Reason-Rupe Poll Finds Millennial Support for Big Government Overblown by Media
HD Download"Millennials don't conform to traditional political stereotypes," says Reason-Rupe polling director Emily Ekins. "They're pro-business and they're pro-government. However, their support for government action has been overblown in the media."
Ekins sat down with Reason TV to discuss results from the Reason-Rupe Spring 2014 Millennial Survey.
While 65 percent of millennials favor a free market economy over a government-managed economy, many of them came of age before or during the Great Recession, which left many questioning whether or not the free market drives their personal income mobility.
Millennials' views on taxes also shift as they get older and take on more responsibilities. "When taxes are not mentioned, a majority of millennials favor a larger government providing more services," Ekin states. "However, when tax rates are explicit, support for large government flips and a majority of millennials say they favor a smaller government offering fewer services."
Watch the video above to hear Ekins delve deeper into these results.
