02:11—Democrats losing the plot on messaging and policy
Oh the messaging trope again.
Yep. People love far left policies the democrats just couldn’t sell them!
The best part of it is the backhanded "We're just as fucking evil now as we were then and we'll continue to be just as fucking evil into the future, the only thing we've lost is the messaging."
I mean after, "You didn't build that.", "You have to pass the law to find out what's in the law.", "rape culture", and "The stupidity of the American voter is exceeded only by its slovenliness." I'd probably think the issue was that I'd lost the message too.
We need Rev. Arty to remind us of our betters [understand he got himself permanently banned on the Volkh side].
Still with the delusions about Polis.
Sigh. Let's ignore for a second that Polis looks like Ricky Ricardo's neighbor, Fred Murtz. (Not the new German chancellor.) Polis is "libertarian" in that he's not quite as much of an authoritarian communist as most of his fellow party hacks in Boulder. But he LOVES top-down regulation and illegal tax hikes, even though they are prohibited by our state constitution.
Based on the comment history of the democrats here, they are in hysterics and not coping well.
That appears to be the commentary everywhere from what I’ve seen. Quora is just full of unhinged, venomous ravings. But this is good. They will drive away all but the most shrill, insane idiots and lose the midterms horribly.
Shrill, insane idiots are a large enough bloc these days to put the Democrat coalition over the top.
The latest Gallup poll:
https://news.gallup.com/poll/656636/democrats-favor-party-moderation-past.aspx
found that 29% of Democrats want the party to be more liberal, while 22% like it the way it is. 45% desire that it be more moderate.
I'm hoping it fractures.
Note to foreign readers: 26% of democrats carry pictures of Chairman Mao, the "liberal" warmunist. 22% want a headless chicken tripping over pronouns & fleeing Sharknados. 45% NOW believe, like Alabama Democrat George Wallace, that there may be something to Christian National Socialism and the eugenic extermination of individualism by racial artificial selection. Observe that none=0 believe ANY laws should be repealed or taxes cut. Would JFK cry if he saw this?
Nick Gillespie, your comment attacking a child was completely uncalled for and is outright despicable. I understand that you hate Trump and by proxy that you hate everyone who supports Trump, but attacking a child is unforgivable.
I’m not listening to upwards of an hour of their drivel. But I am curious about what you’re saying. Who did he attack?
He referred to Musk's son from the oval office interview as an "organ grinder baby monkey boy", which is pretty racist to an African-American.
Gillespie is a fucking freak. Drug addicted, cop hating, urbanite, Boomer trash who still thinks he's hip. He is at the core of why this party has become irrelevant.
"organ grinder baby monkey boy"
DID HE REALLY!?
What a freak.
The libertarian moment arrived but because it was brought by a bunch of ex-Democrat apostates and orangemanbad, they're going to oppose it, hate on their children and wax rhapsodic on the Blob.
Messaging; do they even have something to message?
Same as the past several decades: Everything wrong is the fault of racists, sexists, capitalists, and kulaks. They know better than everyone else and therefore deserve ownership and command. Actual liberty is a threat to their vision and needs to be "limited".
Everything wrong is the fault of racists, sexists, capitalists, and kulaks. They know better than everyone else and therefore deserve ownership and command. Actual liberty is a threat to their vision and needs to be "limited".
Gee that sounds like Team Red, just replace "racists, sexists, capitalists, and kulaks" with "illegals, Chinamen, and Democrats".
Yeah. Because 'democratic' [Na]tional So[zi]al[ism] is also 'illegal' in the USA.
Your entire list (i.e. "illegals, Chinamen, and Democrats") can just be summed up as blaming 'ILLEGAL' acts for problems. As-if criminal mentality wasn't suppose to be the blame for problems. /s
I surprised you leftards can walk upright with the amount of conflicting thought patterns you carry around to support your 'Gun' theft gang-building mentalities.
"and Democrats"
No. Your demonic child-eating party is in no way like the kulaks. Maybe the Aztecs.
Hey, the Aztecs made the sedan chairs run on time.
The DNC meeting on 2/1 supports your conclusion; Harris lost due to racism and misogyny and David Hogg was elected vice chair [after they made certain their choices included enough of the "correct" sorts of people and identifications to comply with DEI standards].
Choor: Ban energy or else Climate Sharknado Warmunism will git ya.
depends what the definition of actually is
'Are Democrats Actually in Disarray?'
Nope. Still dedicated to driving the bus off the cliff. And blaming Racists! for the lack of pavement under their tires. Think Wile E. Coyote, but dumber and more evil.
The reality is that the USA should not be involved in promoting, funding and fighting any war or conflict anywhere in the world without a formal declaration of war.
If Europe wants to play war, then they should fund it considering that it is in their neighborhood.
Regarding who started the war, it's debatable unlike some of you supposed anti-war warmongers who when push comes to shove cow-tow to the war-machine's propaganda. Our country is not innocent and has indeed provoked responses. I will not go so far to say that Putin and Russia was justified, but they are not the buggyman that the corporate media and apparently Reason believes.
Nick need to get a grip with his asinine stupidity and his lack of an ability to taking any politician literally let alone Trump. It is absolutely crazy how worked up Nick gets in a one-sided biased way. Why don't you just admit that you are not a libertarian, but rather a leftist mole.
What Nick does not seem to comprehend is that Trump isn't the root of all evil. Personally, Trump is not my choice and I've never voted for him, but good grief, what you are claiming is totally insane and deranged.
The reality is that Donald Trump is not a far-right politician. In many ways he is left of center, but it's a mixed bag and he does into fit into the Stereotypes that Nick, the democrats, and corporate media demands. Left to the plans of Nick, the democrats and corporate media, we would have exactly the same spiraling out of control government spending into oblivion.
And the whining, and whining, and whining is amazing. We need some challenges to the status quo. It might be messy and make Nick uncomfortable, but Nick needs to get his undies in a bunch and learn to grow up.
Europe is paying for some of Ukraine, but we’re doing the heavy lifting.

Please note that I found this information through a basic Lougle search, and am not familiar with the entity that published this information. But it looks legit.
Hot tub time machine? Man, digging deep for that reference.
Kudos.
Still cannot account for $100 billion of the aid the US provided to Ukraine. Pockets have been substantially lined, similar to the 13.5 billion that was raised for Haiti, of which may 2% made it to the supposed recipients [much went to expensive NGO operations located in and around NYC and DC; the rest was siphoned off by corrupt politicians].
Why do you think so much upset has been generated by DOGE [aside from the useful idiots that always show up to weep, wail, and gnash their teeth]?
I would like for Democrats to watch the video of the BLM protest confrontation that led to the Rittenhouse shooting. The one where the armed crew with Rosenbaum, and a slew of very clearly hired agitator crew captains (ACTBLUE? USAID?), are hyping themselves up to "fight fascism." I assume Huber and Grosskreutz are in the mix there somewhere.
From what I can see on Social Media and various online forums, Democrats are hyping themselves up again. Disarray? Maybe for the moment...
Are the Ds in disarray? Maybe, probably, but we will know for sure when the budget bill comes up for a vote. If the Ds stand strong and don't help it pass, they are not in disarray. If they cave then they are. Withholding their votes unless they get concessions is the only thing Ds can do.
Sure they are, they will reflexively vote against anything that begins to telegraph fiscal responsibility or takes a penny away for. Their sacred cows. That doesn’t prove that they’re actually organized.
The Republican budget has bigger tax cuts than cost reductions. It has nothing to do with fiscal responsibility. Lets also point out that the last time we had a balanced federal budget, it was under a Democrat president. And a Republican President destroyed it.
They are tax cuts extensions dumdum.
Cancelling tax cut extensions are the same as tax cuts in my book. Congress is passing a law to make taxes lower than they would have been absent any law.
No tax cuts until we have a balanced budget and repaid a good chunk of the US debt.
"Cancelling tax cut extensions are the same as tax cuts in my book"
That's because you're a fucking slimy pile of ignorant lefty shit.
Fuck off and die, asshole.
1. Fuck you, it’s not your goddamn money I worked my ass off for last year. Or the year before that. Or the year before that. Etc. etc.
2. Tax cuts aren’t fucking spending.
3. For nearly 8 years you democrats have been bitching that the tax cuts for middle class and lower class people were the majority of those that would expire. And yet you did nothing to stop that while you had power and NOW you want to stop it from happening. You motherfuckers are pure evil.
We need to get rid of people like TonyGodiva.
The federal government is spending more than it takes in and taking about loans for the rest. Why is it fair to our future generations for them to pay for government services that we are using now?
Fuck you, cut spending.
Cut spending first, then after we have no deficit can we talk tax cuts.
But you’re a total idiot. So your idiotic perceptions are irrelevant.
The little douche bag showed up a couple of weeks ago; I muted it's bullshit a while back because it contributes nothing and I suspect has an abuse fetish and comes here [so to speak] for gratification.
There is no possibility that the budget will be cut enough to begin reducing the debt. We are heading for a cliff and it's too late to hit the breaks. Total collapse is coming. Either prepare now to survive in a Mad Max world or have a plan to end your life when the food riots start.
Oh, I HOPE they vote against and the government shuts down.
Keep it shut down for the next two years.
That would crash the world economy.
No it wouldn’t you ignorant shitweasel. A government shutdown only interrupts about 18% of government activity. Things like the Capitol Mall gift shop.
If Congress fails to pass a budget, the government can not spend any money. That means no government employee gets paid, no SS, no Medicare, no Medicaid, no government contracts or grants, you can't get a passport, air traffic control will go down, all the civilians that back up the military will go away. Everything goes away. It would absolutely trash the economy.
Nope. You are woefully ignorant. Quit listening to democrats. They’re lying to you.
Ignorant, or just lying? That depth of ignorance is hard to believe.
Were you born yesterday? We have multiple examples in the last decade of what actually happens. Even if you don't know what the procedures are supposed to be, you could simply look at recent history to see how it has been done (and this includes the unnecessary front facing propaganda things Obama did)
You left out dogs and cats living together.
It is legitimately cute that you believe this, MollyTony.
The democrats are a mess because they're a bunch of rich, elitist snobs who have a false sense of entitlement.
Their defense of Biden and Harris these past four years make them look like they're defending incompetence, corruption and outright stupidity...which they are.
The sad part is the democrats have no clue just how far out of touch with reality and the American people they really are.
So long as the Gov - 'Gun' armed-THEFT of all those 'icky' productive American people keep filling the tit in the sky..... That's really all they truly care about. The rest is just a means to that end.
a bunch of rich, elitist snobs
In coalition with government-dependent losers. Together, they're a formidable plurality.
Suderman is so desperate to believe left wingers will adopt libertarianism in housing and other areas, and then Ward sprinkles one grain of realism and completely crushes his fantasy. If trump accomplishes nothing else it will still be the most libertarian presidency since the WWII government buildup and supposed libertarians are desperate to prefer the far left anyway.
It's also interesting he is highlighting as his savior Matt Yglesias who refers to libertarianism as a ridiculous philosophy. In reality Yglesias' philosophy is devolving exactly as libertarians told him it would and our philosophy is the only workable alternative. But yeah, Yglesias is the guy who knows what's going on.
Unmitigated, doctrinaire libertarianism IS a ridiculous philosophy.
All philosophies are ridiculous if pursued to the extreme. But that says nothing about the relative favorability of the directions they point.
NICK: Elon Must is wandering through the halls of government doing insane things.
ME: Didn't Reason advocate closing some 2 dozen agencies? Does anyone here believe what they write?
ME: Didn't Reason advocate closing some 2 dozen agencies? Does anyone here believe what they write?
I've been thinking about this one lately, and the best explanation I can come up with is this:
Beltway libertarians believe(d) that this would be achieved when the country, as a whole suddenly woke up and realized that CATO-style libertarianism was the Best Way Forward and... a large group of toga-wearing tech luminaries would guide us through a willing and thoughtful coalition of center-left idealistic Ramones-listening policy shifts that would calmly and peacefully dismantle the regulatory deep state through enlightened hand-holding, champaign glass-clinking ribbon cuttings and warm handshakes... ushering in a brave new era of business-friendly free marketeering with just enough regulatory oomph to let us know what was in our over-the-counter heroin.
Jared Polis would be President, David Simon Vice President, and overdose deaths drop to zero because all chemistry is 100% legal and properly labeled.
No one in these agencies would lose a job, but somehow we would still experience the savings to bring our deficit and debt down?
My sense is that they are culturally leftist having lived in large cities their entire lives and bonded as part of the young crew of enthusiastic journalists. Suderman at one point lived with Yglesias and maybe Klein along with some other left wing journalists. Ultimately they're knowledgeable or insightful enough about economics to reject the left's economic program but they consider that an intellectual disagreement, not personal. But they accept the rest of the left's worldview and therefore they hate the right as racist/sexist/homophobic. So their instinct is to find ways to agree with the people they like.
Noticed the same; it's as though they want a civil and congenial reduction of government, whereas the only way to deal with something horrid out of a Little Abner cartoon is to kill it.
You want useless and overreaching agencies shut down? This is how you shut them down.
Suderman tries the same attack again;
SUDERMAN: Bidenomics was a disaster. Don't you think Dems should not waste a trillion dollars with nothing to show for it and run the next election touting what a success it was? Won't they have to embrace libertarian economics?
WARD: It's true that sucks, but Dem history shows us they will react by wasting 2 trillion dollars next time.
Just a reminder of the hierarchy:
Trump: Literally worse than Hitler
Ron DeSantis: Literally worse than Trump
Josh Hawley: Literally worse than Ron DeSantis
Elon Musk: Literally worse than Josh Hawley
George W. Bush: Swell guy.
Biden: Just an old, forgetful shit who cannot be held legally accountable for his crimes.
Note to foreign readers: the above uses the 1920 NSDAP platform as the standard of value. To Christian National Socialists, Hitler and Trump are Jesus and God. To Fabian International Socialists, Hitler and Trump are Satan and Beelzebub. Neither flavor of socialism attributes any worth or value to reason, freedom or individual rights.
Nick made another interesting comment in the context of criticizing Milei's support for some crypto currency: Milei should be a path for Dems and the world. It's odd to leave out Reps since he visited and Trump tasking Musk can be seen as an attempt to emulate his actions in Argentina. This reminds me of Randy Barnett's comment that too many commentary class libertarians seem to accept anything from Dems and nothing from Reps.
We're getting the most traction we've ever had and Nick is holding out for people whose ideas are the complete antithesis of libertarian as if it's plausible they will completely reverse their entire economic program. On certain issues he has insight but there's something about his worldview that prevents reasonable conclusions. Suderman seems to be following in his footsteps with his belief economic failure will make the Dems turn libertarian.
“This reminds me of Randy Barnett's comment that too many commentary class libertarians seem to accept anything from Dems and nothing from Reps.”
See most of our erstwhile “libertarian” posters (obviously not Molly, Tony or shrike).
This reminds me of Randy Barnett's comment that too many commentary class libertarians seem to accept anything from Dems and nothing from Reps.
Yes, it's what I call agree-to-disagree libertarianism.
National Socialists goood; International Socialists baaad!
Suderman seems to be following in his footsteps with his belief economic failure will make the Dems turn libertarian.
Shyeah... economic collapse will turn them into Stalin-- and that's if we're lucky. If we're not, it'll be Mao. And given the city I live in, things are looking way more Mao than Stalin.
Translation: National Socialism + International Socialism = all of reality.
Reason should get rid of The Jacket and bring back Kurt Loder, he’s cooler.
Reason should move the office back to Santa Barbara and fire anyone who does not take a job there.
At one point. Reason was a voice for libertarianism, not a virulent defender of swamp critters.
Welsh? Fuck off and die and take most all of the current staff with you. There is no possible return to libertarian values with the TDS-addled lefty shits currently producing content here. And I'm well aware that you are a TDS-addled slimy pile of lefty swamp-critter shit.
They should move to somewhere that isn’t full of democrats.
Republicans don’t throw cocktail parties though.
In fact, they’d probably get invited to a barbecue with *gasp* domestic beer.

Yes, the Democrats are in full disarray, and the sole blame is on the trans community. But rest easy. The Republicans will give the Democrats a clear path to claw themselves back to full cultural control.
Republicans of a generation ago most certainly would [and did]; today the Republican Party bears little resemblance and seems more like it morphed into a third party. Guess I remain hopeful at this point, but of course there is a minefield of economic downturns and corrections and any number of possible missteps and scandals that would be capitalized on to bring it down.
Meanwhile Carville is back with the Democratic program and predicting that the Trump administration will "collapse" within 30 days. apparently because of their focus and opposition to trans males participating in women's sports and DOGE will cause more people to join them. Interesting 180 from his very recent rants about how far off the Democrats are.
Makes sense. Voters seem to like taking a break from bullying girls and enslaving women to death in back alleys while looting countries and creating market crashes. Fining people for not addressing bearded wymn reading dark Bible to kids in government restrooms as "Your Ladyship"--while banning electricity and take-home pay--are the ONLY welcome change from Comstock prohibitionism available. Indeed, why NOT forever alternate between these two clearly distinguishable yet all-encompassing alternatives?
I can't wait to hear whether the Dims have learnt anything. Since Kennedy was shot from two different angles in a level plane, the Dems have only scored wins after Republican prohibitionist looting rampages wrecked the economy. Remember Tricky's Psychotropicalia decree? Operation intercept, then Jerry baffled by stagflation? Remember Ronnie 'n Bush invading Latin America? Whutabout asset forfeiture topping burglary in Waffen's 2007? Once upon a time dims learnt fr'm th' Liberal Party 'n illicted FDR.
I was impressed by the excellent quality of this podcast. There is no describing how it contrasts with the dumpster fire train wreck the Orangopox Jesus Caucus has made of the rest of the libertarian movement.
All you hotshot Reason writers need a Logic class.
Liberals/Democrats in general are more and more (violently) supporting the same things FOR OPPOSED REASONS
Didn't you see that fight at a parade, feminists attacking homosexuals who had a sex change ?
My favorite quote for many of the posts on here , is T S Eliot's
“The last act is the greatest treason. To do the right deed for the wrong reason.”
― T.S. Eliot
How many liberals were anti-Trumpers and so went for Kamala , one of the stupidest and worst-spoken jerks in American poliltical history. The question YOU should ask yourself is " Have my hates become stronger than my loves?" -- because more and more Reason is just killing the enemies but standing for nothing.
When a great boxer KO's the other guy, nobody analyzes as you are doing now. They say the reason that Great Guy won is because ...NOT: little guy could have won if these 5 things had happened.
Roberts smells more like rotting fish with every hour. Now that we know Judge Boasberg tossed everything for his Immigrant-helping daughter...not to mention Presidential Immunity , where Roberts had that same stupid smile....
As for Congress, I think midterms will send Democrats into the history cemetery.
That leaves us with a GREAT VP and a titanic Cabinet but you acting as if it is all TRUMP.
You remind me of Bernie Sanders all the time ???? Yes, Biden was the acting --- and I mean 'acting' -- President but Trump has dispersed pqwer and has a functioning human being as VIce President.
You really should drop the "Trump is the only one" tactic. He was a magnet and there are a gillion filings now
