Really, I see only one explanation about this that makes sense. Trump was never trying to protect himself. So much has been released about Trump that was faked that there's no real chance there is anything real against him. Therefore, he was trying to stop some fallout that would come from this coming out. There are a few possibilities

1: Prior presidents. If Obama, Biden, or Clinton are confirmed to be there and he pushed the release, it would look like revenge.
2: Current Incumbents. How many congressmen or judges were involved? What chaos would that cause.
3: Foreign heads of state. We know Prince Andrew was involved. Who knows who else? How many of our allies will we alienate with this?
In any of these cases, now it's outside of Trump's hands and he's being forced. Therefore he's partially shielded from the blame.

Of course there is always one final option
4: Spy organization. If it is revealed that this was an organized operation to catch any of the above groups. Now we will be requiring a purge and arrest of a large number of our own DOJ.

You really need to get rid of Nick Gillespie. You complain about Trump being disparaging, but you have this buffoon on staff who is worse that Trump. At least with Trump it's a bit tongue in cheek versus the unbridled hatred.
