declined to answer a Hong Kong reporter's question about Taiwan—or even acknowledge its existence.
As Taiwan was distributing face masks to its citizens, the WHO was advising the rest of the world that they were unnecessary—and initially, the Centers for Disease Control and U.S. Surgeon General followed its lead.
But health experts pointed to mounting evidence that masks can help slow the spread of respiratory disease, especially among asymptomatic carriers, a population that the WHO maintains is virtually nonexistent despite mounting evidence to the contrary.
In mid-February, the WHO trumpeted good news from China, claiming confirmed and suspected cases of COVID-19 had declined, ignoring evidence that it may have been a statistical anomaly. U.S. intelligence, meanwhile, believes that China has entirely misrepresented both case numbers and death tolls, according to Bloomberg News.
Finally on March 11, after Italy was already in full national lockdown with more than 10,000 cases, the WHO finally acknowledged the true magnitude of the crisis, declaring a global pandemic.
As the death toll climbs above 100,000, the global economy remains in crisis, and billions of lives are disrupted, it's important to remember that if the World Health Organization had done its job, the nightmare we're living through might not have happened at all.

Trump isn't absolved of his own failures in confronting the pandemic, but
Phew!
If you point out Trump's failures, you have a clear case of Trump Derangement Syndrome.
You couldn't even bring yourself to saying Trump defunding the US contribution to the WHO as a good thing for him.
Because it's not. A president with a good sense of strategy would be using this as an opportunity to outflank China at the WHO, not leave China to gain even more influence over it and the planet. Of course, Dementia Donald and his cultists never thinks that far ahead; they can't when their sole reason for being is slavishly covering Trump's pathologically narcissistic behind.
A president with a good sense of strategy would be using this as an opportunity to outflank China at the WHO, not leave China to gain even more influence over it and the planet.
Perhaps withdrawing from 'world control organizations' would neuter China's influence over 'the planet'.
Exactly. Don’t play their game. Start a better one.
Yeah I don't buy into that. If I am giving money to a cause that I come to find out if a front for a bad organization, I don't continue giving them money with the hopes of changing the organization....that just fuels their power. You withdraw your support of that organization and use that money to fund something better.
I'm not to sure about that. Everyone involved in the response, reporting and preventive strategies regarding the Covid-19 hysteria (Fung-Flu for the layperson) will have the finger pointed at them at one point or another. Trump just makes his incompetence and "blame everyone else but me" attitude more obvious!
"Trump just makes his incompetence and “blame everyone else but me” attitude more obvious!"
Yes, of course we'll accept a lying fucking lefty ignoramus' arm-waving as 'evidence'.
Witty Sevo never disappoints!
You always do.
Brain-dead Wearenotperfect never provides one bit of evidence to support his lies.
'Witty' not required to call you on your constant bullshit, lefty asshole.
"Evidence is a social construct of the white supremacist cisheteropatriarchy used to oppress marginalized peoples."
Witty Sevo is Nitty.
Yes, of course you'll accept a lying fucking righty ignoramus' like Kellyanne Conway's arm-waving as "evidence." Think The Lyin' King Midas grabbed her pu**y long ago and turned her into stupid? A long time ago? "It's not CORVID-1." "Alternate Facts." Yeah, sure, Kellyanne. Sevo, are you a relative of KC?
"If you point out Trump’s failures, you have a clear case of Trump Derangement Syndrome."
You might try actually, you know, pointing them out if you would like a rep as other than a TDS victim.
Ya beat me to it.
Zach's genuflecting to TDS w/o providing a single specific leaped off the page.
Why bother? Anyone who still needs Trump's nonstop failures listed for them is a lost cause. The shrinking Trump Defensiveness Syndrome echo chamber already knows it will respond to any such list with their usual litany of angry excuses, lies, minimizations, rationalizations, "But Obama" deflections, and Fox News Orange Man Perfect propaganda.
"Lyin' King Perfect" better descriptive term?
"If you point out Trump’s failures"
Except that's precisely what he didn't do - point out Trump's failures.
He instead alluded to entirely unspecified failures. Typical TDS.
Try to get a Trump hater to *precisely* specify *anything* racist from Trump. They can never do it, but it never gives them pause to condemn Trump as a White Supremacist Nazi Klansman.
Trump's rental discrimination policies he was sued for twice by Nixon's justice department were racist.
Trump's repeated calls for the execution of the Central Park 5 was racist.
Trump running around telling racist birther lies about Obama was racist.
Trump launching his white supremacist scampaign with the lie that most Mexican immigrants were "rapists and murderers was racist."
Trump's insistence that an American judge's Mexican family-of-origin rendered him unfit was so racist even Paul Ryan called him out for it.
Trump's retweeting of fake crime stats about blacks during the 2016 campaign was racist.
Trump's retweeting of antisemitic imagery from neo-Nazi and skinhead accounts was racist.
Trump praising pro-Confederate tiki torch Charlottesville Nazis and their pals was racist.
So, yes, we can do it. It's just that incel victims of Trump Defensiveness Syndrome brainwashing refuse to accept the specifications and response to them, every time and right on cue, with deflections, denials, outright lies, minimization, and blind devotion to their Orange Dear Leader, who must never ever be criticized for anything at all ever.
But, he has such good posture.
You obviously have been off-planet for a while, or in a coma. Or visiting an alternative reality with alternate facts.

I agree, Chipper.
If one points out Trump's failures one is a clear-thinking, patriotic American, in the mold of the Founding Fathers of the Republic--you know--those hair-on-fire political radicals, like Ben Franklin, or Tom Jefferson, or George Washington. If one tries to defend the grifting, narcissistic, lying, ignorant, anti-science, repeatedly bankrupt, misogynistic, anti-working Americans, pro-giant corporate polluters, pro-Wall Street Banksters, pro-Big Oil, pro-Big Pharma Bozo who lost the popular election by millions of votes and reached the White House because of The Grifter-In-Chief's above-listed most charming character traits listed just above, you live in the magical thinking world of Wonderland and are personally acquainted with Alice.
When The Lyin' King and his plutocratic, cynical, wealthy 1%er, Vulture Capitalist aristocratic syndicate piss on you and tell you it's raining, you believe them. It is you and those like you who suffer from TDS. Sadly, you're probably a hard-working American or small-business owner who needs to let go of the ankles you've been holding for the Republiconartists for decades.
Gotta make sure you include the ubiquitous orange man bad language, otherwise you might miss out on the cool kid parties.
I guess the threat of excommunication by the Georgetown Le Beau Monde set is losing it's strength under the Covid cloud.
Both Robby and The Jacket have recently admitted that on occasion Trump isn't literally Hitler. and that other parties may occasionally share the blame.
Right, he should just parrot the nonstop Daddy Trump Perfect language of Trump's cult of insecure incel betas, recruited into white supremacy and Trump's vortex of angry white male greivance, because they're still mad Chad got the girl.
Wow. I see you got a lot of pent up anger. Sorry about that.
Will you do us all a favor and melt down on camera when Trump gets re-elected? The comedy moment will be precious.
Please distinguish from PRAISE after the fact, and WHO's own behavior. WHO operates in every country. It has to win the support of Dictators (and thin skinned Presidents) alike. It has no choice but to be POLITICAL. It ALSO PRAISED Trump's actions! (and he is still cutting off their funding!)
"A phenomenal collective action by the people of China to this response" on February 25, 2020
This is the right thing to say. Why? China FINALLY did take aggressive action. So, WHO PRAISED them. Like is SHOULD.
No purpose, other than getting itself booted from being there, would be served by WHO calling out PAST negligence.
"CHINA REALLY MESSED THIS UP!"
WHO
As to openness? Of COURSE it PRAISED them AFTER it was more OPEN.
Would you have it say:
"CHINA KEPT SECRETS, ENDANGERED LIVES!"
WHO
Reason dictates that its best for all of us if international organizations are on the ground in dictatorships as well as democracies.
Remember WHO didn't LIE. WHO passed on information from the source it had to rely on, CHINA. Just as in most nations.
As to: "the WHO recommended "no interference with international travel."
That's right. Meta analyses from 2014 published by WHO before the Crona Virus recommended, based on evidence, that international travel travel restrictions NOT be employed. There were deemed ineffective at stopping a virus, and would interfere in international mitigation efforts.
"One country that ignored this advice was Taiwan"
But you assume it avoided a problem because of the travel restrictions, not because of all the other things that it did (widespread EARLY testing) that WE did not do. In any event, it doesn't negate that WHO's advice on travel restrictions was based on data and evidence, not politics.
China refuses to acknowledge Taiwan's independence.
That has nothing to do with a Virus. Its a political dispute.
Some thoughts.
With all due respect, the Chinese government is the most evil in the history of the world. Reporting their claims without independent corroboration IS wrong, and should be condemned.
And no, reason does NOT dictate that supposedly scientific bodies should have to make decisions based on the political desires of totalitarian nations. In fact, it suggests the opposite.
In a worldwide poll, people were asked which country they deemed the most dangerous to world peace. The first chosen was North Korea, the second was the United States.
Looks like the wall street captains of capitalism don't think the Chinese to be so evil, our to sheer greed, they gutted all US manufacturing and moved it along with all the machines to the totalitarian commies in China. It is the reason why we can't get ventilators not even simple face masks. And I bet you do buy products made by those most evil people in the history of the world.
I for one, think worldwide poles are a great way to come to reasonable conclusions.
Even better than CNN national poles!
Pretty sure those 'national' CNN goodies are a truly representative sampling of Berkeley, SF, Boston and (for mid-west representation) Madison WI.
See how easy it is to be 'national'?
Don't forget Austin TX and Portland OR.
"With all due respect, the Chinese government is the most evil in the history of the world."
With all due respect, you need to learn some history. The Chinese government IS pretty evil; Might not quite match the concentrated evil of North Korea, but as they say, "Quantity has a quality all its own."
But China barely plumbs the depths some governments in history have achieved.
Excuse me, but Aylward from WHO did not acknowledge Taiwan's existence, parroting the line China fed them. And he did the LIE in such a condescending, smarmy way, it turned the stomachs of all who listened.
As to the rest of your obeisance to China's WHO, not worth commenting on. Suffice to say, China OWNS WHO. The US pays their rent.
#WHOLiedPeopleDied
You blow them if you want to. I'm voting wood chipper.
Yep, saying anything critical of Our Glorious Leader is deranged. Also, lets also ignore all of the valuable bits of info in the article.
"Yep, saying anything critical of Our Glorious Leader is deranged."
More bullshit arm-waving.
It’s called virtue signaling now.
While making the obligatory and *unspecified* charge against "Orange Man Bad" at the end, Zach failed to note the part Reason played as *Globalists* in causing the pandemic. Typical.
Everyone thank the Globalists for flooding America with #coronavirus through Chinese work and student visas, and gutting American medical manufacturing, making us dependent on the CCP for our very lives.
Once again, we have been badly let down by the staff of Reason given the fact that those who have produced this piece make the claim that
"President Donald Trump, who put a hold on WHO funding yesterday, isn't absolved of his own failures in confronting COVID-19, "
and yet they fail to otherwise objectively or subjectively substantiate their claim.
It would be incorrect to question Reason's take on the implications for the WHO, and it is clear that was the focus of the write-up/video. However, that does not absolve Reason of their responsibility to provide information supporting their claim about President Trump. Reason's proclaimed independence demands nothing less.
Only 3300 reported dead in China from WuFlu. Everyone else died from lead poisoning. (hot lead).
I too have been very suspicious about their number of new COVID-19 deaths being so very low for weeks.
Meanwhile in NYC, they've been reclassifying deaths in Jan/Feb as Covid related in order to get the 20% premium from fed repayment on costs for care.
I also suspect they have played joke, and put pee pee in our coke. Which makes it hard to do lines.
Counting the number of ash urns that made their way to Wuhan's many crematoria running 24/7, the best estimate of deaths in Wuhan ALONE is over 45,000 and counting.
Of course, there have been NO deaths anywhere else in China (cough cough, choke choke).
Since the Brooklyn Bridge has been sold many times over, I'll make you a good deal on the WIlliamsburg or GWB if you believe China's numbers.
Orson Bean to be reclassified as a WuFlu victim. He was run down by a Carolla.
Adam?
You beat me to it.
He’s literally a millionaire.
John Truman Wolfe, published author, Amazon Best Seller, has written an exposé on the World Health Organization (WHO) as the real criminal in this Coronavirus pandemic. He's got it all detailed with dates and facts...
https://go.aws/2yTECrh
"it's important to remember that if the World Health Organization had done its job"
I don't know, if your employer tells you to jump...isn't that now your job?
Pretty much. Once China figured out they were screwed, and decided that it was important the rest of the world take the hit, too, making sure it spread widely WAS the WHO's job.
WHO's on first? To be sure this strikes me as an Adhanom-en fallacy.
The Chinese Communist Party leadership obfuscated and lied about the transmissability and lethality of the Wuhan coronavirus. This is no longer in dispute. Their lies and actions have now caused the deaths of thousands of Americans. There are a whole lot of businesses who do business with China, and maybe that works for them. Good luck, fellas. But I am totally done with buying Chinese anything now. At an individual level, I hope there are many millions who think the same way as I do, and voluntarily choose to not buy Chinese products.
Red China must now pay a price for their behavior. You do not kill Americans with your actions and get off scot-free. We need a little reset with China. I would immediately do the following.
1. Sell Taiwan every weapon system they want and can afford - and then give them plenty more
2. Station a carrier right there in the South fucking China sea, right there in Taiwan.
3. And six months later - recognize Taiwan as an independent country.
Red China must be made to pay a severe, and permanent price for their actions. They can fucking forget tariff relief.
Amen.
RACIST!
The Chinese are the world's largest minority, white man!
So on one hand, coronavirus is not so bad, it's like a bad flu, it's a hoax, what's the big deal, etc.
On the other hand, coronavirus is so terrible that it's worth provoking a war with China over.
Got it.
chem....I've taken the Wuhan coronavirus very seriously, particularly since I live in the People's Republic of NJ, and we have been hammered. Hell chem, I've had some lively debates about how serious KungFlu really is. It is fucking bad. So your first premise is wrong.
Your second statement...well, this is one way to make the Commie fuckers pay a severe, and permanent price. Now the Red Chinese know damned well they'd get their ass handed to them in a straight up fight. Badly. So...risk a war? They don't have the balls to try. And if they did, we would kick their ass.
Jeff doesn't have rational thought. it's best not to try to have lively debates with him unless you like sophistry.
Well, I for one am glad that you are taking it seriously, because it definitely is worse than just a "bad flu".
I don't think risking a war over a virus is a terribly wise idea. The US should be engaging in less military operations around the world, not more.
No, it isn't. A bad flu is 100k dead in the US. We are at 24k with some overpopulation of death counts. They are adding bodies without a test to the daily count totals. Every hospital is admitting this. No other disease or pandemic has counted in this manner.
You really are just a scared human being.
Jesse, do try to stay on topic. We are talking about whether it's a wise idea to provoke war with China over coronavirus. You and I, in a rare moment, seem to agree that that's a bad idea. Why don't you
Perhaps you should take up your complaint with Commenter XY on the matter.
However, we will have tens of thousands more deaths in the coming months even with substantial mitigating measures already having been taken over the past weeks in most areas.
These protective measures have been, and will continue to be, very expensive to the economy of the United States (and most countries) and that cost alone makes SARS-CoV-2 "much more bad" than any flu epidemic in the last 100 years (I carefully miss the 1918 flu with my selection of time!) in the United States.
In recent decades we have not taken anywhere near these precautions against the flu and have had a vaccine fairly widely administered that cover at least some of the strains that were prevalent that year. So, much of the "badness" of recent flu outbreaks in the United States has been muted by much lower cost mitigation strategies.
Ultimately, how inherently "bad", for some definitions of "bad", the virus itself is can probably best determined by the death rate of infected people (something we should be getting better numbers on fairly soon as antibody tests become more widely administered), the rate of lasting injury of those infected, and the R₀ value if there were not mitigating actions taken.
Of course, for other definitions of "bad", SARS-CoV-2 could be considered not bad at all as it will help Social Security stay solvent for a couple more days as it takes out old folks who aren't paying in any longer and are now just taking from the program.
"However, we will have tens of thousands more deaths in the coming months even with substantial mitigating measures already having been taken over the past weeks in most areas."
Right.
He's right this time. The death rate is at 2500/day and still going up.
All part of the Infinite Demands/Limited Resources conundrum. Any of the above could have been funded and ordered by Congress, but weren't.
Why are you hating on THIS president for the way things have always been? Easier to type one name rather than 545?
Jeff. Stay on topic. We arent going to war with China because we defunded the WIHO fucking moron.
I never said that. Why are you lying about me, Jesse?
Illegal alien sex predators raping and murdering our children is a terrible thing too, but you have proclaimed your acceptance of that.
"I don’t think risking a war over a virus is a terribly wise idea."
Nobody who makes such decisions is talking about war, not even the president who brought us the term "truthful hyperbole", and none of XY's enumerated list is likely to come to pass. You know this, but XY provided something which made an easy target for you.
Furthermore, the conflict at hand is not over the virus itself but rather China's immensely irresponsible mishandling of it. I think you know this, too, but it's easier to go after the "coronavirus is so terrible that it’s worth provoking a war with China over" strawman.
Time will tell = none of XY’s enumerated list is likely to come to pass
Pedo Jeffy is a stupid shitweasel. So adjust your expectations accordingly.
He also lies a lot.
Is this like your war with Iran? Go back to having your head in the sand, was better when you were socking as other people.
“it’s a hoax”
I haven’t seen that lie in awhile. Thanks Lying Jeffy!
"And this is their new hoax." - Trump
“And this is their new hoax.” – Trump
So you're BRAGGING about your lies now? Brain-dead and proud of it!
Good job ignoring everything else around that quote. You probably still claim he said Nazis are good people.
That is exactly what he said. Maybe he ought to be more precise with his words if he doesn't want to be misinterpreted.
Psychoticjeff, blaming others for his own misunderstanding
Last thing you want to do with a carrier is tie it down like that. See Guadalcanal and Okinawa for examples.
Plenty of room to move around in the SC sea.
No reason to move immediately to such aggression. The US could simply officially recognize Taiwan as a sovereign nation, the evidence of this being functionally true is overwhelming already. As a sovereign nation begin to push for their inclusion in the UN.
Simple. It's also just recognizing the very real state of things, like US recognizing Jerusalem as the capital (A Trump action I agree with). Moving politics away from gnosticism towards obvious real truths is a good thing.
The problem with that is China will immediately invade. Meaning, the US recognizes Taiwan as an independent country and we have nothing in the area to deter military action.
Call their bluff.
If Taiwan succumbs to PRC aggression it really wasn't a viable nation-state in the first place.
If our carrier is stationed there, it stops them cold.
They can fucking forget tariff relief.
You don't even know who pays import tariffs on Chinese goods, do you sparky?
We buy things from China because it's economically advantageous for us to do so. Google "Comparative advantage" and quit embarrassing yourself.

I dunno, the ATF and DEA aren't paying for their actions. Hell, most budget years they get rewarded.
1) Who? Oh, you mean the CHO! The Chicomasshole Health Organization.
2) Lefties and Chemjeff hardest hit.
3) Aylward is asshole. Canada's finest.
4) If you look closely enough you can see guns pointed at the heads of WHO officials. Erm, I mean CHO. But at least they're diverse right? After all, it's 2015!
5) Tedros must resign.
"Chicomasshole"
Why you gotta bring Boston Hispanics into this?
Still haven't seen a coherent explanation of exactly what it is that Reason is deeming to be Trump's "failure," other than the thoroughly debunked "he said it was a HOAX" narrative and some indecipherable version of "tariffs made the virus worse."
Because Weissmuller knows that someday all this social distancing will be gone and there will be cocktail parties in Georgetown again.
It's a type of Media shibboleth, a way for him to let everyone know he's one of the cool kids too, so please don't forget to invite him the next time you plan a Beltway get-together.

Trump announces United States will freeze funding to WHO, accusing them of “severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus.”
That's the most tragically hilarious part of this whole terrible saga.
Trump spends the month of February downplaying the coronavirus, and now when he needs a convenient scapegoat upon which to blame his own lack of preparedness, here comes along the WHO.
Notice how none of the the Trumpfans responded to this devastating, fact-based takedown of their nonsense?
It certainly is a big basket of cherries.
It fails to report the fate of the Chinese scientists. It fails to report Chinese efforts at scrubbing evidence of virus origins. It parrots lie Trump "hoax" quote. Ok, now I'm yawning. Big yawn.
It's a good timeline. But it is a bias influenced timeline. You can see it in what you pointed out and things like the claim that the checks were held up because they had to print Trump's signature. That's just not true. And the inclusion of the PREDICT claim that leaves out that PREDICT was a temporary program that blew through $198 million, was in Wuhan, and literally failed to spot the pandemic that it was charged with doing.
In the end, the timeline does show there was a lesser response than would have been helpful and that there was downplaying of the potential seriousness of the virus and its spread. If you included bias additions that benefit Trump, it would show a response at about a 6, maybe a 7, on a scale of 1-10. Not great by any means, but not terrible either.
In the end, there is a lot of blame and reassessment to go around. Trump and his administration well included in that as well as the WHO and China.
It would be nice if ONE of the claims could be checked.
THAT is a pile of shit.
Citations would be nice, but a lot of the information can be checked, it just takes leg work.
Nothing in the timeline about allowing the Wuhan New Year's Banquet (40K families) on January 18th, because the official belief was that the possibility of human to human transfer was "limited", even though evidence of such transfer had been found, and hidden, for weeks at that point.
Lots of stuff was left out.
On January First, Chinese officials demanded labs stop testing for the disease, and destroy all samples. Also, eight doctors were detained for "spreading false rumors"
By 4th January, there were already 425 patients in hospital in Wuhan, with cases doubling every week.
On January 14th, The WHO reports that there is no clear evidence of human to human transmission.
From 11-17 January, the CCP held a meeting of important officials in Wuhan. During that period, they claimed that there were no new cases.
The purpose of the WHO is not to promote international socialism and suppress information that might put the CCP in a bad light, especially if doing so endangers millions of people and the economy of the world.
5 million people converged on Wuhan, then left to travel all over the world for New Years celebrations, while China and the WHO suppressed the seriousness of the outbreak. Current information is that obvious evidence of the danger and identity of the disease was known by Chinese authorities for 34 days before they took positive action. They did not just ignore the threat, they actively suppressed information about it.
This should have been an isolated and short-lived outbreak of a new disease in an obscure city in China.
I didn't talk about China's failures because the question I was responding to wasn't about China, it was about Trump's administration. I know it's hard to believe that some people aren't diehard partisans, but I have no argument with the very valid criticisms of China's response or lack thereof or coverup thereof - those criticisms are obviously accurate. But China's failures are neither here nor there when the question is to produce evidence of Trump's failures.
I left out all the international events that didn't directly pertain to the question that was asked, about Trump's actions. It was long enough already.
Why do you think the hoax quote is a lie? He's on video saying it, here, at 1:01: https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/trump-calls-coronavirus-democrats-new-hoax-n1145721

"Notice how none of the the Trumpfans responded to this devastating, fact-based takedown of their nonsense?"
See below for an answer to a pile of shit, lies and unsupported claims
Let's start at the top of this steaming pile of shit:
"March 2017: New Trump administration — focusing DHS on immigration — shuts down department’s modeling of flu pandemics."
No cite, a claim that focusing DHS on immigration is some idiot's guess:
Verdict BULLSHIT!
"May 2017: Trump administration disbands pandemic response team in White House — “no senior administration official is now focused solely on global health security,” Washington Post reports."
Cite hinted at, source usually full of shit, anonymous.
Verdict: BULLSHIT.
"September 2017: Trump administration presented with the Obama-ordered plans for machine able to make 1.5 million N95 respirator masks a day during a pandemic. Machine never funded or built."
Yep, look at that cite.
Verdict: BULLSHIT!
"January-August 2019: Trump administration runs a pandemic wargame called “Crimson Contagion” — modeling the outbreak of an uncontrolled flu pandemic, originating in China."
And?
Verdict; what in hell is that supposed to mean?
"July 2019: CDC epidemiologist position embedded in the Chinese health authority quits, as Trump administration announces it will eliminate the post amid trade war. Move comes as part of a hollowing out of the CDC’s China presence — from 47 staffers at end of Obama era to barely a dozen."
Verdict:
Which side of the tin-foil is supposed to be out?
"FEMA’s National Threat and Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment for 2019 warns of pandemic risk, modeling an influenza outbreak that leads to “a shortage of medical supplies, equipment, beds, and healthcare workers as hospitals are quickly overwhelmed.”
Goody.
Verdict: BULLSHIT!
"August 2019: Contract dispute leaves federal stockpile of ventilators without maintenance, starting in late August through January. When this equipment is later distributed, many ventilators are broken."
You're serious?
"September 2019: Trump administration ends funding for PREDICT — a U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) initiative to support laboratories abroad, including one in Wuhan, China, to be vigilant for viruses with pandemic potential."
Wonderful cite you got there.
Overall verdict:
Emily Ko is
Full.
Of.
Shit.
Thanks. There’s no way I was reading all of her post. Some of these idiots assume none of us actually pay attention to what is going on, while it is going on, and forget things that we’ve been witnessing over the last month/year/years.
turd is famous for posting links without reading them; I learned right quick to quote from them.
If whoever is posting as Ko wants to gripe, I'd suggest we all have enough time on our hands to throw that pile of shit back in his/her face.
I'll take the next 20, someone else cover the lies 21-40, and so forth.
In that lot I covered, there was exactly ZERO actual cites and the exact same number of comments attributed to a person.
someone else cover the lies 21-40, May I suggest responding that all of those indictments against Trump are normal infinite demands/insufficient resources issues that get decide one way or the other when you elect someone's platform. I further suggest that at any point in the past Congress could have emphasized, funded, and enacted legislation to do any of those things, yet the Executive is very limited to do the same.
You assume that every line in there is meant to criticize, eg the part about the Crimson Contagion exercise and wondering "SO?" It's simply a timeline of relevant events, some good, some bad, some that provide context for later events (like the recommendations in late 2017 that came out of the Crimson Contagion exercise). I didn't cite every line but they're all easily verifiable. I'll do your research for you later today when I'm not on my phone and provide the citations you ask for.
Fuck you wall of text
"Tell me what Trump has done wrong! ....Not like that. With less words."
You remind me of the Fear demon, actual size from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
And any media outlet or person refusing to call it the Wuhan virus and going with Covid-19 are playing right into the Chicoms hands.
They're the ones who labelled it that and media outlets (including the Ascot Times (aka New York Times) and CNN) went with it.
Then China cried like the little bitches they are we bent over like Ginger Lynn in a gangbang.
Scientists stopped naming diseases based upon their geographic location right around 1850. Just because you want to invoke racist and xenophobic dog whistles doesn’t mean the rest of us should.
Listen you illiberal, ignorant jackass before you go off on in the Internet calling people 'racists' and using retard language like 'dog whistles' attempting to shut them down at the very least don't be a complete moron about it.
It's probably time to start slapping people like you in the face for making fucken baseless charges of 'racism'. It is YOU and your ilk who poison civil discourse with your astonishing arrogance of stupidity.
1850 eh? Spanish flu, Hong Kong Flu, West Nile, Russian flu, Asian flu etc. The narrative changed because China whined and fuckheads like you obliged.
I mean this with very single fibre in my body: Go fuck yourself.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_virus_species
Fuck. Beat me to it.
It takes a special kind of low man of low character to go on the Internet and call someone they've never met other than based on some comments and opinions a racist or possessing a 'dog whistle' as if they're part of a nefarious underworld of bigots. Even little shits in the media do it and when called out for it scream 'I'm being bullied and getting death threats!'
Faux-Intellectual miscreants who are only good to prey on one line of a comment to misrepresent it to promulgate their left-wing gibberish.
Time and again people like this piece of shit come here and basically emote and project. Like that other idiot Kirlkand.
What they do is tantamount to cowards who spit in another person's face.
I'm gonna go full Sevo on these cunts because that's what they are.
Man, I've been here a long-time and while there have always been fools on these boards, lately the lunatics have come in busting up chairs over heads like the good little violent 'socialist democrats' they are to the point I feel compelled to at least draw a line with these bullying little shits.
Rufus, would you consider using the term "chinks" racist?
Fuck you and your loaded questions.
You're another one patience has run out on.
How is that a loaded question? I am genuinely curious what kind of criteria you have for considering something racist. I am sorry you are so angry these days. It is understandable, We are all frustrated.
1) Damn fricken straight I'm angry these days with all the hypocrisy, over reactions and China cocksuckng going on.
2) You've been here long enough to know what we around here generally think about free speech.
Chink, wop, Mick, spic are all stupid low-hanging fruit standards.
I myself use the Chink virus from time to time not because I'm racist against Chinese people but to make a point about how full of shit the COMMUNISTS are.
Ok. I took my Snicker bar.
I'm better.
You responded to eunuch correctly
Glad you are feeling better, Rufus. I am sending you a virtual hug.
The word "chink" is a derogatory term against ethnic Chinese, and has nothing to do with the concept of communism. Plenty of Chinese aren't communist, and plenty of communists aren't Chinese. When you use the word "chink" you are insulting all of the non-communist Chinese as well as the communist ones. Just consider that for a moment.
Thank you, chemjeff. BTW, good to see you!
Good to see you too. Hope you are staying safe. It has been a rather awful time around my place, unfortunately. Hanging in there.
When you use the word “chink” you are insulting all of the non-communist Chinese as well as the communist ones. Naw, sometimes I am just insulting the chinks directly in front of me but most often I am merely talking with people who are not offended; or if they are offended, are sufficiently civilized to STFU about it.
So solly to put a chink in your armor but

"...I am genuinely curious what kind of criteria you have for considering something racist. .."
You are a lying piece of shit.
Chink??? How is that racist?
My favorite coffee mug got a chink in it just this morning when I dropped it off the counter. Gonna have to go buy a new one now. Thankfully, those slants mass produce em dirt cheap and ship em over here.
I know quite a few Trump supporters personally, among good friends and acquaintances. I would say the majority of them are racist. Definitely not all of them, but more than half for sure. So all the accusations about racism among Trump supporters have a lot of truth to them. The Trump supporters in this comment section also prove that. Now, with that said, you should never assume that just because someone is a Trump supporter, that means he or she is a racist. That would be bigotry that is not much better than the racism. We should treat people as individuals as much as possible.
"I know quite a few Trump supporters personally, among good friends and acquaintances. I would say the majority of them are racist"
You've gotta get better at lying, eunuch.
You don't have any friends.
Whatever make you feel better (other than your favorite pastime of snorting dicks). But I have no problems being friends with people that do not share my views, or even being friends with racists. I do have a problem with assholes, though.
Being a wholly contemptible piece of trash with nothing to offer the world, you have a problem being friends with anybody.
It's a shame you haven't killed yourself yet, eunuch, but that would take more balls than you could ever hope to have
My my, look who's cranky today.
Lol
No, I'm in a good mood.
Eunuch gets what he deserves, as do you
I don't know if the majority are racist, but quite a few are. At least in my experience, it isn't the overt in-your-face racist hate, but it is casual racism, basically treating other groups in a way that they would never themselves tolerate being treated.
True story: a conservative family member of mine, heard a song on the radio that she liked, wanted to know who was the singer. She found out, also discovered that the singer was black. Her response: "Well it's about time they started producing some good music." That is a racist thing to say but it wasn't hateful or mean. It was just insensitive. That is the type of thing I am talking about, anyway.
Casual racism, meaning not letting words have meaning and not caring about PC crap? Because I've always found intention of words has more implication than the word choice actually made.
Likewise you probably are completely fine with races self segregating on campus as that is one of the goals your ilk tend to have.
Jesse, go find someone else to bother. Your schtick is tiresome.
What. Pointing out your woke hypocrisy? Or pointing out your sophistry?
Your continual need to "win" at any costs.
Your continual habit of trying to change the subject when you don't like where an argument is going. Like above - when I don't conform to your notion of what constitutes racism, you try to change the subject to college student segregation on campus. WTF.
Your refusal to engage in good faith argumentation.
Your constant virtue signaling around here to bash the "correct" people while letting even more odious people get away with contemptible comments. Have you ever once criticized Nardz or Shithead for making explicitly violent threats? Do you think that might even once get you to say "hey, why don't you tone it down with the murder porn fantasizing"? Oh, but I say something mean about Trump. You'll bitch at me all day if I do that.
You're on a team, and that team is pushing an agenda, and it doesn't matter what the facts or the logic or the principles say, you are going to continue pushing. It just gets tiresome.
Looks like psychoticjeff is butthurt, though I'd guess that is an existential condition for him
Oh, hi Nardz. Back from your murder spree already?
Have you stopped fucking chimpanzees yet, Jeff?
So, we have eunuch and Lying Jeffy admitting they hang out with racists
Makes a lot of sense. It’s projection.
"I don’t know if the majority are racist, but quite a few are."
Lefties are nearly universally racist; ask 'em about racial quotas.
After reading all of the posts above I was going to make this same statement, but you beat me too it. Somehow "saying something mean" is worse than actually taking a job, or a position at a school away from an individual who did more to earn it. One grievance hurts someone's feelings while another can rob someone of a lifetime of lost earnings. In addition in the first instance, as the offended party you have something you can do in return, maybe say something back to them, cease talking to them, call out their insensitivity among a peer group they care about. In the second instance you have no recourse at all. You lost the deal, through no fault of your own, by being born a specific way. I'll take incidental racism of people saying a rude thing here or there over institutionalized racism any day.
I bet your racist Trump friends would love for you to explain to them how racist they are. I bet that goes over well.
Um excuse me, but your articulate, well-thought reply obfuscated my totally-mature, very hilarious word-play. How inconsiderate.
It is always amazing watching people lie about outgroups. Especially when the person is generally one who attacks people for calling out groups.
I mean you literally accuse all Trump supporters of racism because of one person in this thread and your mythical set of outgroup friends.
You're totally not lying.
Why is it so hard to believe that there may be Trump supporters out there who are racists?
I have no trouble at all believing there are Trump supporters out there who are racists. No group in society is entirely free of racists.
But it's been conspicuous for years, decades even, that "racist" is the left's go-to general purpose epithet, used reflexively in circumstances where race isn't even involved, or even where the alleged "racism" consists of the refusal to racially discriminate.
Who knows what people on the left even mean by "racist" these days, beyond that they don't like somebody or something?
It used to be that the 21st century version of a racist was winning an argument with a leftist. Now it's not sufficiently agreeing with a leftist.
He didnt imply some dipshit. There are racists in every group.
"you literally accuse all Trump supporters of racism"
This is your lie, Jesse. Just own up to it.
It's like psychoticjeff doesn't realize other people can see what's written
Especially in an ideologically either/or framwork. They might as well just say "Everyone else is racist except me." That, at least, would be an honest estimation or projection of their beliefs rather than displacing their delusions of grandeur on their peers or some unsuspecting straw man.
"He's not racist, he hates everybody equally... especially spics." if not humorous is at least honest. "A self-evaluating individual and/or a significant portion of the population honestly has no racial, cultural, national, religious, or gender biases against any other portion of the population intentional or other."? That's just stupid
So all the accusations about racism among Trump supporters have a lot of truth to them.
The existence or presence of racism among Trump supporters isn't an issue and never has been. The issue is the presumed or professed lack of racism in the opposition. The funny thing is, idiots keep repeating it over and over and over like the average person still believes it or can't see through it. It's like they think that if they put their racism on somebody else, nobody will figure it out: "I don't mean to sound like a racist Trump supporter but, how are black people supposed to show IDs when they vote?"
Thanks for admitting you have a bunch of racist friends. Maybe it says more about you than a bunch of people you’ve never met?
"I know quite a few Trump supporters personally, among good friends and acquaintances. I would say the majority of them are racist. Definitely not all of them, but more than half for sure."
So far, so good. None of us can definitively disprove your personal experience, even if others might have had very different experiences. Unfortunately, you proceeded to this:
"So all the accusations about racism among Trump supporters have a lot of truth to them."
There's a fundamental rule of thumb: The plural of 'anecdote' isn't 'data'. Subsequent sentences in your post don't make up for that baseless leap of reasoning.
There is no racial bigotry here. I do not look down on niggers kikes wops or greesers, in my eyes your all equally worthless
God, racists are such big fucking babies. I get called the worst kind of shit on this website and I don't pitch a fucking fit over it. Poor you. Get over yourself. I want you to feel better, whiny bitch. Go watch a Dear Leader video. I recommend this one where he hits on an 11 year old.
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/video/2016/oct/13/trump-makes-inappropriate-remarks-about-10-year-old-girl-video
You get called worst because you deserve it. You're nothing but a degenerate coward. I would love to meet you and see you say that to my face.
You're not a good person. Period.
That is, you come hear to fling shit at people and then scamper off.
And then you have the balls to claim we're 'whiny bitches' for not accepting unfalsifiable assertions.
You're a rat.
Look at me: A rat.
“and I don’t pitch a fucking fit over it.”
Your lack of self awareness is amazing.
But does he TOUCH 10-year-old girls inappropriately on video? Because I'm pretty sure I've seen Vice President Biden do so. Creepy Uncle Joe cannot, simply cannot, keep his hands off women of any age. Sure, in public he keeps it "safe" by only touching shoulders, kissing necks, and sniffing hair, but it's been reported that in private he may sexually assault women. Given his creepy touching in public, it's not at all hard to believe.
Good. It’s about time everyone came to the proper conclusion that beating down marxists is always the correct course of action. Let them live in fear of the consequences of their seditious actions.
It isn't surprising to me that you call someone a retard, yet display a total lack of reading comprehension. The commentor said "Scientists stopped naming diseases based upon their geographic location", which they did. Scientists do not call the "Spanish flu" the Spanish flu, it is H1N1 Influenza, for example. All of your other examples also have proper scientific names. You really need to rethink your life.
Scientists stopped naming diseases based upon their geographic location right around 1850.
The insistence on "Wuhan virus", "Chinese coronavirus" etc seems silly to me, but no, "scientists" have done no such thing. See Spanish Flu, Ebola, MERS, and probably a shit ton of other examples.
I'm not sure it's silly, though I can see why some may see it that way ('I'm in the middle), in that it was originally called, as one can assert, this and no one with a properly calibrated mind thought it to be racist until the CCP propaganda machine tried to distract from what was obviously a problem of their own doing.
In this way, I think it's fair to insist on it because the reason for moving from it isn't rooted in anything scientific but rather as part of a campaign of propaganda.
I could be wrong but that's how I'm perceiving it.
https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/viruses/types.htm
It doesn't mention anything hear about calling the coronavirus the ching-chong slanty eyed virus, racist. Why have they not received updated information from whatever temp is running the CDC?
Naming Influenza Viruses
CDC follows an internationally accepted naming convention for influenza viruses. This convention was accepted by WHO in 1979 and published in February 1980 in the Bulletin of the World Health Organization, 58(4):585-591 (1980) (see A revision of the system of nomenclature for influenza viruses: a WHO Memorandum pdf icon[854 KB, 7 pages]external icon). The approach uses the following components:
The antigenic type (e.g., A, B, C, D)
The host of origin (e.g., swine, equine, chicken, etc.). For human-origin viruses, no host of origin designation is given. Note the following examples:
(Duck example): avian influenza A(H1N1), A/duck/Alberta/35/76
(Human example): seasonal influenza A(H3N2), A/Perth/16/2019
Geographical origin (e.g., Denver, Taiwan, etc.)
Strain number (e.g., 7, 15, etc.)
Year of collection (e.g., 57, 2009, etc.)
For influenza A viruses, the hemagglutinin and neuraminidase antigen description are provided in parentheses (e.g., influenza A(H1N1) virus, influenza A(H5N1) virus)
The 2009 pandemic virus was assigned a distinct name: A(H1N1)pdm09 to distinguish it from the seasonal influenza A(H1N1) viruses that circulated prior to the pandemic.
When humans are infected with influenza viruses that normally circulate in swine (pigs), these viruses are call variant viruses and are designated with a letter ‘v’ (e.g., an A(H3N2)v virus).
There are a bunch of stains named after the region.
And your 1850 clam is bull shit.
If you argued in good faith and not like a passive aggressive twit, maybe it would be productive but you're the one that acts like a complete disingenuous fool.
Passive aggressive? Hardly. You’re the one arguing people who don’t use [Ching Chong] Wuhan virus are “playing into ChiCom hands.” How does using a descriptive term that actual scientists use (the dreaded COVID-19 designation) play into China’s hands, whiny bitch?
It's my opinion and has NOTHING TO DO WITH RACISM ASSHOLE.
They only started using AFTER China complained.
It's racist and xenophobic to correctly assert that the virus originated in Wuhan, China?
And the Wuhan virus is how everyone was referring to it right up until their Commie overlords told em to knock it off. It only became racist once all the woke people stopped using it.
West Nile virus?
Spanish flu?
Ebola fever?
Lassa Fever?
Hantavirus? (including Black Creek Canal virus, New York orthohantavirus, Monongahela virus)
MERS?
Zika? Its name comes from the Ziika Forest of Uganda, where the virus was first isolated in 1947.
I love the claim of dog whistles. How come the only people who hear dog whistles are the people claiming such dog whistling is occurring?
If you hear the dog whistle, it means you're a dog.
So either a shitty metaphor, or the people screaming the loudest about dog whistles are the racists.
Socialist, psychoticjeff, eunuch...
I wouldn't insult dogs by association with the above, but I guess they've gotta aspire to something
It's a bullshit metaphor as it's attempts to describe a situation that doesn't actually exist. And yes, the greatest irony is the ones screaming the loudest tend to be the racists.
The only racists I've ever known that hide behind elaborate language and grad lofty words are leftists. The right sides brand of 'racist' tend to wear that shit on their sleeves.
I believe Malcolm X was one somewhat contemporary figure that noted as much. Hell, even Bush (or his speech writer, anyway) noted the soft bigotry of low expectations.
I suppose what the left has really been saying is that they like their racism to be like an iron glove wrapped in velvet. Sure, it hits hard but at least it's pretty and soft to the touch.
Who knew Ebola existed in 1850!

"Scientists stopped naming diseases based upon their geographic location right around 1850."
A dispassionately objective skimming of the content of your posts here would lead a sensible person to the conclusion that you cannot possibly be so stupid and uninformed as to believe that. The statement is also clearly not offered as an attempt at humor. The only remaining reasonable conclusion is that you've simply lied. Worse, it's not even a "good" lie - it's embarrassingly easy to refute, as many already have.
Even Bill Maher, of all people, completely destroys your statement, as well as the transparent motivation for it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEfDwc2G2_8
So, your foolish lie today had already been addressed by a comedian who is so left-leaning that he previously hoped for the economy to crash solely to thwart Trump's re-election bid. Your stupid lie fits very cleanly into that category which physicist Wolfgang Pauli famously described as "not even wrong". The last thing you should remember when your head hits the pillow tonight, and the first thing on your mind when your eyes pop open in the morning, is that you post such silly lies on the internet that nobody could possibly take you seriously - a condition which undoubtedly afflicts you in real life as well.
So the Ebola virus, named after the Ebola river in Africa wreaked its havoc in 1849?
It was actually very recently that WHO made this their position, largely based on the complaints they received about MERS (Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome) in 2012. I believe MERS was the last to officially be named for a place. Not so long ago.
"...we bent over like Ginger Lynn in a gangbang."
This comment assumes everyone at Reason is familiar with this actress and her performance in this...uh, romantic comedy. You might have to explain your tastes in adult entertainment to us, Rufus.
What was once contemporary is now vintage.
Maybe I shoulda gone with Seka or Hyapatia Lee.
Why would the media label the virus as the “Wuhan virus” [your term, not anybody elses] when actual scientists don’t call it that and it’s not descriptive or useful as a designation, hunh racist?
Then China cried like the little bitches they are we bent over like Ginger Lynn in a gangbang.

China itself was referring to it as such and the media led by NYT and CNN ran with it. Once again, because you're a lying scumbag and of low character, it was AFTER China, in an effort to control the narrative, complained as a tool of propaganda to...fool retards like you who fall for it because you're remedial naifs. Wuhan in the Hubei province ==> Wu Hu Flu.
Yeah, but they’ve basically wiped the disease out from their country while I sit at home and tell my boss that I’m working very, very hard. How come a dictatorship of a proletariat is able to handle this situation and the greatest free market economy in the world mucks it up and becomes the epicenter of a modern plague. Something doesn’t quite fit in the Ayn Rand Howard Roarkian Model of Trains Falling Apart in a Society Full of Commies Model.
Chinese communism is vastly superior to American plutocracy. They at least know how to get big things done on a national level.

They are good at public mobilization. Americans do better when the actions of the individual are decisive.
Yep, they were so good at filling the cremation furnaces in Wuhan that they broke six of the thirty.
Well, sure. You want a hundred million dead, stat, Chinese communists are your go-to guys.

Bottom-feeding scumbags like you shouldn't be silenced; you should shout your stupidity to high-heaven. Brag about how idiotic you are!
This is a joke question, right? Otherwise your argument is that we need a government who is willing to imprison, torture, and kill its own people in order to avoid things like a virus spread.
Sometimes you have to kill 100 million people to save a few lives.
Meh... I’m not willing to go that far. It’s all this crowing about how free markets and capitalism are the greatest things ever— Notwithstanding some notable counterfactuals lying around.
So your position is just to sacrifice the best because of the lack of perfect?
You're assuming a logical response; forget it.
"...Notwithstanding some notable counterfactuals lying around."
Which you, somehow, can't find to cite, asshole.
"government who is willing to imprison, torture, and kill its own people in order to avoid things like a virus spread."
No need to go that far. Places like China and Korea are guided by the spiritual and civic values of Confucianism. I don't think Americans have the will or ability to adopt Confucianism. They dig individualism, Liberalism, democracy.
Um, yeah. I don't even know how to respond to this.
"I don’t even know how to respond to this."
That's to be expected. You don't know what you're talking about. Chinese culture and other Asian cultures are different from those in the West. They tend to be more group oriented, whether nation, or family. Some day you may have the chance to go there and see for yourself.
LOL! I love your quick jump to condescension. So mature.
Anyway, I completely understand the cultural dynamic that you are referring to. That's not the confusion. The confusion is what you have stated is almost irrelevant to anything being discussed here. So, unless you want to clear that up, I will assume you don't know what you are talking about.
I don't feel I have to conform to the terms of discussion that others here follow. I'm glad you understand the cultural dynamic I was going on about. Maybe you can explain this dynamic to others in terms they will be able to accept.
Wow. Impressive deflection. BYODB is right, you are a non sequitur.

Um, yeah. I don’t even know how to respond to this.
Of course you do!
mtrueman|8.30.17 @ 1:42PM|#
“Spouting nonsense is an end in itself.”
Since non sequitur is your thing, a response should be easy since it doesn't have to be relevant or even coherent.
"Places like China and Korea are guided by the spiritual and civic values of Confucianism."
I cannot believe that you are actually capable of that level of cognitive dissonance. Next time you go over, try to spend some time with openly ethnic Uighurs before they're all gone. The Uighurs have been getting the Chinese government's flavor of "Confucianism" good and hard.
There weren't that many Uighurs in Wuhan last time I was there. I think some hashish dealers down by the river side. Not many Tibetans in Wuhan, either. Check the market places, and you might find them where dubious medicines are sold. Powdered deer horn and the like.
Uighurs are Muslims. Confucianism isn't a big part of their lives. Communist apparatchiks are atheists, Confucianism is not a big part of their lives, either. Its emphasis is on loyalty to family and state, and it's one of the reasons why typical Chinese put so much stock in having an elder son to pass on the family name and family responsibilities - maintaining ancestor's graves etc. Islam is about worshipping god, communism, worship of the state.
Christianity, Islam, and Communism are not deeply held beliefs of the Chinese people. For that, look to Confucianism and the writings in the I Ching, the book of changes. These inform all aspects of life and thought in China, from how to prepare a meal (ie the correct way to harmoniously mix the five spices in accordance with your particular health needs) to your obligations to family and nation.
Koreans are more likely to follow neo confucianism, a variation dating back some 500 years, but it's very similar, especially from a Western perspective. Followers of confucianism or neo confucianism are more inclined to sacrifice themselves for the benefit of the nation than Liberals in the west who put more stock in individual autonomy and independence. That's what makes the Asian response to the pandemic more effective than that of the US, I believe.
I should have been more clear. My prior post was intended to refute the idea that China, inasmuch as its government implements the nation's policies, is _not_ "guided by the spiritual and civic values of Confucianism".
The Chinese government is communist. The Chinese people are not. They believe in things like sacrificing for the common good and similar ideas that should ring falsely in the ears of Western Liberals like ourselves.

I have to disagree: https://www.fastcompany.com/90417884/america-remains-the-most-generous-place-in-the-world-but-barely
Plenty of Americans are not only capable of altruism, they actively engage in it. I would argue that the prior link (and it's easy to find corroborating analyses elsewhere) strongly implies that it is a part of American culture. Naturally, we could easily find counterexamples in the US, but the same is true for China. For every US businessman caught selling peanut butter tainted with bird droppings, there's a Chinese business man caught selling milk tainted with melamine. We could play that game all day, but it wouldn't tell us anything useful. You've apparently been to China - have you been to the US?
Also, a minor point: Depending on which meaning you attach to the term "Liberal" (it's frequently misused in the US as a synonym for "Progressive"), it's quite possible that it does not accurately describe me.
You're wasting your keystrokes on the noted bullshitter and sophist mtrueman.
That scumbag has neither the ability nor the intent to post an honest response to any comment.
As far as can be discerned, s/he runs a failing blog and hopes posting here gets a mistaken click on the name and doubles the weekly audience.

Off the cuff, I'd say it's about 50/50 on worthwhile exchanges here with him. I'm willing to give most people a chance. Even Kirkland occasionally posts something that isn't abominable...but...don't ask me for an example...
“There weren’t that many Uighurs in Wuhan last time I was there.”
You spend a lot of time looking for them? Are they paraded around the city for all to see when they are there? How many of the 11 million people that live there do you know?
I’m gonna make a guess that either you won’t answer these questions, or you’ll expose yourself as full of shit by trying.
In what is a rare honest mtrueman statement, the majority population in Wuhan is Han Chinese.
Get west of Chendu, and you find the part of "China" which is native Uighur territory occupied (now) by the Han.
The rest of his/her rambling is some 'spiritual' interpretations of local beliefs which really might be accurate.
If you asked the right people.
"You spend a lot of time looking for them?"
Not much. I still had my hashish purchased from the Uighur gangs of Shanghai, thank goodness.
"Christianity, Islam, and Communism are not deeply held beliefs of the Chinese people."
No great surprise, this claim, is total and complete bullshit absent a long and involved definition of "the Chinese people".
Head west and try to get a pork chop, dipshit.
If you were looking for an ideology that Chinese people broadly follow, it wouldn't be Christianity, Islam, communism, or even Buddhism. It would be Confucianism. This is the truth you find so painful to accept.
I made a similar tongue in cheek claim a while back, but it turns out the Chinese were just using one of the oldest moves in the playbook: they straight up lied about everything.
I bet the trains run on time too.
"wiped the disease out from their country"
like with a cloth?
This popcorn tastes like somebody jizzed all over it.
It's easier to wipe out a disease when you can just shoot infected people in the head and bury them in mass graves.
Maybe like the cows with hoof-and-mouth in Hud? Kill all the cows that *might* have been exposed to try to prevent spread beyond the herd.
I'm also not going to be surprised if we someday discover that a bunch of dissidents in Iran "died" of COVID and got buried in mass graves there.
Since Mexico has like 30 times less cases than the US do you think they’ll start paying for the border wall? That might make sense for them.
Sorry, that can't happen. Israel is the only country allowed to have a wall.
I'm super interested in that. From my friend in Mexico, Mexico isn't doing very much as far as government enforcement to prevent spread. He may be wrong, I may be wrong, if so please let me know.
But if they aren't doing much, and they aren't having much issue what is the difference?
That's kind of my major issue with Coronavirus analysis: the data is just too weird and incomplete at this moment to say much about it.
Taiwan has a very legitimate beef with the WHO and China.
OTOH they aren't using that as an excuse for or a diversion from their own failures. Because they have been stunningly successful. Because they have a public health function and were paying attention rather than dismissing it.
It's simple. The calculus is straightforward moving forward.
Do the opposite of what China and the WHO says. That's basically what Korea did.
China chose to make this bed. Let them lie in it.
"Do the opposite of what China and the WHO says. That’s basically what Korea did."
Korea took the virus very seriously. Their response was much closer to China/Taiwan than America's as I understand. They closed schools, curtailed travel, tested, and discouraged public gatherings, very similar to China. Although China's version was undoubtedly more hard core and draconian.
What gave you the idea that Korea was doing the opposite of China? Is that FOX, Trump or somewhere else?
Ah, so since the US response wasn't up to your standard, the US has no basis to critique the WHO and China? Interesting logic.
" the US has no basis to critique the WHO and China? Interesting logic."
The US is responsible for its own public health. Not the UN or China. What Trump, the Democrats or the media have to say about China and the UN is a diversion or misdirection.
This is a bizarrely naive position to take. Why are things so mutually exclusive in your mind. Can't the US be responsible and yet also have suffered in that responsibility because of the actions of China and the WHO?
What actions of China and the WHO? They don't set American policy and shouldn't be held responsible for American policy.
You're kidding, right? Are you just trolling, or is this a serious comment?
When you are provided with bad information and when you are lied to, it makes it hard to then take that information and create an effective picture and response.
"it makes it hard to then take that information and create an effective picture and response."
Korea managed to mount an appropriate and effective response to the virus in spite of whatever mysterious actions you are accusing the UN and China of perpetrating.
And the vast majority of the rest of the world didn't mount an effective defense. Maybe Korea having direct information on the subject much sooner than everyone else played a significant role. And maybe Korea's distrust of China and the WHO, which granted, we should have had, also played a role.
Question, do you go out of your way to cover like this for people and entities that you don't like?
You’re trying to have a complex conversation with someone with a very simple mind.
It's almost like 50% of the actual subject matter streams in and 50% is this weird subject matter that only he is privy to.
Poorly coded bot
"Poorly coded bot"
I don't think so.
A smug sophist, convinced by Mommy of his 'cleverness', and stupid enough to ignore the rest of the world pointing out that he's full of shit.
" Maybe Korea having direct information on the subject much sooner than everyone else played a significant role. And maybe Korea’s distrust of China and the WHO, which granted, we should have had, also played a role. "
I don't believe any of this played a role. Korea, like China, took the virus seriously. They've both dealt with the SARS virus within memory and were prepared to act. I don't deny their measures were draconian, especially judged by America's party hardy standards.
"Question, do you go out of your way to cover like this for people and entities that you don’t like?"
I like the Chinese people. Koreans, too. Don't mistake me. I didn't mean to give the impression that I didn't. Their governments, not so much. Their viruses, even less.
The public health caused by a virus formed largely from wet markets that China and the WHO allowed to reopen again... totally isolated. yeap.
I have yet to see a Trumpbot rail about the CDC. Which failed and is still failing utterly. And which we control 100%.
This is all an excuse to ensure no accountability for our own failures - while diverting voter attention to them furriners in shitholes. It is truly doubly scummy.
Because you are the epitome of cognitive dissonance. Many have pointed out the failure of the CDC and FDA dummy.
I've yet to see that cowardly piece of lefty shit JFree apologize for his fake predictions, which failed and are still failing utterly.
Stuff your PANIC!!! flag up your ass, stick first. And sit on it.
The CDC screwed the pooch when it came up to coming up with a test for this thing at the very beginning. They had their one idea, wouldn't let anyone else try anything else, and then their one idea fell flat on its face.
"Taiwan has a very legitimate beef with the WHO and China."
What is it, exactly? Taiwan isn't a member of the WHO or the UN, as I understand. They don't have an embassy in Washington or any other place of significance since the US and the rest of the UN recognized Beijing as being the only capital of China. Things were different before the Nixon trip to China. The island even had a seat on the security council, the one where China is sitting today.
Didn''t Taiwan follow the very pro-active model that China and South Korea set down?
Taiwan is not a member of the WHO BECAUSE of China. China in fact actively prevents Taiwan from getting information about a lot of things - including this disease - or for that matter anything from the WHO.
Taiwan does public health. They aren't copying anybody. Not China or Korea. They just pay attention, take it seriously, and know what they are doing. They were screening flights coming from Wuhan by Jan1 - before the Chinese even admitted the existence of the coronavirus.
Rather than admit that other places are doing well - despite actual hindrances; we prefer to play snowflake victim and blame someone else
"Taiwan is not a member of the WHO BECAUSE of China. "
Because Taiwan is not a nation. It's a province of China. Even the Taiwanese don't claim the island is a nation, not even the nationalists, at least officially. This is part of an on going squabble since Beijing was internationally recognized as being the Capital of China, conferring diplomatic legitimacy to the communist regime after Nixon's about face, over what the status of Taiwan is, or what to call the island, 'Chinese Taipei' is the still name the athletes compete under in international sports events, I believe. I has nothing to do with how Taiwan chose to respond to the virus.
Oh, give it a rest. Taiwan is "a province of China" like every other neighbor China plans to conquer: Not historically, but aspirationally. It's spent more time independent of China than subjugated by it.
It's an independent nation, in all functional respects except for recognition by countries China has intimidated.
Taiwan is not a member of the United Nations because that status was revoked by the international community in the wake of the Nixon visit. After the diplomatic upheaval following the visit, Beijing was internationally recognized as the only capital of China and Taiwan merely a province. This has nothing to do corona virus.
"It’s spent more time independent of China than subjugated by it. "
I suppose this is true to an extent. Their independence is informal. If Taiwan tried to formalize the relationship, declaring independence, for example, I can see that leading to a heap of trouble. Taiwanese are smart enough to take full advantage of their de facto independence foregoing the luxury of making it de jure. (Pardon me if I am making a muck of the Latin.)
Excuse me for caring more about the fact that they ARE an independent nation, than the fact that numerous countries have been intimidated into not admitting it.
The situation IS quite parallel to Israel's capital, Jerusalem. It's been their capital from the start, whether or not other countries were acknowledging it. Nothing horrible happened when we decided to acknowledge reality.
Nothing horrible is likely to happen if we recognize the independence of Taiwan, either. If China was up to invading them, they would have already. Just being recognized isn't going to prompt an invasion.
"Excuse me for caring more about the fact that they ARE an independent nation"
I already agreed with you. Taiwan is de facto (in fact) independent. They formulate their own foreign policy. Their government is separate from that of mainland China.
"Nothing horrible is likely to happen if we recognize the independence of Taiwan, either."
America recognizes the legitimacy of the communist regime in Beijing. So does most of the rest of the world. I think even the Vatican has switched over from recognizing the RoC to the PRC. Even if the US reversed itself again and had the PRC removed from the UN and had Taiwan take its place, this would do nothing to stop the virus or alleviate the pandemic.
"If China was up to invading them, they would have already."
Why would China invade? That would upset a mutually beneficial relationship. As long as Taiwan doesn't formally declare independence, something they haven't done in more than 70 years, and are not likely to do so now to satisfy American frustrations over their inadequate response to the pandemic.
"Even if the US reversed itself again and had the PRC removed from the UN and had Taiwan take its place, this would do nothing to stop the virus or alleviate the pandemic."
Why would we substitute one lie for another? Taiwan is an independent nation, and so is the PRC. They should both be recognized. It was about as silly when we were recognizing the government of Taiwan as the legitimate government in exile of mainland China, as it is today when we pretend that Taiwan is just a "renegade" province of China.
"Why would China invade? ... As long as Taiwan doesn’t formally declare independence," Talk about answering your own question.
"Taiwan is an independent nation"
We've been through this before. Informally, yes, it's independent. Formally, no, it's a province of China.
"They should both be recognized."
I agree. Both North Korea and South Korea are internationally recognized, (though neither under those particular names) both have membership in the UN. If North and South Korea can do it why not the Chinese? My answer is size. The Koreas are roughly equal in size and strength. There is a vast disparity between PRC and RoC. I figure that's why.
I don't foresee any Chinese invasion of Taiwan. The relationship they enjoy now is mutually beneficial. An invasion would certainly disrupt that.

It's informal, I assure you. Formally independent nations will have embassies and consulates etc. They will have a seat at the UN and its organizations. Taiwan has none of this. It's a province of China.
You're confusing reality and formality. They have the reality of independence, they lack 'formal' independence only in the sense of it not being acknowledged by other countries.
But their being a province of China is neither formal nor informal, it's fiction.
"But their being a province of China is neither formal nor informal, it’s fiction."
Not true, the Taiwanese themselves (at least the KMT types) have always seen Taiwan as a part of China, a province in fact. What surprised me was learning that the same bunch also see 'Outer Mongolia' as another province of China, the same piece of real estate the rest of the world calls Republic of Mongolia. Taiwanese maps show all sorts of fictions I'm sure you'd find delightful.
"You’re confusing reality and formality."
No, I'm pointing out the difference between independence in fact and independence in law. It's enough of a difference to make it possible for a Taiwanese business person to open a factory on the mainland, but prevent the same business person from marching into an olympic stadium under a flag the communists disapprove of.

Declaring yourself a victor while continuing to quietly bury bodies is successful in your book? Reopening wet markets that are the origins of many of these viruses is successful?
Or are you saying the blatant propaganda you've fallen for is successful?
You don't even know how to read do you? Or do you just not understand the difference between Taiwan and China cuz you're too fucking stupid or racist?
Oh I completely understand. I also noticed you ran away yesterday when I provided links against your bullshit chinese propaganda.
A scientific article in Nature magazine is 'Chinese propaganda'? Which is countered by a couple links to newspapers?
You failed in school didn't you. You never figured out the difference between a legitimate source and a parrot. so to you everything you don't like is 'propaganda' - even though propaganda is all you ever link to.
"A scientific article in Nature magazine is ‘Chinese propaganda’? Which is countered by a couple links to newspapers?"
So, you pathetic piece of shit, you ran away and now you're hoping to arm-wave an excuse?
Keep it up; your rep grows.
Considering the economy needs a serious reboot...I say block all chinese imports and "force" American companies to re-launch production within the country. After all, china merely steals our intellectual property and sells it back to us at cheaper prices and horrid quality. We need to return to Buy American. #MAGAforever
"I say block all chinese imports and “force” American companies to re-launch production within the country. "
That would only compound America's troubles. Americans are simply not as productive Chinese when it comes to making things. The Chinese advantage doesn't come so much from America's IP but Chinese hard work and dedication. There's also the Chinese tolerance for the dirty difficult and dangerous that Americans tend to shy away from.
IP is still America's strong point. Whether it's the engineer from Stanford working quantum computing or the Gender Studies maven from Brown who's writing a tv series that will take the world by storm, Americans have a capacity to create and innovate that can't be stolen, even by Chinese.
Americans are simply not as productive Chinese when it comes to making things. The Chinese advantage doesn’t come so much from America’s IP but Chinese hard work and dedication.
HAHAHA. No.
I do like how you admit the United States relies on intellectual property rights for our economy, and you even straight up note that the Chinese are stealing those products.
So, when someone steals your competitive advantage do you really still have a competitive advantage? Why would we tolerate widespread theft on the part of our trade partners?
Oh, right, because we're a bunch of NIMBY that want pollution safely oversea's. Nixon was pretty brilliant opening trade with China while also creating the EPA, huh?
"and you even straight up note that the Chinese are stealing those products."
I have no problem with that. TS Eliot said mediocre poets imitate. Top flight versifiers like himself steal.
"So, when someone steals your competitive advantage do you really still have a competitive advantage?"
As long as Americans are incentivized to innovate, tinker and originate, I wouldn't bother about that. America's competitive advantage is creative humans, and they are not being stolen. Bought, maybe but that's another matter.
Americans have an aversion to some kinds of work and industry that the Chinese are more willing to do, and for less money. That makes them more productive. If Americans want to match Chinese productivity in making things, that means more robots. Jobs will be incidental.
Except what you're talking about is a Chinese poet literally stealing a T.S. Elliot poem and selling it was a Wong Fu poem. So, not imitation at all. Why can't American businesses steal intellectual property without repercussions? After all, in your view it's quite productive.
Let me guess. You acknowledge that intellectual property rights incentivize innovation while also thinking that it being stolen has no effect on the incentives.
And for the record:
One of the surest tests is the way in which a poet borrows. Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal; bad poets deface what they take, and good poets make it into something better, or at least something different. The good poet welds his theft into a whole of feeling which is unique, utterly different than that from which it is torn; the bad poet throws it into something which has no cohesion. A good poet will usually borrow from authors remote in time, or alien in language, or diverse in interest.
I like mine better.
And I still have no problem Chinese stealing intellectual property.
"After all, in your view it’s quite productive."
Stealing is productive. It cuts out the entire process of research and development enabling the thief to jump right into production. This should be obvious.
Mine is the actual T.S. Elliot quote. I take it he was talking about you with this bit:
...the bad poet throws it into something which has no cohesion.
William Blake is my fave. I think it's really neat that he would compose his poems by directly engraving them on copper, mirrorwise.
I'll bet mommy told you that was really clever! Right?
Or did you just decide to make an ass of yourself again?
A lot of hot air in the article, but it's also noteworthy to mention that South Korea is not mentioned, but they, like Taiwan, were very quick to take the pandemic very seriously and followed the Chinese model to varying degrees. So if America had adopted the Chinese approach quicker instead of partying at Mardi Gras things might have turned out better.
More welding of doors needed.
The Chinese don't fuck around with this sort of thing. They did for the SARS virus a few years and they know where it got them. Koreans also can be very hard core. Their ideas of society and one's obligations and responsibilities are nearly as influenced by notions of the Enlightenment (Liberty, rights, individualism, the whole barrel of monkeys) as we are in the West.
You give very concerning passes to authoritarianism, violence, and murder. It's almost hard to believe at this point.
"You give very concerning passes to authoritarianism, violence, and murder. "
China is about as authoritarian as they come. They have a death penalty and aren't shy about using it. They lock people up on bogus charges, and all manner of bad practices. I never attempted to deny any of that. I'm pointing out that they took the virus very seriously and were prepared to handle it, albeit heavy handedly.
Or, alternatively, the Chinese government just lied about how they handled it from the get go. Having absolute control of information distribution in all of China and abroad tends to have that effect, one might note.
What exactly is your point? China good because of the heavy handed approach? America bad because we didn't impose a heavy handed approach? It's getting time that you actually have a point.
Mtrueman doesn't have points. They have admitted in the past that they're just fond of non-sequitur needling.
That would explain it.
A lot of hot air in the article, but it’s also noteworthy to mention that South Korea is not mentioned, but they, like Taiwan, were very quick to take the pandemic very seriously and followed the Chinese model to varying degrees. China took the virus seriously. As did Korea. You can read my original comment again if you didn't get what my point was the first time around:

"The Chinese don’t fuck around with this sort of thing."
Their stages of response started with "conceal", followed by "deny", and then "diminish", before they got around to the part where they "don’t fuck around with this sort of thing".
"Their ideas of society and one’s obligations and responsibilities are nearly as influenced by notions of the Enlightenment (Liberty, rights, individualism, the whole barrel of monkeys) as we are in the West."
Surely you meant to write "are not nearly". Individualism in particular is not a strong aspect of Eastern cultures in general, including the cultures within China (it's not all Han Chinese). Broadly speaking, harmony is much more valued. The government has an especially jaundiced view of individualism and liberty.
"Their stages of response started with “conceal”, followed by “deny”, and then “diminish”, before they got around to the part where they “don’t fuck around with this sort of thing”
True enough, and it's to be expected. It doesn't surprise me at all, incentives motivating local bureaucrats and party hacks being what they are. What is pleasantly surprising is the speed and seriousness of the Wuhan response compared with the abysmal handing of the SARS virus a few years back. That is a story that should make your hair stand on end. Are you familiar with the details? Check out Philip Pan's 'Out of Mao's Shadow' if you think you have the stomach for it. Most of it is about the Cultural Revolution and the One Child policy, but the bits about SARS, near the end of the book should turn your hair gray. (No offence if you're already a baldy.)

Imagine the number of violent confrontations if state authorities were to attempt to take children from their parents because they were positive for KungFlu. Nope, hard core like China did will not happen in the US.
"I don’t think the Chinese approach would fly. "
It seems to have worked OK in Taiwan and South Korea. America would probably have fared better had the country be prepared for a pandemic and the virus been taken seriously from the get go.
I suspect you are right about America's rejection of China's heavy handed methods. Americans perform better when you offer incentives in the form of monthly bail-out payments.
LOL have you seen how easily Americans have rolled over so far? They would not only give in to it they would cheer it for "their protection."
Children are being separated at hospitals.
Your last sentence is wrong. International organizations are by design not able to do their job. Nobody wants them to, because that way none of the signatories will ever get offended.
The US government is far more responsible for this than its letting on.
Besides giving the leading Wuhan researcher millions in defence grants to develop COVID19 the US did nothing when it’s own inspection teams warned of a pandemic in 2018.
“US State Department Cables Warned Of Potential 'SARS-Like Pandemic' After visiting Wuhan Lab Experimenting With Bat Coronavirus“
http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/04/14/state-department-cables-warned-safety-issues-wuhan-lab-studying-bat-coronaviruses/
Your link is bullshit:
"The first cable, which I obtained, also warns that the lab’s work on bat coronaviruses and their potential human transmission represented a risk of a new SARS-like pandemic.
During interactions with scientists at the WIV laboratory, they noted the new lab has a serious shortage of appropriately trained technicians and investigators needed to safely operate this high-containment laboratory,” states the Jan. 19, 2018, cable, which was drafted by two officials from the embassy’s environment, science and health sections who met with the WIV scientists.”
Not a word of warning of any disease; it noted that the safety precautions were not up to (US) standards.
Here's a doozy for you:
https://twitter.com/WHO/status/1217043229427761152
Preliminary investigations conducted by the Chinese authorities have found no clear evidence of human-to-human transmission of the novel #coronavirus (2019-nCoV) identified in #Wuhan, #China

Try something other than twitter if you hope to be taken seriously.
He was just citing the WHO in a way which supports defunding them
Not sure I want the backing of someone quoting twitter...
The WHO posted that to Twitter, which is the point
"Preliminary investigations conducted by the Chinese authorities have found no clear evidence of human-to-human transmission of the novel #coronavirus (2019-nCoV) identified in #Wuhan, #China
Jan. 14, 2020"
That was posted by the WHO Twitter account
I'm sure that matters to someone; please make it into a logical case.
Until then, I don't care.
We really won't know what is a success or failure until this is over and looked at in retrospect. Same with Presidents, time tends to show us if their administrations and policies where effective or not. FDR might be a prime example, he seemed the savior at the time, but now his policies are seen to have extended the Great Depression.
Some dude lied to Zach Weissmueller, and because of that, I want Zach's pay cut by half and his kitchen privileges taken away immediately.
It's so patently dumb for our fake president to do what he did to WHO yesterday. I would imagine the truth behind this boneheaded decision is much weirder than any reasonable person would ever believe. First, I am willing to put five bucks on the table that the fake president doesn't like any authority anywhere in the world--just as he doesn't want anyone smarter than he is on his staff. That's why his administration is thinner than gulag soup in terms of knowledge and scope and range. Who with half a brain would want to work under that?
Then there's his implicit need to deflect blame onto someone. He's attacking WHO. He's attacking China. And Nancy Pelosi, Democrats, Liberals, socialists, and god knows who or what else.
Toxic moronavirus warning....
Yeah so?
LOL
This virus was discovered, not developed. Have you called Instacart yet to have them up the amount of tin foil you need for your hat?

ONE MORE ARTICLE LIKE THIS AND DALMIA WILL QUIT
Emily Ko had a great timeline above. But she and the author, Mr Weissmuller missed a very important item. First the US has already been reneging on payments to WHO. Second the US has not participated in WHO Executive Board meetings for over two years and in fact they have no named reps to the Executive Board (see the link. https://apps.who.int/gb/gov/en/composition-of-the-board_en.html
Trump walked away from the WHO quite a while ago. His current actions are to cover for his willful and now dangerous unilateralism. China stepped in to that vacuum (and others he has created) and this is exactly what anyone with sense could predict would happen.
Completely agree that China has been less than transparent with the extent of the disease and deaths. And its response was slow. But when it did respond it went all in. And in the beginning Trump was all for saying how well his conversations with the Xi Jinping went. So he was duped as well. The WHO has lost cred for sure but in the end they are dependent on their member nations to define, support and maintain the professional standards and mission of the organization. When USA walked away, they announced to the world what they thought of those standards and mission. Nothing.
"Emily Ko had a great timeline above."
No, she didn't. It's a smelly pile of innuendo, hints, un-attributed claims, assumptions and probably a healthy portion of outright lies.
It's a hack-job.

Maybe that's because when the WHO starting bending over for China, it's credibility went the same way the UN Human Rights Council did when it put China on the panel, or Rwanda, or Sudan, or Afghanistan, or... "The U.S. State Department said on March 5, 2007 that, for the second year in a row, the United States has decided not to seek a seat on the Human Rights Council, asserting the body had lost its credibility with repeated attacks on Israel and a failure to confront other rights abusers.[151] Spokesman Sean McCormack said the council has had a “singular focus” on Israel, while countries such as Cuba, Myanmar and North Korea have been spared scrutiny. "
Why waste time and money on political shams?
Trump ALSO praised China for their response.
As did quite a few people.
Seek help. Or don't; we can hope TDS is fatal in your case.
I feel bad how this virus has killed many in my country not because of the virus itself but because of lockdown and hunger associated with it.

What level of stupidity are we dealing with here? When did you, you pathetic piece of shit, stop beating your husband?
China’s 66-year-old President Xi Jinping lobbied hard for Tedros to get the WHO post July 1, 2017. China has spent billions in Ethiopia, Tedros’s home country, leaving Tedros the perfect WHO candidate since he was beholden to Beijing. Xi’s wife Peng Liyuan served as a WHO goodwill ambassador for many years before Tedros landed the job. Repaying Xi was never in questions for Tedros, who’s confidence kept the U.S. and other U.N. member-states from knowing the extent to the Wuhan epidemic. By the time the truth came out March 11, it was already too late with millions of infected Chinese tourists descending on Europe, United States and beyond.. It’s no accident that Europe and the United States have borne the brunt of the Covid-19 pandemic. With 1,997,620 total cases and 126,596 deaths worldwide, SARS CoV-2 is the worst global plague since the 1918 H1N1 Spanish Flu pandemic.
With 1,997,620 total cases and 126,596 deaths worldwide, SARS CoV-2 is the worst global plague since the 1918 H1N1 Spanish Flu pandemic. When you put it that way it just doesn't seem so bad. Why am I at home?
Funny how so many political commentators feel this need to always assure everybody that they don't like Trump. Even when it has nothing to do with the subject at hand. Its like the college freshman who keeps telling you hes an atheist.
We get it. You don't have to keep repeating yourself.
Seems agreement on the information is rare, hence data for consideration or analysis is uncommon. Timelines suggesting American knowledge of the potential health implications of the virus being first noted in December 2019 do exist. Certainly, the epidemiology research community had previously developed guidelines for how to address infections of this potential. Responses in the US were slower than ideal based on the established scientific literature, and some news outlets referred to the notions that such a crisis might develop as hoaxes, or weak alternatives to impeachment of the President. It seems one must choose which renditions they prefer, and then realize that “all roads lead to Rome”. We have substantial issues to resolve including the balance of economic and human capital, and the creation of both vaccines and treatments for a potentially lethal phenomenon no one clearly understood until responses were limited. In the meantime, the rate of infection or death has not been correlated with political affiliation.
Every country needs to follow in line and pull out of China and then see how powerful they are. Japan to pay firms to leave China, relocate production elsewhere as part of coronavirus stimulus.
"...it's important to remember that if the World Health Organization had done its job, the nightmare we're living through might not have happened at all. ..."
And this is where I disagree. The WHO was a useless CCP turd polisher during this pandemic, but I'm certain that, no matter what the WHO had said or done, the result in the US would've been the same. Our history shows that we just cannot internalize potential threats if we've never experienced them at least once before. That's probably true of other countries as well.
Health-wise, we actually got off easy, at least so far. Mostly due to the lockdown we'll end up experiencing far fewer deaths this year from flu+covid-19 than we normally experience from flu alone. The real harm is from shutting down the economy, and we won't need to do that next time.
Why the f*** would anyone believe anything out of China at face value? Ever? Trying to spin this as 'oh China didn't tell us everything' is beyond weak and sad.
The standard right-wing (and yes, "libertarians" in the American sense of the word are right-wing) narrative is (1) those horrible Chinse communists are behind this disease and must be punished and (2) it's not that bad a disease and only wimps are keeping us shut down because of it. Somehow I detect a tension between (1) and (2)...
As far as the US is concerned the WHO is a minor player. Does anyone seriously think that Trump listens to what it says or doesn't say? More importantly look at all the times Trump downplayed the epidemic in February and early March. Most famously, on Feb. 26 he stated we had 15 cases with a declining case load, maybe down to zero.
Completely left out of this article is the very, very significant fact that World Bank had sold pandemic bonds. When WHO declared a pandemic, the bond investors lost substantial amounts money. WHO had a lot of pressure from capitalists not to declare a pandemic.

Dipshits that say the virus was discovered not developed probably still believe in Santa Claus.
Since the early 2000’s the leading Chinese virologist t Doctor Shi Zhengli has been engineering Coronaviruses working in North Carolina with millions in US grants.
In 2014 the Obama administration initiated a temporary moratorium on “gain of function” engineering which enhances virus communicability and lethality.
Shi moves back to Wuhan China to continue the engineering with the US grants.
In 2015 their careless behaviour released a SARS variant killing several people.
In 2017 the Trump administration rescinded the moratorium, which enabled new grants for gain of function engineering.
In 2018 US embassy inspectors were allowed to review the work in China’s only p4 virus lab which was located in Wuhan. They reported back that it was not secure and a SARS like global pandemic was likely to originate there.
The US government funded the development of COVID19, sent it to China and ignored their own warnings.
Yes indeed. Reason's article on this shows the enormous divide between real think-for-yourself people and ideologues who see President Trump as wrong no matter what he does. Hence I'm no longer an enthusiastic Reason supporter, but VERY skeptical about much of their coverage!
Covid19 behaves like nothing we’ve seen before.
Apparently they were trying to make a Coronavirus infect people with an HIV vaccine.

The people that complain the most about Trump's lies also seem to lie the most themselves.
Don't bring rationality to the table, you'll erode Fox News' ad revenue.
