Leigh Stein and Julius Taranto: Did Wokeness and Trump Kill Literary Satire?
The novelists join the podcast for a sharp, satirical dive into fiction, free speech, and the absurdity of modern culture.
Satire is a powerful force for political and cultural change. But is it even possible in a world that outstrips our imagination on a daily—or even hourly—basis?
Today's guests are two young novelists who are redefining satire in the 21st century. Leigh Stein is the author of Self Care, which is set at a women's wellness startup where things go very wrong. Her next novel, If You're Seeing This, It's Meant for You, takes place at a social media hype house and comes out in August. Julius Taranto is the author of How I Won a Nobel Prize, which is set at a secretive university funded by a reclusive billionaire and staffed exclusively by faculty who have been canceled elsewhere. His reviews and essays have been published in The Washington Post, The New York Review of Books, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and elsewhere.
Reason's Nick Gillespie talks with them about the widely pronounced post-election vibe shift by which artists feel emboldened once again to slay sacred cows with impunity. And they explore whether contemporary markets for books, movies, plays, music, and other forms of creative expression are actually capable of supporting a new era of satire, parody, and self-examination.

How the fuck did Trump kill satire?
Go search YouTube for the "React" channel. Specifically, look for a recent-ish video where they react to "Roasts". Only 1 or 2 of the react-ers (whom the host refers to as "comedians" in the intro) actually have a sense of humor. Then, a few clips of the Trump roast show up, and suddenly they think it's all hilarious. Buncha humorless turds on the left.

If this is an honest podcast, the explanation will be that Trump's existence deranged the nominally left-leaning artist community so badly, it sucked the artistry out of their art. Seriously.

FYI, there is EXCELLENT satire everywhere, and during the 4 years of Biden saw some of the best political satire in recent memory.
Except the wokeness had already sucked the artistry out of their art, even without Trump. Their reaction to him may have been an increase in volume and hysterics but wasn't a change beyond that.

[Tilts hand] The Stewart-Colbert-SNL-Late Show comedy debt began accruing during the Bushitler Administration, Trump just bankrupted them.
There was a back handed poll that showed that more Daily Show viewers could name more ME leaders or people in the DOD's "Terrorist deck of cards" than Fox Viewers but Fox viewers knew more people in the Presidential Chain of Succession. Even if you're reaping a bumper crop this season, you've gotta recognize "My comedy is a hit with people who sympathize with fundamentalists and terrorists." is, metaphorically, depleting the soil.
I can't really listen to a podcast while at work, but I imagine it is something along the lines of "Trump is so crazy that satire can't keep up! Truth is stranger than fiction!"

Any chance they talk about The Babylon Bee and other center-right outlets and personalities who have been running very successful satire?
Commenters here and more broadly those outside of the woke left bubble have been discussing how woke-ism killed comedy and satire for over a decade. Comedians decided to play it safe and dish out woke approved lines for "clapter." Journalists might as well be considered satirists because what they write is only tangentially related to the actual truth. They ruined both comedy and news through their hyperbolic and dishonest coverage.
Oddly, Trump should make for easy satire. He says bold and reckless things. It doesn't take much to stretch that into comedy. The right has been doing that with him since his first term. On the same note, the right was active in lampooning former corpse (p)resident Biden. If anything, satire was ruined by the Biden administration being even dumber than satirists felt they could stretch things. Conspiracy theorists and satirists kept running into the same problem that the truth would inevitably either confirm or exceed what they wrote.

When Nick was first hired I little suspected he'd turn out to be one of the most effective and entertaining producers at Reason. First impressions can be almost as wrong as a locust swarm of smarmy and superstitious orangopox MAGAts. As the Lawerd created mosquitoes to make us think better of flies, so the looter Kleptocracy brought forth Trumpanzee-Party schlockpuppets to make us appreciate the way Nick Gillespie's maturation has added value where value is needed.
